If you liked The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, you’re gonna love it’s follow up, “The Legend of Luther Strode”. Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore ramp up the ultraviolence in this one and it’s SICK. Hard to believe if you’ve read Vol. 1. (Which you definitely should prior to pickin’ this one up or reading this review.)

description

Luther’s matured passed the Peter Parker or Dave Lizewski characterizations of the last collection in the five years since the end of the first book and is more a combination of Frank Castle and the Wolverine here. Luther also looks like he’s been hitting the Dbol hard between volumes. He’s a fuckin’ monster in this book. Boy’s gonna need it too, because he’s got his hands full in this one.

description

As was noted in the first volume, Luther’s not the only one to have read “The Hercules Method” and the others that have are out to rein him in. He’s been a busy boy since the end of the first book and there’s some folks out there that are none too happy about it. As to who and why, Jordan starts to shed a little more light on what’s going on with that as well.

description

My girl Petra’s back with some fresh ink and a new perspective. What her agenda is and whether or not she’s still wet for Luther remains to be seen. Petra remains the foul-mouthed, wise-ass I loved from the first book though. Appreciated that.

description

Tradd Moore goes insane and illustrates the shit outta Jordan’s script. Tradd enthusiastically brings all the ridiculous carnage to life as Luther rampages from page to page. Felipe Sobreiro continues to pump the color into Moore’s kinetic bloodbath in this collection as well. Somebody get Felipe some more red ink, he’s gotta be runnin’ low.

description

So if you loved vol. 1, what are you waiting for? If you thought The Strange Talent of Luther Strode was over the top, just keep on going. This one’s even crazier. And for me, that’s a good thing.

I’m sure there aren’t many people picking up this one who won’t have read the first book in the series - The Strange Talent of Luther Strode - but if you haven’t, go and read that before reading this. This second book, The Legend of Luther Strode, starts off at a bloody sprint and keeps going faster and faster until the utterly mental whirlwind of red destruction that is the finale - there is no room for getting to know the characters or finding out what Luther and Petra are all about, it’s all just non-stop, eyeball burning action from start to finish and new readers are bound to be lost.

Legend takes place five years after the first book and Luther has continued his crusade against crime while the crooks he’s antagonising turn to shadier people to help them stop him. Petra has been hunting Luther down as he attempts to find redemption from the deaths of everyone around him he believes he caused in the first book. Meanwhile the strange group of similarly talented people Luther is now a part of - the kind of talents which allows someone to possess superhuman strength, speed, and resilience - are unhappy with Luther’s activities and send not one, but two characters in an effort to stop him.

If the first book was compared most often to Kick Ass for being about a highschool kid who becomes a superhero (an incorrect comparison anyway as Luther actually gets superpowers rather than a green and yellow scuba outfit - though Kick Ass is a very violent comic though also less so than Luther Strode), the second book has more in common with Dragonball Z - albeit for adults, definitely not kids - for its epic superpowered fights and near-constant action. And while superhero comics that mainly feature just action is something I usually dislike, writer Justin Jordan and artist Tradd Moore manage to create such original action sequences with such remarkable characters, and with actual life or death stakes rather than the usual draw-no-one-dies results of Marvel/DC superhero fights, that it’s genuinely exciting to read and almost impossible to put the book down until the fight’s over.

Luther’s somehow able to catch bullets in his muscles and combats an opponent’s knife attacks by sinking the blades into his fists! In one sequence where it seems he’s down and out, he spits out a tooth like a bullet at his enemy! The action in this book is just ridiculously awesome. That’s really the beginning of what you can expect to see here - just look at the cover. That’s the whole book basically! And the action gets more and more interesting as the story goes on.

Luther’s new enemies are an interesting pair. The Falstaffian figure Binder, one of the group of immortal-like superpowered beings like the Librarian from the first book who at first appears to be an enemy but also seems to be trying to help the troubled Luther understand what he’s become; and the pitch black, pure evil Jack. This dude is an S&M mummy Jack the Ripper cosplayer turned up to 11. What he does in the mall at the end is insane and gives the seemingly invincible Luther a helluva run for his money in this book, showing his vulnerabilities and coming close to killing both him and Petra at different times in the story. Both are terrific characters who’re hugely entertaining to see in action and all the while I was wondering whether Luther would beat them or whether they’d live to see another day or become an ally (this thought pretty much exclusively applies to Binder - Jack was never going to be redeemed).

