The glow from the fireplace throws an eerie light over the woman’s carefully arranged body, her lifeless eyes reflecting the flames that slowly burn the evidence of who did this to her…
When Detective Amanda Steele is called to the brutal murder scene of successful local author Felicity Kelley , her blood runs cold. Because Amanda not only knew the victim, but was the last person Felicity called moments before she was murdered. Plagued with guilt that she never answered, Amanda is left wondering whether she could have prevented the murder, and vows to catch the killer, no matter what.
Desperately searching the crime scene for clues, Amanda is shocked when she discovers a Queen of Hearts playing card, suggesting the murder could be an imitation of a scene from Felicity’s bestselling crime novel. Terrified that she is dealing with a crazed fan who could strike again, Amanda’s worst fears are confirmed when another innocent woman is viciously murdered, with the same chilling calling card left behind.
But when Amanda connects the murders with a cold case from fifteen years ago, a case that Felicity appears to have been researching for her next novel, she is forced to question if the killer’s motive is even more sinister than she first suspected. But the closer Amanda gets to unearthing this motive, the closer she gets to becoming the next victim…
CAROLYN ARNOLD is an international bestselling and award-winning author, as well as a speaker, teacher, and inspirational mentor. She has several continuing fiction series and has nearly thirty published books. Her genre diversity offers her readers everything from cozy to hard-boiled mysteries, and thrillers to action adventures. Her crime fiction series have been praised by those in law enforcement as being accurate and entertaining. This led to her adopting the trademark: POLICE PROCEDURALS RESPECTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT™.
Carolyn was born in a small town and enjoys spending time outdoors, but she also loves the lights of a big city. Grounded by her roots and lifted by her dreams, her overactive imagination insists that she tell her stories. Her intention is to touch the hearts of millions with her books, to entertain, inspire, and empower.
She currently lives near London, Ontario, Canada with her husband and two beagles.
A killer, a missing novel, and a playing card are a few of the elements in Her Last Words by Carolyn Arnold. This engaging police procedural is the nineth book in the Detective Amanda Steele series and it packs a punch. The setting largely takes place in Prince William County in northern Virginia and features Detective Amanda Steele. Amanda, a seasoned detective, is partnered with Detective Trent Stenson.
Even though homicide detectives Amanda and Trent aren’t the initial detectives at the scene, they head to the crime scene when Amanda finds out author Felicity Kelley is dead. Felicity had called Amanda yesterday when Amanda and her family were on a plane coming back from a Florida vacation. When a Queen of Hearts playing card is found at the scene, speculation begins on whether the murder is an imitation of Kelley’s most recent novel. However, that is only the beginning of trying to identify a motive as well as the killer.
Amanda doesn’t get much down time and has zero hobbies. She hates being idle and feels guilt and regret while trying to balance her family and work lives. Amanda’s flaws and struggles made her seem realistic. Trent is loyal, funny, and always has Amanda’s back.
The author brings action and intense moments to the novel. The story built a little less suspense into the story line. Despite this, the plot is intriguing, full of chasing down leads and interviewing suspects and witnesses in anticipation of identifying the killer. Additionally, there are also threads of her personal life and dealing with loss and grief.
This fast-paced novel is full of a sense of urgency. However, the murderer was a little too predictable. The author weaves murder, relationships, family dynamics, grief, bullying, and more into a finely crafted tale.
Overall, this novel was engaging, entertaining, and a solid police procedural. I can’t wait to find out what is next for Amanda and Trent. I recommend this series to those that like police procedurals and crime thrillers with relatable and likeable main characters.
Bookouture and Carolyn Arnold provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently expected to be October 17, 2023.
---------------------------------------- My 4.20 rounded to 4 stars review is coming soon.
Mystery writer Felicity Kelley is murdered just as she is about to reach the pinnacle of her success; her most recent book is to be made into a film. Her last phone call which went unanswered was to Detective Amanda Steele. The mystery deepens when it seems her death is a copy cat of the MO of the serial killer in her book. Feeling guilty about not calling Felicity back, Amanda, along with partner Trent, relentlessly pursue the killer. Was it a jilter lover, a jealous colleague, a stalker, a serial killer? And what does it have to do with the murder of an intern in the publishing business fifteen years?
This is yet another of Arnold’s fast paced, engrossing police procedurals. I read it in one day, long into the night, because I could not put it down. Arnold knows how to capture and maintain her readers’ interest. I love the repeating characters, especially Amanda who, despite an earlier tragedy in her life, is a strong, capable, independent female and I find the camaraderie between her and Trent quite entertaining.
This is the ninth in the Prince William County (VA) Detective Amanda Steele series. Although I have read quite a few of them and have enjoyed seeing the repeating characters and relationships change and grow, I think this would work well as a standalone. The author does a nice job of filling in background information, including Amanda’s past history and references to some other cases she has worked.
A word about the author: Carolyn Arnold has written more than thirty books featuring five series and spanning different genre including strong police procedurals, cozy mysteries, and adventure novels.
