The Armchair Bride

Rate this book
Lisa Doyle knows time is running out. She's in danger of becoming the sort of woman who talks to strangers on the bus, wears fur boots and collects cats. She's fast approaching 40 and, as her best friend Andy points out, single.

At a New Year’s Eve party, the pair pledge to turn things around. Andy will find work as an actor and Lisa will find herself a husband. In the cold light of January 1st, she regrets her impulsive words. The regret grows deeper when an invite arrives to her best friend’s wedding. Back home. Where she’ll once again run into everyone from school and have to answer their questions about why she’s still on her own.

From the comfort of her armchair she invents a husband and updates her online status. It seems like a good idea at the time. If only!

The Armchair Bride is funny, bittersweet and frequently downright dark. A love story for the Facebook generation.

About the author

Mo Fanning

Mo Fanning is a British novelist writing contemporary romantic comedy with emotional depth. His novels focus on flawed people, complicated feelings, and the quiet pressures of modern life, balancing humour with heart rather than relying on slapstick or cliché.

He is the author of several novels and short story collections, including Rainbows and Lollipops and Ghosted. His work is known for its distinctly British voice, sharp dialogue, and characters who make understandable but questionable decisions.

Mo lives in the Midlands and writes stories about love, friendship, grief, and the moments where things start to unravel, usually in ways that feel uncomfortably familiar.

Obviously written by a gay man trying so hard to write from a female perspective but it just comes over like drag queen acidity. Apart from the obvious typos and plot holes
I love a good gag but hated the downright nastiness of some of them eg Karen Carpenter anorexia joke and the deplorable chromosome Down Syndrome gag. No need for it. It’s not clever and it’s not funny, just nasty.

Lisa, the main character in The Armchair Bride is sometimes dramatic but she works in a theater, so no surprise. She was not a nice woman that came across as a goody type but a typical woman pushing forty that wants to find Mr. Right before it is too late. She has loyal friends, holds a good job and makes mistakes like everyone else; she also has a temper, says some things she regrets and is sorry for later, pretty much like a normal person.

As for the errors the other reviews mentioned, I did not see them so maybe they are fixed or I just read through them and my brain fixed them for me. The conversations in the story were very British (I being an American found some of them funny but could figure out what they meant easily.) I liked the book personally as it gave a good look into what it is like for everyday people living in England and how they are different from the folks where I live in the Deep South of the US.

Entertaining. Lisa may be over the top for some people but her attitude and behavior would fit right with some of my friends (maybe I need new friends :))

But......the author needs to decide on what her character's are and stick with them. This book was originally published in 2008 and I can't believe that the author hasn't gone back and fixed those errors at least in the e-book format (I got the free Kindle 2012 edition). What's even worse is that the author is/was a teacher according to her bio.

Worse for wear at a New Year party, Lisa and Andy make a couple of rash promises. Lisa will find the man of her dreams and Andy will become famous. Lisa, discovering on a social network site that she’s the last of her old schoolmates who is still single, begins to create an ideal life for herself. Things get tricky when one of school friends invites her and her ‘husband’ to a wedding. Very funny writing.

I wouldn't recommend trying to read this on a Kindle, the font is so small I had to put it on almost the largest font just to make it readable, and even then the layout wasn't comfortable.

The book felt slow, right the way through to the last chapter when all the action happened. I almost didn't finish it.

It's a story about the grass on the other side not always being greener, and whilst there are some excellent bitchy comments in there I never really took to the lead character Lisa.

303pgs, contemporary, Lisa Doyle knows time is running out. She's in danger of becoming the sort of woman who talks to strangers on the bus, wears fur boots and collects cats. She's fast approaching 40 and, as her best friend Andy points out, single. But so is her best friend. Until one day, an invite arrives and Lisa makes the sort of split-second decision that can only lead to trouble. The Armchair Bride is funny, bittersweet and frequently downright dark.
