Emotional, sweet, and deep, this little Christmas story soared onto my favorites list. It was a beautiful love story while not getting cheesy or messy in sappy ways that drive me bonkers 98% of the time. A single bad word hampered this one from being a full five stars. However, this charmer's a keeper for me.

A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE is Ms. Goyer’s first Christmas novella. I think this is an absolutely stellar start to the Christmas season. Rose should’ve known the truth of her birth since her subconscious reminded her in dreams, but the memory got repressed enough that when she learned the truth as an adult it shattered her.
Jonathon, her fiancé, was a wonderful man. He enlisted in the Army when he felt badly about other men’s sons being killed—and he’d serve WWII sitting in jail or forced labor if he didn’t enlist. As a medic, his job was to save lives, not kill. But that didn’t keep him from being rejected, both by the Amish and by Rose.
I cared for these characters and wanted them both to find peace. The truth of Rose’s family came as a surprise for me. I’d expected a different family to be her true one. But it was perfect. Discussion questions are included. $15.99. 192 pages.

Wow! This book so good! Honestly, it has to be one of my favorite Amish reads ever!
The characters were real, and the plot engaging. The ending took me by surprise!
The faith content was extraordinary! It was naturally woven into the book which made it powerful!
If you love Amish Fiction, I recommend picking up this book during the Christmas season. You won't be disappointed!
And after reading the Author's note, she actually wrote the book off of a true story which made the whole story even more meaningful!
This book might have to become a traditional Christmas read every year!

A Christmas Gift for Rose is a sweet novella that can be read in one evening. Set at the end of World War II, it tells the story of two people trying to find their way: Rose, an Amish woman who learns she was born Englisch, and Jonathan, the man Rose loves ... a man who broke Amish tradition by becoming a medic during the war. Rose struggles greatly with the newfound knowledge of her past; if she wasn't born Amish, can she really be Amish?
While Rose's anguish over her past and how that would inform her future got to me at times (and if she were a real friend of mine, we would have had a few heart-to-hearts about what makes a family), I thought her struggle seemed realistic. I can't imagine the tailspin you'd be thrown into if you learned as an adult that you had been adopted.
Jonathan is a man of great character—someone who listened to God at the risk of offending man and who was willing to sacrifice his happiness in order to help Rose find out who she was. His pursuit of Rose's heart is quite moving.
A beautiful hardback book, A Christmas Gift for Rose would be a great stocking stuffer for the fiction lover in your life. I also hope that someday it will be made into a film—wouldn't it fit perfectly into Hallmark's Christmas lineup?

I really enjoyed "A Christmas Gift for Rose" and was surprised how much character development Tricia was able to do in a novella! The reader was able to have a very in depth look into Rose’s and Jonathon’s heart where where there was anguish, doubt, hope, love, and surrender to God’s will as well as the meaning of family. With this Tricia really wrote the story in a fast paced way, but it wasn’t rush! I actually really liked in that format because it kept the story flowing with again great character development.
Overall, I loved the basis of the story concerning Rose’s life (don’t want to say what exactly because I don’t want to spoil it) as well as Jonathon’s choices that he made concerning WWII! It was very interesting and a unique story about the Amish with a fresh perspective on the community! I also thought it was interesting how the author had written about how Rose compared her life to the story of Heidi while reading it to the school children! It gave me a new outlook on Heidi’s story as well as sympathy to Rose!
If you’re like me and not a huge Amish fan, but do love the occasionally Amish story then this a perfect Christmas novella to read this upcoming season! It’s short and sweet while having a beautiful message!

I really liked this unique story and it's even more special when you know it's inspired by a true story. I can't imagine how hard it must have been to find out you weren't really who you thought you were, especially that you come from the English, outsiders to your Amish community. I liked that she had to reexamine her life, her faith, and her attitudes not only because of this, but because of her fiance going to help in the war. I was pretty frustrated with her attitude at first, because it was all about her, how she felt, how people viewed her, and she seemed pretty selfish. At the same time I could understand, too, because we can all be like that. When she finally started listening to the wisdom of her family and fiance, she was able to regain perspective. It was interesting to see the effects the war had on her fiance and other men who had gone through it, both mentally and physically. It reminds me how thankful we should be that these men went and fought for freedom, giving their lives in one way or another. It was also eye-opening to see how the Amish viewed their own who went. I loved the focus on adoption and that adoptees are chosen, just like God chooses to adopt us as his children. Check it out, especially if you like Amish fiction!

