Having put his sins behind him, Gideon O'Riley is eager to follow a new path with his wife Lonnie and their son Jacob, but finds that he's left one detail undone. Cassie Allan claims to have been legally married to him...to still be married, in fact. But where does that leave Lonnie and the baby?

Reminiscent of the Jacob, Rachel and Leah story of the Bible, Gideon is caught between two women and the legal consequences seem to conflict with what is right morally and emotionally. Because the outcome was impossible to guess (and I tried, believe me, I tried!) I wanted to skim pages to get to the conclusion, but I couldn't help but linger over the rich language and the exquisite descriptions. Bischof writes beautifully and expertly places her characters in an impossible situation. What I love even more is that I wasn't sure what I wanted to happen. She avoids the cliché by making her most of the characters sympathetic - victims of the circumstances or of their previous decisions. It would've been easy to create a villain, but Bischof lets readers care about everyone in the story. Truly, my heart was torn, too.

And it's not over. I'm doing my best to beg, borrow or steal a peek at Bischof's third book in the series before October. That's just too long to wait.

Loved this sequel to Be Still My Soul. The opening begins with a twist that took me completely by surprise. I felt every emotion with the characters. Ms. Bischof did an amazing job making the sequel every bit as good as the first book, a rare thing these days. I actually peeked at the back of the book because I couldn't bear to wait to find out how it ended...... And she doesn't disappoint. You'll love the turns and growth that Gideon and Lonnie go through in this book. I already eagerly await book 3 and every other book that Ms. Bischof pens.

There's only one thing I could possibly say that I didn't like about this book: the fact that I have to wait for the next in the series!!

Just as she did in her first, author Joanne Bischof completely swept me away in this book. First of all, the storyworld is fabulous. I felt like I was in the Appalachians the whole time I was reading. Lonnie and Gideon are as sympathetic as ever--and it was fun to see them mature further in this book, even as they face what seems like a hopeless situation. Joanne Bischof has such a wonderful writing voice, as well.

I also enjoyed the introduction of a third POV character--Cassie. Cassie in this book reminded me of Gideon in the first book. Watching her change and grow as a person was one of my favorite parts of the story.

I'm definitely antsy for the third book in this series!

Were you ever so much a part of someone’s story in life that you felt their every heartache deeply, rejoiced with their every victory greatly? Joanne Bischof takes us to this level of intimacy with her characters. In Be Still My Soul (book 1 of the series), my heart became entwined with the story of Lonnie and Gideon. When I picked up Though My Heart Is Torn, after months of anticipation for its release, I was immediately plunged right back into that deep connection with the characters. And oh, what a story it is.

Both Lonnie and Gideon find themselves in the last place they’d ever imagined they’d be after having come so far in book 1—and without (tiny possible spoiler alert…) even the comfort of one another. I longed for them to find their way back to each other, but as the story unfolded I began to see what Bischof had in store for her characters: even through their darkest hours, when all else had seemingly fallen apart, God never left them. They each begin to glimpse this too, and in this raw and tender telling of their tale, I began to yearn most of all for them to grasp onto the comfort found in their Lord. And they did. In the most realistic, tender journey, they each rose up to meet the road they found themselves on.

Your heart will ache as you read this, your joy will swell with pride for them at the hard-won moments of sacrifice and honor. And when you close the cover, you’ll find yourself thinking… “How in the world am I supposed to wait until October for the rest of their story?”

Honestly it’s a five star book. The writing is stunning as is always the case. So why four stars? Emotional trauma deductions. 😂

After the plot in the first book was the usual “having to get married and learn to love each other along the way” plot (which I actually like), the second book revolves around Lonnie and Gideon being forced to be apart because he is already married to another women. This second plot was much more unique, even to the point of being unrealistic. I understand that the time period in which this story takes place lends itself to a couple being forced by others to “do right by” the first wife. But I just couldn’t help thinking, “what about the second wife?” Why do you need to do right by the first wife and not the second?

Even though that part of the plot bothered me, it was definitely an interesting concept that kept me engaged during the first half of the book. The descriptions of the setting and surroundings are so real that you feel as if you're right there in the Blue Ridge Mountains with the characters.

