Another murder rocks the small Welsh town of Gilfach – the police are baffled, the corpse is getting colder and only Granny Smith, the intrepid pensioner sleuth stands between justice and all out anarchy.
Granny has a talent for mayhem and soon those talents are put to good use as our intrepid pensioner starts to unravel the case, which finds her provoking Chief Inspector Miskin as she comes up against a full scale police investigation, proving that you’re never too old to make a nuisance of yourself and that seventy-one is actually the new twenty-one.
Murder’s never been so much fun.
What others are saying about Granny Smith " I liked the story, entertaining, easy to read."
“Imagine a seventy year old James Bond but with tits and you pretty much have Granny Smith.”
"Laugh out loud funny and Granny Smith is a wonderful invention"
"Granny Smith complete with pipe , what a vision... proves where there is a way she will take try it...enjoyed this book easy reading ."
“Does for South Wales what Hitler did for Poland.”
Pipe smoking, headbanging Granny Smith is a kindred spirit to this reader. While she has a few years on me, I too still love all things metal and, while I don't smoke, i once had a brief relationship with a pipe for a time. The old girl has a cat named Lemmy(mine was named Puss Cooper) and doesn't dress like a person of her years. Same here.
The murder victim is a member of Granny's protest group demonstrating against a developer's intent to wipe out a small pond that is the spawning ground for a rare species of frog on the endangered list.
In her look into the murder, she found the body naturally, Granny discovers ties to most members, the developer as well, a number of motives among them all, and continues to plow along amid threats from the police to stop. What self-respecting amateur detective could do less?
Writer Gary Dobbs has created a modern day cozy series that can stand alongside some of those series by British Isles authors that I devoured in my early years. He has a great mystery here and brings that style of cozy forward into the twenty-first century, touching on modern subjects that would have been tolerated back then, Hell, not even thought of back then.
In Granny Smith and the Deadly Frogs by G.M. Dobbs, septuagenarian Mary Smith, known to all as Granny Smith, gets involved in protesting a development in her small Welsh town. A fellow protester, Mansel, believes that the pond where the development is scheduled to take place contains endangered lesser crested frogs, so he calls in an expert, who determines that the frogs are common frogs and not the endangered ones. Upon learning this fact, Granny goes to the pond to remove the flyers about the frogs, only to discover the body of Carol Hamish, a fellow protester, floating dead with her eyes open in the pond. Granny finds the prospect of getting involved in another murder case stimulating and determines to get to the bottom of the case.

Disclaimer. I had requested and received audible version of this book for free from the narrator, in exchange for an unbiased review.
What I liked about the book - This is mostly a cozy mystery with an old lady as the relentless detective solving the crime. That itself is a adorable premise that draws me to this series. The case in this second installment is somewhat far fetched and little bit muddled by side-tracks, and yet, it is enjoyable at the end of the day. The whodunit mystery keeps driving the story ahead and takes it to its satisfying end. You are welcome to guess the culprit in the meantime, and your guess will probably be right. But that doesn't take away from the entertainment value of the story as a whole.
What I disliked about the book - The story gets sidetracked from time to time.
Narration - Narration by Fiona Thraille was a good match for the content. Her delivery made this book very entertaining indeed.
I was gifted this audio book with the understanding that I would leave an honest review. Well honestly I don't see the attraction to this book. With all the 4 and 5 star reviews and the fact that it was mentioned as being like Miss Marple I thought I would love it. Not! I did enjoy the narration by Fiona Thralle I thought she did a wonderful job of reading this story just wish I had enjoyed the story. This is the first Granny Smith book I have read. I seem to be the minority so give the book a chance and make up your own mind.
Granny Smith gets involved in another police investigation when a member of their environmental group gets murdered. As usual the police chief warns Granny to not get involved in the investigation or get locked up. And he has Granny's nephew keep an eye on her. A lot of good that does. Decent story.
Granny strikes again - are the bad guys ready for her
Stunning! Granny is back with a vengeance. Another murder and she is set on solving it. Can she do so without upsetting the police too badly? She is simply a terrific character who isn't afraid of being herself. Regardless of whether it is politically correct to do so. A wonderful humorous read.
The second book starring miss maple on steroids - the welsh granny with determination to solve the murder that dared to take place in her town. Again I struggled with some bits which were probably a bit too real by loved the setting and the people. Glad that the homosexual relationships were dealt with in a pretty realistic way - those of the older generation having a shock but getting on with life because it doesn't matter who your kids love, they're your kids!
I do hope many of you will try the new book, Granny Smith and the Deadly Frogs. I think this one builds upon the world created in Granny Smith Investigates. I plan to get another Granny Smith adventure out before the end of the year and with your help I can grow the series
Once again the pipe-smoking granny is on a search for the truth after a 'Save our frogs' activist is found very dead, and yet again she leaves no stone unturned, and of course upsets the local constabulary. A great fun read.