Tricia has once agan crafted a sweet romantic story, this time by blending two favorite worlds… historical fiction and amish fiction. At heart, it’s a classic love story.
Rose is a woman dwelling on the pain and rejection of having the man she loves leave their way of life behind to enlist. With the war over, Jonathan has returned and now she must confront her feelings. Does he have a place in her life if their community won’t accept him? But before Rose can listen to her own heart her life is turned upside down when a family secret is revealed.
I loved this quick read. When life is so crazy, it’s often hard to find time to dive into a great story. But, Tricia’s words drew me in from page one and her characters were quickly drawn to my heart. This Christmas novella is the perfect mental retreat for the soul!

Such a great story and a lesson to learn all wrapped up in a Christmas romance story. I enjoyed reading this one night before Christmas. This book kept me flipping pages till the end.

A very sweet story. I felt like these were characters I could root for, even though they didn't always make the right choices. I especially liked Rose's journey of feeling like she didn't belong anywhere, to understanding her place in God's plan.

I’m so excited that there are already Christmas fiction books available and this one caught my interest right away! Rose is a seemingly typical Amish girl who has been raised with a loving family and has fallen in love with an Amish boy. Then one day this boy makes a crucial decision to enlist into the army as a medic leaving Rose and most of their small community in stunned humiliation. Rose decides to end their relationship while he is away and the Bishop approves of her decision. The Amish are known for being pacifists and participating in this war is something they don’t do. She is angry, hurt, and feels like she doesn’t know Jonathan anymore, that he is no longer trustworthy after making such a bold move.
I thought the overall opinion of the community was harsh for Jonathan and the way the women glare at Rose throughout the book was uncalled for. Then again, I know nothing of their culture and their ways……this treatment both Rose and Jonathan experience is brutal yet realistic.
Then Rose learns that her Amish family isn’t her biological one and she spends the rest of the book looking for answers from her past and trying to figure out how to go forward with this new knowledge. There’s one scene where she gets a new revelation of her Englisch family and her mouth makes an O, one second later after I’d read the same revelation my mouth made the same shape in total surprise!
There is a reference to the book Heidi by Johanna Spyri. Rose compares this story to her own for much of the book and it brought sweetness to the plot.
For some reason I kept picturing the actor Lucas Till as Jonathan, an Amish man turned Army medic and comes back the same yet not the same. Much of the book mentions other characters that fought in the war and even though they come back alive they suffered terribly at what they experienced while away from home. One neighbor suffers from PTSD and it was precious how Jonathan and others visit him and help him get his mind back.
It turns out that Rose is one of 8 children in her Amish family and even though her background is unique she is pure Amish in her thinking, her faith, her community, and especially with her family. She is given the ultimate Christmas gift from Jonathan that symbolizes the kind of love and future they will enjoy together. I was delighted in the answers she finds, but even more so in the way her family and God loves her. This book is sure to enhance the Christmas season for new and seasoned Tricia Goyer readers alike.

I have been so very blessed recently with being on the launch team for Tricia Goyer’s fiction releases for the year. The newest offering that I got to read and review right now is A Christmas Gift for Rose. This is a book that I needed to read at this stage in my life.
Rose Yoder was a good Amish woman. One who knew her place in her society, what she wanted to do with her life and how it was going to happen. However, that all changed when Jonathon, her beau decided to enlist in the armed forces during WWII. A thing a good Amish man would never consider doing at all because they believe in total pacifism. This shattered Rose’s dreams and hope for the future. A good Amish girl could never marry such rebel.
Until she discovers a secret from her past that turns her world more on end than the decision of her beloved did by joining up to be a medic. A secret that she fears could cause her to be cast out of the only I community she knows and lost the people dearest to her.
Can Rose reconcile her past? Can she move on and forgive Jonathon? Can she forgive the people in her past for what happened to her and move on into the future knowing she was loved and accepted?
This book came at quite a time in my life. I’ve always struggled to fit in wherever I have been for the most part. I too carry secrets from my past that I am terrified would cause people to flee if they only knew. It is hard a lot of times for me to accept the friendship of my friends, the love of my husband and even the love of God at times, in ways similar to Rose. This book’s theme of love, acceptance, miracles, faith and overcoming one’s problems are masterfully woven throughout the story of Rose and Jonathon. It has helped me to accept the fact that my husband loves me for who I am, not because of my past, not because of who I may be in the future, but because I am me.
I am so grateful to have gotten to read this book and to be able to share it with you. This is a book you don’t want to miss if you love stories of faith, family and the Christmas season. If you find yourself caught up in the business of the holidays that are quickly approaching, grab this book and read it to remind yourself what really matters and let yourself relax.

