First off, I want to say that I love the little extras at the end of this book, especially the recipe for the cupcakes that Kylie Jean makes. There are also creative writing type and questioning exercises for teachers to incorporate this book into their classes.
------------
Kylie Jean is a young girl who loves yard sales. I can relate to that, as I absolutely love them myself as well. There's nothing like scouring yard sales for cheap boxes of books or videogames!
That being said, Kylie Jean notices something I have pointed out to my parents lots of times.... There is almost always someone selling food/drinks to eat/drink right away at yard sales. From lemonade to fried pies, there is almost always something quick to eat/drink at yard sales.
This gives Kylie Jean the idea to make cupcakes to sell at a yard sale, so she talks her father into talking her mother into having a yard sale.
But, she finds out that the local dog shelter, Puppy Place, is closing down. So, Kylie Jean puts the two together, and agrees to give all the money from the yard sale and her cupcake sale to Puppy Palace to help keep it from closing.
While taking the check to Puppy Palace, Kylie also takes Mrs. Clarabelle, her neighbor, to meet the little dog, Tara. Clarabelle falls in love with Tara instantly, and adopts her.
-----------
Back home, Kylie Jean's mother wants to know when she will next be baking and selling cupcakes at a yard sale. She tells her mother that the next time will be her last, as it's time for a *Going-Out-of-Business* Sale.
----------
But, I feel like nothing can keep Kylie Jean down, and that we'll be seeing lots of energetic adventures from this beautiful little Southern girl in the future.
Speaking of, I love the Southern feel of this book. They say *y'all* alot, and show a great appreciation of yard sales. They also tell Kylie Jean she has to use her own money for her *business* venture. I get the feeling she's raised in a poor family in the South.
