What a wonderful story! It really was a lot of fun and my favourite scenes were between Darcy and Lizzy (surprise surprise!) when she was 'The Houseguest' at their home in London. Seeing how their relationship built up, developed and changed from the first meetings at Meryton (which, lets face it, didn't go well for Darcy!) was very sweet.

It was clever how certain scenes and conversations seen in the original were included in different contexts and between different characters ('You insolent boy!') and how important revelations were revealed in different ways (for example the truth about Wickham and the real reason Bingley left Netherfield.)

There were still a few issues between Darcy and Lizzy which needed to be resolved, adding to the, well... not suspense, as we all know they would get together in the end, but it adds interest to the route of getting to their happy ending. And the issues weren't drawn out too long, nor were there never ending problems (it annoys me when there is just problem after problem after problem...)

I also enjoyed seeing the jealous side of Darcy! In the original, Wickham wasn't really competition, at least not for long. It was nice for Darcy to have some competition, and serious competition at that! Jealous Darcy was funny!

There were many delightful additions to the story, character wise, and I loved to get to know Georgiana and Col. Fitzwilliam more. Col. Fitzwilliam was a very funny man! He brought humour to any scene he was in!

I especially loved the relationship between Georgiana and Lizzy which became very sisterly. The whole story is based on them meeting earlier in the story and it was nice for them to meet quicker, as really, in the original they don't meet for quite a while, but once they do they get on marvellously, as they did in the variation. It didn't take long for them to get to become very close friends and the influence of Lizzy that was rubbing off on Georgiana was great, as it was giving her the much needed confidence after the blip with Wickham. Georgiana was very sweet and innocent, but as I said, she grew throughout the novel and as she and Lizzy became almost like sisters, you could see the enjoyment Georgiana had in having a sister! It was so sweet!

The ending was very sweet between Darcy and Lizzy (which is always good!) and the very, very end was a great way to finish it as it was so nice seeing what happened to all of the characters in the story, especially the new characters.

I highly recommend this to anybody who just wants to see more of Darcy and Lizzy, with a great take on the original story!

Re-read 1/11/17

This book features one of my favorite storylines for Elizabeth gradually falling for Darcy. It feels really natural. I especially love how upset she is

Original read 3/13/16

This was a great story. Maybe more like 4.5 rather than a full 5 stars, but worth rounding up. I'm always in favor of a solid friendship between Elizabeth and Georgiana. I also love stories that heavily feature Colonel Fitzwilliam (especially if he's giving Darcy a hard time about Elizabeth), and those with a friendly and interesting Lady Matlock. I liked that Darcy's competition for Elizabeth

The circumstances of the story allowed for Elizabeth and Darcy to spend a lot of time in each other's company. I enjoyed getting to see their interactions, but it was especially nice because Darcy's pride and arrogance and Elizabeth's prejudice still had to make long journeys to understanding. Too many times when they get to see one another more, Elizabeth falls for him too quickly and he softens too quickly...but that wasn't the case here.

The only thing I didn't like was the epilogue. It was benign enough, but I'm not fond of epilogues that summarize every little detail of every character's future. I greatly prefer the ones that give us a small glimpse of Elizabeth and Darcy's future and then bow out gracefully.

Surprises galore in the epilogue…wait for it…it is such fun: 4-stars

This was adorable and I am glad I read it. I found low to moderate angst and a HEA that didn’t feel like pulling teeth. I also enjoyed the epilogue…what surprises await the unsuspecting reader. I love a good epilogue.

The reviews are good and you can read them for the outline or gist of the story. The road to our HEA was fraught with highs and lows. Because we are dealing with two very passionate people, those highs are really high and the lows can be very low as they think all is lost. That is ODC and that is the way they deal with their emotions.

I loved the interplay with the secondary characters. The Matlock Clan was wonderful. We all love our dear Colonel. Lady Catherine was a scream and Darcy handled her so well. That was fun.

Charles and Jane get their HEA. Caroline was her usual self and Mrs. Hurst was very different in this version. That isn’t completely revealed until the epilogue so hang on and wait for it. Georgiana was preparing for her season the following year and enjoying Elizabeth’s sisterly company. Life goes on after Ramsgate.

The Bennet family was the same and continued on after the two oldest were married. Poor Mr. Bennet didn’t have any sense spoken after they left. His future was revealed in the epilogue.