I love a good Prologue, don’t you? It sets the hook, and Carolyn Arnold did a great job with the Prologue for Her Last Words, but that doesn’t surprise me. I have read a lot of Carolyn Arnold’s books and she never disappoints me. Yeah, they may not all blow my mind, but they do supply hours of entertainment.
I love Detective Amanda Steele. She is a power to be reckoned with…and, even though she is on vacation, when someone she knows is murdered, she’s on the case. Could she have prevented her murder if she had returned Felicity’s call? See carries plenty of guilt already. Does she neglect her family for the job? Isn’t that a question many of us ask ourselves?
Felicity is a successful crime novelist and Amanda was on the case. Could her success have been the catalyst? Could it be her work in progress? She was known for her in depth, detailed research. Could she has found something someone wanted to left undiscovered?
Carolyn Arnold is good at keeping the mystery alive, giving us a plentiful supply of suspects and motives, throwing out red herrings, trying to lead us down the wrong path. In the end, she brings everything together, like pieces to a jigsaw puzzle. Step by step, clue by clue. We have some danger, but it’s not the dark and depraved kind that I love so much. It’s your normal, everyday murderer that could be your neighbor, your boss, your coworker, your friend…
Detective Amanda Steele is in the second week of a much-needed vacation and she finds herself bored stiff. She had recently received a telephone call from an author asking her for police procedural advice for her next novel. She hadn't intended to get in touch with the author, but now she has time on her hands. So, she gives her a call, and is shocked when a fellow detective answers her phone. She was Felicity Kelley and she was found murdered by a dear friend. While not Amanda's case initially, Amanda and her partner Trent Stenson are able to take over the case.
Evidence at the brutal scene soon leads to a strong connection to Felicity's latest book, The Romeo Killer. In fact, the setting is almost exactly what occurred in the book. Amanda and Trent look hard for answers, starting with the man Felicity had been seeing. Amanda is no stranger to tragedy and is determined to find out who killed Amanda.
Amanda soon discovers that Felicity had been digging deep into a cold case for the novel she was writing, and Amanda can't help but wonder if the crimes are connected. In typical fashion for Amanda, she knows how to dig for answers no matter what it takes. I really enjoyed this ninth book in the Detective Amanda Steele series and am very much looking forward to reading book ten, Missing Before Daylight.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Her Last Words (Detective Amanda Steele Book 9) By Carolyn Arnold Pub Date: 17 Oct 2023 Bookouture General Fiction (Adult) | Mystery & Thrillers Rating: 4.25/5
Amanda Steele is shocked to find a brutal death scene at the home of local author Felicity Kelley. Amanda knows the victim. She realizes she might have been the last person Felicity contacted while alive - and that her own actions might have prevented Felicity's death. Amanda embarks on a quest to find the killer and solve the mystery behind Felicity's brutal murder. She is determined to uncover the truth - even if it means putting her own life in danger.
Having been a long-time fan of Carolyn Arnold's work, I was delighted to read this book. Amanda Steele is always a wonderful character, willing to take risks to solve cases. Her Last Words is an intriguing read with many twists and turns. Plenty of red herrings keep readers on their toes throughout this thrilling adventure. Amanda's courage and determination, combined with Carolyn Arnold's expert storytelling, make Her Last Words a truly captivating read.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for sharing this book with me. Carolyn Arnold's books are always a pleasure to read.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. In Her Last Words, book nine in the Detective Amanda Steele series, Amanda finds herself exploring the publishing world while trying to find the person behind the murder of bestselling crime author, Felicity Kelley. Whilst this is the ninth book in the series, it works well as a stand-alone read. Read on and learn the reason Her Last Words would make a great addition to the reading list of mystery fans.
Bestselling mystery author Felicity Kelley is riding the train of success. Her latest book, The Romeo Killer, is being made into a film. She's working on her next novel, which promises to be explosive. However, as she prepares to put finishing touches on the story for submission, someone chose to end her life. Her last phone call was to Detective Amanda Steele, however, the call went unanswered. Amanda was on her way home from holiday, when she received the message. She returned the call the following day, only to learn of Felicity's murder. Overwhelmed by guilt for not responding sooner, she requests the case be assigned to her and Trent, despite the fact her leave was far from over.
On the surface, the case appears open and shut. However, when Amanda dug below the surface, she found a possible connection to a fifteen-year-old murder case. Amanda along with Trent finds themselves in a race against time to find the killer before they decide to strike again.
Once again, Arnold delivered a tale designed to keep readers glued to the pages. This is a one sitting due to its engrossing storyline. I enjoyed following the clues along with detectives. I am not sure if it is because I am familiar with the author's style, but I guessed the identity of the murderer, the moment a particular clue came to light. So the revelation came as no shock to me. Having guessed the identity from early did not diminish my enjoyment of the story. As a matter of fact, it compelled me to keep reading to see if my hunch was correct.
Amanda has proven once again the reason she is such a good detective. Her determination, attention to details and her desire for justice lights up the pages. It's hard balancing her personal and work life. However, the support of her significant other and her adopted daughter helps to ease some of the pressure.
