When God calls people to make an impact, feelings of fear, doubt, and insufficiency can often get in the way. In Ask Me Anything, Lord , Heather C. King reminds readers that God can use questions in Scripture to uncover their fears, challenge their thinking, and help them overcome. Exploring some of the encounters God had with people throughout the Bible and sharing her own experiences, King encourages readers to draw closer to God, receive the fullness of His blessings, and boldly move forward. This soul-searching book includes additional resources for personal reflection, group discussion, and life application. Ask Me Anything, Lord is perfect for women’s small group study.
Heather King is a busy-and-blessed wife and mom to four and the author of Anywhere Faith and Ask Me Anything, Lord. You can also find her writing about applying God's Word to everyday life with all its mess, noise, and busyness at http://heathercking.org
We all know that God is Omnipotent, Omnipresent, and Omniscient. When coming across the book "Ask me anything ,Lord", you might ask yourself why? Why, if He knows all, sees all, and is everywhere, why does He ask US questions? That is what author Heather C. King addresses in this book.
Review: People are usually petitioning God for "things" or clarity, or understanding, but God also asks us questions. Most notably when He asked Adam and Eve "Where are You"? It is not that He did not KNOW where they were, the question was one that was to bring them to a place of REFLECTION, and INTROSPECTION. He asked Cain, "Where is your Brother"? He already knew what Cain had done to Able, but the question was one of reflection. That is the underlying premise of this book. God DOES ask us questions and for good reasons. How can we begin to understand a God who can create something as beautiful as a rainbow or as dynamic as a solar system, if we can not even understand our selves? This book is a journey of truth and understanding. This is an awesome book for book clubs because at the end of every chapter there are discussion points. The discussion points are in four categories...
Make It Personal - apply it to and reflect on your personal relationship with God.. Make It Connect - What in the bible does this refer or apply to? Make It Real - Apply this in everyday life. Make it Last - Memory verse and journal prompts.
This gives the discussion group or book club a time to reflect on the chapter they read and helps them to apply it to themselves and their lives. The author did not just give you her journey. This book gives us insight on how to better embrace God's questions and apply them to our OWN PERSONAL JOURNEY. The book has twenty chapters. And the chapters are in groups led by a question from God such as "Where are You", "how Many Loaves Do You Have" or "Do You Love Me". The book is purposed to give you a chance to pause in your busy life and reflect on God's questions and Hopefully bring you closer to Him! For me the BEST part of this book is the discussion points after each chapter. For example, In the end of chapter 20 one of the "Make It Connect" questions is "Do you consider your love for God AGAPE love or PHIILEO love"? That is the kind of question that would be AWESOME in a discussion group! If you NEVER buy another book PLEASE buy this one! This book is rudimentary enough for beginners, those new in the faith, but also relevant enough for seasoned believers.
The book is NOT slow, NOT boring, and NOT a burden to read. This is an EXCELLENT READ! On a scale of 1-10 I give this book a definite 10!
Ask Me Anything, Lord by Heather C. King is such a meaty, thought-provoking book. It is well intentioned and purposed in its focus of "Opening Our Lives to God's Questions." King's words, shared thoughts, and personal vignettes do well in teaching and facilitating examination. Her format is precise and comprehensive. Her requests, challenges, study helps, and Scripture citations were plentiful and layered.
While reading this book, I could easily imagine myself sitting across from King having a heart-to-heart Bible discussion. I am not talking about a light or superficial course, but a slice-and-dice, straight to the heart of the matter kind of discussion. This is that type of book. The kind of book that confronts you just as much as it comforts you. It is the type of book that is strong on teaching and solid on lessons. In my opinion, this is not a quick read book, rather it is a book that must be savored. The messages must be appreciated.
Easily, I could return to this book for a second, third, or fourth reading. In truth, I want to take it and do a class on it. King presented so many things that stirred me up and got me thinking. There is so much within the pages of this book that could be expounded upon.
At the end of the day, I know this, I want a hard copy. An e-copy is good, however, this book is a keeper and certainly it is the kind of book that needs to be held in hand, be marked up with notations, be colored in with highlighters, and be tattered by loving hands that flip, fold, or crinkle its pages.
Rating: 5/5 Recommend: Yes (highly) Bookshelf Worthy: Yes Options: This book could be used in so many ways. It can be used for self-study, as a book club feature, as a Bible class series spotlight, or as a spiritual growth resource for congregants at large. It is an ideal read for women and men. I could see its content being referred to and used as a family discussion conversation starter or as a question facilitator among friends. There are so many possibilities.
A complimentary e-copy of this title was forwarded to me by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The words I have expressed are my own, and they are shared with you in the hope that you might consider reading this book for yourself. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated in any way for my review.
Good Questions God Asked In The Bible...Still Relevant Today
Great book with reflective questions based on the questions that God asked in the Bible. For example, after they sin God asks Adam and Eve "Where are you?". After Cain killed Abel, God asks "Where is your brother?". And God asks Moses at the burning bush, "What's that in your hand?". God doesn't ask these questions because He doesn't know the answers. He asks the questions so that the listener will reflect on their current situation, their relationship with God and where their faith is. King says "God's questions are a way of blessing us. He longs to heal, forgive, and restore. But God can also use questions to search us, know our hearts, and test what they contain".
