THE STORY OF A WOMAN'S NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE, AS TOLD BY A WRITER

In his Introduction to this 1990 book, professor of psychiatry Bruce Greyson (co-author of 'The Near-Death Experience: Problems, Prospects, Perspectives)' says that "this not a far-out story. Barbara's near-death experience is not extraordinary... I have heard hundreds of accounts that are more fantastic, more other-worldly, and more awe-inspiring than hers." (Pg. 2) Greyson also later provides a "Scientific Commentary" on Ms. Harris and the book.

The book states, "Carol [a friend] asked Barbara to see a movie called Resurrection... Little did she know that the spontaneous decision to see Resurrection, a film neither of them knew anything about, would trigger recurring visions of the images she'd seen during the NDE." (Pg. 68)

They recount that "a man who had shunned books most of his life" had an NDE, and began blurting out things such as "quantum," "Max Planck," and even visualized passages from Planck's book Scientific Autobiography and other papers." (Pg. 130-131)

They record a conversation: "'Being close to death is a reliable trigger for this kind of experience, but there are many other triggers besides being close to death,' Barbara said... 'It changed my life completely!' Elaine said. 'You're kind of drafted into this. It's not something that you ask for. All at once you're picked up and put into an experience and brought back to life. It changes your whole perspective.'" (Pg. 188)

They note that Melvin Morse (author of 'Closer To the Light', etc.) said, "When dying was done at home, these experiences were considered part of the dying process. It's only in the last eighty-nine years that people have died in hospitals, where nobody has the time to listen or patients are afraid to talk about what they're experiencing because we've all decided that these visions don't exist. I say these near-death experiences aren't paranormal. They're normal, and we as physicians have to learn more about them and the dying process." (Pg. 205)

Very well-written (Lionel C. Bascom is an experienced writer), this account will be of interest to anyone studying NDEs.

This book was about Barbara Harris, who had a near death experience during a time when she had back surgery. After her NDE, Barbara felt a need to help people near death, and even experienced psychic abilities. Her goal was to become a respiratory therapist, but in the meantime, she became very involved in the world of people studying NDE's, going to conferences, speaking about her NDE, and meeting many people. Barbara wanted as many people as possible to learn about NDE's so in the future, people would not be scared or embarrassed to talk about them, especially in a hospital.
It was interesting to read how after a NDE, life is usually changed-wanting to help others, and feeling more love.
During the early 80's, the organization for near death experiences, IANDS, was found. Barbara worked for and helped this organization tremendously in this book. This organization is still around today with participants all over the US. I also looked up to see what Barbara was doing and it looks like she still speaks about her NDE at various locations.