Overall, Arnold delivered an engaging and solid mystery. I look forward to the next book in the series, which based on the summary promises to be another enthralling tale. 'Her Last Words' is perfect for readers looking for a thrilling mystery which features a great cast of characters. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading
This is a great crime thriller. Amanda is called when a local author is found dead in her home and it seems she was the last person the victim called. The author wrote crime fiction and it soon materialises that the card found on her body is the same as in her last book. With investigations underway Amanda and Trent come across a cold case from 15 years ago and it seems the two murders are connected. This is a gripping crime thriller. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a good next book in the Detective Amanda Steele series. I have enjoyed reading this series and was excited to get to read the next one. Amanda always seems to get involved in the crazy cases and this one hits close to her since she knew the victim from a previous investigation! I like how some of her cases are intertwined, it keeps it interesting.
The plot of this one was fun, I enjoyed that the murders were actually based on Felicity’s book. It made it just a different type of case to solve and to figure out why someone would use the victims’ own story to conduct their killings. Of course, there was a possible connection to a cold case that the victim was not killed in the same way. However, you learn that this is what Felicity’s next book was going to be about and maybe she was just a little too good at her research. There were a lot of people who you are introduced to that you think could this be the murderer? I know that I guessed on a few different people before finding out who it was and I did not guess correctly. I like it when I am surprised at who the murderer is because I feel a lot of times you are able to figure it out.
I like that we are seeing a little more of Amanda and her relationship with Zoe and Logan. The one thing that I found slightly odd in this is how it keeps getting brought up about her and her partner, Trent, and how they kissed. It makes it seem like she still has a question about if things could happen with them, but she is in love with Logan and he lives with her and Zoe. I like the partner/friend dynamic that Trent and Amanda have and hope it stays on track and doesn’t get messed up because they work well together. It was nice to still see Malone being involved and helping with the case and of course all the usual people who have been around helping solve cases like the CSI’s and medial examiner.
This was a good continuation in the series and I enjoyed reading it. I am excited to see what crazy case Amanda will be involved in next.
Detective Amanda Steele is back. In another twisty police procedural. Which sees Amanda cut her vacation short when she learns mystery writer Felicity Kelley has been murdered and her last contact was a message left on Amanda's phone.
And so Amanda feeling guilty for missing the call is desperate to get herself and partner Trent assigned the case and after sweet talking her boss he agrees to let them run it.
But the scene is an odd one and it gets odder too. When Amanda and Trent learn Felicity was killed just like a character in her best selling novel 'The Romeo Killer'
And as the pair start to dig into Felicity's life and look for anyone who had a grudge against her another body is found again mimicking perfectly a scene from her novel.
But this time Amanda and Trent have a clue to go on.
And now the race is on for them to find a smart and calculating killer before its too late.
And with great pacing, the perfect amount of twists and a killer I wasn't expecting. This was an enjoyable and engaging addition to the series, and I'd happily recommend it to all.
My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an early copy of Her Last Words. 😊
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Carolyn Arnold, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 17th October 2023.
This is the seventh book I have read by this author. It is also the ninth book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Stolen Daughters' which I also highly recommend and is the second book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series 'The Silent Witness' which is the third book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series, 'Black Orchid Girls' which is the fourth book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series, 'Her Frozen Cry' which is the fifth book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series, 'Last Seen Alive' by which is the sixth book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series, 'Her Final Breath' which is the seventh book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series and 'Taken Girls ' which is the eighth book in this series.. Each book can be read as a standalone and I would recommend them all.
This novel consists of a prologue, 47 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
Yet another epic read from the very talented Carolyn Arnold!!! Absolutely rammed full of twists and turns!! Congratulations Carolyn on yet another page turner!!
This is an extremely well written book with vivid descriptions that will suck you straight into the storyline and captivated from beginning to end. The synopsis and cover worked perfectly with the storyline.
Every time I see a Carolyn Arnold book I just know I have to read it and that it will be amazing and that's without me even bothering to read the synopsis and this one was exactly the same!!! The storyline means that there is no problem with this being read as a standalone. I was absolutely hooked throughout, a true page turner from beginning to end. Carolyn is one of those amazing authors who writes these epic books that when you are reading them you promise yourself one more chapter and then you'll go to sleep but each time she ends her chapters in a way that has you hooked so you have to read just one more, but then another and before you know it you have walked around all day with the book glued to your hands and have devoured it in one sitting!!! The storyline was in depth and packed with suspense, books, murder, twists, family, tension, hate, grief, intensity, bullying, shocks and was an edge of your seat, nail biting and heart racing psychological thriller. One of the extra things I loved about this book is that she delves into the world of books and publication with the victim being a high selling author. I loved discovering the different aspects involved when it comes to creating a book and the people involved from editing to publication along with finding more about the literary processing. Of course with Carolyn being such an amazing author herself she wouldn't have needed much, if any extra research on this subject but I would love to see Carolyn's work hit the big screen like Felicity Kelley's was ready to! I was absolutely hooked. I read this book in less than 24 hours and I'm looking forward to reading the previous books in this series as well as more to come. This series is extremely addictive and I cannot wait to see what the next "episode" brings!! This book is an absolute rollercoaster ride filled with twists, action, murder, heartbreak, suffering, suspense and everything you could ask for in an absolutely thrilling page turner. As always with Carolyn's book I was mind blown when the killer was revealed so a huge congratulations Carolyn!! After reading hundreds of crimes and thrillers it's getting harder and harder to shock me but at no point did I even consider them!!! If you want to know more about this absolutely epic page turner which you will have to grab your copy today to get them!!! It is one of the best books I have read this year and I really enjoyed and loved the ending!!! It is filled with suspense, tension, mystery, shocks, love, friendship, sadness, crime and everything you could ever want in a crime novel. As always Carolyn ensures there were no loose ends at the book and that everything was explained and tied up. It is one of my pet hates having loose ends at the end of a book so well done Carolyn!! I won't say more as not to spoil it for future readers. It is a true page turner that will leave you biting your nails on the edge of your seat with your heart racing. I cannot wait to see what Amanda and Trent are going to do now!!!! Hope your busy typing the next one up Carolyn as I cannot wait!!!
