This book was very informational and interesting to learn about the details involved in each rock and gem. The outline is organized and easy to find what you are looking for. If you love learning about geology and nature, this book is definitely worth the getting.

There may be some errors in the book, but for the most part I believe it's worth your investment. I'm a geology student and I had an open-book Petrology Lab test last semester where we had to identify rock specimens based on hand-held samples. I did well and we had some pretty obscure samples we had to identify! The pictures are good & the information is good, as well. I'm sure there are some slight mistakes (I haven't actually READ EVERY word on EVERY Page), but i feel that for the price you're getting a decent return. If you need a more accurate & scientific resource, I suggest you look for a used MINERALOGY text. These books have a lot more scientific detail regarding minerals and they generally have really great data graphs regarding the chemical composition of many rocks & minerals, etc.

I'm reading all the way through this, even though it's basically a reference book. My job involves more knowledge of minerals than I ever thought I'd need.

I see it has an average rate of 5, but it's not going to get that from me. The errors in this book are obvious even to a casual rockhound like me. Things like saying something is a major tin ore, when there's no tin in its chemical formula.