Heather C. King is a talented new writer. Each chapter is filled with personal anecdotes from her life and is packed with scripture to support her points. She is the mother of four young children so I think young mothers will relate most to this book. She talks about the challenges of raising young children, the busyness of this time, and the way that it leaves her sometimes emotionally and physically exhausted. Each chapter is based on a specific question that God asked of somebody in the Bible....and you feel like you are in the middle of the story. She shows how each question is relevant to us today. King does a great job dissecting the context of those Bible stories and brings a fresh twist to what God is saying in stories that you may have heard over and over. This book is great for personal study but can also be used as a group Bible Study. At the end of each section she has the same four reflective questions to: 1. Make it personal 2. Make it connect 3. Make it real 4. Make it last. This is a book that is easy to read but it is not easy reading. The reader will benefit most by taking time to read carefully through each chapter, reflect on the meaning of the story and look for ways to apply the information to their daily walk.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Discovery House Publishers in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
"Ask Me Anything, Lord" are powerful words to say; Anything is open ended...Anything means oneself going beyond boundaries and comfort zones, but in "Ask Me Anything, Lord", Heather C. King takes readers on a journey that challenges comfort zones, confronts personal fears, both real and imagine, and encourages faith and trust in our Father in Heaven, to convict, to challenge and to encourage the growing believer to follow His ways.
Filled with personal anecdotes, challenging questions that are perfect for both personal study time or in a group study, I really enjoyed reading this book as a wife, a mother and as a woman, who find life, not cookie cutter, but changing each day with new discoveries, challenges and experiences.
I found this book to be endearing and filled with open discussions that really draws the reader out and with life always changing, I think this is something that any woman would enjoy reading when wanting to find herself living life for God to the fullest.
This isn't a fast read.
This isn't an easy, five minute study.
You won't open this book and begin reading and find yourself lightly touching Scripture.
Instead, Heather really takes the reader deep into the Bible with what I felt was a refreshing and humble look at Biblical stories and along with it, an inquisitive, what is God asking of us and what can we discover in His word, the Bible?
I really enjoyed her book, for how each chapter not only leaves one feeling challenged but also with better understanding that God does understand and laying out a foundation of trusting God and with that our lives.
"Ask Me Anything, Lord" is a thought provoking and delightful bible study that a Christian looking to really be challenged, convicted and encouraged should definitely check out and at the end of each chapter, but will leave the reader going, "Lord, Ask Me Anything".
Opening our lives to God's Questions - now that is a loaded sub-title. Yet that is what we each need to do. The thing is this takes a tremendous amount of courage - for when we do this we open ourselves to an honest evaluation of the state of our hearts. In this grace-filled, heart warming book Heather King takes the reader into scripture to explore the questions God poses to those He calls His children. It is these questions that bring us to our knees, drive us back into His arms, lift us out of desperation, cause us to turn back from the snare, and so much more. It is these questions that are pivotal in the lives of believers. The author helps the reader face with confidence and the security of God's love our personal insecurities, fears and worries. Within these pages a reader will find the courage to overcome these things and move to a higher, closer relationship with Christ. I would highly recommend this to anyone seeking a closer more intimate relationship with Christ. For by the end it the reader will find a peace with the questions and be surprised by their own answers to these questions. Thanks to the publisher for this review copy. Posted by Abbie Riddle
I requested this book from the DHP publicity department because I loved the cover and wanted to support a new author by reviewing her work on my blog. I sat down with Ask Me Anything and attempted to read it quickly, but failed.
Ask Me Anything is not a book to be read quickly. The questions that God asked His followers all through the Bible have deep meaning for our daily, modern lives, and they require some thought. Some introspection. And a lot of prayer.
It took me almost two weeks to get through the book, adding it into my prayer and Bible reading time. My copy of the book is now all highlighted and marked up, and I'm adding it my shelf of books that I keep for reference.
This would be a great book for your own daily time with God, or for your small group to read together.
Heather takes a different approach to some familiar stories in the Bible. In each of the accounts, God has asked a question. Heather explores what that question means to us. Fro example, we learn that God always has a plan, even when all seems lost, from the question He asked Hagar. I really liked this book. The teaching is great and the different way of looking at the Bible stories brings a freshness to what is familiar. She has included study questions after each section (nine in all) for personal or group use. See my full review at http://bit.ly/1fjSZSY.
Never noticed so many question marks in the Bible...until this book. Recognizing that the questions aren't for God so they must be for our benefit, this is a huge enlightenment. You begin to look at stories you are familiar with in a whole new light. If you believe that God is all knowing, then why would he need to say to Hagar, "Where are you going and where have you been?" I have shared my personal discoveries from this book with many several people. It has been a blessing to me. Heather King is an excellent writer and makes me think. Gotta love that!
Thought provoking is how I would describe this book! I'm so glad I read it, the author brings to our attention the questions God asks in His Word, a wonderful way to go deeper in your relationship with Him. I was left with a peace in my heart and more awe for God Almighty.
I received a copy of this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I have begun this book by fellow blogger, Heather King, and her insight into Scripture and her relevant analogies in everyday life have me wanting to grab a cup of coffee and sit in the sunspot in my living room for hours.
