One simple revelation about her past turns Selene Warren’s life upside down. Determined not to let her elf half ruin her future, she fights for the love she’s found at Cheney’s side, despite her increasing doubts about the bond they share.
However, when her studio burns down, a new enemy emerges and threatens the lives of those she holds most dear. To save one of her friends from a gruesome death, she must expose who she was and put more than just her life on the line. Her only hope is deciphering her past in time to save them all, but the more she learns, the less she can trust anyone.
Many authors claim to have known their calling from a young age. Liz Schulte, however, didn't always want to be an author. In fact, she had no clue. Liz wanted to be a veterinarian, then she wanted to be a lawyer, then she wanted to be a criminal profiler. In a valiant effort to keep from becoming Walter Mitty, Liz put pen to paper and began writing her first novel. It was at that moment she realized this is what she was meant to do. As a scribe she could be all of those things and so much more.
When Liz isn't writing or on social networks she is inflicting movie quotes and trivia on people, reading, traveling, and hanging out with friends and family. Liz is a Midwest girl through and through, though she would be perfectly happy never having to shovel her driveway again. She has a love for all things spooky, supernatural, and snarky. Her favorite authors range from Edgar Allen Poe to Joseph Heller to Jane Austen to Jim Butcher and everything in between.
I struggled going into this one because I knew the love triangle idea was coming up and I just don't really enjoy those very much. So I very much put off diving into the reading of this. I'd read a chapter and put it away, read a chapter put it away, and I knew it wasn't that long of a book. Finally I got about halfway in and the story picked up and I was able to just read through.
I didn't like this one as much as the first, but it was still a decent story. This tied up a few of the those loose ends and moved the story into a new place. As always the side characters here are great. I like Sebastian and Sy a lot. I'm glad this story ultimately takes the path it does. I felt bad for Jaron, a bit and wished his storyline could have been different. Still I walked away ok with where things ended up.
This book was hard to get into as it had been a long time since I read the first and there wasn't a good recap at the beginning so I was very confused. It didn't help that Selene was having memory trouble that also left her confused. But it picked up and got interesting about halfway through. And there was a conclusion to the current problem and the start of a new problem at the very end.
Wow this story was jam packed with adrenalin. Full of twists and turns. just when I thought I figured it out, I was wrong yet again. I was up until 1:30am finishing this book I just had to see how it turned out. I laughed, I cried and laughed and more. I am excited to see where the next book in the series takes the characters. I hope you find this book every bit as entertaining as I have. I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, which in no way influenced my opinion.
Selene Warren's life will never be the same. Since discovering her half-elf side she struggles with who she is and longs to just go back to her normal human life. Fate however has a different plan for her. When an unknown person is trying to kill her she begins to fear for those around her. A series of murders and an alliance with rebels has Selene distraught and confused. Cheney now the erlking king, has taken on a huge responsibility and hopes that Selene will stay by his side and rule, not only out of duty but with love for him and their race.
As the second book in this series it does not disappoint. A much darker tale is told here with new characters both good and sinister. A battle of prejudice looms amongst the races with political issues and a serious look at the weakening peace in the Abyss. Selene is not as witty as in the last book but we see a more emotional and darker side to her character. Quite a few twists in the plot and an introduction to some new characters keep it very interesting. The love story left me slightly disappointed as we see the bond between Selene and Cheney weaken in this one. Otherwise a great sequel and I look forward to what will transpire in the next segment.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 Stars! Love this series by Liz Schulte!! The author kept me in suspense from the start of this story (from Selene's yoga studio burning to the ground to the uncertainty of Cheney and Selene's relationship). I also enjoyed watching Selene become more of an emotional character, reflecting on her emotional ties with Cheney and her lost memory. While reading, the world around me melted away. I can't wait to read the third installment in the series!
2.5 stars I hate the titles the cover art & find the story only mildly interesting. My following this series is debatable. The secondary characters are who I seem to enjoy. Selene's cousin & Femi have a spin off that seems more my taste.
