George III described Sheffield as a 'damned bad place' at a time when the town was notorious for radical agitation. This book traces this radical tradition right up to the 1980s, when David Blunkett's Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire fought Mrs Thatcher.
David Price was born in Nottingham, England in 1955. His book Cancan! was originally published in hardback in 1998, and the revised and updated paperback version was published in November 2010. He has also written a number of magazine articles. He currently lives with his family in Northamptonshire, England.
I mean, I may be biased because the city and subject are so dear to my heart, but this book is fabulous. Yes, the author has to be a little selective about what they put in, and so some specific characters and episodes are foregrounded, while others (like the Unemployed Workers Marches of the 20th Century and the resulting police brutality) are left out.
And the pace is fast - we rattle through a lot of topics in a way that made this book very easy to put down, leave for a bit, come back to. But at least everything was thoroughly cited, giving the eager reader hints as to where to go for more if, for example, they suddenly found themselves desperate for more Edward Carpenter in their life. (And who isn't?)
Layout was great. The amount of research and care that's gone into this is fabulous. I wish there was one for every city. This is going to be one I dip back into with relish over the years.
