Rokka no Yuusha volume #2 review

I have to say, that this one turned out to be my favorite book in the series so far. Once again, I was surprised, with so many betrayals happening and plot twists which were great.

This is also the book where you realize that this generation of heroes is screwed. Enemy finally started thinking of better attack plans, using emotions and bonds. Fiends lost in the previous 2 battles with the heroes of six flowers, but this time, they are making sure to destroy them in every ways possible, especially using mind games and creating a secret weapon that could destroy them all.

STORY :

Of course, this section contains spoilers for #1 and #2 book, so be careful if you haven't read them.

Nashetania appears in front of everyone, taunting them, only to activate the blades jewel she put into Chamo when they met before the awakening of Evil God, thus slowly killing her. If Nashetania doesn't get out of 1km radius, Chamo will die in three hours and there will be only 6 heroes left. Once again, the heroes are thrown into chaos, and to make things worse, Goldof sudenly declares "I must save the princess." Now, the heroes don't know if he is the real Seventh, or if he is acting out of love he feels for Nashetania... And time is once again, running out. In three hours they have to find Goldof and understand if he is their enemy; either kill or capture Nashetia in order to save Chamo and face the threats of Tgurneu. The book is split into two parts - heroes POV, first part of the book, and second part is from Goldof's point of view.

CHARACTERS :

This section also contains spoilers #1 and #2 book, so be careful. There are also slight spoilers included, so skip if you are person who dislikes slight spoilers...

This time, central character is Goldof. Having suffered extreme betrayal, he is conflicted between his loyalty and love for Nashetania, and his duty as six flowers hero. Most of the book -actually half of it- will be from his POV, where the reader will find out more about his past, how he became commander at such a young age, and most of all, what led to Nashetania and Goldof meeting. On the other hand, Nashetania is once again cruel and manipulative woman, who will stop at nothing but achieving her goals.

Once again, we are introduced to a new character, Dozzu, who is the traitor commandant of demons. He works with Nashetania in order to change the world. Meanwhile, Adlet and Fremy started developing feelings with each other, with Fremy denying the feeling of love.

OVERALL :

Another fantastic addition to the series i came to love very much. This book was the biggest emotional ride out of all, and because of that i enjoyed it more than the other books.

I've said it every single time, and I'll say it again....I freaking love this series! The colour pages are forever gorgeous and the plot is intricate and draws you in. Each character is slowly being unravelled as we get to know more and more about them see their view points.

The prologue is super creepy, and the volume as a whole has a nice fast pace. We switch between the Braves and Nashetania and Tgurneu with a bit of Goldof. This volume really lets us get to know Goldof, he's been somewhat mysterious and quiet up to this point, but this is the volume that pulls his mask away as it where and we get to see his background and his relationship with Nashetania.

Goldof literally goes over the edge this volume, and is the biggest pain in the ass....or so it seems for most of the volume. Towards the end we get thrown in a complete 180 when it comes to him when we finally see his view point and understand him and his motivations. Which is one thing I love about this series, nothing is what it seems, and neither are the characters. There's always more going on under the surface and it's hard to tell what's what. It keeps you on your toes.

Chamo I'm finally starting to warm up to, and I really liked her this volume. I like her more and more the more of her I see and the other sides of her we get to see. Despite one of them being a traitor, they all work well together as a team. I still can't quite pin point who the traitor might be. Like I genuinely have no clue and it's driving me mad! I'm just hoping it isn't either of my two favourites! Well...that's a lie. The only two characters we haven't explored in depth is Hans and Chamo....so it must be one of the two of them...but then I wouldn't put it past the author to have it be Adlet or one of the others that we've already gotten to know the background of...okay yeah. I wasn't lying...I really do have no clue!

This volume has plenty of action as is usual, as we face off with Nashetania and Dozzu in a race to save Chamo. Plus there's the mystery element to it, courtesy of the traitor in general and Goldof in this volume, AND we have multiple plot threads to untangle, that all weave together to create the plot. Both the plot just for this volume and for the story as a whole.

