Barney Thomson is a restless soul in search of a quiet town in which to settle. He thinks he might just have found it in Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae and life can at last bring him some peace. Or, at least, it might have done, but for the dead body at the bottom of the stairs, the ghost tormented for all time to go to the bathroom, the evil Chinese businessman, the disturbing package in the freezer, the mysterious cathedral, Barney's deaf, mute, hunchbacked assistant, the ancient society protecting a 2,000-year-old secret, the Vatican spies, the intended murder, the curious collective of ninety-year-old men looking for Robbie Williams' haircuts, the promiscuous vicar named Judas, the rookie exorcist, the volatile cheese sandwich, and the very outside possibility of Armageddon. And, at the end it all, twelve men will meet around a table and the very future of humanity will be decided. Either that, or they will go home for a cup of tea and a plate of chips.
THE LAST FISH SUPPER is book 5 in the Barney Thomson series.
’You know there’s this weird thing in town?’ He said. ‘The Brotherhood.’ She said. ‘Yeah, so? It’s just a joke. The Masons or something, isn’t it? Who gives a shit?’ 'Yeah, yeah,' said Romeo, 'whatever. No one really knows what it is but we all know it goes on. They skulk around the lot of them and we all think it's a joke and they think that that's what we think, so they don't care. They cover it up with talk of card games and charity and rolling up their bleedin' trouser legs and all that shit but there's weirder stuff than that goes on up at the big house. Fuckin' weirder stuff than that.'
If you ever thought what it might be like if some of the zaniest world comedy writers rewrote some of the James Bond (or Underdog) end-of-the-world and Dan Brown secret religious orders and conspiracies, along with barbershop insights and humor, stop and read this book.
All Barney Thomson wants is a quiet life: I very much doubt that he’s ever going to get one. Not as many laughs as earlier outings but still worth a read
Yet another great Barney Thomson book. This series seems to be the plaything of the author, I think he adds elements from whatever genre takes his fancy.
The Last Fish Supper is the book The DaVinci Code could have been, if Dan Brown was a better and more humorous writer,
Had to list the omnibus of seven separately due to the 2015 challenge. Review for the Omnibus:
Admittedly, it's perseverance that got me through all seven books. The first three, though interesting, were not very captivating. The last four were more flowing and well paced. Overall a good alternative read.
Another decent addition to the Barney Thomson series. Funny in places but also stupid in places. If you've got this far in the series this won't dissapoint but definately not the best of these books.
4.5stars - the world of Barney Thomson is a deliciously dark place. Highly entertaining, witty and well written. These books should be way more popular!