Although this is the ninth book in the series you will have absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I loved meeting all the characters again who were all strong, well defined and unique. I have become completely invested in Amanda, Trent and Zoe along with all of the other amazing characters through reading these books and they now feel like family that I miss when I come to the end of one book but am excited to see again at the beginning of the next!! Amanda is absolutely whoop a## and I love seeing strong female leads in books. She has a background but will not let it pull her down and she is definitely someone I would love to have on my side. It has been so bitter sweet watching her bond with Zoe even more and watching their relationship develop and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. I've also enjoyed seeing Zoe's confidence growing book by book after everything she went through. They have become like a family to me along with Trent and Malone. Trent is another fantastic team member and they work perfectly well together. I love Rideout's (medical examiner) character and personality with his morgue humour and I also like Malone and see him as a sort of fatherly figure to Amanda. It was intriguing to see the interactions between Amanda and Trent after what happened in previous books and I'm glad to see that it hasn't affected their partnership and that they still make the most amazing team out there!! These characters are all truly unforgettable and have become like friends that I love meeting again and am sad when it comes to the end and I have to say goodbye to them. Alongside the main characters Carolyn always creates interesting and realistic characters for each crime and in this book we revisit the sister of a character who was murdered in a previous case so it's interesting to get to revisit some characters and their backgrounds. A fantastic group of intriguing, realistic and solid characters all brought to life by Carolyn's fantastic evocative writing skills!! I am definitely looking forward to meeting them all (well almost all) again!!!
This is exactly why you are one of my favourite authors Carolyn!!! Here is to your next guaranteed success 🥂!!
I could not praise this book enough and highly recommend. Carolyn I cannot wait to read more of your very successful work!!! I would also love to see this book turned into a movie. Another absolutely addictive, compelling and gripping true page turner!!! If you have not read any books by this epic authour then you are seriously missing out!!!
Overall another absolutely captivating, engrossing page turner that is compelling and addictive by an extremely talented author!!!

This authors talent knows no bounds. So well written it becomes an experience. These characters are so well done they feel like family. Terrifying plot full of twists and turns that you don’t see coming. A classic whodunit but ramped up to a terror filled immersive tale. You won’t be able to put this one down once you start reading. There are so many twists to get to the jaw dropping finale. An absolute must read.
Her Last Words is the 9th book in the crime thriller series, Detective Amanda Steele. The story opens with Felicity Kelley calling Amanda to talk to her about something she is worried about. She met Amanda when she and Trent investigated her sister's death and solve that case. Amanda is on a plane flying home from a vacation so she has to leave a message. When Amanda calls her back, her phone is answered by a police detective working in her department, Felicity is dead. Amanda heads to the crime scene and asks her boss to let her take over the case. Her request is granted and now she and Trent are trying to find a killer where there are very few leads or clues. When a second murder occurs, with the crime looking exactly like the murders in Felicity's last book, they are trying to find the killer before another woman ends up dead.
I really enjoyed this story. It was interesting to see Amanda and Trent dig out clues, information and leads. They were willing to put their necks on the line delving into a cold case to solve this crime. I really like how Trent and Amanda work together. They are such great partners, they can almost read each other's minds. With all Felicity's research and notes missing, they are sure the murder has to do with her newest book that she has not turned in yet, but who knows what is in it, and is there a back up somewhere. This story had me reading it in one day, staying up late to finish. I really enjoyed the mystery and how they went about solving it. I didn't have any idea who the culprit was, until just before it was revealed. Another gripping, twisty book in this excellent crime thriller series. I definitely recommend it.
Her Last Words is the ninth book in the Detective Amanda Steele series. This can be a stand-alone read but the series is fantastic and worth reading each and every one.
Amanda is on her way home from vacation with her family when she receives a message asking her to call when she gets a moment. The next day she calls Felicity Kelley but a detective she recognizes answers the phone and wants to know why she is calling. She is told that Felicity has been murdered and she heads to the crime scene feeling guilty for not picking up the call.
Detective Amanda Steele and her partner Trent will be taking over the case since they had worked with the victim in the past. As they search for clues a Queen of Hearts playing card is found in the mouth of the victim. They wonder if it is linked to Felicity's most recent book she had written.