New characters were introduced and you don’t fully see the reason why until the epilogue. Yeah…you have to wait for it. Sorry, that was the last one.

Problems: Minimal errors, you can’t catch them all. One that stood out was an engaged person, fiancé [male] and fiancée [female]. I have noticed that this is often confused in several JAFF variations that I have read. The language and opinions were a bit modern and some reviewers were aghast. Propriety, etiquette, and comportment went by the wayside occasionally. However, it was a good story and with more research those era problems will diminish as the author progresses in her craft. I got caught up in the story and soon forgot about them.

2/6/14 - on Amazon: Wow, 82 reviews and most of them 4 or 5 stars-yes, I read all of them. I read this book twice within the first month of owning it. And although I am not an expert on Regency language, conventions, etc. and so can't critique such, I am a big fan of JAFF and know what I like or not in such stories. This book was a page turner and that was without the sex scenes which we find in some. I agree with the one reviewer that there was not the angst, which I personally do enjoy. Everyone was on fairly good behavior, even though Elizabeth overhears Darcy badmouthing Jane's family as the reason he influences Bingley not to continue wooing Jane. I really liked being in Darcy's head. And I liked that he had serious competition. The epilogue was detailed and very satisfactory. I always like hearing "happily ever after". One thing missing from Jane Austen's book is whether or not there were any children for any of the couples. Since I am not an expert on that period, I am wondering if children were "out of sight, out of mind" even in this type of novel. Furthermore I enjoyed the fact that the spelling and grammar were much more correct than in so many other novels in this sub-genre. On a kindle it would be difficult to make corrections but with my paperbacks I do pencil in corrections.

I doubt that Lizzy could have had a "sleep over" with Georgina, whether or not Darcy was in residence, or that Lady Matlock would have taken a woman with no connections or dowry under her wings, but, hey, it made for a good story. Yes, Wickham is not a factor here but then the younger sisters are not part of the story. For a first novel Elizabeth Adams did a fantastic job in my opinion. I will look for more from her.

I listened to the charming audiobook, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sweet, clever, and loads of fun, this was just the sort of low-angst but detailed story I enjoy for down time (it was my Laundry Day companion for a few weeks). Nicely done, Elizabeth! Can't wait for more.

One of the first variations I read and still a favorite of mine. I can’t imagine anyone not loving this book.

I recommend it highly

After skimming through it again I found one of the things that make this story special.

Lizzy is the P&P Lizzy and not the shrewish or super smart, or perfect Lizzy we get in so many variations. She intelligent but no more than the original. She isn’t mature yet. She is naive but you can see she won’t be for long. She’s not arrogant or super confident. Just a little confident. She is not super obstinate, she can listen to others and change her opinion. She’s not emotionally damaged from her upbringing. Having the Lizzy from P&P is a huge plus. Makes it feel she is real and familiar.

I liked this book. Perhaps if I hadn't read it between two books I loved I would have appreciated it more.

In this case Lizzie was a little too obstinate to accept that just maybe, a little bit, Darcy liked her. I found the actions of Lady Matlock a bit absurd. But this new and improved Georgiana is wonderful. The parts of Lizzie and Georgiana becoming friends are fun.

TYPE OF AUSTENESQUE NOVEL: Variation

TIME FRAME: Before the Netherfield Ball to ten months later + Epilogue

MAIN CHARACTERS: Elizabeth Bennet, Georgiana Darcy, Mr. Darcy, Colonel Fitzwilliam, Jane Bennet, Colonel Fitzwilliam, Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner

WHY I WANTED TO READ THIS NOVEL: The Houseguest came onto my radar back in 2013, when it was only published as an ebook and had loads of favorable of reviews on amazon. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about it and have wanted to read it for a long time. (So glad the author changed her mind about publishing a paperback! Thank you, Ms. Adams!) Variations are one of my favorite types of Austenesque novel and I thought the premise of Georgiana and Elizabeth meeting earlier in the novel an interesting one to explore.

WHAT I LOVED:

- Exploring Friendships: I loved seeing Georgiana and Elizabeth as friends! Georgiana has no hidden motives or agendas (she isn’t trying to set Darcy and Elizabeth up), she genuinely adores Elizabeth and is thrilled with her first experience of having a female her age around the house. Their giggles, secrets, and schemes together were so sweet to witness – loved their sisterly connection. :) I also loved seeing the friendship that developed between Elizabeth and Darcy and Elizabeth and Colonel Fitzwilliam.

