New stress management tool just dropped 🙏 and it’s the vagus nerve 🙏 I’d call this a worthwhile 200 pages bc it connects all of the dots that populate the online discourse on stress and disease for you with the science and research backed actionable steps to boot. Also kicks off with really great summary of the current medical consensus on how basically all modern stressors are categorized and their effects. So if you’re already into medical stuff that might read a tad basic (excusing the chem chapters), but I personally appreciated reading that information packaged for me by a doctor instead of scrolling online trying to figure it out myself. All in all I’d say this is a trustworthy crash course on where medicine stands right now with trauma/stress that doesn’t skimp but also doesn’t confuse while highlighting an otherwise underrepresented faction of human health that can significantly help mitigate stress. Very eye opening book about how much the VN controls our body. Going to start making some changes in my life for the better now that I have a better understanding how and why.

Fascinating!

I began reading this book in search of information that may help my husband in some way with his multiple health issues. I found that I was indeed not only finding useful things him but for myself as well. This book is literally relevant to everyone. I was so eye opening to me. It breaks down the functions of the vagus nerve to the cellular level. It was easy enough to understand. It gives examples and suggestions for simple exercises that will help restore the VN to a healthier state, and help keep it there. I only wish I had been told some of these things years ago. Some things I knew to do, or not do, but I really didn’t know why. Any clinician will tell you to eat well, get plenty of sleep, exercise, and so on, but no one has ever explained to “the why” to me in this way. I am excited for the new journey me and my husband are about to begin. Please do yourself a favor and read this book.

Great book. The actionable tools are not until the last part of the book although I found the anatomy and in depth review of the vagus nerve to be very interesting as this is not something you learn about in grad school

If you have a medical background, than perhaps some of much of this book will seem like a review. One new tool that I learned about was using TENS unit to stimulate the vagus nerve. For me, the case studies being positioned at the beginning of a chapter might have been more effective than at the end. Concluding chapters with them may drive home a point, but opening with a case study helps me to look for the important points from the start and makes them easier to remember.

This reads very much like a dumbed down medical essay filled with little side stories to try and keep the reader reading. To me a lot of the first half was stuff anyone with a half a$$ed ability to create a decent google search could find for themselves. Second half got better, but I can't say I walked away with too much new information to try and put into practice.

I would recommend getting it from the library. I think I would have been upset if I had paid money for this little book.

A great reminder!

So far, this book is reminding me of what I have done in the past to quiet the vagus nerve. The Doctor explains the nervous system in clear language, while adding ordinary situations that we all have probably encountered. These analogies will drive his point home, and you will understand how to help yourself. If I can do it at 77, there is a definite chance, you will soar. All I see is success!

Good info at the end but the first at least 2/3 was mostly over my head and too scientific. I was looking for more Actionable steps which is my own fault for not reading description more. It wasn't until chapter 14 that it finally had those. However there is a lot of really good information in here about the vague nerve and why it's so important!!

This has a lot of helpful information inside. It is crazy how much our vagus nerve affects our bodies. It is fast-paced and has short chapters, which is helpful in keeping all the information organized.

Very technical in the beginning, but had a better understanding of tactical steps to take in the 2nd half which I enjoyed.

Disappointed. The science part was too complicated for the layperson and the part that was broken down to be easily read, was just common sense.

I am a student of science and still didn’t know a lot about vagus nerve. This book has opened lots of new doors for me to knock, open and learn
