So I was drawn to this by the title - I love Devon - in a charity shop. Turns out it's really a teenagers book from the 1960's, but it's a cute story about two women who give up their day jobs and follow their dream of running a small farm in Devon. It all sounds very fun and romantic in today's busy day and age.

A great sunny afternoon re-read. (I bought my copy in 1971.)

I was given this book way back in 1966! I recalled thinking it was a great read for me back then with an idea that girls could do what they want, quite the opposite of how I was being raised. So it was for nostalgic reasons together with a need to begin sorting through my now large library that made me pick it up and wonder what would I think if it now! It's actually an incredibly forward thinking story about strong caring independent young women. It's still a good story today and I enjoyed the nostalgic idealism with the scattering of social injustices thrown in. The way the two young women stick out the flood in such a matter of fact and practical way was interesting v given that most adventure stories of the time had boys rescuing 'damsels' in distress as the only option! So while reading this book wasn't the great read I'd choose for myself today it did set me thinking about how rare this type of story for girls was back then!

What a sweet surprise! I took this book from the shelf because it was old, the perfect size, and the pages thick and browned with age.

It was a quick read (for me, a slow reader) and the story was engaging, sweet, and uplifting, but not without conflict. If the author had not been so eager to show off so much of her farming knowledge I would have given it five stars.

Maybe I should read more older books like this. I am wondering if there is a sequel!

One of my Mum's Sunday School prize books from the 1960's, it's still a great read today. I loved it growing up with two sisters who dislike London and love the Countryside, it's an interesting farming 'career' read, with some adventure and a touch of romance thrown in. I was suprised how capable a 17 and 19 year old were living and working in London by themselves then farming. Makes you want to move to Devon (except not a flooded part!)