Tradd Moore’s art continues to impress, bringing Jordan’s hyper-violent script to lavish life with a mix of panel layouts ranging from the traditional 9-panel grid for talking scenes to wide panels for the action, and a mixture of dynamic shots for different fights. I love how he presents situations to the reader, knowing when to pull back and show the layout of a room or floor of a building before zooming straight in for a close up on the action. It involves the reader a lot more if they know what the scene layout is like, especially when the characters use it in the close-ups - so few artists know how to involve the reader in the action! It’s also refreshing to read an action comic that eschews splash pages that tend to get overused in superhero fights - the only splash page here is the one where Luther finally kisses Petra. The art and colours are really something. I’d compare it to another comic if I could think of any artist whose work comes close to Moore’s style but I can’t - the man is an original.

Jordan’s script is incredible. Fresh and energetic, imaginative and mysterious, he gives out enough story to sustain the book before gleefully plunging into the most insane action you’ve ever seen. Luther remains a fascinating character, brooding and troubled but not overly so and not without reason, given the events of the first book, whose quest for redemption is engaging and sympathetic. Petra is a great character too and I love that she plays a big part in the finale - she’s not superpowered like the other main players but it doesn’t stop her standing by her man, guns in hand, ready for the last stand. That last shot in the book is indicative of the story - it’s not about Luther, it’s about Luther and Petra.

Luther Strode is such an entertaining comic. If you enjoy dark stories with hyperviolence - and I mean it, if you’re at all squeamish or dislike overly bloody material, stay the hell away from this book! - then you need to get down with this one. It’s just great, it really is. Art, writing, characters, story, it’s all here and it’s all quality. Luther Strode is one of the best original comics to appear in the last couple of years and one of the jewels in Image’s crown. Read it, guys, you won’t regret it!

Strode returns and fights TWO super-bad-guys this time. On every. Single. Page.

There's almost no story. A crime boss hires people to kill Strode, then becomes irrelevant. The whole trade is a gallery of ultra-violent art, with a little promise at the end of more to come.

The illustration is worse this time around. The hero's hair, which used to be a blond mop, now looks like a plate of spaghetti.

And why design a hero that heals from everything, and can also dodge everything, and is also everything-proof? That's like making a hero who can fly and also jump super-high and also levitate. This book should be called The Legend of Redundancy Man.

This second volume maintains the same premise of the first, introducing (or re-ontroducing) characters that support action and ultraviolence, exactly as expected by the target audience.

Some other patron at my public library actually put in a request for this book, so I had to either read it or return it sight unseen.

I'm not sure this book would've worked as well as it did without knowing Jordan's premise before reading. He lays out a proposition in his intro that goes something like this: once a hero has everything taken away from him, and doesn't relate to anyone on the planet, what would it take to redeem him? That's an interesting question to me (at least, based on where the previous volume left off), so I was definitely willing to give Jordan & Tradd some leeway to explore this - despite the bad reviews I've read.

We get a very different plot than the first book, if the feel (hyper-violent, straight to the point) is not dissimilar. Petra is still sassy and savvy, Luther is now completely focused and sociopathic, and we have legions of people trying to tame Luther for various vague reasons.

While there's no more of the sweetness for a wimp getting to kick the asses of his bullies, there's still some hyper-kinetic fun in the way the creators give us front row seats to some fun if bloody and unrelenting action. And unfortunately, the biggest complaint I have about this book is that the ultra-violent fighting and bloodletting takes up so much room that (a) it gets boring and (b) it takes away time from anything like legend-building, character development or reflection.

I mean, I get that this is a tale with a single purpose, but they could've saved an issue or two in its telling and not lost any room for the important points.

In any event, it was kinda fun and it hints at another book or two that might be fun to see where the villains go from here.

The art: incredibly evocative of the terror, chaos and sheer unbelievably efficient violence wrought by Strode. It's so super-exaggerated and faithful to that style that it creates an aesthetic all its own (aside from the copious blood). I'm reminded of the Ba/Moon brothers in Casanova, and the facial work in Chew or Atomic Robo. I'm not entirely sure I'm a fan of the sharp lines exaggerating people's facial features, but it's good art and effective (if a bit stylistically distracting at times).

I'm on the fence about whether this is a three or four star read for me. On the one hand the action is almost balletic - lots of little surprising moments, many well drawn and very stylised. On the other hand, I really wish it didn't feel like the story was repeating itself - how many times can a man be crippled in gnarly ways, then magically heal a few panels later, before you no longer believe anyone's truly in peril? I didn't feel that invested in Luther or the grizzled cop, though I liked the glints of personality in Petra and Binder.

In the end I'm gonna round it down for the lack of feeling invested in the protagonist. If Jordan had confessed this was secretly Petra's story I might be better inclined, but as it is I'm not compelled to seek out the next inevitable blood-soaked mop of a book.