I listened to the audio book version. While I really enjoyed the first book in the series, for me, this one was just sort of... okay. There is a lot of political maneuvering that goes on, and for me, that moves kind of slowly. In addition, it can get very confusing because as memories are restored to the heroine, they, and other subsequent events are very contradictory. This does all make sense in the end, but for a while, it was just tough trying to figure out what was true and what was not, and while this may have been for the purpose of building suspense and mystery, for me, it just built frustration. It wasn't horrible, though! I still enjoy the main characters, it has some fun side characters (although, I kind of wished some of them played a bigger role in this one than they did), and I enjoy the building of the paranormal world and all of the different creatures/gifts/etc. who occupy it. I do intend to continue with the series. As for the narrator of the audiobooks, I do enjoy the different characterizations she brings, but sometimes her voice can sound somewhat monotonous and drawly, which I didn't always like, but overall, she's okay. Nothing that makes me turn it off or get bored with it or anything.
I think this volume was better than the first. That may be because the characters were familiar so there wasn't too much time spent on developing them but more story telling. I believe all of my questions after reading the first book were answered in this one.
Grandma is still a pill. We find out that Baker is a shape shifter. Selene is continuing her efforts to develop her elven side. Her girlfriends are becoming more involved in the Abyss. We learn more about Selene's involvement with the rebels.
Another semi-cliffhanger ending involving Cheney.
P.S. I don't recall if anyone tells Grandma about the deception regarding Selene. Somebody should.
Good improvements in writing since Book 1. I enjoyed the guessing and confusion and thought it was very enjoyable. A good summer read! Still a light and fluffy series, just in case the title and series name didn't clue you in.
I enjoyed this one as much as the first book. Finished it as fast as the first one. Love the continued development for Selene. This one the characters will start to pull you in different directions. It’s fantastic! <3
Bravo! A good fast read! now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.
The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.
i would highly recommend this author and this book.
Another amazing story by Liz Schulte! I love this woman. Her books have a way of sucking me in so that the rest of the world disappears around me. This book is the second in her Easy Bake Coven series. You can read my review of the first book, Easy Bake Coven, at Identity Discovery Blog.
Book one ends with Cheney and Selene taking over the throne of the Elves. Selene is a half elf, so this appears to be something that is going to cause a problem among the Elf race. The only part that seems ok is that Cheney is a full blooded elf and the heir to the throne. He over threw his father because he tried to banish Cheney for marrying a half elf. Cheney and Selene have decided that it is time for change among the Fae, allowing all the fae races to have some kind of say in how their world is run, including those that are half human. However, we are also introduced to Jaron in the final scene who informs Selene that she has been doing great and the plan is going exactly as planned. Selene also has a memory that involves kissing Jaron, leaving Selene wondering if she really is following some grand plan that she doesn't even remember.
Book two introduces us to Selene regaining her memories throughout the story. These memories leave her feeling even more confused about how she feels about Cheney or Jaron. It also has her wondering why she doesn't remember anything about her cousin that apparently she had been very close with. To top it off, Selene's human ex-fiance Michael is kidnapped, her yoga studio burned to the ground, she finds out she has been cursed, her grandma thinks she killed her parents, and Cheney is acting very weird. She doesn't know who to trust or what to do. It's a big mess that does get cleaned up pretty nicely by the end of the story. There are still questions left unanswered, which I believe are leading to what will happen in book three. It's a fantastic story and I want more!
This is the second book in the Easy Bake Coven series and it doesn't disappoint. Selene Warren has found love in the arms of her elf husband, Cheney, but the problem is she doesn't remember her former life with him. Who was she and why won't anyone tell her anything? When she tries to force the memories, she is assaulted with unimaginable head pain. Throw in a sexy former lover, a murder and kidnapping and this book is full of exciting twists and turns.
The more I read about Selene, the more I liked her. The author has done a great job letting the reader into the mind of Selene as she tries to figure out who is friend or enemy. Cheney is stoic, but underneath that cool exterior, is a smoldering love for Selene. He's one sexy elf. The action is this book never stops and just when you think you've got the mystery figured out, there's another twist in the story. This is a quick and easy read and it wraps up most of the problems, but there is a cliff hanger that will have you clamoring for book 3. Recommended.