The murders will eerily connect to a cold case from fifteen years ago, a case that Felicity was researching for her next novel, Another body will turn up but is the killer close by and trying to misdirect Amanda and her partner.
This was a great addition to the series. I really enjoy the writing and the characters. It is an intense page turner that is very rewarding.
I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review.
I always enjoy a Carolyn Arnold novel, and Her Last Words fits right in there with the best of them. This is the ninth novel in the Amanda Seele series but it is stand-alone. As with all series, the tale is richer and more easily followed if you are already familiar with the many characters involved in the mystery.
Amanda is called back from a vacation with her family due to the murder of a local author, Felicity Kelley, in a crime much too similar to that portrayed in her last published best-selling mystery novel, The Romeo Killer, one that is soon to be made into a movie. Because Amanda knew the victim, and was the last person she called, just moments before her death.
The over-due but completed manuscript of Felicity's next book is missing, as well as her computer, backup drives, and printed matter relating to her past as well as current work. Her publishing house and her best friend are most helpful, but clues seem to be elusive or dead ends. Amanda is leaning toward tying this crime to an unsolved murder from years ago, but that too is presenting problems, though her instincts keep her working in that direction. But when she finds out the context of the missing novel, that unsolved murder becomes of vital importance in solving this current crime. Proving it, however, is not looking good. Amanda and her partner Trent Stenson have their work cut out for them in this one. REVIEWED on February 27, 2024, at Goodreads, AmazonSmile, Barnes&Noble, and BookBub.
Every book I have read from the author I have loved Carolyn's latest book was no different. Her Last Words by Carolyn Arnold was another excellent read form start to finish. Especially as its the Ninth book in the excellent Detective Amanda Steele series and a series that has just got better and better........I can see another five stars coming for this book.
Yeap! Another 5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ read.
I highly recommend this series
Big Thank you to Netgalley and especially Bookouture for my ARC.
When Detective Amanda Steele is called to the brutal murder scene of successful local author Felicity Kelley, her blood runs cold. Because Amanda not only knew the victim but was the last person Felicity called moments before she was murdered. Plagued with guilt that she never answered, Amanda is left wondering whether she could have prevented the murder and vows to catch the killer in Her Last Words (a Detective Amanda Steele Book 9) by Carolyn Arnold.
I love this series. I had a hard time putting this book and other books by Carolyn Arnold down. Once you start the story, you are engrossed and taken on a wild adventure with well-developed characters, a gripping storyline, and a gripping and addictive crime thriller.
I love the covers of these books as they capture the essence of the story's mystery.
Her Last Words is an excellent police procedural with surprise twists and turns that keep you glued to the pages.
I highly recommend this series and this author. Her Last Words is a great addition to the Amanda Steele collection.
Carolyn Arnold has mastered writing a police procedural mystery down to a science. The books in this series just seem to get better and better with each installment. Detective Amanda Steele is called to the scene of brutal homicide. She is shocked to her core to find out the victim is a wildly successful and popular author, Felicity Kelley. What makes this scene even more bizarre is the scene itself. The scene mimics scenes from her most recent serial killer novel down to the Queen of Hearts card stuffed down her throat. The case is made even more personal as Amanda realizes the last call Felicity made was to leave a voicemail for Amanda. The question for Steele and company is for them to figure out whether this is a personal kill because of a deranged fan or enemy, or is someone making fiction come true. The tempo and sense of urgency picks up steam when another body is found. This one is even more disturbing because everything about this scene, down to the clothes on the victim's back, are straight from the pages of the novel written by Felicity Kelley. When another chilling clue is found from a previous case, the tension and suspense are amped up considerably.
The suspects start piling up as the investigation gets deeper. I was not sure who or what to believe. Detective Amanda Steele is one of my favorite fictional characters. Her sense of duty as a detective often plays against her sense of duty as a mother and partner. Amanda Steele shows the real life side of being a detective and spending so much time simply doing her job. She may take personal time, but she is always on call, if needed. She is fearless and her sense of justice points in the right direction. All of the characters in this book and this series are interesting. The plotline is frantic as they try to find a killer who is smart and calculating. I could not sleep until I finished it. I know when I start a Carolyn Arnold book that I will not be satisfied until I finish it, as she is a winsome storyteller who knows how to pull the reader into the story. If you are a puzzle lover, you will enjoy this book as the book concludes and everything neatly falls into place to complete the puzzle.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Her Last Words is the first Carolyn Arnold novel that I have read. This novel is the 9th in the Detective Amanda Steele series. Her Last Words does function very well as a stand alone novel. Arnold manages to provide just enough gentle reminders of Steele's background story to bring new readers up to date about her past, while not creating an overload of detail.
Her Last Words is very good and does hold the attention of readers. The plot slowly unwinds with just enough plot information to keep readers interested, while also making sure that putting down the novel and going on to something else is just about impossible. The plot works well, with just enough hints to help readers think they might have the answers, without actually giving away too much detail. The characters in Her Last Words are well written and interesting. None of these characters are so detailed that the reader becomes distracted by a possible killer. and while the guilty party is not a surprise if readers are paying close attention to the hints, the denouement is still just enough of a mystery solved for most readers.