However, once I got to about halfway through the book where Lonnie and Gideon are pretty much forced to be separated, I have to admit that I quickly lost interest. It seemed as if the last half of the book was just Lonnie and Gideon missing each other. I understand that their situation would be extremely difficult, but I don’t think that half of the second book needed to be devoted to only their inner monologues. It was just too long and drawn out. And then after all of that bemoaning the fact that they aren’t together, they each seem to flip a switch and start thinking that they could be interested in other people. That was most unrealistic and disappointing of all. I didn’t like spending 40% of the book reading about how they were devastated over losing the other person, but then by the end of three months they were each ready to move on. It made me wonder if they were ever actually in love in the first place.

While "Though My Heart Is Torn" has an interesting concept, too much of the book relies on the emotions described in the title rather than using action and character development to move it along.

"Though My Heart is Torn," Book 2 in the Cadence of Grace series, does a wonderful job of carrying the series forward--no sagging in the middle here! The characters are written with such raw emotion and they are so real that if you told me they were based on true life, I would believe you. The prose is lyrical and beautiful and the central theme--that God's grace for us persists despite our failings and sins--remains consistent all the way through. If a reader starts the series with this book, the author gives just enough details to get you up to date, but this book will so much richer if you start with Book 1. Both books are amazing portraits of hope and how it can survive no matter what pain or trial someone might experience. I highly recommend these books.

The second book in the Cadence of Grace series is a real page-turner. To say this is an emotional story is an understatement! The continuation of Lonnie and Gideon's story is very heart-wrenching, suspenseful, and so hard to put down. At the end of the first book, "Be Still My Soul", this young couple have finally seemed to find their way in love and settled down to really begin living their life with their new son. Now, in this book, something from Gideon's past comes back to shatter their peace and threatens to destroy what they have begun to build together. The author, Joanne Bischof, writes in such a way as to show the complete humanity of all her characters. She also allows the reader to see how God can work in even such a seemingly impossible situation, to bring about His perfect will. I know you will love this book as much as I did!

Wow. I haven't had a book affect me like this in a very long time. It's beautiful. It's heartbreaking. You will be drawn in and captivated by the characters and their struggles. Lonnie and Gideon have tough choices to make and a hard road ahead, but God will see them through. I don't want to give anything away, so I can't give more details, but this second book in the Cadence of Grace series will capture your heart and not let go. Looking forward to book 3! Enjoy.

3.5☆ Beautiful writing as always, no complaints there! Joanne is an amazing storyteller; she really knows how to tug those heartstrings. I personally don't love the plot of this book, it just made me sad and after all their hardships in book one I just want them to be happy. :( I definitely plan to finish this series though to see how it all wraps up!

Though My Heart Is Torn, ©2013 by Joanne Bischof author of Be Still My Soul

The Cadence of Grace Series
Book 1, Be Still My Soul, is now available.
Book 2, Though My Heart Is Torn, will be available in April, 2013.

Settling into a simple life in the majestic Blue Ridge mountains, Lonnie and Gideon O'Riley have finally found happiness after the rocky start to their marriage. The roguish bluegrass musician has fallen in love with his gentle wife and the God she serves, and Lonnie rests secure in his tenderness for her and their young son. Then a heartless ruse interrupts their peace, bringing them back to Rocky Knob--

The life that called the forest home provided the song that set their feet in motion--birds chirped as they fluttered about, sending down a chorus of jumbled melodies and the breeze in the dried leaves overhead whispered faintly as it rippled through the branches. With the forest providing the music, Gideon lifted his face, wishing he know the words to the mysterious song. Though My Heart Is Torn, page 30

Wait with hope for the Lord.
Be strong, and let your heart be courageous.
Yes, wait with hope for the Lord.
Psalm 27:14

And I'll praise You in this storm
And I will lift my hands
For You are who You are
No matter where I am
And every tear I've cried
You hold in Your hand
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm

Gideon's past calls him back. Sadness for both of them, and though longing for his wife and son, he must return. So beautifully written, you are transported to the depth of their hearts, as a current in a river turns.

