The intermixed artwork was gorgeous but the book desperately needs a narrative through line. There’s no main plot to cut back to in order to gain your footing. Without one this mostly devolves into gibberish.
When I first picked this book up at the library, I was immediately intrigued by the layout. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. The art was beautiful and the text was unique. However I felt like I was reading a coded message without the key. Perhaps I was missing something to help me unlock the full potential of this story? My favorite part has to be the story about the white rabbit. Spoiler? I feel it's possible that this book deserves a 4 star rating, but my inability to follow the story made it a little difficult to enjoy. Maybe some day I'll revisit this story with new information.
I was drawn in by the familiarity of the prose, as someone who ranks "The House of Leaves" among their all-time favorite books. Similarly, there were points I was sure I'd lost the thread of what was happening, but sometimes those are the best moments.
The artwork and book design were beautiful from start to finish, even though I couldn't follow the story. The comparison I heard to House of Leaves seems about right.
