These vampires don't sparkle. They hunt and kill, driven to evil by the raging darkness inside them. From the moment they feed on their first victim they are lost – but what if the darkness was destroyed before that happened? What would be left? Something not seen in thousands of years.
A chance encounter leaves Daniel in just that position. With no memories of who he once was, and powers he barely understands, can he survive in a world where all magical powers are viewed as a sign of darkness? Can he convince others that he is free from evil?
And is he? Has the darkness truly been purged from his soul? Or is it merely driven into hiding deep within, silenced for now but waiting to strike again?
No, this story is a book of survival, courage ,love, determination and the shared purpose of a few! Though blood and soul sucking entities exist in this tale they aren't your Transylvanian type characters. A wonderous tale to keep any fantasy lover happy. I received this ebook in exchange for honest review
Once again Simon has taken us on a journey of the extremes. A master weaver of tale leaves us with questions at the end of this book and no choice but to read the next of the series. But first you have to make it through all of the obstacles and twist of fate from the first book. I loved it all especially the Momma Bear fighting for her child which rage so true to life. Love it! Can't wait to find out what happens next!
One of those books that grips you from the start and holds your attention all the way through. I hadn't noted that it was "part one" so now I've finished it I've immediately bought part two as I want to know what happens to the characters whose story I've been following. A recommended read!
The rating is really an average of my score for the plot/ideas and the execution of it as I value the ideas and concepts higher than the actual writing. Still, it had some interesting points that made me curious and as someone not too fond of vampire stuff, this was a fairly new take on it for me.
However, it suffered from several things:
1. Over-exposition. The dialogues and explanations were excessive and often ended up repeating events only a few pages prior or the emotions already clearly portrayed. A lot of the descriptions of emotions and thoughts in particular could have been omitted and described in few words without spelling it out to the reader.
2. Convenient scenes and events. There were just a few too many scenes that seemed too convenient for the main reason of: time. They happened too quickly to seem convincing, and even when they were longer, they often contained a very long re-telling of story we already knew from earlier. Some of them would have been convincing, had they been done differently and with more care and time.
3. Somewhat flat side-characters. Some of them have clear personality traits, others are vastly more flat and generic. Even the main character sometimes lack personality, but an argument can be made that it has to do with what he's been through, his background.
Completely not what I expected and I loved it. It was so perfectly right for a vampire book with its medieval setting and superstition. In a world where magic seems to abound there is no answer for it but heresy and there lies the problem. Is all magic evil? It is a fantastic and fascinating world that Simon Goodson has created. I can't wait for book 2 and the next books in the works now. I am just sorry it took me so long to get around to reading it because this is the type of book that is right up my alley.
This is an interesting book set sometime in the distant past about a man who somehow survives being attacked by a vicious vampire, without becoming one himself. Instead, he gains some amazing powers and abilities although he loses most of his memory. His survival and transformation seem linked to his willingness to suffer an excruciatingly painful death rather than succumb to the bloodlust of preying on human victims, drinking their blood, draining their essence. We get to see and hear about a lot of vampires who do exactly that but we only really get to know one, Rafael, the vampire who attacked Daniel.
While I enjoyed the story it would have been better had more explanations been provided for many of the murky and mysterious aspects in this book. Details are not provided, either about the characters or the places or the powers and abilities, both those of the “good” guys (Daniel, Jon and the little girl Mary) or those of the bad guys (Rafael and his many vampire followers). Jon in particular goes from not realizing he has any abilities for much of his life to suddenly understanding all about them, with very little learning curve. Huh? Likewise, Daniel manages to master many of his abilities, also with very little learning curve.
There’s a great deal being said about good and evil with members from an Order insisting anyone using magic or special powers is evil, which they can somehow determine using their own magical devices. Huh? Even the good guys aren’t really certain, at first, whether they’re tainted by evil or can really use energy for good. Jon’s wife Sarah and one of the Order’s leaders, Josef, are gradually won over and accept there may be some grey areas, rather than pure black and white the way it’s always been. While this is okay, it just seemed all a bit too simplistic.
There’s action and adventure but without a better insight concerning the “why” and the “how” for all that happens, this just didn’t work for me. I couldn’t really understand the people, places and things, the motivations at times were too unrealistic and the story simply didn’t resonate in ways to make me care. So, a good read but not a great read. I give it three and a half stars.
Simon Goodson is great at developing his characters and suspense. This novel was an excellent read from the first page to the last. He takes the reader into an in-depth look at the life of vampires and the control of dark forces while developing the powers of goodness in a few of his characters. Daniel is the lead character and quickly becomes a favorite while reading. His inner strength and determination motivate him to fulfill his obligations of tracking down a young girl kidnapped by a ruthless vampire and also ridding his world of those possessed by darkness. I found this to be an exceptional read, different from any other book I read this year. If you enjoy paranormal/fantasy/vampires you'll love this book. I know I do.
3.5/5 Stars This is your typical good vs. evil story - you'll get a main character new to his own power, a group of overzealous devouts seeking to wipe out magic, vampires who both embrace and step away from the stereotype, and a struggling family caught up in the middle of it all.
Fantasy fans who are skeptical about vampires should give this one a read. The author presents an interesting world full of magic and demons, those who are against the magic, and those who fear it. I enjoyed the journey that the characters took through this world, and would definitely read more of this author's work to see where else he can send me.
I think the story is set in Medieval times, from the description of the common folk and the dwellings they are living in. A time when magic, of all kinds, is feared and believed "evil." There are Vampires, and a "holy order" of men who hunt them down, and hunt down anyone who appears to have any knowledge of magic, whether good or bad. Our hero is attacked by a Vampire, but during the process of turning, something happens and he "becomes" something else, something "more." What I have no idea.........I must read the second volume to discover that. Well written and engaging to read. I just wish I knew what the hero had become.
This was a very different type of "vampire novel"...in a good way. It wastes no time intriguing you, and I didn't want to stop reading once I started. Full of adventure and action with strong characters highlighted by a man's struggle to cling to his humanity while his biology is trying to drag him another direction. My main complaint though is that there was a lot of telling with out much showing. "He was scared" is a given...make me FEEL his fear.
Over all, a great read and a break from what the "fantasy" genre has become as of late.
I read parts 1 and 2 back to back and thoroughly enjoyed them both. It was an interesting twist on vampires, and more. There's plenty of room for more story left in the series, and I will be anxiously awaiting further books...
In a World where magic is forbidden you really don't want to be caught by the order that hunt all act of magic.
For them all magic is black and they actually can't imagine any other type of magic.
The book starts with the main character after he has been somehow transformed and has lost most of his memory. The story then goes on with him trying to understand what is happening to him.