Joanne Bischof is such a fluid writer. You are there amid the birdsong, the anguished hearts, the need to go on. Understanding brings meaning to the unraveling, building strength in the least expected. Fear kept them captive; love releases them.

Visualizing, I had some favorite descriptions as I began reading (italics mine):

Prologue, page 1; ...the old man who was too short for his weight.

Chapter 1, page 9; Untouched for nearly a year, the sun-rotted wood seemed to have become a part of the thick bark. Clouds challenged one another in front of the sun, dimming the orchard, cooling the air.
He lifted the ladder over his head and settled it into place, cobwebs catching the light.

Chapter 1, page 13; Jebediah worked silently, the man never needing to fill empty space with words. He'd been that way for as long as Gideon had known him--since the day Jebediah had rescued Lonnie from a life of sorrow; laying down the challenge that Gideon could be more than a man of anger. From that moment on, Jebediah had walked every day with him, through the struggles, through the blessings. All for Lonnie. She'd been worth every moment of it.

Throughout the descriptions of narrative, it is like you are walking along with them. I felt this in the first book too. Both books could be read as a stand-alone, but you will want the background to see the change in characters. Life continues, as our own, and there is no sure thing of what is going to happen. Attitude plays a big part. Accepting or rejecting where we are.

Thank you to the author, Joanne Bischof, for sending me the Advance Reading Copy. I look forward to reading the finished copy, but... this is wonderful the way it is, with a few edits here and there not disturbing the content. Very well written. I look forward to Book 3.

Though My Heart is Torn
"Lonnie only ever wanted to be loved. Now that she won her husband's heart will his past destroy their happily ever after?"
In the Blue Ridges Mountains of Virginia, Gideon and Lonnie O’Riley settle down. Gideon hadn’t planned on a wife, but when he did something he shouldn’t have they were forced to get married. Off they went to find a home, Gideon’s temper got the best of him and when Lonnie could not keep up with him walking he got abusive. Jebediah saved her and Gideon started to change. He started living his life for the Lord. Lonnie and Gideon love each other and have a son named Jacob. When a letter comes that Lonnie’s mother is sick, Gideon agrees to go back to Rocky Knob but, when they get there they find out it was only a trick. Now Gideon must face his past. You see, before he and Lonnie were married he was married to Cassie Allen but, Gideon wasn’t exactly the husband type and she didn’t want him around anymore so they signed the divorce papers and Gideon was free, or was he? Cassie was supposed to take care of the papers and give them to the clergy man to take to the courthouse. Now Gideon is forced back into this relationship with Cassie and must leave the family he loves with all his heart, the only ones he will ever love. How can Gideon make the best of this situation? What’s going to happen to Lonnie and Jacob? Lonnie feels betrayed, hurt, and lied to because Gideon never told her. She wants to hate him with every part of her but she can’t she loves Gideon with all her heart. Read the book to find out the rest of this story that will have you on our toes wanting to know what happens next!!
This book was really good. Now I want to go back and read he first one Be Still My Soul. The third book in the Cadence of Grace Series, My Hope Is Found, will come out in October 2013. Joanne Bischof is a great author, I really enjoyed this book. To find out more about her go to her website. Thank you Waterbrook Multnimah for sending me this free review copy!

I was a bit hesitant about requesting Though My Heart is Torn for review. While I read and (mostly) enjoyed the first book in the series, Be Still My Soul, I found Gideon’s immaturity and misplaced male pride very annoying. Then I see the blurb for this, the sequel. It seems that Gideon’s redemption has just taken a giant step backwards, as it appears he has unknowingly married two women. How does that happen? More importantly, can the author write her way out of this?

The beginning was confusing enough having read Be Still My Soul: I suspect it would be even more so if I hadn't. Again, i's Lonnie who is the victim. In Be Still My Soul, her father forces her into marriage with an unwilling and immature Gideon at gunpoint. Now she finds the marriage she didn't want isn't even valid.

Though My Heart is Torn gives Gideon another opportunity to show some backbone and moral fibre, to prove he really does love Lonnie as much as he claimed. It shows that becoming a Christian doesn’t ‘fix’ everything in our past, because those past mistakes have consequences that can still hurt those we love.