Her Last Words is very much a successful police procedural. Arnold clearly knows how to write a successful murder mystery. A big thank you to Arnold and to her publishers, Bookouture, for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review. I absolutely enjoyed this novel, very much. I will certainly recommend it to friends and to my book club. Thank you to NetGalley for helping me find another publisher and author to enjoy.

In this latest installment, Detective Amanda Steele faces a chilling case with close personal ties. When a familiar author reaches out for help, Steele is away and tragically unable to respond before murder strikes. Driven by guilt and duty, Steele takes charge of bringing the killer to justice.
The murder scene eerily resembles the author's own bestselling crime novel, casting suspicion on a wide pool of suspects. As Steele digs deeper into the victim's connections and dealings, she uncovers a hidden murder connected to the murdered authors work.
This book has all the ingredients - drama, action, secrets - to keep mystery lovers hooked cover to cover. My thanks to NetGalley for an early preview copy of this gripping crime fiction novel.
Book Review: Her Last Words: A gripping and utterly addictive crime thriller (Detective Amanda Steele Book 9 Full disclosure - I was provided an advanced reader’s copy of this book by the author or their representative but have voluntarily provided a review. All opinions are my own.
Detective Steele is back in another page turner
After finally getting a much-needed vacation with Logan and Zoe, Amanda Steele feels refreshed and almost ready to return to her duties as a detective with the Prince William County PD. Freshly landed from sun-soaked Florida, she notices a missed call from a local author. Thinking nothing of it she decides to call Felicity in a few days when she is officially back from her break. But when Felicity Kelly is discovered murdered the next day, Amanda knows she cannot sit idly by while a colleague takes the case. As her and her partner Trent Stenson arrive at the scene they notice a meticulously set tableau that bears striking similarities to the author’s current blockbuster thriller novel The Romeo Killer. The more the pair dig into the author’s death, the more they cannot rule out anyone including a playboy ex-boyfriend, borderline obsessive “super fan” or a completely unrelated perp. But something does not sit right with Amanda and when she delves into Kelly’s current work in progress she wonders if the author’s penchant for taking cold cases and adding “what if” scenarios didn’t contribute to her demise. Could the author have gotten too close to the real killer in her latest novel? When another body is discovered Amanda wonders if her and Trent are off the mark or if this is a clever play by the killer to throw them off their trail. The case finally receives a break when the pair stumble on an unlikely lead, but will it be too late to catch a killer and bring justice to their victim?
Her Last Words is the latest in the Detective Amanda Steele series of books by author Carolyn Arnold. Prince William County Virginia is apparently a very small place, and if it wasn’t apparent before, it is even more so with this installment. As the victim is none other than the sister of the deceased in an earlier case Amanda feels personally invested in finding the killer so she can bring some closure to this already grieving family. Felicity Kelly’s penchant for taking cold cases and giving them a new spin may have been her undoing as the case she chose seems to have landed too close to her career in the publishing world. Amanda and Trent much separate what is actual lead from the efforts of the murderer to throw the cops off the case. With their thorough efforts to interview all involved parties the possibility that they have already spoken to their killer does not sit well with the duo.
In Her Last Words Carolyn Arnold has crafted a fast-paced page turner that will have the reader playing armchair detective along with the deceased. Being a homicide detective is not an easy job even when there isn’t a case and Arnold’s portrayal of Logan and Zoe’s flexibility with her unpredictable schedule is as endearing as it is heartbreaking. Amanda’s large family also continues to provide an unwavering web of support for the small budding family including the sage advice and support of her father the retired PWCPD chief of police. The dynamic with Amanda and her partner continues to be a particularly interesting aspect, and while it seems that they have moved on from their ill-advised kiss a few years back it still continues to be an elephant in the room even if it is fading. It will be interesting to see where or if Arnold takes this in upcoming cases. While Her Last Words is part of a series, Arnold has structured this and pretty much all her series novels as offerings that can be read stand alone or in chronological order.
If you like a strong, fearless female lead, likeable characters and murder cases that will have you guessing until the very end Her Last Words will be a nice addition to any TBR.
Her Last Words by Carolyn Arnold is the 9th book in her fantastic Detective Amanda Steele series. I am a big fan of Arnold, having read most of her books, and I love this series, which continues with another great addition. Her Last Words was a fantastic read, with me unable to put the book down.
Amanda Steele, our heroine, is a homicide detective in Dumfries, Virginia Police Department. Amanda returns home from a vacation with her boyfriend Logan and adopted daughter, Zoe: when she sees a voice message from a famous writer, Felicity Kelley. The following morning, Amanda receives word that Felicity Kelley was found murdered. Since she and Trent were on an old case revolving Felicity’ sister, they both headed to the crime scene, and were given control of finding the case. Felicity was stabbed with a knife in her heart, as well as a Queen of Hearts playing card in her throat, which turns out to be a clue from Felicity’s newest bestselling crime novel.
