Protector is the second book in The Prince's Soulmate series, if you haven't read the first book; Assassin, then look up my review for that book! It's definitely worth reading this series.

I absolutely adore Kit and Talal and their dynamics, insecurities, fears, adventures and the way everything comes together. I don't want to spoil anything but if you're into gay soulmates in a historical era, definitely check this out! It's such an exciting read. 📖✨

Personally I can't wait for the next book! That ending made me scream aishdjaidjf. I need MORE! 😍📚 Go get yourself this series right now!

A savory steamy calm in the eye of the storm

If you’ve read Assassin, you’re already hooked on The Prince's Soulmate series, the MM romantasy love story of Kit and Talal, two soulmates who meet when one tries to kill the other and both learn that they have a unique bond and gift. That book is constant action and intrigue, and this sequel is vastly different, so come in prepared. It's quieter. Calm. Sweetly exploratory and designed to give the reader a breather as former Lindumian assassin Kit comes to terms with his new world and emir of Sudharain Talal learns what it means to support his beloved without stomping all over his sometimes incomprehensible but nonetheless real beliefs about himself and their connection.

While there are moments of intrigue and danger, the focus here is on the developing relationship between the two soulmates, men from vastly different cultures who find themselves wanting nothing more than to forge a life together. What that means is yet to come. But the love is real and beautiful, both in emotions that grow as Kit struggles with accepting his past and all he’s been taught and its contrast with Talal’s far different belief system, and the physical, as the two lovers explore how best to express their pleasure and worship each other’s bodies as part of their soul connection. Visiting the isolated desert village of Dakha gives them a chance to meet another pair of soulmates and get to know each other away from the pomp and circumstance of Talal’s father the sultan’s court, and gives Kit a much-needed place to break down and work through feelings of worthlessness instilled in him by his family and religion since birth. It's both heartbreaking and heartwarming to see him sort through what he believes with every fiber of his being and what he now sees that contradicts what he knows.

And of course a bonus in the book is finally learning Talal’s history with the Ambassador of Zaldovia. IFKYK!

This is a story to be savored on a quiet night or morning without rush, rather than a white-knuckling adventure, though its cliffie ending promises book 3 will be quite the explosion back into danger and high tension. Secondary characters are fully developed and add layers and strong subplots to the story, and the author weaves in an exploration of cultural differences, especially belief systems, as an organic part of the narrative.

The story has an episodic nature, with several incidents that crop up and are resolved one by one without building momentum, and I missed seeing favorite characters from the previous book, such as Kit’s friends in town and Talal’s disgraced best friend. Still, the arc of Kit and Talal’s relationship is strong and carries the story, and seeing them grow together is a lovely and rewarding reading experience, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I suspect some of the things that happen and characters introduced in this book will have impact in the next.

HFN with clear HEA to come; opposites attract/grumpy-sunshine dynamic, culture shock, former enemies turned soulmates and lovers, no cheating or emotional cheating. Another beautiful and engaging read from Katy Hayes. Recommended.

My thanks to the author for the ARC; this is my free and impartial opinion.

Kit doesn’t believe in soulmates, not even when faced with absolute proof they exists, (heresy is after all a crime). Talal knows given time, Kit will embrace their connection. Kit starts to come to terms with his transgressions, even though most of them can be attributed to his upbringing. His and Talal’s blessing of not being able to really die seems both a curse and (yes) a blessing. Strange as it seems as Kit’s feelings for Talal grow, the blessing becomes very welcome.

Being away from the pomp and circumstance of the royal court allowed the feelings between the men to solidify. In the first book they learned what they were to each other. In this book they learned just what their future lives were meant to be and how that bond would shape the men they were becoming. The bravery exhibited by both men just reiterated their strengths.
Their lack of alone time throughout the book gave it a slightly comedic air.

The authors description of Dakha was amazing. The soulmates garden, the sandstorm, sand waterfall, and the cave, brought them all to life.

I enjoyed this story.

I received an arc of this book.

Healing is at the core of this installment of the series, and hurt/comfort fans will find plenty to appreciate in this book, which offers a slower pace and a deeper look at Kit and Talal— not just what their relationship means, but who they are and how they process connection, trauma, shifting expectations, and growth, among other things. The religious dynamics of this universe are pervasive and deeply enmeshed in everything: plot, world building, and character identity— this is historical fantasy given shape by the prices and payoffs of at times rigid, unforgiving, and inescapable faiths, and it does make for some interesting narrative components. It’s easy to empathize with Kit in particular, who comes up against the limitations of black and white absolutes when faced with all the messiness of lived trauma/experience, and I appreciated the chance to see new facets of both characters as they move through the aftermath of their experiences in the first book.

This new story begins where Assassin left off. Kit and Talal are traveling across the desert to meet with another soul mate couple. It is not with out problems but it allows the two to learn more about each other and their blessings. Religion is deeply embedded and Kit continues to struggle to accept Talal’s nut the more he sees and experiences, the more he comes to accept. Their travels result in a lot of changes for Kit and Talal. They learn a lot about each other and themselves while traveling and visiting.

