I hope it was one of those earliest work of the author. /Because apart from the words chosen for writing, the characters and the plot had no development at all. The plot was jumping everywhere. It felt like I was watching a commercial movie where only the lead character is intelligent enough to solve even simple clues and everybody else is just an useless extra. I mean I get it the author want to show that FBI is desperate for Morgan's help but they basically handed over a dangerous serial killer case to her and the team lead is giving her and taking back the case with same "oh morgan, i know you shouldn't be in the field the next day of your release" (duh). Apart from mentioning who is in the task force, they literally have no part to play. Morgan has anger issues, reckless, does not think through situation, puts herself and derrick in danger repeatedly that you cant help but feel frustrated with her. And the to top it off, after showing all these traits, the head of FBI personally appreciates her and hands the job back to her knowing she has all these problems? Not even a basic psych eval or procedures to rejoin. / Rant over. So if you are looking for a very basic, predictable story so you can have book count, it is for you. Else, dont bother.

I really didn't like this book. I didn't like Morgan, I didn't like Derik, I didn't like Mueller. I liked the dog. Morgan has just spent 10yrs in prison for a crime she didn't commit. Then she gets out and her old partner Derik is waiting to take her home. He also tells her that Mueller would like her to start back at work because the serial killer Samson, the reason she was in prison, had called a halt to his killings and restarted days before she was released. People thought she was his assistant. She is clearly in no fit position to return to work the day she got out of prison and it shows all the way through the book. I skim read it through to the end and still don't like a single person in this book.

Book 12 for 2024. Have you ever read a book that played a certain way in your head? That's this book for me. The main character, a female agent for the fbi, just spent 10 years in prison for a crime she didn't commit. She immediately gets out and is pulled back into the same case where she accused and convicted of helping the unsub. Now, in my mind, when reading her speaking, all I could hear was Agent Clarice Starling's voice. That very monotone, nothing excites me voice. While the book did have some twists, it was a pretty straight read. I also felt this book ended rather abruptly, however, this is part one of a 9 book series. I'm not sure how to get 9 books from this, but I'll at least check out book 2, since I'd like to know how this storyline ends. Regardless if being a quick read, I'd give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5.

First time reading this author and probably will read more in this series. It is full of suspense and mystery and a page turner. Megan has just been released from jail after 10 years of a crime she didn’t commit. She was an FBI agent accused of helping a serial killer. The killings has stopped while she was in jail and have now started again before her release. She has been asked to help solve these killings by her former partner Derik who believed her innocence and AD Mueller who really wasn’t sure of her innocence. I thought this was a good mystery and suspense. I hope to read the next in the series to find out more answers to more mysteries.

3.5⭐️ if I got sent to jail for working on a case I would be very hesitant to go back and work on the very same case. The serial killer was pretty fascinating. I do like how they set up the second book with who framed her. I’ve read terrible set ups thrown in haphazardly at the end so I was certainly pleased with this one.

I downloaded this book for free via googleplay because I needed something to read in-between Christmas/new years days out with the family.

I like how this story opens, it switches the narrative on its head while luring you into a "what happened?" Clues..a federal agent is finally set free from prison after ten years, she wasn't supposed to be behind bars in the first place. Hook,line and sinker.

I did have to re-read a page or few, a few times because I thought if you were arrested and worked for the government that you were legally NOT allowed to work for the government again, innocent or not. Hell, I've applied for government boring desk jobs and criminal charges were one of their many main questions to wether you got interviewed or not.

I think the reason I latched onto this story pretty quick was because it reminded me of the mentalist; Patrick Jane v Red John, pretty sure there was a season where Jane was framed by Red John and had to be benched for majority of the season.

The further I read into this story, I started to realise a lot of "filler" words. They could've been backspaced.

Maybe one too many binges of crime shows has altered my mind and perspective on crime books but since when do cops straight up sound like their accusing a suspect? I thought they questioned "do you know xyz?" Or "you left here at xyz, what made you leave?" Or "you returned at xyz, what made you return?" Not "the murders stopped when you left and started when you returned." That just seems like an odd thing for a cop to say to a suspect who isn't officially a suspect.

As it got closer to the end, the story started to feel a little messy. How'd Morgan know the attacker was a man? How'd Morgan know the attacker was the killer? If she's chasing the attacker in pitch dark than how would she see him especially since it adimits her eyes struggled to see as she regretted ditching the torchlight.

I understand the use of ellipses but at times it started to feel like overkill, I feel like they could've just been backspaced.

Didn’t enjoy this at all.

Morgan released from prison after serving 10 years for murders she didn’t commit. How did they decide that after all that time? What even was the set up that landed her in there in the first place? (Although that will likely be revealed in the 2nd book)

So many unanswered questions like What was the relevance of her dead father’s tax bill? How did they know the name of the killer? How come she didn’t think of the killers why when actually speaking to her inmate ? All very rushed and a lot of nothing.

A favorite author

Blake Pierce is by far one of my favorite authors. His books leave me in awe, with plots that are intense, with none of the "oh puleeease, that could never happen!" that some stories leave me feeling. His characters literally jump off the pages to grab you by the throat, encompass your heart and mind, and leave you breathless at times. Please continue writing, Mr Pierce! You have a great talent that thrills this bibliophile.

Great book

Enjoyed this book very much. I really like the concept for this storyline. Something new. Morgan is one tough cookie after having spent ten years in prison for a crime she didn't commit. Getting ready to read the next book in this series.

Three days before Morgan Cross was released another killing occurred. Her father had died & she moved into his house. Her old partner showed up and then the action began all over again. I rate this a 5.0.

This is a good book

Unjustly Accused

Deception

Agent Cross learns just what deception is and how to handle it. Having spent 10 years in prison for a crime she was framed for, she learned that even that deception was deceiving. Great mystery and great characters.

Best I've read in while. No dead sister haunting the lead characters is a wonderful relief.
Good storyline, well worth reading.
