I won this book in giveaway and was excited to start it. In the beginning of the book I had a hard time connecting with the main character as she was a sleep deprived, workaholic. Overall it was a cute and quick read. I loved the message of the book as it is one I live by...Work to live, not live to work.
A cute, quick story. I particularly related to the main character's desire to get out of dodge when work was driving her to her breaking point. Good descriptions of Montreal, seems like a beautiful place.
A well-crafted, heart-warming novel that is not only fun to read but has an important message of self-discovery. I highly recommend and even though you can't escape your stressful life to a cafe in Montreal, pick this book up and you'll feel like you did.
First, how can I resist a "caffeinated love story?" I'm a coffee addict, so when I saw the front cover I wad hooked. This was such a sweet and romantic love story. I'm glad I found this book. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Oh, now I want to visit Montreal. It sounds dreamy.
I took so long to read it because it was my kindle book. I only read my kindle at Drs offices, waiting for grandkids to get out of school or while the hubby and I are traveling. It would be a few days read if you choose to read it. It was simple, fun and charming. I loved the descriptions of Montreal. I felt Sonja's fatigue about her everyday same old life. Sonja does what we all wish he could, just run away. Read to see how it turns out.
Although it is not the core of the narrative, this romance contains a very realistic portrayal of a highly caffeinated lifestyle.
Sonja Fines works for an advertising agency in Manhattan. Years of doing her boss’ job as well as her own, have left her with good prospects of promotion, insomnia, and a gap where she used to have outside interests. Finally succumbing to the stress, her daily journey to work becomes first a trip to Montreal, then a weekend touring Montreal with Chad, a stranger she meets in a coffee shop.
Although the plot is the standard girl meets boy, girl fancies boy, girl and boy are separated, the descriptions and events give it a solid wrapping of both uniqueness and reality.
The use of minor supporting characters to stimulate and counterpoint inner narrative is particularly successful.
However – while Sonja’s conflict between following her heart and her head at the core – there is a certain amount of obstacles being resolved by pure chance, weakening the feeling that her internal struggle is key to a pleasant outcome.
This is especially clear in the consequences of Sonja’s decision to go to Montreal rather than work. Although there are occasional references to this not being great for her career, they are only in passing. Ultimately, with no time spent on establishing the downside, the reader has no feeling that honouring commitments might be worth considering.
As with the plot, Sonja is at her core a classic of modern romance: a young woman who has mislaid her joi de vivre somewhere on the path to career success. However, she has also received the same skilled tuning, creating a character the reader can identify with but not perfectly predict.
Rather than follow the common romantic style of having both lovers as point-of-view characters, all the narration is from Sonja’s viewpoint. So the reader is provided only with the evidence she notices. Although it never feels as if they will not ultimately end up together, this makes Chad more engaging as the reader does not know his true motivations or which of them will need to change to reach the happy ending.
I did not dislike this book; however, I found the message that if you just do what you want it will all work out fine to be a little saccharine. I recommend it for readers seeking modern light romance.
A stressed, workaholic woman leaves her cocoon of routine and embarks on an impetuous trip to find herself sitting in a coffee shop in Montreal. Sonja Fines, the protagonist of the story is yet again buried under her work load while everybody else in her office is making plans for July 4th weekend. On an impulse she misses an important meeting and flies to Montreal. Spontaneity has not been her forte and she is still reeling from the shock when, enter the hero : Chad Miller, a laid back & charismatic chap. Things click between Sonja and Chad and there seems to be an instant chemistry. High is one of those chick lit books, which is not high on mush but mostly concentrates on the subtle sides of romance. The author also introduces the readers to Montreal and everything about the place screamed romantic. She doesn't bore the readers with in-depth geographical details, but draws a breathtaking picture on the delicate things in Montreal. The coffee shops, the roads, the people, the French influence. After reading the book, I have this huge desire to visit Montreal. True to the title of the book, its a love story between two caffeine lovers. It also is a book about Sonja's self discovery. She thought she loved her life and job in Manhattan. However, the impulsive trip and her feelings towards Chad makes her realize a lot more about her life. It's a book where girl meets boy and also meets a new side of herself she didn't know existed. The rapport between the characters were very realistic. Conversations had a sense of fluidity to it. It didn't feel forced upon. The readers would feel for the duo. Few scenes were a lil bit on the 'too good to be true' side, but then I can be a cynic. So, we will flow along, yea? High focused mainly on the small yet huge things in life and love. That's what I loved about it. A feel good, dreamy and easy read.
P.S: I loved the cover. The brown coffee beans against the yellow background. It reminds me of peaceful early mornings and a nice cup of steaming coffee. The author being a graphic designer, designed the cover.
This was a cute love story detailing the journey of a workaholic woman who suddenly finds herself escaping to Canada and falling for a man she meets over coffee. Though I enjoyed the book, there were several times where it felt too much like a travel guide to Montreal. I was more interested in the interaction between the two characters, but the author, at times, seemed more interested in talking about all the interesting points in the city. However, overall, it was a cute story with a truly lovely ending.
I had to go back to my bookshelf and read HGH again. It is an amazing novel that speaks to the hearts of readers from all generations. The life challenges of the protagonist are simply relatable to the different stages in our lives.
