Out Like a Goddess: A Paranormal Cozy Mystery

Rate this book
They say she’s a goddess, but she definitely doesn’t act like one.

Evangeline Lewis thinks the gods must be crazy. First, they say she’s a goddess, and now they’ve given her a job that almost no one can fix whatever the gods of Olympus break.
Soon, Eva takes her first official client and discovers that someone is kidnapping gods…and no one on Olympus cares. Her investigation leads her deep into the inner workings of Olympus, and the gods that call it home. With visions of what’s to come, Eva finds herself in a race against time to find and confront the force behind the vanishing gods.
With every disappearance, the stakes only get more dire. When Eva's visions finally reveal the culprit, she’s left with a difficult embrace her true nature as a goddess and all the pain that comes with it…or leave Olympus to face total, irreparable destruction.

What a fantastically wonderful cozy mystery! Sometimes I just need an easy reading, but interesting book to give me a break from the stresses of life. This one definitely meets those needs. As Eva struggles to find answers to her own life questions she is pulled into a world she doesn't quite understand with people she barely knows and she isn't sure trust her, yet it is Eva who must come to the rescue and save them before its too late. As she unravels the mystery set before her she opens as many questions as she answers. Who can help Eva? Can she succeed in this new world she's been thrust into? Will she ever understand who she is and where she came from?

"Out Like A Goddess: A Paranormal Cozy Mystery (Surprise Goddess Cozy Mystery Book 1)" by A. M. Canavan/April Canavan wasn't what I was looking for when I found it but I'm glad I gave it a read. I was looking for a Three Kings Day themed cozy mystery. This is a cozy fantasy mystery about a 25 year old who finds out she's actually a reincarnated goddess (when a god/goddess does somehow die they reincarnate) and gets employed by the Three Kings Company.

Evangeline (Eva) has oddly prophetic dreams that always come with a price if acted on. Meteors fall from the sky when she cries. She doesn't know who her parents are. Oh, it's her birthday, she just lost her job, and received the deed to a home in Surprise, Arizona all in the same day

Once in her new home with a crew of boisterous hotties, she learns she is the reincarnation of a goddess and she's now to help other gods interact with the human world. Her first assignment is helping Aphrodite's son, Leo, convincing mom he can do cosmetology school. There's something more sinister going on and Leo's girlfriend disappears.

She's popping up in Eva's dreams though. Eva quickly wins over the other gods while also annoying them. Eventually some help her in tracking down the missing woman and solving a little of why gods are going missing. The end came a bit abruptly though and finished with only a little bit of the mystery solved.

When Eva comes of age, she receives notification that she is a Goddess - and given a job at Three Kings in Surprise. Her first job is to get Leo, son of Aphrodite into Cosmetic school - and he tells her that some Gods are vanishing - kidnapped. Will she be able to find Ataro? And will she be able to discover who is causing the problems? I loved this story and cant wait to read more!~ !

Fantastic read!

I’m loving this newly discovered series! Love reading about Greek gods and mythology set in the modern day. A very riveting read that kept me turning the pages and the plot kept me guessing right to the end. I can’t wait to start the next book!

Infectious adventure read

This wasn't my normal choice of story but it is well written with a lightness and quick wit. The gods got a little confusing but as the plot developed it soon fell into place. It kept me entertained and turning pages! Looking at the next in the series to be my next read!

A Breath of Fresh Air

This story was funny and exciting. I loved the world of the gods immersed in the modern day and the characters introduced. The mystery and plot jumped around a little bit as if Canavan knew where point B was but wasn't quite sure how to get there, but overall I still enjoyed the story.