The plot moves forward, there's more plot threads unravelled and mysteries explained...but there's more mysteries and new plot threads are added to carry over to the next volume, as well as making the overall plot more intricate. I'm loving how the plot is fleshed out more and more, with more little things added. As well as the characters who get more and more fleshed out as the volumes progress. I'm hoping one of the next volumes will reveal more about Hans and Camo! Trying to work out who to trust leaves you on edge somewhat and there's a bomb about to be dropped at the end of this volume...so I'm kind of in suspense for volume 4!

Wow, this was a crazy ride. The author does such a good job portraying the anxiety of not knowing who to trust and while I wanted to yell at the characters for not figuring out what was going on I didn’t figure it out either.

The first half of this vol follows Adlet and co as they try to figure out what’s going on, the second half follows Godolf filling in the information Adlet and co don’t have. I really respect Godolf, he’s one of a kind and his loyalty is scary but touching at the same time.

Final Thoughts: The author really knows how to think things through, it’s what makes each vol frustrating and interesting. I’m looking forward to what truth will be revealed next vol.

While I ended up liking it overall, I had a hard time getting into this book. I can admit is may be that I didn't ever read it for long periods of time. Though when I have 45 minutes or so on a lunch break I can usually make a solid dent... alas, I kept falling asleep (many days, many times) which doesn't seem to bode well for how I like a book.

If you like Goldof you'll probably like this one somewhat, and it was more interesting than the book started out. Alas, as mentioned I kept dozing off. He's never been that interesting to me (though this book does make him a better character).

We still don't know who the 7th is (or the second seventh). But honestly that was okay. At least we didn't spend an entire book ferreting them out just to have another one show up.

Anyhow-- I really liked the concept when I heard it but just have not been able to really get in to it. The remaining 3 volumes are easily available for me to read so someday I'll get there, but I am not in a rush.

Verdict: If you're liking this series, you'll probably like this one. Sadly, the series just hasn't really done much for me.

I debated between giving this one a 3 or a 4 out of 5. The first hundred pages or so were really fast-paced and action packed, ramping up for what promised to be another exciting and mystery-filled volume. The next ~hundred pages or so, however, were a rehashing of the events from the previous hundred pages, primarily from Goldof's perspective, and as much as I enjoy seeing the flip side to any complex mystery, I think a bit too much time was spent on doing that. There was too much repetition in this volume compared to the previous two and I wasn't as taken with the "reveal" this time around, primarily because of how much back and forth misinformation and plotting was going on between the different fiends as they practically tripped over each other to outdo the other's elaborate plot in tricking Adlet & Co. The last paragraph is what really made it worth it though, especially the last sentence, as it promises more complexity and mystery to come.

This is the worst volume so far. Not only it’s slow and we see the same events from 2 different view Reading everything twice. But also goldof is just hollow character. Nothing make sense of his personality and actions. Reading his past he’s just randomly the way he is and above all for some reason he doesn’t talk when wronged or never explain. + The most funny thing is. He just beat people then ask to be understood and to be cared for. Man you just beat anyone for no reason lol and never talk. How do you want to be loved and understood like that??

Every kyoma in this volume was just so random. There was better ways to involve them rather than just talking and then somehow is close to be killed.

This third volume of Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers was filled with twists and turns at every corner. The characters are faced with hopeless challenges all around, and it was exciting to see how they would all handle them. I especially enjoyed the attention given to the character who had gotten the least attention in the series so far. His backstory and thought process were fascinating, and he easily became one of my favorite characters through this novel. While the pacing of this book seemed inconsistent in some places, the plot kept me hooked, and as with the others before it, I'm left wanting to know more about the remaining questions and how everything will play out.

Rokka is still going really strong! The reason for losing a star is the writing itself. There are 2 parts where the second is a repetition of the first but from a different point of view. I get why it had to be written like that because otherwise the reader would get all the clues, but it became a bit boring!

The first book -> who’s the traitor
The second book -> why did you betray us
The third -> where is it hiding and how

The ending hints at some really interesting coming events... strongly recommend this series even to people that aren’t into Light Novels

This volume isn't as good as its predecessors but is still interesting the main reason for the 4 stars isn't the plot because Goldov's backstory is really gripping in my opinion, the thing that let me down a bit is the complexity of the story I'm not sure if this is because of the author's writing or the translation but it felt really off when reading and there are some plot twist which are a bit forced after that it isn't a bad volume

Again another solid addition to the series. This time the main focus was on Goldof and Dozzu’s faction. Adlet and the rest were secondary characters. If you liked the pervious books and mysteries you will like this book. My main complaint is that the author takes the easy route and beats the information into your head instead of integrating it in a more natural manner.

