The Alluring End

Rate this book
A young woman is found dead in her quaint apartment home. Her demise was ruled a suicide from the authorities, but not everyone believes that explanation. Two police officers, Jania Lathe and Darst "Dart" Foster, believe something secret is happening beneath it all that estranges their relationship with the law and the criminals within a new renaissance of peace in Philadelphia.

Soon the agents discover that getting too close to the tragedy puts their own lives in the balance. The murder of the girl affects the lives of those obsessed with finding the truth behind it in ways unexpected by even the most prepared for danger.

Justice is desired, but meeting the ends of it is sometimes too much to withstand.

Okay, so I tried really hard to get into this book, especially since I used to know the author once upon a time ago and was happy to see they self-published. The more I read, the more issues arose. It seemed like no one edited the work. Then scenes became more and more unbelievable. First off, the throat-slitting suicide was unbelievable for me. After a quick Google search, I see that it can be done, and believe that the second character that does this has the ability to do it this way, but not the first. Secondly, the way the captain treats his employees didn't work for me. There's no way anyone would have withstood that sort of treatment. Even the chief of police has a boss, after all. And if they don't, there is something called the media that officers can turn to to expose such work conditions.

But the part that upset me the most was with Jenna, a side character that works with Jania. She's an assistant who is found nude and tied up at the police chief's home. She has been the victim of rape, the evidence drying on her back.
THE NEXT DAY SHE'S READY TO DATE AGAIN. I do not have any experience in what Jenna has gone through, however I find it HIGHLY improbable that she would be ready to date once again. I'd assume she would need counseling after going to the hospital, that the police would have been involved because, hello, there's been a rape. To say that every single police officer is dirty is too much of a stretch.

The author does try to keep the action up, and has created a story with a lot of potential. The execution had me skimming throughout the majority of the book rather than investing more of my time and attention.

I think this was a great book. I really liked it because it made me want to keep reading it to find out what was going to happen. Very suspenseful.