Oh, my gosh! What a fun ride! I'm a huge fan of both cozy mysteries and books that use ancient mythology. I don't think I've ever seen the two combined before. In this book, Eva—who has lived a life as a normal human (though some of her “abilities” are definitely NOT human)—finds out that she is a goddess, and subsequently moves to a town that is essentially a new Olympus in modern times. She at first starts working helping out the other deities of Olympus. But when the Sphinx goes missing, it is revealed that other disappearances have happened as well. Eva wants to get to the bottom of it all. The secondary characters of the gods and goddesses in this community were a pure delight; they exhibited aspects you would expect if you know your Greek mythology, but there were some surprising moments as well. Sometimes, this book is quite humorous. If you enjoy paranormal/supernatural cozies or new takes on ancient deities, you might find this delightful little cozy right up your alley.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

cozy mystery for sure!

this is a cute mystery slice of life kinda series! a human who isn’t a god yet but is helping out the gods and goddesses how to live among the mortals. easy breezy right?! Not when you have dreams that are the future. Someone is hurting and hunting gods and Eve gets to see it on her dreams. Creepy and dangerous! So with the help of her new friends who are also gods (kai, leo & Eris ) she decides to do something about it. Things are slowly unraveling for Eve and new friendships are made. Cant wait for the next book! The romance is just starting to blossom💙

Okay, I'm in for the long haul. I was hooked at the prequel, but this one just set the hook. I so need to dust off my mythology books because I was just like Eva trying to remember who was who and related to who. I read this in one sitting as was so wrapped up in the out come that it was almost depressing when it ended. I needed Eve's little bubble so I could stay cocooned in my own little world watching the Gods roll by. Excellent work and I look forward to the next in the series. YAY!

This is Ms. Canavan’s first foray into the PNR cozy mystery genre and I was hooked!! Evangeline Lewis has discovered a few things about herself recently, the first being that she is a goddess. Not what we call a goddess today, but a flesh and blood Greek goddess. You know, related to Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Athena, et al, and she’s recently moved into a home she inherited from her mother. She’s got a job helping the gods with any problems they might have, from picking them up at the local jail to helping them to get into cosmetology school, nothing’s to small for Eva. That is until one of her prophetic dreams comes true and the sphinx is kidnapped while at work. Eva finds out that other gods are being kidnapped as well and she’s bound and determined to get to the bottom of the situation and save the sphinx.
There is a great cast of characters, my favorites being Persephone and Hades with their prank war, and Eris. The writing is clever, making the book an easy and entertaining read while at the same time making it easy to visualize what’s going on. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series, I need to know what happens next.

**I received an ARC of this from the author and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Eva recently discovered that she was not just an ordinary orphan - she came into her powers as a goddess at age 25.

except, ever since she was a little girl, she has had some sort of prophetic dreams, and bad things happened to her when she tried to prevent them from coming true. And every time she cried, there were meteor showers.

But she was afraid that her dreams made her some kind of freak, and would make her more of an outcast, even among the gods.

As she beings to make friends, and learn her job as a liaison to the gods with the company Three Kings, she learns that she is really considered an unwelcome outsider by many of the gods - and a rescuer and friend to others.

She must have faith in her abilities, and trust herself and at least some of those near her to do her job - but oh there is a great risk of harm to more than just herself.

A feisty fireball with more talent and fire than she or most others give her credit for!

Awesome read!

… I just wrote a detailed review and then my phone closed and deleted it, so this is the short version.

I liked reading this and think the concept is relatively unique with Greek God mortal reincarnations (and it’s free from Apple Books!), however I have some glaring issues with it.

1. Major red flags from love interests were treated as normal and okay. They are NOT. I didn’t expect them to slide with an I-won’t-take-any-shit protagonist, but they did.
2. The world and background character dynamics weren’t fleshed out as much as I would’ve liked. I would love to know more about the system of reincarnation and how it travels with lineages/genetics. Alas I will never know.
3. Eva, our protagonist, is two dimensional. We know some things about her but core values of motivations are lacking. She seems like she could float away and disappear at any time.

Cozy mystery isn't the genre for me. This felt like a CW show in book format.