Inspired by a true story, A Christmas Gift for Rose is a heartwarming tale of sacrifice, deep love, and discovering one's true identity.
Tricia Goyer's first Christmas novella, A Christmas Gift for Rose, is a stand-alone story to read anytime of the year. I liked looking into this family and experiencing their love and devotion. Stretching toward each other, hearing with listening ears and eyes to see unspoken need, they gave and cared beyond themselves. I especially liked how Rose's Mem cherished her and gave her room to grow. Unselfishly, they reached out to each other with affirmation. Love, that gave freedom, filled this novella.

November, 1945
Rose Yoder's intended has come home from the Second World War. Jonathan Fisher served as a medic, caring for injured soldiers in field hospitals. As he considered the Good Samaritan in the Bible, he couldn't stand by while others were in need of what he could give. There are those in his Amish community who do not agree with his choice and aren't certain he will remain as a Plain person. Rose, looking through the eyes of others, has broken her relationship with him.
Harold Ault, a neighbor, is back home and has flashbacks of what he experienced during the war, causing him to vacillate between then and now. Jonathan and Rose individually show him compassion and talk to him as they would have during earlier days of being friends together.
God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.
--Psalm 68:6
Rose is nearing eighteen as her parentage is revealed, differing from what she has known. She was birthed to an Englisch family. With uncertainty of what lies ahead, Rose questions who she is and where she fits in.
I really liked this story, especially the ending brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat for her. A story to be shared by all ages, I would like to read a continuance of Rose's family in further stories!

What I loved best: This story celebrates the many ways we can gift the people around us. The book is filled with characters who learn to listen without judgment, exercise kindness and mercy, take personal risks for their fellow men, and treat strangers like family.
I especially loved the two sets of parents who know a love so big, they sacrifice their own happiness or comfort to gift a child with life.

My favorite quote: "'Trust Me.' The words came as a gentle whisper to her soul."
The main character, Rose, has a sweet relationship with her Heavenly Father. I loved how God’s sweet whisper in her heart encouraged her to trust Him even when she didn’t understand what He was doing. Just knowing He saw her and heard her cries, gave Rose courage and hope.

A Christmas Gift for Rose officially kicks off this years Christmas reads for me! And what a great novella to do so. I'm beginning to think that Christmas Novellas are my favorite things to read! Top 5 at least! :) This one starts out around, and in, Thanksgiving and ends on Christmas day with a beautiful gift. Hence the title. Tricia's way of writing is wonderful. Her characters are lovable, at times frustrating, and beautiful all wrapped into one. There are certain tid-bits that Tricia adds that made be laugh and some that nearly brought tears and it's these things that make me love her writing the most. This book is filled with the message of Hope and God's plans. Some of the feelings were frustrating but realistically so. LOL! And the turmoils that continued to affect our veterans after the war are expressed realistically as well. I loved learning how the Amish responded to World War II, and the historical origins of this story. Based on a true story, A Christmas Gift for Rose was all the more touching. A secret, hope, family, finding where one belongs, love, God's provisions, and sacrifice are just the beginning. This is an excellent way to kick off the season and will make a wonderful Thanksgiving/Christmas read! I highly recommend it.

The story actually begins during the Great Depression of 1929 and entails the hardships on families. Some didn't have enough to eat. Some did. There was illness exacerbated by lack of proper nutrition. There was death and fear of death. This was the childhood of Rose and the beginning of her story.
The book opens when Rose is around 20 and is happily living in an Amish household as a devoted Amish Community member. She loves a young Amish young man, Jonathan, who veered away from the normal Amish non-violent, peaceful approach to war by enlisting in the military as a medic during WWII. The war is over and he is back in the Amish Community trying to again be a respected member. Rose and Jonathan love each other but must overcome questions and doubts.
This charming novella explores the hearts of those who adopt and who are adopted. It explores the wonderful value on many levels that adoption provides. But mostly, this little book leaves the reader with the feeling of joy and fulfillment. It is a story of hearts-ease.

