Tom, an aging music executive, retiree, and sailor meets Clare, a young, beautiful and somewhat mysterious woman on the quays of a Sicilian port. The two strangers share an unpredictable voyage around the Mediterranean Sea. As their voyage together takes its twists and turns, the destination turns out to be very different to what both of them expected, and will change both of their lives forever. This is no ordinary love story; it is more than that. It is about joy and pain; life and loss; who we are and what really matters to us.
An extraordinary book. I'm a sailor and read this as my wife and I were sailing around Ireland. I just finished it as we take a couple of days off in the Scilly Isles on our way back home. It struck home on so many levels, it even has a bit of useful sail trim information! I don't cry easily but this book had me in floods at times
I wanted to put this book down so many times, but the two characters kept me intrigued. Lots of information was lost on me with the sailing bits, some music bits and, what I assume, is Irish slang, but it never made me so frustrated that I got angry. I never got angry because the writing wasn't bad, it wasn't lazy, it was simply written in a way that wasn't entirely for me. But the stories were. The pain was. It's for everyone.
The ending blew this book out of the water. Very well worth the read.
Loved the story. The images so clear I felt I was on the boat too or wherever The characters stopped off. The love between Clare and Tom I will remember for a long time.