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I first off want to say I liked this book slot. I love when I get a book for free on kindle and then end up buying the rest of the books in the series because I'm hooked. I'm going to buy the third book too. I gave this book 3 stars but for me it was more 3.5. It's definitely more paranormal romance then urban fantasy. and that's ok. I usually like my books more action filled but I had no problem with the romance in this book. I love the characters and the world they live in and the story is intriguing. My problem is it seems the shifts in Selenas mood and the way Cheney accepts everything is unbelievable and slightly jarring. I get that she is confused but she goes from 10 to 0 to 10 over and over. I understand why but I think it could have been handled better. Also Cheney just takes everything and is ok with it. totally different it seems then the first book. I was satisfied with how it ended and am anxious to read the next one.
This is a great sequel to Easy Bake Coven (which I loved). Selene (the main character) finds herself needing to choose between two men. Her husband Cheney and another. She has mixed memories of the two and doesn't know who to trust. A love triangle isn't all that takes place in Hungry Hungry Hoodoo. Selene discovers she is wrapped up in a curse and she must break it to survive. But first, she has to determine who cast the curse. And be sure to get it right. Then there is the bond between Selene and Cheney. She's determined to have it broken so she can see how she really feels. IS that a mistake? I suspect will find out in book #3.
I really like both Selene and Cheney as characters so I'm looking forward to the plot thickening in book #3.
I received a complimentary copy of Hungry, Hungry Hoodoo for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.
I started this book way too late at night after just finishing the first book. (I was at that point of tiredness where I just *had* to buy the second book for my e-reader...and promptly read the whole thing till the wee hours of the morning.) I think it was even better than the first book. The backstory was easier to understand, the characters were firm in their character-ness, and the mystery part of the plot had me swinging back and forth between who I thought was the bad guy.
I would have liked a bit more explanation for how magic worked -- especially the magic that ended up being central to the plot. Because I feel like some of the explanations and politics that were central to the plot were just tossed out there without much context, so they were more confusing than they needed to be. But then again, I read it late at night, so it could have just been me.
A mystery story with magic, murder, and mayhem. Mix in some elves, witches, other mystical creatures, a coven, and what do you have? A recipe for a great little novel.
Selene is a witch who finds herself missing nearly all of her past memories and is disparately trying to get them back. In this second book of the Half Baked Coven series, she has two suiters (Cheney and Jaron) with whom she has been passionately involved, The trouble is ... she doesn't remember the details and the more she learns of her past, the more she questions what is truth and what is fiction.
If you want a book that you can't put down and can't wait to get your hands on the next one in the series, give it a try!
Do you like mystery, love, angst and strong, witty characters? Who doesn't!!! Well this story has all of that and more! I'm officially hooked and can't wait to read the next one. Liz does a great job of hooking you in and holding your attention. Selene still doesn't have her memories and the ones she's gaining are weird and she can't trust them or anyone around her. Revelations are revealed and we finally learn what really happened to her. Get to reading!!!
This is a great story. It is a sequel to Easy Bake Coven. Selene, the main character, has to decide between two men and figure out what her true feelings are while still battling the evil that is attacking her and her friends. She has a hard time knowing who to trust, but is triumphant in the end. Elizabeth Schulte is definitely one of my new favorite authors!
Once again this series is amazing. I love Selene and Cheney together but this book takes a new twist with Jaron! I got a little confused with all the twists and turns but in the end everything came together. I love that I can't guess everything that will happen in the plot. I can not wait to read the next book! and hopefully more to come!!
Hungry, Hungry, Hoodoo is the second book in the Easy Bake Coven Series. The series, so far, is a lot less about witches than it is about the Fae, and Selene's struggle to accept both her human and elf halves. The coven is more her friends and emotional supporters than the stars of the series. I like this series a lot, however, if you dislike cliff-hanger endings, prepare to be annoyed.
This book gets 2.5 stars. It wasn't as good as the first and was pretty predictable. At some points it felt like reading a telenovela lol. Like seriously can this get anymore dramatic?!? However the author does it again and ends in a way where I feel compelled to read the next book. So I'm still watching the train wreck and moving on to book 3 smdh
This is definitely the last book in the series I'm going to read. I was already unhappy with the first one and this one just confirmed my suspicions that this series is not for me. I felt like this was some sort of filler book. Nothing really happens except Selene getting her memory back. That's pretty much it and it was so freaking boring.