When her fiancé, Jonathan Fisher leaves Rose Yoder and their Amish community to become a medic working in field hospitals during the war, she turns her back on him. Though still in love with Jonathan, Rose feels he has betrayed his faith by joining the war, and feels he is more Englisch than Amish. However, she has many lessons to learn about judging others when her world is shattered by the news that she was adopted and that her birth parents were not of the Amish faith. Rose searches for answers, and in doing so she finds out the meaning of true love, self-sacrifice, and God's plans for her life.
This is a wonderful read for any time of the year...truly thought provoking and enriching! Tricia Goyer touches on some deep issues that will leave the reader reaching for the tissues---adoption, shell shock and PTSD, and feelings of rejection. But she does so with finesse, compassion, and dignity to the sufferers...leaving no doubt that trusting in God is the answer to life's deepest problems. I love things that start getting me in the Christmas Spirt so what better way to start than with Tricia Goyer’s latest A Christmas Gift for Rose? Just the cover alone got me in the spirit and the book itself did not disappoint!
I have long been a fan of the Amish and Christmas among the plain was an interesting idea to me. I wasn’t sure how people who promote the simple and plain way of life would celebrate Christmas. Unlike most, their focus is not about the tree or decorations or Christmas shopping. They are more focused on the heart behind Christmas.
Rose is a sweet young Amish girl with a fiancé who has started some trouble with his serving in a war the Amish do not believe in. When her already troubled heart gets a shock about her past and upbringing, it’s almost more than she can bear. Will she be able to get over her past to look ahead to the future?
All of us have things in our past we’d rather others didn’t know but shame and running do not eliminate the past. It’s something that has to be accepted and embraced and Rose has a hard time adjusting to hers.

I liked how there were a couple surprises in the book and how my guess about something turned out to be correct. Tricia Goyer has written the sweetest Christmas story I have had the pleasure to read! I love the parallels she draws to Heidi, as Rose volunteers at the local Amish school once a week and reads a chapter to the class. I won't spoil it though and tell you how it relates to Rose's special story. I have always thought of adoption as the most precious way to tell I child: "We CHOSE you for our family!" Rose is having a hard time understanding how her Englisch family could have abandoned her to her Amish family when she was very small. She is filled with doubts about her own identity.
Added to this, the love of her life, Johnathon has returned from working as a medic in WWII, and she feels that he has abandoned her and their Amish faith too. Her Englisch neighbor, Harold, fought in the war and has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder which was referred to as "shell shock" at that time. Can Rose, Johnathon, Harold, and Rose's family help each other discover again the true meaning of family and Christmas? This is certainly a five-star book.

I would classify "A Christmas Gift for Rose" as an Amish historical fiction romance with an emphasis on the historical romance. Set near the end of World War II, this story opens with the main character, Rose, feeling both heart-broken and perplexed. Her ex-fiancé has just returned from an overseas tour of duty as a medic. His choice was controversial and suspect because the Amish are pacifists. His people expected this man to go to jail for refusing to serve rather than volunteer before even being drafted. Rose has heard all of their worries, complaints, and judgments and feels she must stand firm in her decision not to marry after all. She hasn’t heard his side of the story, though.
And Rose’s life is about to change with unexpected news about her own, shaky standing among her people. Rose will have to come to terms with who she is and to whom she belongs as everything she believes is hers will seem to be taken away.
I enjoyed reading this story and appreciated how author Tricia Goyer handled such subjects as military service, post-traumatic stress, poverty, and adoption. Readers who favor historical fiction with an enduring message will want to read this book.

I really like Tricia Goyer and I love a good Christmas novella however even though I usually like anything to do with WWII I did not just fall head over heels in love with A Christmas Gift for Rose.