The story is told in third person from the points of view of Gideon, Lonnie ... and Cassie. I found Cassie's point of view difficult, partly because I sometimes mixed her up with Lonnie and then had to backtrack to work it out, and partly because I found it difficult to sympathise with her. It seemed like a betrayal of Lonnie to sympathise with Cassie. And even though Cassie was a viewpoint character, I never felt as though I had a chance to get to know her or understand her. I wonder if the book might have been better to focus only on Lonnie and Gideon.

The writing was strong, and Joanne Bischof carried off a bittersweet and potentially controversial plot with sympathy and grace, although it was less overtly Christian than I expected. I'll certainly be keen to read the final book in the series to discover what happens. Recommended, but read Be Still My Soul first.

I said it about Joanne's first book (in which we first meet Lonnie and Gideon) and I'll say it about this one, too.

This was such a beautiful book.

The best part was receiving it in the mail and diving right into the first page. Right from the start, you can tell something big is about to go down. Something's going to happen that is going to shatter the shaky peace achieved at the end of book one
(no spoilers for those of you who haven't yet read Be Still My Soul!).

And does it ever! It was partly my fault for not flipping the book over and reading the back cover, but I had no idea what was going to happen... and then it did and wow, just wow.

Hope that wasn't too confusing. Just know it's an excellent, intriguing, good grief, how is this going to work out? beginning.

Then it continues. Hearts are broken, lives are changed, separation ensues, hurtful words are spoken...it's a heartrending journey that is riveting in its intensity.

What I Didn't Like As Much

The ending. Meaning: it ended. I milked the ending of this book. I can't remember ever having done that before, but I clung to the excuse of school tugging at my hours and made the last three pages last two days.

Book Three can't come fast enough for me!

Why I Recommend This Book

Though My Heart is Torn is lovely and lyrical. I think what I love best about Joanne's writing is that she conveys so much with just a whisper of a movement or an echo of a heart's thought. I realized that halfway through this book. She doesn't overdo emotion and that is what makes you feel.

If you love historical fiction that offers a glimpse into a forgotten time when life was simpler and at the same time so moving, pick up the Cadence of Grace series.

A heart-rending read that had me glued to the pages!

Lonnie and Gideon have finally found love, but will it all be destroyed by a mistake Gideon made in his youth?

I absolutely loved this book! Heartbreaking and beautiful, this continuation of Lonnie and Gideon's story captured my heart in a completely unexpected way.

Written in a smooth flowing style, Though My Heart is Torn drew me to the story from the very first.

Lonnie and Gideon were tested very much to their limits, and were left with little but God to rely on, their faith even in the roughest, and worst of times was nothing short of courageous. Even Cassie, a character I was pretty sure that I wasn't going to like, had won me over in the end, as she grew in her faith.

I wouldn't pick this book up without reading its prequel Be Still My Soul first because it will make this book so much more compelling. Plus missing out on Be Still My Soul would just be a shame.

Overall, Though My Heart is Torn was a character driven novel, that featured characters of extraordinary, everyday, genuine faith. I highly recommend this book, is was a beautiful journey, full of heartbreak, with triumphs to come, with an ending that made me not want to wait six more months for the next book! Laced with longing, forgiveness, and faith, Though My Heart is Torn is a book I will not soon forget!

What a spectacular sequel to Be Still My Soul!!

I'm still recovering from the heart-twisting experience I read through yesterday afternoon. Bischof does a wonderful job of bringing her characters to life and enthralling you with their story. There's no way to easily explain in this review how much I'm in love with this series but I'll certainly try!

Since I've already mentioned how realistic Lonnie and Gideon are let me next talk about the supporting cast. In Though My Heart is Torn the memorable characters, Jebediah and Elsie make another appearance. They both are such sweet surrogate parents for Lonnie. I also enjoyed seeing Addie again. That little girl is so cute and bubbly!

I truly felt my heart torn like Lonnie's. I wanted to cry about halfway through. I felt myself walking right alongside Lonnie, aching to help her. I haven't read a book that's drawn me in and swallowed me up before. So as I patiently wait for the next book I'll try not to reread both books over and over...

