Kristoffer Snider is an unlikely hero: an outcast musical prodigy. But when an evil force captures the power of music to rule the world, only Kristoffer can save the day. By turns heart-pounding and heart-warming, The Last Musician is an adventure with heart - and a song.
I was born and raised in Chicago, IL (and later the south suburbs of the city), where I grew up loving books and music and especially books about music. After college, I taught high school English before leaving the States for New Zealand on a working holiday that was more holiday than working, and I relocated to Nashville, TN when I returned.
I played in bands throughout high school and college and while in grad school in Nashville, and I continued writing, eventually landing a stint as a contributing writer for The Onion News Network. I've worked in writing and research fields since then.
I enjoy traveling and staying put with my soon-to-be wife, and I still love books and music and especially books about music. I'm excited about my first novel, and I'm currently working on the next thing.
I felt priviledged to receive a reviewer copy of this book.
The whole story teeters on becoming a niche classic fantasy with memorable characters, unique settings, and a shadow that lurks just behind the words that keep you wondering when the whole thing is going to spiral into a much darker experience.
If you want a quick, light, and enjoyable read then this is your book, if you are hoping for a deeper experience based upon a premise that has so much promise than you might be slightly disappointed as we never quite get there.
At times it felt as if the author got lost as to who his intended audience is. It also seemed as if alot was left on the cutting room floor.
In closing, I recommend this book as long as the reader realizes that for its problems there is a good nugget of a story in there.
I got something very different from what I expected, and the problem is the books voice. It sounds like a young narrator is telling us a story (I'd say the voice is suitable for upper middle grade) but the story told and the themes addressed are aimed at a much higher reading age. This discrepancy left me unfulfilled.
Aside from that, they story was quite interesting with several good twists. It was well written and easy to read and understand. I just think it was lacking the voice I had expected. With a title like this, there should have been more music to the words and that spark was simply missing.
