Rita Bradshaw was born on 1949 in Northampton, England, where she was educated as a good Christian. She met Clive, her husband, at the age of 16 andnow the magic is still there. They have three lovely children, Cara, Faye, and Benjamin, and have always had a menagerie of animals in the house, which at the present is confined to two endearing and very comical dogs who would make a great double act on TV! The children, friends, and pets all keep the house buzzing and the food cupboards empty but Helen wouldn't have it any other way. She still lives today in Northampton with her family. Although having enjoyed some wonderful holidays abroad she has never been tempted to live anywhere else, although she rather likes the idea of a holiday home close to the sea one day.

Being a committed Christian and fervent animal lover she finds spare time is always at a premium, but long walks in the countryside with her husband and dogs, meals out followed by the cinema or theatre, reading, swimming, and having friends over for dinner are all fitted in somehow. She also enjoys sitting in her wonderfully therapeutic, rambling old garden in the sun with a glass of red wine, (under the guise of resting while thinking of course!)

For years, she was a secretary. She began writing in 1990 as she approached that milestone of a birthday 40! She realized her two teenage ambitions (writing a novel and learning to drive) had been lost amid babies and hectic family life, so set about resurrecting them.

Her first novel was for Mills and Boon and was accepted after one rewrite in 1992 as Helen Brooks, and she passed her driving test (the former was a joy and the latter an unmitigated nightmare!) She has written 50 novels as well as several sagas as Rita Bradshaw.

Since becoming a full-time writer she has found her occupation one of pure joy and often surprised when her characters develop a mind of their own but she loves exploring what makes people tick and finds the old adage "truth is stranger than fiction" to be absolutely true. She would love to hear from any readers care of Mills & Boon.

Here we have Brooks' favourite plot: h with A Tragic Past, who falls in love with the H but pushes him away because she can never trust anyone again.

The h's past is quite tragic, though, so the H is very patient with her and gives her time to get to know him. Similar to the H in A Suspicious Proposal, the H here has a business contract with the h, but he gets her to go on dates with him and opens up about his own past to her, making himself vulnerable. The h is very tortured and wonders what she is doing, but she is drawn to the H and finds it hard to say no to him. However, I have to say that this book is totally misnamed because they don't sleep together at all. There's plenty of kissing and caressing but it always stops just when it's about to get interesting.

The Grand Drama that causes the h to have her epiphany is a bit too much, but I liked that once she had that epiphany she held on to it with both hands even though she got a bit shaken by the canary. And the H's response to her was so sweet.

This was very similar to the previous Helen Brooks story I read. Basically, our heroine, Rosalie, has had a tragic and abused life and is completely unwilling to put her trust in a man again. And she's super wary of them and turns them away at the first show of any interest. But she isn't able to turn Kingsley Ward away. He's attracted enough to put up with her prickly demeanor and cool reserve. And after putting in as much effort as he has, he's not too terribly surprised to realize that it's love that keeps him trying to break through her armor, not just lust. But as much as Rosalie comes to love and trust Kingsley, she still doesn't trust him enough to give him her heart for keeps.

So even though this was written in 2004, it honestly felt like it had been written back in the 80's or something. There's an overall feeling of nostalgia here, as both Kingsley's and Rosalie's demeanors and attitudes are anything but modern. There's also some rather dated language, like when Kingsley ends up with some of Rosalie's lipstick on his lips, she tells him to wipe it off if he doesn't want to be mistaken for a "very modern man." Not sure it that's a reference to a gay man or a trans woman, but it felt old fashioned. I usually really enjoy heroes like Kingsley, since they have so much patience and dedicate it to pursuing one woman, but there was one or two factors that made me like him less. One was his determination, at least initially, just to get her into bed. He wasn't smitten from the start, he was just in lust from the beginning - that turned into love later. But more than anything though was that refusal to listen to the heroine and what she wanted. He insinuates himself into her life and tries to learn about her past in a very controlling way, as though he knows better what she wants than she does. Rosalie was very prickly and very stubborn about Kingsley, but I didn't dislike her. I think the other HB story I read was more to my taste, but this definitely has the angst and the UST going for it.

As mentioned by another reviewer, this book is most certainly not your "fall in Lust, have sex, get pregnant" trope of recent HPs, but it is by no means anodyne.

I love that the relationship builds over a few months and that the H was neither a jerk nor a meanie and I loved that they were both mature, self-respecting individuals. The book also had an interesting twist as we got to hear the POV of some of the supporting characters. All the characters were 3 dimensional and leapt off the pages... I mean I felt like I knew them and could visualize being present in their lives. Oh, it was just a good, wholesome, yet beautiful love story and I will be reading this again.

Very dull. The heroine kept rejecting not only the hero but change and didn't evolve as the plot went on. I am all for survivalist heroines but she didn't come off strong. The hero had no reason to like the heroine but pursued her relentlessly. Not much happened and so you should skip it.

It could have had… you know… a bit of plot instead of just Kingsley somehow feeling all of her true feelings and Rosalie just NOT getting the time to process Miles.
Then again, this is from 2003, and new Harlequinbooks have definitely handled this a lot better.

This book was not aptly named by any means. In fact the whole "mistress" thing was off by a long shot. This book was about a confused woman who had watched her father kill her mother and then take his own life. It was about her going through a marriage at nineteen, only for her husband to abuse her and nearly rape her. It's about her not dating for twelve years and finally finding her own way in the world, instead of treating a man like she was an ice cube, learning to love him.

Despite the subject of the book being so emotionally straining, the book wasn't that good. In fact I found the whole thing to be insipid. I wasn't really impressed but I didn't particularly enjoy it as well. Such is life I suppose.

DNF, I found this irritating (I could not understand the woman's thought processes at all, it was like a view into an alien's mind) and mildly triggering (the man's invasive and manipulative behavior, particularly how he trade on the social pressure women experience to keep the woman from disagreeing with him when he unilaterally decided to do something/go somewhere/etc). Half-way through I'd had enough.

I didn't really like this one. I know the heroine went through hell and back but she was just to cold and rigid for me. She was a prisoner to her past. It may be insensitive, but it was tedious to get through.

Finished in a few hours. It was a nice read and fairly clean with a bit of suggestion. Very well-described, masculine hero that got my own creative juices churning about how to write mine better. I recommend this read.

Boring. The characters were difficult. The domestic violence storyline was new.