I received this book from Multnomah though Blogging for Books in return for an honest review, which I have done. Thanks!

After staying up late into the night, praying for characters who have stolen my heart...All I can say is, read it.

SPOILER ALERT BELOW

We find our flawed hero ready to be a good husband and father, but he has yet to truly face the demons of his past. He is, rather, hitching a ride with Lonnie's God, with Jebediah's sturdy belief. By the end of this story, one hopes that he comes full circle and though he doesn't realize it, he is at last on the cusp of understanding God's redeeming love. Similarly, the interloper, Cassie, must also go through the fire to understand the desires of her heart are nothing when compared to the needs of her soul.

It's been quite some time since I gave myself over to a passionate story such as this.

Well told. How will I ever wait for book 3???

I can only describe Joanne Bischof's writing as LYRICAL, just like her titles. She's a master of pacing, keeping us sitting on the edge of our seats the entire novel. She also has a deft hand with descriptions--they're never too heavy, but always enough to transport me completely to early Appalachia. I can feel and see the seasons and the chores...and the danger, toward the end of this novel. The characters in this novel are easy to sympathize with. These novels seem to grasp the trauma and heartache of life, but hope is never lost. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

I hate melodramas and soap operas. I'm quick to know when my emotions are being manipulated and I react by shutting them down. But Bischof wrote this so clearly and frankly that it stripped away my emotional defenses and broke my heart. I cried.

Read the books in order, they really won't work otherwise.

Though not as dark as the first book, this was not a light or feel good read. At turns angsty and sorrowful, I had flashes of Julie Lessman in which I thought “how is this couple ever going to end up together?” And we end the book still not knowing how, I have to finish the trilogy to learn the end of the story. I really enjoy this author’s writing, especially the way she writes about place, but this trilogy, while I want to like it, is awfully heavy and does not leave this reader particularly hopeful or uplifted.

Though My Heart is Torn by Joanne Bischof

Gideon O’Riley has two wives—but he doesn’t know it.

Settling into a simple life in the majestic Blue Ridge mountains, Lonnie and Gideon O’Riley have finally found happiness after the rocky start to their marriage. The roguish bluegrass musician has fallen in love with his gentle wife and the God she serves, and Lonnie rests secure in his tenderness for her and their young son. While Gideon’s guilt and his bitterness towards Cassie threatens to burn up his fledgling faith, Lonnie wrestles to find the courage to trust the God who brought them together in the first place. Will their hard-earned love be able to conquer all? –Amazon.com

I was drawn to this novel by the cover and the title. I can usually tell when a book will be good by how the characters or the setting is portrayed on the cover, this book was no exception. I was also drawn to this book because a review said Joanne Bischof wrote in the Janette Oke tradition. Oke was one of the first Christian fiction authors I enjoyed as a young teen. I found this review to be true. Bischof’s writing is vivid and pure. She allows the characters to grow and learn through their experience with the grace of God and threads a ribbon of sweet romance through the plot which is very similar to Oke style of writing.

As I eagerly delved into the pages of ¬Though My Heart is Torn, I found myself reading the first chapter twice, confused by the plot, wondering if I had missed something. It wasn’t until later—half way into the book—that I realized this is the second book in Bischof’s The Cadence of Grace series. That is one draw back about reading an ebook, the cover is small allowing me overlook the fact that it was book two. At first this deterred me from reading the book because, as an avid reader, I always read books in order; however, once I got past the second chapter and began understanding the plot I was quickly hooked on the story of Gideon and Lonnie. (I am now eager to read the first book to learn more about Gideon and Lonnie’s beginning. It is too bad I could not have reviewed Be Still My Soul to begin with.)
In Though My Heart is Torn, Gideon and Lonnie’s relationship is mesmerizing. They are completely in love. Bischof does an amazing job depicting this love with the characters’ loving glances, smiles, charming blushes, etc. The actions of the characters are described so well that it was like I was watching a movie instead of reading a book.
As the plot developed I found myself using several Kleenex to staunch my tears. It is amazing how quickly I became invested in the lives of the characters. I felt Lonnie and Gideon’s pain so acutely that my heart hurt for them. As my Kleenex box became hopelessly low I tried to tell myself this is only a story, but Bischof paints these characters in such a light that I easily thought I knew them and that I was a part of their story.

