This comic was my first touch with The Iliad, unless Troy counts, and I don't count it. I suddenly realized that I don't like Paris anymore. Rewatching the movie made me wonder how I ever did.

A nice way to introduce younger readers to The Illiad, although I would have liked the artwork and panels to be less busy and more clear. At times it was hard to understand what was going on, but I'd still recommend especially for reluctant readers who could use visual aids to help them keep track of what is going on in the story.

I am a terrible graphic novel reader. I have trouble keeping track of characters when they are visually depicted. I kept wishing the illustrator would have assigned a different color to each side of the warring forces but I realize that is likely not accurate to the history. I just could not keep track of who was fighting for who, and even worse was trying to keep track of which god was on whose side. I was hoping to read this as an introduction to the Iliad that might pique my interest to read the true thing. Nope. Just more confused than ever.

Even though the story is well known, this was a fun read. The artists depict the interactions between men and gods cleverly while the author uses pretty sophisticated language and remains generally faithful to the story.

While I believe this lavishly-colored graphic version of the epic is faithful in language and plot, I have a couple of quibbles. The first is the design. The pages bleed into the fold, so some captions placed at the far right or left of pages are hard to read, especially since the print is small. The second is the disconcerting feeling I got from seeing warriors like Achilles, Ajax and Agamemnon in superhero guise. It seemed anachronistic. I would love to see a graphic version done in the style of Willy Pogany, who illustrated Padraic Colum's wonderful 'The Children's Homer' by emulating the pictures on Greek vases. I'm still glad I read this, and it actually filled in some gaps from my reads of the story in children's literature. Perhaps someday I will get as ambitious as my youngest brother and read the original.

I thought this was a good graphic adaptation of the Iliad & appreciated the fact that this version (unlike Age of Bronze) includes the gods in the action. The art is beautiful & it stays quite faithful to Homer's epic. However, it did irritate me that this version seemed almost to erase the female characters from the tale. Helen's motives remain utterly unclear. The seeress Cassandra and Priam's queen Hecuba are never even depicted, nor is Chryseis, the priest's daughter whose return to her father sparks the conflict between Achilles and Agamemnon. And the backstory should have included Agamemnon's wife (and Helen's sister) Clytemnestra, and the sacrifice of her daughter Iphigenia. The only woman character who jumped out in this version was Briseis, whose grief for Patroclus seemed very sincere.

I have to say a was disappointed with this one. I realize there are different translations of the Iliad, but this one seemed to leave a lot out. Some of it is probably me as it's been decades since I read the novel and have forgotten parts of it.

I remembered the Greek Gods being involved, but in this case they were everywhere and involved in everything. Also, the female characters were glossed over and never focused on. For that matter, other than the battle itself, most of it seemed rushed. I think this much have just been very hard to translate in comic form, as it seemed overwritten and slow paced. The ending was abrupt was well.

Overall it was okay, but considering how wordy it was I probably could have passed.

I won't attempt a witty prolix exegesis regarding translations, structural analysis, or character development. The Illiad has many different things for different kinds of readers. However, this condensation of the epic poem hits just about all the major dramatic highlights and is a one night read instead of the long-term commitment of the complex but rewarding classical masterpiece.

You get the broad arc of the original, not it's reading experience. But that's fine. More people will get a taste of the achievement of the poem from this than starting and giving up on the original. But you should read the original too, this is only a taste after all.

Art: B-. Wish it had been Neal Adams or Barry Windsor Smith!
Writing: Follows the story faithfully.
A great way to enjoy the Iliad, for the first time or for review.
Looking forward to reading the Marvel version of the Odyssey...
(Edit: Checked out the Marvel Illustrated Odyssey, and the art was not up to par—lazy and lacking detail. Going to try The Odyssey.)

this was okay, the illustrations didn’t differ very much so they weren’t easy to distinguish who was who and every page felt more or less the same
I also didn’t love the font choice, it was tough for me to read sometimes
This is overall a great way to read the Iliad as pointless information is left out and you get all the information and story that you need
Ended a little early imo

Graphic novel version of Iliad, very enjoyable but lacking in the beauties of well-constructed verse (as you'd expect from a novel). I feel like I'm learning more about the story than when I chewed through a verse translation, and for that I'm grateful.