This should have been a DNF @ 25-30% but I was curious about the super highly rated reviews and I hoped the story needed time to develop. I skimmed the last 40-45% of the book and didn't feel like I missed much. It was a short book with an accessible writing style but it felt repetitive, while nothing really happened.

MC leans very heavily on the clueless 'chosen one' trope for me. Also too much 'i'm not like other girls'.

What a fun little book! Gods, magic & mystery! This book really allows you to escape. It is new, exciting, cute, full of beautiful Goddesses and sexy Gods, sass, strength, the building of friendships, a mysterious disappearance and an ancient immortal tortoise!

Eva was brought up as a human unaware that Gods live among us. She is brand new to the world of the gods, magic and even Surprise. She just started a new job as the liaison to the human world & way of life, whatever that is and her first case leads her deep in to a mystery no one seems to even care about. Overcoming her fears she trudges in way over her head and the story that unfolds is a very enjoyable read!

I DNF this book… I read the prequel a few years ago and I remembered liking it but now attempting to read the first book was very hard. The writing is so bad that it does not compensate for the brilliant idea behind this series.

The idea of the book/storyline is really good and that is why I wanted to revisit this series. But the execution is bad. I know that writing is hard, I can’t write for shit but this is one of the worse writing I read in a long time.

I do think there is potential and if this series would be re-worked I’ll probably give it another go.

So freaking obsessed with this book! The story pulls you in immediately and keeps you wanting more and more so it makes it difficult to stop. I appreciate all the research that was done to be able to twist and make mythologY modernized. I love cozy mysteries so much and am so glad to have found another awesome series by April Canavan. This is a fun and quick read that has awakened my interest in mythology.

DNF at 60%: the writing in this book is atrocious. At one point, I started to unintentionally count the word “just” because it showed up in nearly every paragraph. The pacing is off, and the characters are dull. And dude, we get it, you like the show Supernatural. I don’t need to hear about it that much. Cheugy

A super fun cosy mystery story with a mythological twist!

I thoroughly enjoyed following Eva as attempts to work out her new role as a goddess in the mortal world, her place as a newbie goddess in the Olympian circle, and solve the mystery of the missing gods.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

(Re-added under correct book)

DNF as of page 234

I read the prequel, then this book back to back (the prequel is also the start of this book, I don't know if it's identical I skipped it.)

Interesting idea, shame about the execution.

Pausing to type, so you know it's not going well.

World-building:
IMHO didn't make sense.

Time skips:
For some reason the author jumps forwards a few days, then almost month and we don't get to see MC really discovering her new reality. Sometimes skipping time makes sense, but not in all cases and for me this was one. I was 'wait, what she's been there less than a month?' What happened in that time! She's in a town with gods etc., what does that look like!

Characters:
[] I wanted to like the MC, but just didn't as soon as the Love Interest turned up and from her meeting the other gods etc. She just became too much of a trusting idiot for me.

[] I did not like the love interest, which is always the death knell for any book for me even if the above issues were not in the book.
[] I didn't like the love interest's friends
[] I didn't really care for any of the characters, except Leo, he seemed nice.

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: No

Would you recommend?: No

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Out Like a Goddess is the first book in the Surprise Goddess Cozy Mystery series. On Eva’s 25th birthday, she receives a mysterious package and she knows her whole life is about to change. Eva is shocked when she’s told that she’s a goddess, but can she find a place for her in this new world she’s been thrust into?

Oh my goodness, I knew this would be a fantastic book, simply because I love the author, but I didn’t expect to be captivated and completely fall in love with all of these characters! Eva was a breath of fresh air! She was honest and true, and I loved that she grew up in the human world and had to acclimate to the world of the gods, while they needed her help within the human world. I loved that she wouldn’t give up, and once she saw a need, she tried to help in any way that she could, regardless of consequences that she might face. I liked that she was able to find people to trust with her secrets and to have her back, and I liked that she stuck up for people she hadn’t even met yet. I loved Eva, but I also loved all of the side characters that we meet. I don’t want to give anything away, but this book was so good! I loved the journey that Eva started within these pages, and I seriously want more of this series! Eva as goddess for the win!

