Who is Parker Blue? Well, I live in Colorado Springs with my dog, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Val's part-hellhound mutt, Fang.

I hate writing bios so that's all you're gonna get. Okay, okay. Instead of more boring bio stuff, how about some of my likes and dislikes?

Stuff I love, in no particular order:

- The color red—a bright, orange-red just makes me happy.
- Shiny things. I must have been a magpie in a previous life.
- Making shiny things. Love to bead!
- Dogs—they love you unconditionally and are great at stress relief.
- Numbers. So sue me—I love math. It always makes sense.
- Chocolate. Come on, that's a no-brainer.
- The mountains of Colorado. Their awe-tastic beauty is good for the soul.
- Diet Coke. What can I say? I'm addicted.
- Reading. Escaping into a cool new world someone created out of their imagination? It doesn't get much better than that.
- Oh, yeah. And writing. Making up my own world out of random bits of my twisted psyche is the best!

Things I'm not so crazy about, besides the obvious things everyone hates (war, pestilence, famine, you know the drill):

- Blogs that dis other people. What's up with that?
- Going to the dentist. Need I say more?
- Politics. Big yawn.
- Television shows that ask people do stupid things for money then make fun of them.
- Seafood. Ick. Just...ick.
- Yard work. I need lawn gnomes!
- Writing bios. Enough already!

As for the drawings...no, they don't really resemble me much, but this is what I figure Parker Blue ought to look like, kind of geek chic. Torie Fox drew them for me—isn't she fabulous?

Pretty good. It was a bit too short for my liking but there was still a fair amount of insight into Shade's past.
Shade's novella didn't make me like him though, he turned into a douche in the last book and knowing about his crappy past didn't change my feelings.
I don't recall him ever talking about his family in previous books which must have been down to his erased memories. I'm hoping Shade's dad is still alive and well, and that his sister will make an appearance in the future — surely she should have forgiven him by now?

A short story about Shade, the shadow demon

This fascinating short story provides fans of the Demon Underground series with a chance to enter the point of view of Shade, the beautiful, sad shadow demon who has been the romantic interest of the series' heroine, Val, for three of the four books so far.

Shade is 16 at the time of this story, four years before the events of the first four books, in which Val is 18 and Shade is 20.

At the time of this story, Shade is known by his birth name, Shawn. He is living with his father and his twin sister Sharra. His father's nickname for Shawn is "Shadow Boy," and Sharra is his "Sunshine Girl," so called because of Shawn/Shade's melancholic nature and Sharra's sanguine disposition.

Their father is one-fourth shadow demon and the siblings are one-fourth shadow demon. A distinguishing trait of the shadow demon's appearance is swirling energy clouds obscures that their face. It only becomes visible if a non-shadow demon touches them, and ever since their mother ran off a while back, none of them have been able to see each other's faces.

Shade/Shawn and his family have always lived an isolated life because of their inability to blend in with regular humans, but since their mother left, life has been horribly lonely. Shade/Shawn is depressed and angry, and finally one day he can't take it anymore. He confronts his father, and their argument releasea his and his father's powers in a way that brings down disaster on their family.

Shade is one of my favorite characters in this exciting YA, urban-fantasy series, and Parker Blue has offered in this story a terrific opportunity to get to know him more deeply. His is a very tragic family history, and this story deepens even further my interest in Shade and his further adventures in this wonderful series.

These are the books so far in this series, with Forget You listed first because it is a prequel:

Forget You (Demon Underground Series, Prequel)
Bite Me (Demon Underground, #1)
Try Me (Demon Underground, #2)
Fang Me (Demon Underground, #3)
Make Me (Demon Underground, #4)

I rate this story as follows:

Hero: 5 stars
Subcharacters: 5 stars
Urban Fantasy Plot: 5 stars
Fantasy World-Building: 5 stars
Writing: 5 stars
Overall: 5 stars

Libro corto. Siento que explica un poco a Shade, pero no lo justifica por cómo actuó con Val en el libro anterior.