- A Gradual Growing Regard: Speaking of friendship, I loved how Elizabeth saw Darcy as a friend. Her introspection about her feelings and opinions of him was wonderful to witness – I truly felt the change in her heart take place on the page. I liked that it wasn’t an immediate change or a sudden realization; I enjoyed seeing her contemplate Mr. Darcy and observing the evolution of her feelings for him. Their interactions were adorable to witness, Darcy’s heart is so full of love, but he keeps it very much to himself. And seeing Elizabeth be sweet and friendly towards Mr. Darcy just made my heart melt. Loved the scenes where Elizabeth prepares Darcy some tea, their playing in the snow together, and when they both (at different times) came upon each other sleeping! So sweet!

- Lord Malcolm: A new contender for Elizabeth’s hand!! This suitor is handsome, wealthy, well-connected, and charming; and he succeeds in turning Elizabeth’s head a little. Especially since Darcy has lost her trust and she doesn’t believe he would ever condescend to marry someone of her inferior connections. I enjoyed the little bit of tension Lord Malcolm brought with him, he charmed Elizabeth and frustrated Darcy quite effectively! For a low-angst variation where Wickham, Lady Catherine, and Caroline Bingley don’t prove to be very big foils, Lord Malcolm provided the perfect amount of conflict and contention.

- Away from Home: This variation had such a unique feeling to it because most of the action takes place in London between the Netherfield Ball and Elizabeth’s visit to Kent. It was a refreshing change to see Elizabeth travel to London, stay with the Darcy’s, and be away from her family.

WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:

Some Minor Quibbles: While this story was every bit as wonderful as I expected it to be, there was a moment or two that caused me to quirk up my brow. Such as, how did Georgiana being in Meryton the same time as Wickham not cause Darcy any anxiety? How come the Ramsgate incident was never spoken of between Darcy and Elizabeth? How could so many people like Colonel Fitzwilliam, Mrs. Gardiner, and Lady Catherine suspect Darcy’s feelings for Elizabeth, but Georgiana, who lived with both of them, have no clue? Regardless, these were very minor quibbles, and didn’t detract from my enjoyment of this lovely tale!

CONCLUSION:

The Houseguest by Elizabeth Adams was definitely worth the wait, and well-deserving of all the praise it has received! An enchanting, sweet, and tender story written with skill, originality, and playful humor! Definitely one I would recommend!

2024: re-read and upgraded to 4.5 stars.
2021: Pretty long but still enjoyable. I was relieved to see that the characters were acting and thinking like adults unlike many PP variations, even though a bit too modern but well, its ok for me when the rest works.

I loved the premise of this book, Georgiana and Lady Matlock's friendship with Elizabeth. Lady Matlock's attachment to Lizzy seemed unusual, but it had a satisfying explanation. Darcy was dragging his feet for quite a long time, but they got their HEA. There were a few good turns and twists, and characters were well written.

I really loved this! This was a well thought out and enjoyable variation of P&P that brings D&E together through a close friendship between Elizabeth and Georgiana when Darcy brings his sister to Netherfield when Bingley was settled there. This story has it all. . . fun, joy, heartbreak, anger, forgiveness and so much more. A must read for P&P fans!

For probably 80% of this book, I really enjoyed it.... but now I've finished I feel a bit short changed and disappointed.

The premise of the book is that Elizabeth and Georgiana become friends at Netherfield and keep in touch following the departure. The next thing Darcy knows, after spending weeks trying to get Elizabeth out of his head, is that she is a guest in house as the request of Georgiana. What follows is a really lovely tale as Georgiana and Elizabeth become firm friends. Darcy and Elizabeth also become really good friends... of course, things have to go wrong!!

Lady Matlock takes a very unlikely interest in Elizabeth and I didn't really like this part of the story. Also, this story was a real slow burner - the reader spends a lot of time with Darcy and Elizabeth and seeing their relationship change - then, all of a sudden we fast forwards to the end! No sign of the part of the story we've actually all been waiting for... Then there is an Epilogue of the worst kind - it spans 25 years with the mention of so many children you can't possibly remember them all.

I was really loving this until the end. It just all felt a bit rushed - although if the tale continued at the same pace as the first half, it would be a huge book. The style of writing is also very American which, although distracting, I could forgive when I was enjoying the story. All in all, an enjoyable read with generally low levels of angst.