At the beginning of the novel it was easy to despise certain unlikeable characters, but as they began to grow and change-through the presence of God in their lives- I couldn’t help but learn to love them too. Because of this, I understood how difficult Gideon’s choice is. Honestly, when has it ever been easy to choose to do the right thing over what your heart wants? The characters learn to ask God for guidance, which is a lesson for all of us. We cannot face trials on our own strength, but with God’s guidance and faithfulness we can walk through the waters because He is with us.

As I finished reading the final page I found myself holding my breath, not because it was a bad ending, but because I desperately need to know what happens next. Bischof’s final page will leave you hanging which is, for an author, a delightful ploy to get you to read the next book, but for the reader complete torture! I would almost encourage you to wait to read this book until the third one is out then you would have the pleasure of reading them back to back. However, since I have to wait I think you can handle waiting too. 

Thank you, Joanne Bischof, for this captivating novel! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and cannot wait to read the first and third book of the series. I also look forward to any of your future books.

Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy of Though My Heart is Torn in exchange for an honest review.

Despite being comfortable in the reading habits I have developed over these many years, I’m a girl who can appreciate discovering new books and their authors, but am also a reader who likes to read books that have a high chance of being favorite reads. Anything less and in forcing myself to read a book, the joy of reading vanishes. This particular novel has several attributes and despite my skepticism, it’s fair to say, because of those glowing qualities, I’ve learned that sometimes a risk pays off – in the quietest of ways. Lonnie O’Riley had a rough start to her marriage. It came about after a horrible misunderstanding and now she and her husband, Gideon have found happiness in their small home. Just as the two have finally found each other, they are summoned home again, and Lonnie’s world is shattered when she is told that Gideon is actually married to a girl he grew up with, Cassie Allen. Devastated not just for the loss of her marriage, but also for the sake of their young son, following an unceremonious annulment of their marriage, Lonnie packs up their son and in agreement with Gideon, she returns to the home they made sure that only her faith will give her the courage to build a new life for herself – without Gideon.

Books that take familiar elements and throw out the “rules” are the stories that touch our heart, leaving in their wake a lingering touch that makes the narrative hard to forget. This is what Though My Heart is Torn is all about. Even having the handicap of not reading book one didn’t put a damper on what this story has to say. Being the middle book didn’t – or I cannot imagine it did – drag down this series as the “curse” some middle books suffer (or can) in so many readers estimation, and instead, in many ways, this is probably the strongest book in the trio because of its emotional punch. This is the kind of book any aspiring writer wishes they could accomplish. The poignancy and careful approach Joanne took with it is breathtaking. The characters have their emotions, hearts and dreams stripped bare, which is what in turn makes us fear for their futures. It’s in the heartbreak; it’s in the romance; it’s in the faith; it’s in the word building, it’s in everything; the love in its narrative breaks down barriers and opens up wounded characters for us to cry with. It’s the weaknesses that are the book’s strength.

Unusual to some of the market, there is a quality of goodness to the story that isn’t always found in the Christian fiction historical genre and it literally took me for a spin and I respected the story all the more for it. Part of the reason I don’t get “into” this era as much in historical fiction is because I, regretfully, find it boring. Something about the “prairie life” just doesn’t pull me in no matter how much respect I have for those who lived the life, so when a book like this comes along, I’m all the more astounded, pleased and surprised that it tugs at me. Joanne did an outstanding job creating a new kind of theme within a common era just because she dared to write a book that risked “safe,” and for that reason, I suspect this is one of the rare historical novels that won’t be giving up its place on my bookshelf in favor of something else anytime soon.

Thanks to the publisher for sending a complimentary copy of this novel in contemplation of the INSPY Awards.

This book gripped my heart in so many ways that I cannot express. In all the years that I’ve been a reader, only two books have gotten me so emotionally invested: Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers and Veil of Pearls by MaryLu Tyndall.

