I’m flying through this series too fast! It’s so intriguing. I can’t say much because it’s the 3rd volume, but we’re introduced to a new character that not only changes our understanding of why Caesar and Nakaba were married but also the importance of Nakaba’s power. Honestly, there are so many twist and turns that I wasn’t expecting! This is genuinely a good story even the romantic elements between Caesar and Nakaba. I actually feel for her because I think that Loki’s anger puts her in a tight position that’s unexpected. She doesn’t want to betray Loki but at the same time she can’t deny how she feels for Caesar. With the new reveal and the possibility of war, I’m excited to dive into volume 4.

There are many happenings in this volume!

*The following statements contain spoilers.*

Okay, so first, the fashion in this manga is amazing. It really suits its fantasy genre! ♥️

Second, Nakaba and Caesar admitted to themselves that they like each other (it's still a secret!). Nakaba is still torn about whether she wants to let herself fall in love. It is really fast, their change of heart!

Third, the "woah" when they cut their hair and said that Nakaba can change the world!

Fourth, it is so sad about those times when Loki raised the princess on his own, alone. 😥

And last, they met another prince from another country! And he knows about the power of arcana! He is cute and looks studious. 😙

Nakaba, a princess of Senan who is basically still a political prisoner by being wed to the young prince Caesar the second born of Belquat. Although she does not want to care for her political husband he has been able to show her compassion and patience regardless of Nakaba's attendant Loki's advice not to let him into her heart. With her growing closer to Caesar she must come to understand the consequences of her choices even as the other royal members continue to try to control and manipulate her.

Next with emissaries from the country of Lithuanel visiting Nakaba meets a strange young man with a general uneasiness around women named Akhil with an uncanny knowledge of her people and the Arcana of Time which she has access to. Such knowledge could be dangerous to her since most of her people have been wiped out due to fear of the power and she is in the middle of a dangerous place even if Loki and Caesar will do their best to protect her. Of course as bad as that can be the secret everyone discovers toward the end of the book could be even worse for any not from Belquat and Ajin in particular.

I really like Nakaba above all of the characters and when the king and queen tried to dye her unusual red hair black she retaliates in one of my favorite moments of the book when she cuts all of the newly black hair from her head just as Caesar sliced his own long hair off because he could not protect her before the die did its work on some of her hair. :)

This is the last full volume I read while in Japan. I remember it being so good and what really hooked me. Toma Rei's characters can be really stubborn but when they decide to be that way for the good it's such a good story. I was so happy to re-read the part where Caesar cut off his hair for Nakaba. So great...

Okay, wow. Things are picking up now and getting quite serious.

The character development is here again, I love how the author gives us just a little bit more each volume. In this volume we see just what the royal family will do to the princess, even when she's to marry the prince. It was sad and heartbreaking and was of the darker scenes I've seen for the series so far but think it's so important for the advancement of the plot. We see A LOT of growth with the prince and a lot of rising tensions around the characters, both good and bad.

A mystery aspect was added this volume. What will the princess's guard do to get what he wants, what will he do to achieve his goals and will it be at the expense of just himself or those around him as well? I guess we'll have to wait to find out.

Nakaba, the princess is dealing with dueling hearts. Right and wrong. And all around what is best for her, the people she cares for, her own home country and even the one she's falling in love with. We get to see her internal struggle throughout this volume and it was done quite well.

The political intrigue took a new step this volume, we were introduced to another royal family or neighboring kingdom. This brought with it a new character that is willing to teach Nakaba about her power. The reader gets some explanation and insight on what to expect from the magic in the series going forward and I love the way it was introduced to us farther.

Every time I read a volume from this series it never feels like enough and then I’m having to wait for the next one from the library! I just need to read them now!

Things are heating up between Caesar and Nakaba. I love seeing where their relationship grows and I wish Nakaba would jump on it. He cares so much for her and it shows through his actions. He wants to make her happy and even go against what he thinks to do it. I just love him so much!

Loki is one character I am hesitant about. He has known her since birth so it would be weird if they got into a relationship together. I’m not sure how he truly feels but or what his whole agenda is but he definitely knows how to use a sword! He can protect me any day of the week.

A new character has enter in as well and he knows of Nakaba’s secret. I am very curious what he wants exactly and how it will all play out with war looming over them.

Overall, I loved it. Things are getting intense when it comes to relationships and war. I am here for it all!

Read more graphic novel reviews at The Graphic Library.

Palace intrigue becomes deeper with a royal delegation arriving from another neighboring kingdom. The king of Belquat orders Nakaba’s hair to be died black so they can hide their shame from their new visitors, but instead, Nakaba cuts her hair off, and Caesar does as well in solidarity. Caesar also puts Loki into his personal guard so that Loki is more protected from the king, not knowing Loki’s plans to fight against the Royal Family. Ankara is confined to quarters for the duration of the visit, but that of course doesn’t stop her from venturing out. On one such occasion, she meets an emissary from the visiting party, and she can’t stop herself from seeing a vision. The visitor realizes what power Nakaba has and reveals he knows much about it, which intrigues Nakaba, but the visitor may have more nefarious intentions for Nakaba and her gift. He announces his intention to take Nakaba back to his kingdom, which instantly sets Caesar and Loki against this stranger.