I'd forgotten that I already read this. I would give it 3 stars, no reduction, today. But I wish I'd remembered, or checked here, and known I'd already read it. This time I read it as part of her Comedy Collection, and it's not really a comedy in my opinion. If I'd remembered, I would not have reread it, as I usually save my rereads for books I enjoy more. I do love some of this author's work, however. Think of Me and Cursed are excellent. This story, though, is very low-stakes, low-angst, and a long read. It has its good moments for sure, and is not badly written, just very long for what it is, at least for my liking. Clearly other readers think differently.

Review August 28, 2019
2-1/2 stars rounded up. Why am I not in love with this book as other readers seem to be? It is a sweet story, but for me it falls a bit flat and seems too similar to some other JAFF I've read. It had a lot of small problems, word usages (decadent when I think she meant opulent), wrong forms of address, etc. But those weren't that prevalent and I could have lived with them if the story had been more compelling or moved along faster and ended sooner.

This is a hard novel to review because it's difficult to do it justice in a few words.
The warmth, depth and thoughtfulness is hard to describe, it must be experienced.
It took a long time to read since I often paused to ponder. It had a lot of food for thought. Austenesk in it's execution.

Georgiana visits Netherfield and befriends Elizabeth. They correspond and when Darcy comes home after visiting his aunt, Elizabeth is visiting his sister in London. They are thereby thrown a lot into each others company and feelings starts develop. There are misunderstandings, competition (Lady Matlock as matchmaker ) and uncertainties. It does not follow canon. It's a very unique, slow paced, but none the less, a captivating story.

Heartily recommend this book!

i liked the first three quarters of the book..i don't know if the characters personalities straying from the original text can be a measure of whether the book was good or not , but I didn't care for it
but it's still pride and prejudice so I enjoyed it. I've always wanted to see more of elizabeth's relationship with georgiana , that was done well.
could have done without the epilogue, instead of showing a snippet of the darcys' domestic bliss (something that Darcy envisioned throughout the book) we were subjected to an account of everyone's numerous sons and daughters

Lovely

A sweet little change-up in circumstances, where Elizabeth becomes best friends with Georgiana Darcy early on in the saga, when Georgiana visits at Netherfield Park with her brother. She invites Elizabeth to visit and stay at Darcy House in London, and thus Darcy is thrown into Elizabeth's company more than he would like, since he's trying to fight his attraction to her.

Georgiana is the main catalyst that brings about change in this variation, not only with Darcy's feelings, but also with Darcy's relations. It seems that Elizabeth does so much good for Georgiana's spirits that Darcy and the Matlocks can't help but notice and appreciate her positive impact on the younger girl, thus smoothing the way for Elizabeth's acceptance. There are the usual villains in the story, but the only one who does any real damage is Lady Catherine, and she ends up getting a set-down for the ages. Caroline Bingley has her claws out, but she's fairly ineffective. Wickham has only a small nuisance role in the story, and he's disposed of without much fanfare.

This is a romantic story in which Darcy and Elizabeth are living under the same roof for much of it, resulting in a quicker realization of their feelings. This isn't great literature, but just a charming story with a low level of angst. It's well written and well edited. I recommend it.

This was a really enjoyable P&P variation - I will agree with some of the other reviews in that the ending happened too quickly. Elizabeth joins Georgiana at Pemberley as her guest, not thinking Darcy would be there, when he shows up several days after her arrival. Darcy is already head over heels for her and Elizabeth is still prejudiced by his poor behavior in Hertfordshire. I did like that you get to hear Elizabeth sort out her "character sketch" of Mr. Darcy throughout the beginning of the book. She goes from disdain to indifferent to friends and begins to consider her feelings deeper when she overhears him slight her family and admitting his part in separating Jane and Bingley, sending her running back to Longbourn. It was fun to see Darcy's Aunt Matlock trying to find suitors for Elizabeth and a possible connection between Elizabeth and Sir Malcom. This is where I think the book began to wrap up too quickly... Elizabeth forgives Darcy immediately, he asks to court her a second later and about a minute later he proposes. If the author had carried this out more in depth it would have been a 5 star book.

