A complex and suspenseful mystery. The detectives have interesting relationships and dialogue. I would have enjoyed this book as much, probably more, if the author had not included the killer's point of view. That added a lot of gore and psycho stuff that seems to be a fad these days, but I find to be unnecessary if the basic plot is good enough. Yeah, I'm pretty tired of having to read sick stuff. The author also continues her numerous point of view switches, often within the same paragraph. I was always told this is a no-no in writing, but it's not so bad, just rather strange.
I very much enjoyed this book. This is the third book in this series and the third book of hers that I've read. The characters are memorable, and the story line is complex. I'm never one to ever pick out "who did it," because I enjoy just getting carried along with the storyline. Like the last two books, it kept me turning pages.
Malpractice meets murder in this tepid novel set in Belfast. When troubling toxicology results surface, Craig and his team of detectives investigate the suspicious death of a criminal's pregnant daughter in the maternity ward of a hospital. This leads the team to uncover similar deaths begging the question of malpractice or murder? In the meantime a relentless stalker bent on revenge is determined to make the presumed guilty pay.
This wasn't a bad read through the events that trigger the investigation are a bit sketchy. The book is hampered by way too many characters, suspects and potential victims. Hate when you need a scorecard to keep people straight. could have lived without Craig's romantic qualms, really not interesting at all. But not a bad read for fans of gritty police procedurals.
This is the third novel by Catriona King to feature D C I Marc Craig and his team from Belfast CCU.
The story this time concerns the death of a young woman on a maternity ward and the hunt for her killer. The team suspect she may be the latest victim of a serial killer. To make things just that little bit harder for all involved, the victim's father is one of the Belfast "old boys" with a history dating back to the troubles and his own idea of justice.
The story rattles along at a good old pace, building up to a tense ending (the best of the series in this reviewer's opinion!) and will keep you guessing right up to the very end as to who the killer is.
As with the other books in this series (A Limited Justice and The Grass Tattoo) the members of the team at CCU are a good part of what makes this story flow so well. Their are issues outside the investigation that make the characters feel real, make you really want to invest in their story lines but that don't push the investigative element of the story into the background.
Book 4 should be with us later this year and when it arrives I, for one one, will drop whatever else I am reading to spend more time with D C I Craig and the team.
Death in a maternity unit raises questions and reveals a serial murderer. The author has a good sense of the hierarchy within a hospital and how private medicine works well for consultants. Sympathetic to the feelings of the murderer, acknowledges the devastation of those left behind and the injustice to innocent victims.
Third in a series, with likable characters and a mystery that keeps you guessing. I'm enjoying this series enough that I have already bought #4 and #5 in the series.
It was ok but there were a number of aspects I didn't care for. I am not a fan of a narrative by an unknown villain and there were quite a few characters to try to keep track of.
CATRIONA KING The Visitor. Book 3 in the Craig series. This is a fast paced book from the start to the end. I am loving this series and it seems to be getting better every time. The visitor is causing mayhem at the maternity hospital, killing pregnant woman. You'll love this book I know I did. 5* 13 April 2017.