Nakaba continues to be fairly weak and completely unsure of herself. She is growing to not trust Loki because of his plans against the Royal Family, but she has no back up plan to that. If she loses her last friend in the world, she’s got nothing else going for her in a foreign kingdom that has no love for her. I was happy for the inclusion of this knowledgeable stranger because we have had no information about the Arcana other than it’s super rare and people will try to manipulate Nakaba for it. I am hoping that Nakaba doesn't continue to be the weak, helpless female at the mercy of all the strong men around her, but I do know that some students love to read these stories, so hand to your hopeless romantics who love fantasies.

I have to review the first seven volumes in one go, because I gulped this series down. It's paced so well (for my taste) that I really just open the book and when I look up I've read 100 pages and reach for the next volume. It's probably good I kept such a large chunk around, after having glommed onto the series in scanlation. These volumes take me right to the end of my scanlation read and into new territory.

The mangaka has a real gift for giving point-of-view time not only to the heroine, who becomes a strong part of the overall cast and certainly the main catalyst, but not the be-all and end-all of the books.

There is certainly a want to present a strong active, fantasy-female role model for girls in this series. Nakaba starts out as the repressed, despised sacrifice to a political marriage, where she had only existed and not lived. The first volume which starts with her marriage to the enemy country's second prince who "seems" privileged by his hair colour (the ruling class all have black hair) and general acceptance at his court, sets her up as isolated again and only supported by her Ajin (beastman) attendant, the same man who saved her when her village was slaughtered (by the royal father of her husband in a planned attack across the border) and raised her from a toddler while just being a teenager himself.

You can already see that all kinds of historical threads are spun in the first few pages. There's a certain high handedness and willingness to accept deus-ex-machina reveals if you want to enjoy this story (for example we learn in one volume that the trusted attendant of the prince, Bellinus, who has been with him from smallest childhood in flashbacks is ALSO the most trusted advisor to the king, which hadn't been seen or mentioned before at all, so certain political plot developments can actually work out), but the focus of the mangaka is on the characters want to change the political system for the sake of personal relationships.

All built around the almost messianic character of Nakaba. The men in her life see her as various embodiments - the reason he has left to try and change the world (Loki), the support and belief he never had before and therefore someone to make happy no matter what his own view of the world is (Ceasar), the conscience he never heeded and should have (Cain), the tool whose powers will allow him to change his country's succession (Akhil), the person who promised to save his mother (Rito).

Nakaba herself gets shaken out of her death-accepting fugue (as we find out in the return visit to her original country) and hopelessness by her need to keep Loki by her side in her political exile first and foremost and by Caesar's manhandling her into a reaction, which somewhat plot-necessary swiftly turns into attraction from his side, because of her honest reaction to things (like having her hair colour changed).

In return Nakaba's waking powers make her understand people so much better (even if she doesn't want to) and put the burden of her sight into wanting to prevent certain things and asking for help, Ceasar's avowal of love when she just mentions like and her feeling that he might be a way of changing how the world sees Ajin (of all of the characters she seems the only one who wants people to respect everyone - Loki seems locked in revenge; one of the bitterest aspects for both of them is that they no longer see eye to eye and share everything; Caesar wants to share her vision because she believes in him, but now that he has decided to do so, he goes for it unstintingly and totally - which one the one hand blows their cover in Senan but on the other hand makes Nakaba fall believably in love with him).

Aside: If Toma-sensei is using people's names as a foreshadowing of their character which seems likely considering what Ceasar has sworn and what Cain has turned out to feel, Loki's name is very ominous indeed if you consider it's source.

Princess Nakaba of Senan and Prince Caesar of Belquat marry to seal a peace treaty between the 2 nations sharing the same island. Caesar is ready to hate Nakaba before he even really meets her simply because this is a political marriage and she has red hair instead of the royal black. Then he starts to get to know Nakaba and she totally changes his point of view. And he realizes maybe red hair is something special after all...

The story continues as the kingdom on Belquat gets visitors!

Akhil is a new character being introduced that knows a lot more about the Arcana of Time than anyone else is willing to share with Nakaba. He was a bit of a creepy character to me always lurking about and the way he was drawn was made it seem like this was deliberate. He has his own reasons for her to develop her ability...

The plot is finally picking up in this book and so the relationships level off. Yeah, the pacing is seriously off in this manga but this is Rei Tōma's first full length manga and for that this is stellar stuff. Her drawings are what caused her to debut and I believe it- there isn't a flaw in these drawings and actually I think she's using the art better and better each volume to communicate volumes! I am happy to see plot thought.

