Hack: Innings 4-6 picks up from the shocking cliffhanger of Innings 1-3. Is a man entitled to his secrets? Or will they slowly eat him away from the inside?
Where do I start? Born and raised in St. Louis, graduated from Dartmouth in 2005 and the University of Virginia School of Law in 2008. Practiced law until 2011, when I quit to pursue my dream of writing.
I caught on as the St. Louis Rams Reporter for insideSTL.com and did some radio work for 590 AM the Fan KFNS and 1380 AM the Fan 2. As soon as the (very trying for anyone following the Rams) 2011 NFL season ended, I started working on my novels. The insideSTL gig ended in June, and I focused all of my attention on starting up a small publisher (Orion's Comet).
Other interesting stuff about me: I've forgotten how to ride a bike. I once swam so much over the course of a summer that my hair became green. I'm always fighting a three-pronged war between a paleo lifestyle and my love of wine and ice cream. And my dog, Sully, looks like a big shih tzu--he's 33 pounds.

So, I really liked the first section, and I liked these next three chapters even more.
I hate to give away plot, but a quick vague summary. (SPOILERS) In this second section, Hack is softening. He is much less abrasive, and he starts to connect with people and feel good about himself again. There are actually some touching moments here. But I would say that most of the second section is really about the team - the building of the team itself, and the individual players finding their strengths. There are some good baseball moments here, and I think the writer does a good job making the games accessible even if you don't know much about baseball (like me).
I continue to be impressed with the writer. He takes twists and turns I'm not expecting, but he does it with such confidence I just followed along. He continues to portay the world of men and sports with a vivid and unflinching hand.
Another warning: If anything, this second section is even more foul-mouthed and uses evey more profane imagery than the first, so if you're not comfortable with that, please be aware of it.
But there's heart at the bottom of all of it, heart as Hack and the team members find themselves. I am definitely 'caught' and can't wait for the third installment to see how it all comes out!
Innings 1-3 thoroughly intrigued me and drew me in. Wow! What a rip-roaring start! But I wasn't quite sure what to make of the protagonist, Hack. I felt a desire to like him, but I wasn't entirely sure. Was he a protag who I'd merely love to hate? I *was* rooting for him, but almost in spite of myself.
Innings 4-6 changed that. Some of Hack's more desirable qualities became evident, along with the hint of a softer, more vulnerable side. My ambivalence switched to wholehearted partisanship: I cared about Hack and I wanted him to succeed.
Like Innings 1-3, Innings 4-6 is a rip-roaring read , exciting, engrossing, and with many surprise twists, I can't wait for Innings 7-9!