This book is the continued love story of Lonnie and Gideon in Be Still My Soul, and it is so heart-wrenching. It keeps you glued to your seat because you have to wonder how the story would end in any way that is tolerable. It’s a story of two people in love who get caught in a web spun by the consequences of one of their pasts. It is clear that one of these two ends is inevitable—people would have to get broken-hearted if the ‘right’ thing would be done, or major painful sacrifices would have to be made if true love would stand. It is so heart-breaking it could mess with your sanity.

As hard as I try, I honestly can’t imagine any tolerable way this story will end; I guess all I can do is follow the author and see how it all ends in the next book, My Hope Is Found. This is why I have nothing but praise for the masterful craftsmanship of Joanne in the story so far. I really can’t wait to read the final book in the series.

The characters are very well crafted. Their role in the story was well stationed to provoke the right emotions. You would find yourself gasping when you should, scowling when appropriate, cheering for your favorite character when they score big and just plain being annoyed when things don’t turn out the way you hope they should. That’s what I call excellent craftsmanship!

I strongly recommend that this book not be read as a standalone. At all! Please, you’d be cheating yourself if you do. The first book, Be Still My Soul, opens your eyes to the broader picture as it should be seen. There is no way you will be emotionally invested, thrilled and satisfied like anyone who’s read the first book before the second if you choose to go ahead to read just this one. It would be like looking at a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces. You simply can’t get the complete picture even though you are carried along enough. So please, get Be Still My Soul first. And just to clear things, I mentioned in the review of Be Still My Soul that Gideon’s back story with Cassie was missing. This book takes absolute care of it. Joanne did an amazing job.

I have no qualms with this book. I would say more, but the story gripped me so much, I’m still at a loss for words a whole twenty-four hours after. As a writer, I can understand why Joanne had difficulty writing this book. It takes courage to take such a bold step to explore this book’s theme in the manner that she did, and I have nothing but applause for her hard work so far. I’m a fan and an encourager of bold and untraditional writing as long as it carries a good message in a powerful and unique way. Joanne accomplished this feat and I thank God for that. She certainly is an author to look out for and put on your lists of favorites.

Our lives here on Earth are an ongoing work in progress, as we face many trials and tribulations which test our faith. With the first book in her "Cadence of Grace" series, "Be Still My Soul", author Joanne Bischof introduced us to Lonnie Sawyer and Gideon O'Riley, who live in the rural poverty of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia at the beginning of the twentieth century. Lonnie is a shy young woman, blessed with a beautiful singing voice like her mother's. She and her siblings, along with their mother, live under the rule of her abusive father. Gideon is a young, handsome musician who would rather play music and pursue all-too-willing pretty young things than work for a living. A talented wood crafter, he chafes at other responsibilities. Due to a misunderstanding, Lonnie and Gideon are forced into marriage. Their journey to eventual happiness is filled with emotional strife, physical hardship, and spiritual searching. With book two in the series, "Though My Heart is Torn", Lonnie and Gideon look forward to a life of joy with their baby son Jacob, only to have a startling secret from Gideon's past shatter their carefully guarded hopes. Gideon never told Lonnie that his intimate relationship with Cassie Allan, a girl whom he knew before Lonnie, had led to a brief marriage. Later, Gideon and Cassie had signed divorce papers, and he did not know that she never filed the papers. Now, Cassie has come forward, claiming that she is still Gideon's wife, and she does not want a divorce. Through the decisions of the local clergy, the laws of the state, and the physical threats of Cassie's brothers, Gideon is forced to annul his marriage to Lonnie and renew his vows to Cassie. Heartbroken, Lonnie leaves Gideon behind and returns to the home they had found with an older couple on their farm. While Lonnie and Gideon long to be reunited, each must deal with the pain of their separation and the reasons why they are no longer together. Gideon's new and hard-won faith is greatly tested, and Lonnie, who has a deep, lifelong faith is emotionally battered. Will Gideon ever be free to return to Lonnie and Jacob? Author Joanne Bischof is an intriguing and compelling storyteller. Her works are exquisitely-wrought, heartrending, and surprising. At the core of her work is a great and abiding faith which ever reminds the reader that the Lord does not promise us that we will not suffer in life. He does promise that after we leave this world, those who believe in him will be given an everlasting life free of pain and suffering. I highly recommend the "Cadence of Grace" series, and I greatly look forward to book three, "My Hope is Found".

