Recensie(s)

I liked this book the most out of all the Eyewitness books because it was the first one I read and because I’m Jewish and I thought it a great summary of the religion and culture of my people. It starts with a chronology of the history of the Jews from Biblical times to the founding of Israel, and then goes on to discuss the Jewish religion and its practices. The last section is a collection of Jewish achievements and famous Jews. This was an excellent DK Eyewitness book.

Used the book for a bit of research for a character I'm writing. If you're neurodivergent and have a hard time focusing on books that contain too much detail and information, then this series from DK is definitely for you. Nice pictures included and a lot of useful information presented in bite-size pieces, so I could easily go back and reference it whenever necessary. A fun way to learn!

What I learned

 Kari Marx (Jewish) was the founder of communism
 Baruch Spinoza was excommunicated because of his views and today is recognized as one of the greatest Jewish philosophers
 Jews who were atheists, orthodox and who converted to other faiths were still Jews under Nazi rule
 Abraham, seen as the first Jew, and his son Isaac and his grandson Jacob are known as the patriarchs (fathers) of Judaism

The layout of the material in the book help make it seen to the reader that the reader wasn’t spending a lot of time reading thus making the subject come to life.

It was interesting to learn that the Hebrew bible consisted of three books:

1. Torah meaning teaching also known as the five books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy)
2. Neviin meaning the Prophets
3. Ketuvim meaning the writings

In reading Judaism I thought the author was talking about Christianity until I realized that Christianity hijacked Judaism and put the name Christianity on it.

Students of religion will appreciate reading Judaism .

I love Eyewitness Books. This one covers the history of Israel and Jews as well as customs and traditions, and the pictures help so much. I learned some fascinating tidbits. I had no idea that there were other times in history outside the Holocaust where Jews were compelled to wear certain items of clothing to identify them as such (in the Middle Ages, it was a pointed hat). Fascinating.

I think this is a good tool for introducing students to world religion. The blurbs were short and helpful and the pictures provided a clearer picture of Jewish cultural practices. I liked the pictures of people posing with different ceremonial clothes that showed each aspect of what they wore and why. The history is very interesting and I like seeing how that led to modern Judaism.

I love Eyewitness books. This one has a great overview of Judaism with lots of photos of people, places, and ritual objects. I used it to make a presentation for my son's class in 1st grade.