In a short time, Amanda begins to connect the murders from a cold case 15 years ago, which Felicity was researching for her next novel. Amanda and Trent interview all the people involved with a publishing house, as well as investigating the dead woman from 15 years ago, to tie in the missing pieces. When another woman is murdered, with the same Queen of Hearts playing card, her and Trent suspect that someone is trying to throw them off the case.
I loved how Amanda is able to allow herself to take a weekend off to be with her daughter and Logan, to spend some quiet fun peaceful time away from the case. This was a very good change. Her and Trent make great partners, always helping each other.
What follows is an exciting, suspenseful, intriguing, tense mystery, that kept me unable to put the book down, as this was a fantastic thriller. From the start, you become engrossed into the story. The last third of the book was fast-paced, intense, exciting thriller, with many twists along the way. To say too much more would be spoilers.
Her Last Words was another fantastic crime thriller that held my breath throughout. This once again is an excellent police procedural, great characters, gripping storyline, and surprise twists along the way. Her Last Words was once again so very well written by Carolyn Arnold, which is the norm for this author; as I am loving this series. If you like mystery thrillers, police procedural, then you need to be reading this series.
We are back with Detective Amanda Steele in the 9th book "Her Last Words" by Carolyn Arnold. Since we saw her last, her mentor Malone is back to being the Chief and she is back from spending a holiday with her partner Logan Hunter and daughter Zoe. When she discovers that Felicity Kelley, a famous author, whom she had known in the course of an investigation had been killed, she drafts herself up to the find the person who had killed the person she had grown fond of.
The scene of the murder resembles a murder scene Felicity has in her best-selling book and Amanda and her partner Trent initially think it might be three work of a fan or a serial killer mimicking the book. But when further evidence are unearthed, they lead the team to a cold case which is about 15 years old, based on which Felicity was writing her next book.
Matters are further muddied when another murder occurs in the exact way as the murder in the book and the team are left to wonder which direction their investigation should take. Will the team find their culprit before more murders occur?
There are quite a number of good things in the book. The way Amanda has moved on from her personal loss is heartwarming. She has opened herself up to life once again and that is lovely to see. Inspite of her growing closeness with Logan, she is also still attracted to her partner Trent. The complexities of her personal relationships with people and the way she manages them make for a deep and rich character sketch. The case is also intriguing enough, particularly in the beginning, to hook the reader into the story.
However, I was able to guess the identity of the killer by the time I was more than half way through the book. Arnold did set up a pretty interesting narrative to the final reveal but I partly lost interest because of this. I still was able to enjoy the book and the dynamics between the various people made up for a good reading experience. And I still would love to read more of Amanda Steele.
In Her Last Words, author Carolyn Arnold has another hit police procedural. A woman has been killed. One of Felicity Kelley’s last calls was to Detective Amanda Steele. She had been on a plane when the call came in and so didn’t respond until the next morning when one of her colleagues, Detective Hudson, answered the phone and imparted the news that Felicity had been murdered. Amanda had met Felicity several years prior when she had investigated the murder of Felicity’s sister. Was this family supremely unlucky or what? She called her partner, Trent Stenson, who met her at the station and they arrived at the scene together. They were not entirely welcome but their boss quicjky reassigned the case to them, which made them even less popular.
Amanda Steel is a woman who has lived through a lot and has just now started coming out of it. Her family had been in a car wreck, murdered really, in which her husband, daughter, and unborn child were killed. It nearly destroyed her but she put that pain to use in solving murders and has been very successful. She is now living with and committed to Logan and they have an adopted daughter named Zoe. Amanda had found Zoe hiding in her parents’ bedroom after they had been killed. She had seen it all. Zoe is recovering better than Amanda, and Logan is a hero. Trent Stenson had been her partner for several years. They had crossed the line one time and kissed, and it still haunted hem both. But, they are an excellent team and this was a curious puzzle which they would solve. The mystery was quite good, a trademark for Arnold and the characters were meet along the way are interesting and varied. Arnold writes a good mystery. It was quite a good read.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Her Last Words by Bookoutre, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Bookoutre #CarolynArnold #HerLastWords
Everytime a new Detective Amanda Steele book lands in my inbox I smile a stupid smile. It's just one of those series that you can fall straight back into like hugging an old friend and book #9 was no different. A comfy space was found and i did not move from the very first page until the very last.
Amanda is on annual leave, not yet due back for a few days shes actually starting to get bored (but won't admit it) so when a call comes in that she's needed... as a witness... she's obviously shocked and goes against protocol to head to the crime scene.
The victim is a local crime author Felicity Kelley who Amamda has had dealings with previously and is the last person that she called! The guilt sets in, Amanda was flying so was unable to take the call but promised herself she'd call Felicity back. Could she have saved her?
Detective Steele and her partner Trent are given the case, begrudgingly and start to gather evidence including a playing card left on the body that matches the victim in Felicity's latest book. Felicity has just hit the pinnacle of her career after being offered a movie deal so where has it all gone wrong and who would want her dead?
Digging deep, as we've come to expect with this team, they uncover a cold case from 15 years ago that bares resemblance, are they connected? Can they find a motive to get to the killer?