This is another wonderful story from darcyandlizzy.com. The story starts with correspondence going back and forth from Darcy and his sister Georgiana. The final result is that Georgiana gets herself invited to Netherfield for a visit where she meets and befriends Elizabeth. This twist changes things, for when they all quit Netherfield quickly Georgiana and Elizabeth continue there correspondence. Now this would not be a problem but Darcy decides to go to one of his estates for a few weeks and Georgiana invites Lizzy to London to keep her company and well who do you think comes home unexpectedly. That's right Darcy, well the story has lots of misunderstandings and plenty of angst but not too much. But as we all know the road paved to true love is paved with trouble. Wonderful story and I do hope this writer continues writing and maybe publishes this story. Very much enjoyed this novel.

More telling than showing. And a heroine, styled as frank with her opinions who, when she gets upset, packs up and leaves in the middle of the night and goes far away, rather than discuss, with the person in whose house she has been staying and who has been accommodating, and with whom she has had conversations, what happened. She does a lot of "getting upset and not talking".
And a hero who is portrayed as completely adoring and as having to bear pretty much the whole weight of making the relationship work.
He makes apologies in this story. She never does.
I had a hard time believing that I was reading about a relationship that would be, long term, as sweetly idyllic as the epilogue indicated.
Fantasy.

I really liked this P&P variation. The focus was on D& E and the progression of their relationship without all the angst and drama. Okay, there was a little drama. You get to see Elizabeth fall in love with Darcy. And it doesn't happen quickly. There is confusion and misunderstanding (of course!) There is very little of the Bennet's, Wickham, Bingley/Jane and other secondary characters. This story focuses on the relationship of D & E and between Elizabeth and Georgiana. There are some hilarious moments. My favorite is the dinner party where Elizabeth is sitting between two potential suitors. I giggled like a little girl. I'm glad I took a chance and bought this on Kindle.

Flirtatious, leg pressing, skin tracing, lusty dream having Darcy is everything.

I so enjoyed this Pride and Prejudice vagary! At one point in my life I read an awful lot of Pride and Prejudice retellings and continuations; so many that I felt a little burnt out from them. The author’s dedication says it all, “For all the Pride and Prejudice fans who just can’t leave well enough alone, this is for you.” Pride and Prejudice fans, counting myself, just can’t seem to leave Elizabeth and Darcy’s story alone and for the first time in a long time, I’m SO GLAD.

Adams’ unpredictable retelling was so enjoyable. Fans, READ THIS BOOK!
description

Things I loved about The Houseguest:

Mr. Darcy
In no way is Darcy a static character in The Houseguest. He’s as changing as any character unknown to the reader could be. Adams’ Darcy is adorable! His brooding sensitivity is on full display through Adams’ command of the omniscient narrator. In past retellings I’ve always encountered the cold, collected, unfeeling Darcy longing for a softer, patient, deeper sketch of the character Austen had presented. Adams did this beautifully with fun touches of humor and devilishness that I really appreciated!
Flirtatious, leg pressing, skin tracing, lusty dream having Darcy is everything.
“And what kind of story would suit your fancy, sir?”
“One where at least one of the Misses Bennet is behaving rather badly and gets properly punished, preferably you.”
“Mr. Darcy!”
His devilish grin was the only reply she was to have.

Elizabeth & Darcy Fluff
The back and forth between these two characters in The Houseguest was so much fun, I found myself smiling and giggling madly in more than a few scenes. Adams, with her lovely presentation of our beloved characters and teasing insights, made me love them all over again.
And… let’s talk about the romantic scenes… YES! PLEASE!
“Elizabeth. My own Elizabeth.” She smiled at the love-drunk sound of his voice and the heat of his breath on her neck. “Be mine. Be mine, Elizabeth, no one else’s. I cannot live without you.”

Secondary Characters
Adams… look at you giving Colonel Fitzwilliam all the love and attention he always deserved! Yasss!

Georgiana is as lovely as ever and I was relieved that Adams respected the character enough not to turn her into some vehicle for Elizabeth while inside the Darcy home.

I really dislike Caroline and Adams gave us what we always wanted, the moment Caroline hears about the engagement… haha!!

Did I think anything was problematic?

The Ending
I’m one of those readers that does not like things tied up neatly. Leave some things for me to ponder about. I know how hypocritical that may sound from someone who reads so many retellings...
Adams left nothing untold.

The Proposal
Go ahead and think of the most iconic literary scenes and you will undoubtedly think of Darcy’s botched proposal to Lizzy.

I enjoyed the prolonged anticipation in this retelling… when is he going to do it? Where?

Overall… I enjoyed this story immensely. Adams’ writing style is clean and enticing. One of the best retellings I’ve read.
