This book is abridged from Robert Bain's "The Clans and Tartans of Scotland" and contains over 100 of Scotland's most famous clans providing details of their crests, mottoes and often turbulent history.

Also included are the correct tartans worn by the holder of a particular clan of a family name, a clan map of Scotland, and a helpful list of sources for those wishing to pursue their clan or family history further.

I liked the color prints of the tartans, the map in the covers showing the primary locations of each clan, the brief history, as well as the notable members of the clans. I would have liked the shields and crest to be in color. I was quite pleased when I figured out which clan the cover tartan is.

Starts with a brief and easy to understand and interesting introduction into the Scottish clan system and how it formed, developed and came to an end. And a short paragraph detailing how to correctly wear a kilt. Each individual clan has its origins outlined and minor details of key clan members and incidents given. At the back key times in Scottish history are listed, personal names in their Gaelic form provided as well as a Gaelic glossary and details for further reading into tartans and family history.

A great wee book that does what it says and beautifully bound in a tartan cover. Ideal for quick and easy learning into the clans of Scotland.

My grandfather James McVan came here in 1893 with his brother Michael. I am of mixed
ancestry, but pray one day to know the McVan
clan before I die. They were from Labireshire (sp) Scotland with John and Mary being the parents of five boys in the 1870's. nice1024805@aol.com