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers 3 is obviously the 3rd novel in the series surround the Six Braves and the two false Braves.  As the last book focused primary on the oldest member of the group, Mora, this one focuses on the quietest of the group, Goldof the Knight who had followed the Princess until it turned out that she was a fake Brave.

While this book focuses on Goldof and his relationship with the Princess, along with how he became known for his fighting prowess - Adlet and Flemy were wrong in the first book, both believing Goldof was a genius, here we learn that wasn't actually the truth.  The book had a lot more at stake, with Chamo being injured somehow by the Princess, the only way to save her life is to either make the Princess remove the curse that she had placed on the younger girl, or - as most of the Braves felt was more optimal - kill her and have the curse lifted that way.

It is about half way through the book that we learn more about Goldof, about his background and how he came to be part of the Princess' entourage of sorts.  His backstory is tragic, but not for the reasons you might think, he was never abused as a child but he had missed out on so much of an actual childhood, he never experiences things that most children experience because he was different from the other children, until he met her and then things began to change for him.

This is the book that also shows how much the Braves are willing to work together, even though there could be someone ready to stab them in the back at a moments notice, they are all willing to die for Chamo, they will do whatever it takes to make sure that she is healthy and okay.  As Hans said to Mora in the book:

"She is more strategically important than you."

This quote could also be taken as a threat, but consider what went on in the last book between these characters, it's clear that the pair are fully aware that Chamo is a powerful Saint, the only problem is she is in a sense still a child.  This is where she loosely links with Goldof - although it was never really put into that context, it is important to point it out - when Chamo became the Saint of the Swamp, she was feared and no one really cared too much for her, because it was out of fear that they were doing things for her.  Chamo herself was surprised at how hard people were fighting for her to try and save her, like with Hans fighting the fiends that surrounded herself and Mora, while the other's were out looking for the Princess and Goldof.

Out of the series so far, this was actually the first one that I managed to read in a day.  It was gripping, there was a lot going on but it was never overwhelming, and probably due to me knowing what was going to happen in book two - because it's my favourite character that was going to get badly hurt - I read it so slowly.

The series is definitely still on a high, it is written and translated a lot better than the last one, and if mystery, tension and fantasy is your thing, you should check this series out.

Rokka no Yuusha is intense, the mystery is getting thicker and the more Kyoma leaders getting explored the harder it is to pinpoint who the seventh is for some reason (for now it's either an unaware Adlet or Hans). Tgurneu is the type of villain I like to see, unbelievably smart, ruthless and toying with our heroes for the lolz. I definitely look forward to see what other schemes he will come up with. It was more of an emotional roller coaster than the second this time around with the betrayal and Goldof's thoughts but in the end I'm not 100% happy with this volume because of that.

Tbh I liked the second volume way more than this one because Mora is a much better character than Goldof to me, I know that his devotion and loyalty to the princess is admirable but it actually did nothing other than make me feel sorry for him and lament his lack of character. We saw him mope around in the second novel and in the first chapters of this novel before getting revived so to speak to save Nashetania, to me it seems like it's his sole reason for being in the story and it's kind of pathetic as well, given his backstory I can't really blame the devotion but he's regarded as a genius so shouldn't he use his brain more than his heart? The series isn't over yet so I'm hoping by the volumes to come he'll either get over his princess and starts being a real brave or die with her as a traitor. Adlet did confirm that sitting amongst them are three enemies excluding Tgurneu's seventh so we will see.

I'm not lowering my rating of the book though because it was an enjoyable read from start to finish, not as good as the second that's true but still more than enough entertainment in getting my mind blown away by the complex mystery and I don't do decimal ratings.

Como no podía ser de otro modo tratándose de Rokka no Yuusha, el misterio, la intriga y la acción vuelven a dominar la historia. Y no me veréis quejarme.