It usually isn’t a good idea to start with the second book in a series. But as I dove into, Though My Heart is Torn, I was completely unaware of the prequel. However, author Joanne Bischof, develops an excellent stand-alone story, while leaving me longing for the rest of the story.

Though My Heart is Torn, opens in a homey, romantic setting as the central couple work side by side in their apple orchard. Gideon and Lonnie O’Reilly are relative newly weds. Using vague, but indicative dialogue, Bischof alerts her readers to the couple’s troublesome past. Finally, after the birth of their son Jacob, are they beginning to fall deeply in love.

As a young man, Gideon had been a reckless cad; Lonnie, the last among his careless flings. Finally, in the shelter of their own home and under the gentle guidance of an elderly, mentoring couple, they have put the past behind them.

Bischof quickly inducts her readers into the heart-wrenching drama. Cassie Allan bursts cruelly into their peaceful world, accusing Gideon of abandoning her, his rightful wife. By the third chapter, the O’Reilly’s lives have fallen apart. In a matter of days, Gideon is forced to remarry Cassie; Lonnie and Jacob are sent home to mend their hearts, husband and fatherless.

The rest of the story moves seamlessly between the new families. Every two or three chapters, the narrative shifts. For a moment, focusing on Gideon and his agonizing, bitter life with a woman he doesn’t love. Then, Lonnie who feels broken, betrayed and confused. Bischof shows delicate skill in the development of her characters’ inner dialogue. Quite literally, she leads the reader into each character’s mind.

Personally, my empathy swung wildly between the two women. As for Gideon, one moment I was indignant with him, the next praying that he would find the courage to carry on.

In the story, morally defining, “till death do us part,” became difficult, leaving my emotions even more vulnerable. In fact, at one point, I despaired to finish the book, certain that it would not end well. I was stubbornly set on reuniting Gideon and Lonnie. Love conquers all, I wanted to declare. But Bischof forced me to consider the times when what feels right is not what is right.

Never before have I read a book that played my sentiments so skillfully, and spun my moral compass so violently. By the end of the book, I came admire Cassie, despite her failures. Love had begun to blossom between her and Gideon, and against all odds, Lonnie was moving on as well.

Just as I was willing to accept a different and better ending than my own, the tables flipped again. Suddenly, there is hope for true love, forgiveness and happily ever after. The final chapter left me no option but to read the sequel as quickly as possible.

Though My Heart is Torn by Joanne Bischof is a great story of love that is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the early twentieth century. Lonnie and Gideon O’Riley have settled into a happy marriage and are the parents of a young son. The marriage had a rocky beginning but Gideon has come to love his wife and to also love God. Lonnie received a letter from her father telling her that her mother was gravely ill and she should come home. When Lonnie and Gideon arrived at her father’s house, they found her mother in great health. The truth that hit them both like a ton of bricks was the fact that Gideon was still married to Cassie Allan. He married Lonnie thinking that the marriage had been annulled. The rest of the story deals with how each person deals with this problem.

The author did a great job in developing the characters, plot, dialogue, and action scenes. The characters seemed so real that at times I just wanted to reach out and give them a good shake or a big hug. There was quite a bit of suspense in the plot because of Gideon being married to two women at the same time. Everything in the book seemed so real that I was going through everything that was happening with the characters. I appreciate the way that the author had God being important to the characters and how His love and forgiveness were part of their lives. The book has a good ending but I would have been happier to see a few things cleared up. I am sure they will be answered in the next book in the series. I definitely enjoyed the book but think it would have been even better had I read the first book of the series before reading this one. However, the author gives enough information that one can figure out what happened earlier.

I highly recommend this book but I do think that one might enjoy it more if the first book of the series, Be Still My Soul, is read first. But do not hesitate to read even if you have not read the first book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Waterbrook Multnomah Publishers through their Blogging for Books program in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to give a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