There is a fight between the king and queen of Belquat and Nakaba and Caesar takes... Nakaba's side! This is serious growth on his part and I was so proud, like a big sister or something, lol! Loved how this fight went down and the outcome... There is a bit of jealousy on the part of some lesser characters that leads to Loki, Nakaba, Caesar and Akhil to learn the secret of Belquat... it's pretty obvious though the implications weren't as clear in the story as they could have been (until after it was revealed). It's a scary thing to learn for both prince and princess as their relationship will also end in war if the king's plan goes off.

BOTTOM LINE: Medieval Fantasy World with Compelling characters...

It's amazing how much more I liked this volume once the backstory made it possible for me to read Loki and Nakaba's relationship as a big brother-little sister one. :D I know I'm deluding myself and there will probably be ~romance~ later but whatever. Love triangles are no fun and I refuse to read this as one until I absolutely have to.

Needs more girls though. Nakaba's nice but there are currently far too many dicks on this dance floor. 3 stars

"If this is what it takes... to make
you happy... I'll do it. But I won't like it!"

While the pacing issues, mainly involving the relationships between the main characters, are still there, everything else featured in this volume really elevated it above the previous, for me at least. There were some quite funny moments that made me audibly laugh, but there were also moments that made me truly feel emotional for the first time while reading this series (I'm referring to the flashback of Loki, which went a long way to make me like him so much more). I'm also much more interested in Nakaba's power, and I can't wait to see her learn how to use it to her advantage. Last, but not least, can we talk about how adorable Caesar is? Why is he such a lovable fluff ball?? And his haircut is wayyy better than the style he had before! I honestly don't know who I like better at this point, Loki or Caesar.

Reader's Notes:
- this is part of a series and should be read in order
-there is some fantasy violence & discrimination/prejudice against specific peoples (the ajin - people with some animal features and strengthened senses)
-a character accidentally sees another naked (we see a slight side & back profile of the naked character)

Review:
I'm not sure what I think about this particular book. It's still interesting, but I'm not sure what some of the characters' intentions are and if it'll affect if I personally like the story as I have or not.

I do like seeing that Caesar is changing his ways as he truly falls for Nakaba and puts her desires above his own prejudices. I also liked that we get a bit more info on how Nakaba's powers work. I enjoyed the introduction of a new character as well and I'm curious how he's going to fit into everything as the story continues.

I loved the opening scene in the well, and how Ceaser wanted to finally make love to Nakaba. It's gonna have to happen one of these days.

And him walking in on her was hilarious.

One thing that bothers me so much, is how they treat her. She is a princess by marriage but everyone treats her like crap. They put her in the dungeon for no reason, confide her to her room, force her to do things against her will. She is nothing but a spot of dirt that won't come off their beautiful floor. Grr.

On répond à certaines questions, d'autres surviennent. Nakaba est toujours tiraillée sentimentalement. On prend plaisir à voir évoluer les personnages qui sont de plus en plus attachants. Curieuse de lire la suite.

I finished this volume a few days ago and am murky on the specifics for this volume. The big event was Nakaba cutting off her hair when the King tried to force her to dye it black to hide the shame of her red hair. Cesar is in awe at her spunk and admires her persistance. Another royal family from a desert land joins them and the Prince Akhil knows about Nakaba's power of the Arcana, hinting that she could save his land with the power. However, Loki doesn't want her to use or explore the power. I think the pacing is decent so far for the series and the characters continue to grow and intrigue.

Story: ★★★★☆
Art: ★★★☆☆

I felt the art detracted from the excellent story in this volume. Action scenes should depict action. This felt more like a slideshow. The story, however, was very fascinating in this volume. There was court intrigue, ancient secrets, and a new character that opened up the next stage of the story. In addition, Nakaba‘s powers are growing, which gave us tantalizing glimpses into her past at first, and then revealed an entire episode that showed both kingdoms were pretty lousy, but it also revealed that Nakaba inherited her father’s legacy—something her mother died to protect.

The plot twists are so crazy.... man. Good buildup of tension. I can tell that there’s a lot of new information that’s going to be revealed eventually.

*** spoiler ***
Why did he cut his hair??? It doesn’t make sense. Maybe it’s a custom in the kingdom not to cut hair?

Her overreaction to having her hair dyed is laughable. I could tell that it would be an overreaction when they stated their intentions to die her hair.

Also, I totally understand her POV on being called a boy (when she’s a girl) because of her short hair. Her reaction was spot on.

*** end of spoilers ***

It feels like the actual plot is finally getting started. My continuing issue with this series is that I still am not aboard the Loki - Nakaba - Ceasar kinda love triangle going on.

And I do not really feel like Loki, whatever his plans, are going about them with any more finesse than you're average Disney villain. I cannot take this guy seriously at this point. Just - no plan, only random outbursts of stabbiness and some vague wait-and-see.

Maybe I'll eat my words? At least the last few pages made me interested enough to pick up the next volume.

More background story added to the characters. You see why Loki is the way he is. Caesar apparently is feeling more and more for Nakaba. She has feelings for him as well although she is trying to repress them.

I like how the story is progressing. The Kingdom has a visitor that seems to know what Nakaba is. Looking forward to the next volume to see how this story continues to progress.