This is the second book in The Prince’s Soulmate series. It has quite a bit of hurt/comfort as well as soul searching and saving people. The action is slower but quite amazing. We really get to know these two and it does not take much for us to fall in love them as well. The ending was quite a surprise and I cannot wait for the next book. I highly recommend this series.

The continuation of Talal and Kit's story turned out to be such a comfort read for me. The second book delves more into the development of their characters and their soulmate relationship. Kit has problems accepting himself and the Sudharian way of believing and loving, but Talal is there every step of the way to help him. The sweetness, the arguments, the frustration and the lust between them is written so well that I couldn't help, but fall in love with them. Something I hadn't really done in the first book.
Don't fret. This is not just a lovestory! Thanks to one disaster/adventure after another, they are not able to be intimate as much and often as they'd like to be. If you ask Talal then all this excitement, that is now part of the their daily lives, is due to his soulmate just attracting chaos. And they're story doesn't end here....
I am so glad that I decided to give book 2 a chance although book 1 hadn't completely convinced me. Now on to book 3!!

I just finished Protector and I was so drawn in I couldn’t put the book down. This is the second book in the series and I’m already waiting impatiently for Book 3. This was Talal’s and Kit’s foray into the desert to visit another soul mate couple and get away from the palace for a while. There they encounter danger, come to the rescue of the town inhabitants, and fall deeper in love. Kit comes to grips with his past and plans a wonderful future with his love, Talal. Their return to the capital brings unexpected guests that threaten their love. Now I am waiting impatiently for the next book in the series to find out what happens next. A wonderful read that just captures your attention and leaves you wondering what happens next. Highly recommend this book and the entire series!

I loved being able to get back into this world. We follow Kit and Talal to a remote city in the desert where they meet another pair of Soulmates. I felt like this book was mostly used to take time for world building and character insights and not so much to bring the overall storyline any further. I liked that very much. It gives the reader the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world the author is building and get to know the main characters better. I look forward to the next book in this series and am excited to see where the story will take us.

This was more of a 'catch your breath' moment for Talal and Kit. Kit has such a tough road to travel because his world view has been so shaken up and his past trauma isn't easily vanquished. This part of their journey was an important building block in their story, I can't wait to see what the future holds for them.

He is happy now he has found his soulmate but they are not so sure about it all. That had been told his religion and the soulmate was not true. Now they need to try to understand what is going on and if it will all go well. They were an assassin and no longer wants to be one. Can they find a new way to live? Will they see he is worthy of it all? How will it all go? See how it will all go for them

This was an intense read for me. I kept hearing the lyrics from South Pacific's "Carefully Taught". Kit feels the soulmate bond with Talal, sees that what he's learned about that and about everything in Talal's religion is false and knows he's changed but still, the old prejudices won't let go. This is one series that hangs around in my head.

Getting to know you…

Book 2 of this series continues with Kit & Talal exploring their new relationship and trying to work out how Kit should fit into his new role. This book was definitely slower than the first, but there’s more sexy to it. Lovely imagery including descriptions of their trip through the desert. I’m hoping that book three hyped up the plot again.

This is another good addition to the series, to me a lot more world building happened but not a lot on the main story arc of the series, story still kept my interest, looking forward to the next book of the series.

Fast-paced and character-driven, I loved the hurt/comfort, torch starved, self-discovery, and soul searching themes in this, and to top it off the plots that's engaging and exciting full of adventure.

If you're a fan of The Prince's Soulmate series, you're probably already hooked on the MM romantic love story of Kit and Talal. Despite their rocky start, the two soulmates quickly discover a unique bond and gift that draws them together. The first book is full of action and intrigue, but the sequel takes a different approach. It's quieter and more introspective, allowing Kit to come to terms with his new life as a former Lindumian assassin, while Talal learns to support him without compromising his own beliefs. This sweet and exploratory book is a refreshing break from the non-stop excitement of the first one.

An amazing continuation of the story! Kit and Talal are confronting their beliefs and assumptions and finding a way to grow together, and I loved how Talal became more supportive of Kit and his struggles. Each character was developed beautifully and made the plot even more interesting and deep. I can't wait to read how their story continues. So great!

4.5 Stars!

This sequel is more slice-of-life and healing-centered compared to Assassin, so expect lower stakes and a lot of character growth. Kit and Talal are an established couple at this point, but there’s still a lot about the two to be explored so the story feels fresh and engaging. It also ends on a cliffhanger, which has me excited for Book 3!

This series feels like stepping into a queer retelling of a Muslim/Christian epic of centuries ago, with adventure, slight mysticism, and divinely-chosen saints. I don’t view this as a religion book, so much as a fantasy historical fiction about two MMCs that are religious, whose god blessed them with unusual power. Even as an atheist, I relate a lot to Kit—I also had to unlearn a lot of black-and-white thinking from a rigid religious upbringing. So I think this story can appeal to people of any religious status.

Kit’s trauma is especially featured in this sequel. Part of his story is about how healing isn’t as easy as asking God to be absolved and fixed, since PTSD and trauma isn’t just prayed away. That part felt incredibly relatable, because I have BEEN THERE. Healing is complicated, and asking others for help is important!

Overall I’m still loving the series, and can’t wait for the next book!