Another fun amd riveting installment in this series. One problem i do have is I'm not the biggest fan that they're introducing a supernatural element in this series, but it didn't ruin my enjoyment.

Also this series has to have the most amount of blood i have ever seen

More bloody fights than you can shake a stick at. It feels that half of the comic is nothing but superhumans cutting and punching each other into oblivion. Their eventual deaths don't feel consistent with the seeming immortality they display after sustaining some seriously gruesome wounds, though I suppose it's impossible even for them to survive a beheading. If it worked for the Highlander, it works here. The story is just as weak as in the first volume and the artwork has devolved into something even more exaggerated and cartoony, but it's still a fun read.

Five years later Luther has resurfaced and he is on a killing spree. Michael Hill's criminal organization has been trying to kill him, but failing miserably. After managing to get Luther's former love interest Petra on the team, their luck might be turning.

Comic book murder-porn, spectacle and masterstroke, Luther Strode rolls through a fantastic second volume. This can be a confusing one, because the titles of the books are different, but this is volume two of the Luther Strode books, the effective sequel to "The Strange Talent of Luther Strode". Make sure you read that first.

Anyway, the incredible, slasher/hero concept of the book propels volume two on blood-fueled engines. Legend is a non-stop thrill-ride, escalating the violence with every fight scene, dragging us deeper into Strode's mind, as the isolation of murder envelopes him. His arc is a simple one, but we get a lot of payoff between him and Petra, sating my ever expanding character-lust. The whole book is a visual spectacle, with Tradd Moore's art at all new, murder-ific highs. The narrative is well executed, with meaningful twists and turns, all playing into the still mysterious mythos of Strode's talents.

There's a bit of cornball dialogue, and I failed to connect with the human elements of the book, both of which I felt were stronger in the first title. Those are the only shortcomings I see though, and this is an easy recommend for anyone who read and enjoyed the first one.

Despite the lapses and silliness on Strode's backstory, I can't help but fall in love with Tradd Moore's graphic illustration. Though it's just a comicbook, I've felt the action inside the pages, from each panel to another, like in an I-Max theater. The violence of Moore's artwork is just downright awesome. And this book is turning out to be a trilogy I suppose, will be waiting for the Legacy of Luther Strode for more Moore's hardcore action.

The second part of the series introduces some new players in the mythos but is lacking story. Jordan's dialogue is still good but its essentially a six issue long fight scene. Moore's art isn't for me and at times panels were indecipherable. Overall, an interesting idea but the book isn't finding its mark with me.

This sequel to The Strange Talent of Luther Strode literally eschews any pretense at having a deep meaningful story in favour of being about one thing and one thing only: the fine art of extreme action cinema fighting. The plot is as follows: Five years after the events of the first book, Luther lives in solitude, hunting down and massacring criminals in his spare time. A crime boss gets the hot idea to try and take him down, little knowing that he's merely fodder for another bad dude's plans. Petra's back. A teensy bit of Strodian mythos is expanded upon, there's a fuck-ton of crazy fights and Ichi the Killer-esque deaths. That's about the sum of it. Also, Tradd Moore does some crazy shit in here. I'd love to see this adapted into an Adult Swim series by Genndy Tartakovsky or something.

Buuuutt it's unfortunately a bit slight? I mean, it feels like the span of action covered in this entire volume could have fit into two issues. It does give it something of a more cinematic feel, as much is devoted to long set-piece-y confrontations. But the story beats are all pretty familiar. Luther kills bad guys. Bad guys discuss how to deal with Luther. More bad guys are killed by Luther. Stronger bad guys are called in. Rinse, repeat. It's all very Hokuto no Ken, Riki-oh. But then I guess that's probably the fucking point, since Justin Jordan's obviously watched a mountain of scuzzy hyper-violent action flicks. Luther Strode fits pretty comfortably into that pantheon of stories about bursting muscles, one-on-one battles, and extreme gore.

I'll probably read volume 3. I'll be amazed if whatever happens in it is too surprising, but I think I'll know what to expect. A quick hit of the ol' ultraviolence with some crazy-good-crazy art to go along with it. While I kind of wish Jordan were more ambitious with this plot in terms of worldbuilding and characterization, not everything needs be a metatextual work of uber-genius. Sometimes a book just needs of a lot of aesthetically-pleasing eye-gouging, limb-ripping, and chainsaws to warm the cockles of my heart.

Didn’t enjoy this as much as the first one, something in the art style just didn’t work for me this time, like the movement in the fight scenes and Luther’s ever changing size and muscle. Although more of a storyline it just didn’t keep my attention as much as the first volume.