I really enjoyed this sweet and quick read. This story is about the love of our fellow human beings and following God's Will. The true heart of this family is shown time and again.
Rose Yoder is a lovely young Amish woman, who was engaged to a young man who enlisted in WWII. The Bishop and the Community repeatedly told Rose to forget him.
There are many secrets here, hidden memories, and so much love. When Johnathan comes home, Rose is so torn. Then her own life is shattered, or so she thinks. We travel with this family who have truly given their lives to Christ, and done what he asks.
I wanted more, but the story itself is so good. Be ready for so many surprises. Every time they turned around something new was happening. Don't miss this terrific book by Tricia Goyer, you sure won't be disappointed, I wasn't!

I needed tissues for the message was so POWERFUL!!
I loved this book, but then I have loved reading all of Tricia Goyer's Amish books.
The way that God moves through Tricia Goyer's writing to send/give us, readers, His message . . . is His miracle. Do you feel your soul, maybe your heart, and or maybe your faith is being questioned? Then I highly recommend this book and no it does not have to be Christmas to read it. I can tell you this, the message was one that I needed to read by the end of the book.
"'Thank you for reminding me that the future is in God's hands.'" "'You're welcome. And remember, wherever you go, in body and mind, you simply need to call out to God and He is there.'"--quote from the book.

Sometimes a book makes you sit down & really think, & that is exactly what happened while I was reading this book by Tricia Goyer!
Tricia interweaves being adopted into God's family so beautifully & the love a Mother has for her children: biological/adopted.
One of my favorite quotes from A Christmas Gift for Rose is "Maybe He wanted you to be a part of two families hearts".
Without giving away too much of the story I believe anyone that has been adopted or has adopted children will love reading this book!

I usually stay away from the saturated Amish genre but I am glad I read this novella. It is a great story for the Christmas season. Besides the usually Amish story line, the setting of post World War II gives us additional information about the Amish view towards war and how the non-Amish felt about pacifism. We also learn the importance of being born Amish and the near impossibility of "becoming" Amish when not born so. Based on a true story, this is a good story. A Christmas Gift for Rose by Tricia Goyer is a gentle story of a young Amish woman whose best laid plans are going awry. It begins with her love, Jonathan, going off to World War II to serve as a medic. This is a major no no for the Amish. Other young Amish men sat out their days in prison or government work programs for dodging the draft as conscientious objectors. When the community finds out Jonathan went to war, they pressure Rose over his decision.
She then found she was adopted which leaves her feeling lost, alone, and afraid. Her decisions about how to handle the situations will shape her life forever. Tricia Goyer based this novel on a true story an Amish man told her of his grandmother growing up in the Great Depression and how her Englisch family left her with an Amish family to raise because of their extreme poverty.
This is a relaxing book to read during the holiday season that will encourage you to strengthen your faith and to be close to your family.