**MINOR SPOILERS**
This book is a prequel short story that is part of the Demon Underground series. It is not even a novella and I found that it was interesting but definitely not a standalone. You would have to go into the series from here or come back to it.
It was also quite sad. It is about a family of 3 that is part shadow demon that faces a pivotal moment that changes all of their lives. Despite the length, the author did a decent job of drawing the characters and making the events meaningful.
I got the story free on amazon. I believe it was a way to introduce an author and to draw you into the series. I am not planning to continue reading the series so I was left feeling like the story was incomplete.

This is the prequel, to the series that's about Shade, the shadow demon. I would probably say you should read Book 5 first, because you are finally introduced to some of these characters that will make more sense after book 5. But you could read it by itself with no trouble.

I always knew that there was something going on with Shade. He had to have some kind of crazy past. And now I know. And now my mind is blown! I now know exactly why he pushed Val away, though I still blame him for being stupid, as he's probably going to lose Val for that stupidity. But now it all makes much more sense. He's 16 in this story, so though he's old enough to know better, he's also a teenage BOY. In the present story, he's no longer in his teen years. He also has a real name, which is not Shade. He also has a family.

His world is blown up when he makes a bad decision and loses his cool. He then understands exactly why he can't have emotional reactions. Ever. It's quite an emotional story for a short story. Wow. I was not expecting this, what happened. All I can say is that if you are a fan of the Demon Underground series, you MUST read this one. You will be amazed, and you will have that open mouthed shocked reaction that I did.

This entry in the Demon Underground series is a 31-page short story that serves as a prequel to the series. While it was chronologically written between the fourth and fifth books of the series, its action takes place approximately 5 years prior to the opening of the first book.

Since this prequel was offered free and I was just beginning the series, I chose to read it first, rather than in chronological order. After reading it, I believe that choice is going to help me appreciate the character of Shade far more in those first four books than I might have otherwise.

The prequel consists of 3 scenes, covering a time period of approximately one week. In those scenes we are introduced to Shawn, who is only 16 years old, along with his twin sister, Sharra, and their father. And in those few short pages, we witness two of the three events in his life that change Shawn into Shade and forever alter who he is into who he becomes.

Parker Blue has written this short story in a prose that is clear, crisp, dramatic and intense. It brought tears to my eyes and further enforced a tenet that I have always believed: “Because I say so” is NEVER the right answer.

Ok so this was a back story into Shade's life, which is pretty specific, and it's a definite must read to not be confused in the following book. But it was nice to see how Shade became Shade, and it also will explain a lot of how and why Shade is now. I'm not really into the short stories in between main books, but this one, is a must read and like I said before, it will keep you from getting lost is "Dare Me".

I liked the short story that gives you more of a perspective into what a shadow demon actually is and what they can actually do if they do get out of hand. Great little novella especially for one of my favorite characters in the book. Too bad that he doesn't remember his family until he wants too.

Merged review:

For fans of Shade and interested in knowing what really happened in his past, this is the novella to read. You get the full story here.

A a prequel to the Demon Underground series, this very short story explained a lot of why "Shade" (aka, Shawn - Shadow Boy) is the way he is, why he helps people, even if it is on a subconscious level since he saw the Lethe. I hope in Dare Me we get to see Sharra - Sunshine Girl and see if she still blames Shawn for the demise of their father. I really like this series a lot.

I am glad that I read this one after Dare Me, otherwise it would have spoiled a big moment in that book. That said, this one broke my heart, I hated how the family was torn apart, hated it even more that hot heads made it worse.

Some good insight into Shade's past. I'm a bit nervous that this is a further set up for him to be an even bigger ass to Val in the next book since she is now the Paladin. Oh well, if so, Austin is quite yummy and not nearly as moody.

Nice little snippet about Shades early life and how he came to live in the demon underground. This novella also includes the first few chapters of "Dare Me."