This was a refreshing change from what I have been reading lately. Eva has all her life would have visions of someone in need and every time she's helped someone something drastic would happen to her. This last turn of events she ended up with a broken phone and she lost her job. Then she gets a letter saying someone left her a house in Surprise, Arizona and she decides to pack up and move. I have read other books from this author under her other name April Canavan and loved them. This is more of a paranormal series and this was a great start love the storyline Eva moved to another state and finds out she is a Goddess and once reincarnated gods and goddesses turn 25 they start to get their powers and memories back. She is hoping to find out who her parents are. She is hired to help paranormal beings with whatever they need since she can transition into both realms. First thing I loved is I just recently moved to Surprise so bonus points for that lol. I found it entertaining to read how some of these Greek Gods and Goddesses behaved. Plus there is the possibility of there being right now at least two love interests. Look forward to reading more of this series.

Eva considers herself a normal girl, though prone to being a klutz sometimes but has dreams which are telling her of things that are occurring now to others that she needs to help if at all possible. After going out most of the day to find and rescue a stranded girl, she returns to her job only to find she has been fired for not telling them where she was. However, her life is about to be changed as she receives a package with a key telling her she has a house waiting for her in Arizona. She packs up and moves
and finds more startling news that she isn’t a normal girl after all but a missing goddess from Olympus!
She makes friends and is given the job of helping other gods and goddesses cope in the human world without using their powers as well as finding some who have disappeared!

This was a fun book to read and I recommend it and the rest of the books in the series to you as ones you’ll enjoy. How cool would it be to find out you not only have a nice house and a new job that you love but also that you’re a goddess!

Eva is a girl you’ll want to read more of so pick up her complete series and settle back and enjoy a fresh series unlike any you’ve read before!

A rising star

Terrific read. A great plot filled with characters that are memorable and enticing whilst at the same time almost childlike in their exuberance and belief that they are always right. Our heroine blows in like a breath of fresh air to shake up their beliefs and attitudes whilst trying to do what no-one else seems to want to do. Find the missing gods and goddesses that have been kidnapped and disappeared.
Her house is now full of the brothers that make up the North Winds business and Darwin, a tortoise, who knows a lot more than he's letting on. Her job seems to have evolved into not only helping the gods make their way into the real world but in shaking up the old. Her dreams have also gotten darker and she sees the next victim getting snatched. Can she get her away from the kidnapper? Why is the kidnapper so intent on finding the Timekeeper?
A wonderful mix of fast paced action, some humour and great take downs of the powerful
I wonder if she is related to Astraea.

Evangeline Lewis may be new to her Goddess-ness, but trying to keep the Olympians and their demi-cousins out of trouble and help fix their problems may be a power she regrets volunteering for.
Eva works for Three Kings and wants to help be their go between with the humans, but how much a girl can take, is dependent upon the sanity of her situation.
Eva is having visions again, and The Sphynx, Ataro, is the lead player in her latest vision.
The Sphynx goes missing, a new "client" needs a consultation on life, Eva is still living with 4 hot Gods of wind, one of whom she'd like to lick the sweat off his abs, a talking tortoise, and Eva has near misses with creepy mysterious men, oh did I mention the Gods, that always seem to want Eva to "fix' things?! Oh, and a Detective "McHottypants" is on the edge of Eva's radar.

What a fun twist on the gods/goddesses!

I love mythology tales, so I was excited to check out this series and was not disappointed. Our main character, Eva, steals the whole show with her caring for others, her fierceness when standing up for her friends, and her curiosity to find out who she really is. I like the friends she is gathering around her to lend humor and support. It’s neat to see the reincarnated deities figuring it out in a modern world. And the tortoise! I can’t wait to read Eva’s next adventure!