Rose Yoder has always felt a little different from her siblings in her love for pretty things and desire to decorate her family home, but she’d never considered leaving her Amish community. Her dream to settle down and start a family of her own is put on hold when her beau, Jonathan Fisher, signs up to work as a medic during the Second World War. Rose is conflicted, as she loves Jonathan but doesn’t believe he’ll be comfortable settling for an Amish life after all he’s seen of the world. But her own loyalty to her community is tested when she learns that she was originally born to an English family, and adopted by the Yoders as a young child. Knowing how her community treated Jonathan for serving during the war, she fears how they will treat her if they know she isn’t truly Amish. As Christmas draws near, Rose yearns to find out what happened to the family who gave her up for adoption. Perhaps learning the truth about her past will help her come to peace with her future. Will her discoveries aid her in finding her place in the world, or only confuse her further?
Tricia Goyer is a prolific writer, penning Amish and Historical novels as well as blogging about her personal life on a regular basis. Most recently, I’ve been intrigued by Tricia’s articles on the children she and her husband have adopted into their family. When I saw that her Christmas novella was going to be an Amish Historical novel about a woman who was adopted, I couldn’t help but be intrigued—especially as the book was set at the end of the Second World War, one of Tricia’s favourite historical settings. Could she pull off this myriad of subjects without the novella feeling messy or rushed? I wondered. With a mixture of scepticism and excitement, I signed up to review this novel, and I’m definitely glad that I did.
I will admit that it took me a while to warm up to Rose. Initially, she spent a lot of time worrying about her relationship with Jonathan (and the news of her adoption) and it took her a while to actually sit down and tell him how she felt. I will admit that I have been guilty of this type of behaviour in the past, so I have no doubt that it’s realistic, but the initial conflict between Rose and Jonathan felt drawn out given how rapidly things changed once they had a serious talk. As is incredibly common in romance novels, communication is the key! Once Rose and Jonathan got all their feelings out in the open, the story definitely moved faster.
Rose’s adoption storyline is deftly woven into the historical setting of the novel, and it’s impossible to talk about one without the other. It might be difficult for some to read about a family forced to give up a child during the depression because they couldn’t support her, but I have no doubt that stories like Rose’s were incredibly common during this time period. Tricia is always excellent at bringing realism into her historical novels, and A Christmas Gift for Rose is no exception. While I don’t have any personal experience of adoption (although my youngest uncle is adopted), Rose’s reaction to the truth of her past felt believable. I particularly appreciated the way that her parents and siblings supported her and understood her need to learn what happened to her family. Some Amish families come across as harsh and unsympathetic—particularly the men—so it was a nice change to hear about Rose’s dad and brother helping her during this time.
This novella also touches on the subject of how the Amish were treated during the Second World War. Although Murray Pura has written more detailed books on the subject of the Amish during various wars, Tricia’s brief treatment of the subject didn’t feel lacking in any way. My favourite part of this aspect of A Christmas Gift for Rose is that none of the storylines about the after effects of the war were tied up neatly. We’re still not certain if all the community members will welcome Jonathan back at the end of the novella, and the English neighbour struggling with PTSD has hope, but doesn’t know if he’ll ever completely heal. I know that most people like their Christmas stories to be tied up neatly, but that’s not possible when it comes to a subject like this, and I appreciated Tricia’s realism in this respect.

Once I thought about it for a while, I decided that I was quite satisfied with the ending to A Christmas Gift for Rose. As I said, not everything is tied up neatly, and there are some things Rose will never get to find out about her family. But she, her family and Jonathan are all satisfied with the outcome to Rose’s explorations, and I believe I am as well. Although Jonathan was present in this novel less than I’d expected, I was happy with the way he featured in the final chapter of the novel. Rose and Jonathan’s storyline isn’t your typical romance, but the conclusion is sure to please any romantic at heart.
If you’re sceptical about the possibility of an author being able to pull off a Historical Amish Christmas Romance set right after the end of the Second World War that deals with adoption and PTSD, take my word for it—Tricia knows what she’s doing with this novella. Tricia has long been a favourite author of mine, and this novella is a perfect example of her ability to create a touching story full of realistic characters that deal with difficult subject matters.

Tricia Goyer is a prolific writer, penning Amish and Historical novels as well as blogging about her personal life on a regular basis. Most recently, I’ve been intrigued by Tricia’s articles on the children she and her husband have adopted into their family. When I saw that her Christmas novella was going to be an Amish Historical novel about a woman who was adopted, I couldn’t help but be intrigued—especially as the book was set at the end of the Second World War, one of Tricia’s favourite historical settings. Could she pull off this myriad of subjects without the novella feeling messy or rushed? I wondered. With a mixture of scepticism and excitement, I signed up to review this novel, and I’m definitely glad that I did.
I will admit that it took me a while to warm up to Rose. Initially, she spent a lot of time worrying about her relationship with Jonathan (and the news of her adoption) and it took her a while to actually sit down and tell him how she felt. I will admit that I have been guilty of this type of behaviour in the past, so I have no doubt that it’s realistic, but the initial conflict between Rose and Jonathan felt drawn out given how rapidly things changed once they had a serious talk. As is incredibly common in romance novels, communication is the key! Once Rose and Jonathan got all their feelings out in the open, the story definitely moved faster.
Rose’s adoption storyline is deftly woven into the historical setting of the novel, and it’s impossible to talk about one without the other. It might be difficult for some to read about a family forced to give up a child during the depression because they couldn’t support her, but I have no doubt that stories like Rose’s were incredibly common during this time period. While I don’t have any personal experience of adoption (although my youngest uncle is adopted), Rose’s reaction to the truth of her past felt believable. I particularly appreciated the way that her parents and siblings supported her and understood her need to learn what happened to her family. Some Amish families come across as harsh and unsympathetic—particularly the men—so it was a nice change to hear about Rose’s dad and brother helping her during this time.
