Above a war torn battlefield on a distant world, Ko'tan Kadai and his Salamanders are on a mission of mercy. As the city burns, the Fireborn rescue a band of beleaguered civilians and learns what it means to be Vulkan's Shield.
On the whole it's quite a good audio drama. The music and sound effects are good and so are the actors. the only down side is that you need to read other novels to understand it. And the other parts (except for Fireborn) haven't been recorded as audio dramas, so far.
Vulkan's Shield shows the Salamaders' doing their thing! The Salamander's are certainly the more humanitarian of the Space Marines! We get a great insight into how their chapter works and the lengths that they are willing to go to rescue civilians! This makes for a great edge of the seat heroic story that never lets up fromt the start!
Vulkan's Shield itself is epc from the start with the characters in the thick of things! The story engages in epic world building! Ko'tan Kadai and his Salamanders really have their back to it but it provides a neat contrast of priiorities to other units who may be more inclined not to prioritise the human civilians! This makes for a tale that is heroic from the beginning!
The charcters throughout are put through the wringer by Kyme! The charactes though themselves all come across as three-dimensional with their own ideas and motivations and agendas! The open nature of how the Salamanders work and operate as a team! The presentation is also brilliant with it really taking you into the story! Giving you a really there sense of being there! The production values are brilliant and the story plays perfectly on any player!
Vulkan's Shield is epic from the beginning! You will not be pausing in this! Vulkan's Shield is full of daring do, aorld building, epic adventure and action! Crisp High Five! Brilliant and Highly Recommended! Get it When You Can! :D Brilliant in Everyway! :D
I've not read any other Salamander stories and don't know the chapter well, so I don't know if the name dropped in the story is significant, but the name is the one issue that I have with it. The rest of the story is awesome as it shows Salamander rituals and other chapter's responses to them, but it ends with the is name. It took a half dozen listens to hear it as a name and not have it sound like a location. Perhaps they needed a different actor or needed to lower the sound effects, but for whatever reason, I could just not hear the name as a name.
