What if you weren't human, and you lived your life without realizing that what you saw in the mirror, what your friends saw, what your parents saw when they looked at you wasn't real? What if not every face in the crowd was as real as the next—what if some, like yours, were masks? What if you were walking down the street when a stranger dropped a necklace, and when you picked it up you dropped your mask?
Skin Deep follows a group of college friends who are a little more than meets the eye. Angst! Magic! Mythology! It isn't an easy life for the protagonist (and admittedly, she and other members of the group have had a rough time adjusting, each dealing with their situation in their own unique way) but it's a great story for the reader.
A graphic novel about a girl who, shortly after entering college, discovers that she is in fact a mythical beast (a sphinx), and there is a whole world of such creatures hiding behind the woodwork. She then proceeds to get caught up in all manner of intrigue. A collection from the webcomic Skin Deep, this is some of Kory Bing's earliest work, and the art and plotting are somewhat crude in places, but the characters and worldbuilding are very rich.
Love this comic, started reading it online years ago and was ecstatic to help her kickstart this and Exchanges. Since this volume encompasses the entire first story arc you see the art style evolve and change and she slides more into her own and developers this fascinating world. Highly recommended, the background info in the back is totally worth it.
You know that feeling you get when an author gets everything right and makes you feel for their characters? This has that. Plus mythological creatures living in the current day and hiding in plain sight