A fast paced novel that has a real sense of urgency, in turn makes you feel you have no choice but to carry on reading (that's my excuse anyway). Action packed with many twists and turns expertly weaved in but also having threads of personal lives intertwined.
Each installment just gets better and better, Carolyn Arnold is a master at writing this genre and never fails to disappoint. As always I'll be waiting on tenderhooks for #10.
The biggest thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
Her Last Words is the ninth book in the Detective Amanda Steele Series by Carolyn Arnold. And like all the books before it Her Last Words drew me in from the first page. I couldn’t take my eyes off the page as Detective Amanda Steele was on her way home from a vacation with her family when she received a call from a friend. But she doesn’t answer. Believing whatever it is can wait until tomorrow.
Later after she is home she calls her friend back the next day but it is not her friend who answers, no it is someone calling from the crime scene informing Amanda that her friend had been murdered. Amanda races to the crime scene with her partner Detective Trent Stenson.
Amanda feels really bad that she didn’t call her friend back immediately. She wonders if she had called her back could it have saved her life? Amanda’s friend is author Felicity Kelley. After combing through the crime scene Amanda wonders if Felicity’s death could have anything to do with her latest book.
After extensive investigating into the case, Amanda discovers that Felicity’s book was based on a cold case from many years ago. Was Felicity getting close to solving the cold case while writing her novel? Was she getting close to revealing who the killer was? Was the killer trying to prevent the truth from coming out by murdering Felicity? Well, that is exactly what Amanda intends to find out.
The story gets more intense when more bodies turn up. The suspense and the twists just keep on piling up just like the bodies. Carolyn Arnold knows how to write a story that keeps you coming back for more. She knows how to keep the reader interested and not able to turn the pages as fast as they would like.
I highly recommend Her Last Words to all mystery fans! Grab a copy of Her Last Words today!
I received an ARC through "netGalley" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
The story begins with Felicity, an author, trying to get a hold of Amanda, but gets no answer. She finally leaves a message asking Amanda to call her. The next day after Amanda, Zoe and Logan returned from Orlando, Amanda goes through her calls and discovers a message from Felicity. When she returns the call, she winds uo talking to Fred, a homicide detective where she works. She learns that Felicity has been killed and tell Fred that she is on her way over. Amanda along with her partner Trent arrive at the scene and when Fred balks, she tells Freed that she is taking over the case and her Sargeant, Malone, agrees. As Amanda looks around, she notices that things are different from the last time she was at Felicity's house. There were papers all over, but now everything was quite tidy. She also noticed that there had been a fire in the fireplace and it seemed that something was burned.
As Amanda and Trent start their investigation, they ultimately dlearned that she was working on another novel and once they were finally able to learn the plot, they were convinced that the possibility of an earlier murder was related to this killing. Felicity's killing had all of the earmarks of a scene in Felicity's latest novel. Later, another killing happened which also displayed the same as the novel depicted.
Follow along in the story as Amanda and Trent chase the information they discover and begin to close in on the killer. Discover who the killer was and what was the last piece of the puzzle that provided Amanda whit the suspect.
The ending is well done and this is definitely a book that you must read.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this eARC.
This is a very good read. It started off well and I was immediately drawn into the story which really grabbed my attention and interest quickly. Carolyn Arnold can really connect with her readers in my opinion as I feel I know and like both Steele and Stenson and am always rooting for them. I think this is a very engaging and absorbing read, it is well written, flows easily and I loved being back in the world of the two Detectives and following their investigation as they chase all leads. The story takes place over a short time period which complements it and the author creates so much tension, thrills and suspense through her writing here. The pacing is great and absolutely perfect in my view. I like that the plot went off in a direction I didn't expect, this had me wondering what will come next and making me eagerly turn the pages on my kindle. I did guess who the murderer was, just not the why and all becomes clear in the last part of the book which for me, became a very thrilling, moreish read which I couldn't put down as I was desperate to know how everything would end. If you like police procedurals I think you'd enjoy this book although if you're new to this author I'd suggest you read the series from the beginning to get to know the characters and their histories from the start. Recommended.
When the blurb to this book was released, I knew this would become one of my favorite books of the series — and Carolyn Arnold did not let me down! Her Last Words follows Amanda and Trent as they investigate a novelist who has been murdered with characteristics that align with one of her novels. As an aspiring author myself, this hit straight into my nervous system and had me absorbing every piece of information, desperate to hold onto the tiniest detail with the hopes that I could unravel the mystery of who the killer could be.
I love how well Arnold balances the case along with Amanda’s personal life. Her relationship with Zoe is continuing to grow, change, and adjust to everything going on around them. When the series first started, I was not a fan of Amanda’s. She wasn’t handling things very well and the risk she put on others, in addition to her own career and life, were tough to accept. But now, I’m seeing what I believe to be pieces of who Amanda was before losing Kevin and Lindsay. It’s refreshing! Her relationship with Logan is evolving, too, but deep down, I think she aligns with Trent on a deeper level.
HER LAST WORDS will draw you in if you love mysteries that operate like a puzzle or a deduction word game. I was truly fascinated by how well everything was explained without giving away the culprit. Her research is dead-on, giving the readers a realistic ride of a case!
