Damaged #2

Defying Gravity

Rate this book
Special Agent Zeke Cabot and Anne Reynolds are both excited and a little wary as they take steps to commit to their budding relationship. But like the unpredictable weather in the mountains of New Mexico, their path to happiness is anything but smooth.

Zeke continues to struggle against debilitating bouts of PTSD and flashbacks. Anne still copes with the lingering pain from her divorce and if she's ready to take another chance on love, especially with a woman. A danger from a past case Zeke thought was closed threatens both their safety and the strength of their trust. But Zeke and Anne are determined to overcome their personal obstacles and learn to defy gravity enough to keep them grounded in love.

This is the second book in the Damaged in Service series. Ms Barrett has written another great book. This book is not just another romance. Zeke's struggles with PTSD, is very real, how this effects her new realationship with Anne is compeling. If your looking for new love and hot sex to cure all quickly in one book you wont find the cure to PTSD here. You'll get the hot sex and new love, but that's not what makes this to me a good book. the real story here is Zeks's struggle with PTSD. If you or someone you know is suffering with PTSD read this book, it will give you a better understanding of what PTSD is and the struggles to heal from the horrors that cause it.
Ms Barrett's back round as a nurse, gives her a real insite to the medical side of the subject. Ms battett knows of what she writes.
There will be no quick fix cure all. That's why this is a series. I was not ready for this book to end. I am so looking forward to more of Zeke and Anne's story.

Yeah... I really tried the second time around. The dialogue was still extremely cheesy to me. For an FBI agent, who's trained to keep their cool and all, Zeke's rather quick to pull her gun out where words and her badge would have sufficed, and then... times when she needs her gun, she can't pull it out. Then the whole thing with Anne's mother, with her saying, "how could she do this to me?" Dude, your mum was killed... I'm pretty sure it wasn't her choice to die.

I'm pissed 'cause I actually pre-ordered the third book 'cause I hate starting a book or a series without finishing it, but man... I got buyers remorse.

I really enjoyed the story of Zeke and Anne, the pace of their relationship makes it more believable in turn making them the couple you want to see succeed, both women have past histories they need to put in order, for the success to come about, I'm looking forward to sharing more of their story and watch their love unfold. Can't wait.

The first book ended with a cliff hanger that begged to be assuaged. So I got this book and I am still not assuaged😣arrg! Better lovey-dovey ending, more romance, more troubles, less suspense but really upsetting plot as I really can't believe one case is extending to a third book. And the lapses from Zeke like using her credit card when she earlier had been told a trace is on it....duh? I guess a noticeable improvement on Zeke's personality is that she is at least getting her balls (pun intended 🤣) back. In the first book, her character seemed emasculated, so kudos to her.

Special Agent Zeke Cabot is back. She has been spending time in new Mexico trying desperately to rid herself of the awful effects of PTSD. If Zeke can’t get over the trauma she’s suffered, it could well mean the end of her career and the end of her relationship with the beautiful and alluring Anne Reynolds.

Anne Reynolds is excited about her new relationship with Zeke. Zeke is the first woman Anne has ever been with. But Anne has some doubts of her own about their relationship.

Zeke has to return to Chicago in order to close the case she’s been working on. She can’t get Anne out of her mind and misses her badly.

Will Zeke be able to fight her demons in order to save herself, her job and her relationship? In fact, are either Zeke or Anne ready to trust again in order to pursue their fledgling relationship?

Zeke has limited time left of her sick leave to sort through what she is able and ready to do. Will she be ready to move on?

Will Anne be able to cope with Zeke’s flashbacks and trauma? Can Anne let go of the fact that she is a medical professional and just be there to support Zeke as her lover?

This book was much awaited after the cliff-hanger in book one of the Damaged Series.

Barrett has done an excellent job of writing about the effects of PTSD and the consequences for not only the sufferer, but their loved ones and friends. I’ve seen first hand the aftermath of an event triggering PTSD and in my opinion, Barrett has accurately portrayed it.

The romance between Zeke and Anne was well written and paced out nicely. Not too fast or too slow. They are suited to one another.

I loved the scenic descriptions, it’s made me want to visit New Mexico. A great enhancement to the book.

However, the actual story involving the perpetrators from book one barely progressed at all. Let alone becoming any where near to being resolved. I realize we have more books to come in the series, so maybe I’m just being impatient.
I’ll wait impatiently now for book three.

With "stuff" to deal with, it is nice to have someone to lean on and provide support. Anne and Zeke are really good for each other. Look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Story didn't flow as well in this book. Storyline felt redundant. That said I enjoy the characters and can't wait for the next one in the series.
