A vibrant and feminist rewrite of the rules of chivalry in the spirit of Porn for Women and Men to Avoid in Art and Life.Tired of bros and do-nothing daddys, sick of misogynistic behavior in the boardroom, and frankly dreading yet another bachelorette party with a stripper, Dalal Khajah and Josephine Wai Lin founded the service company ManServants Inc. What is a ManServant, you ask? The ManServants are “chivalrous gentlemen for nonsexual service,” who treat women like queens for a day. The ManServant Guide to Modern Chivalry is the gift that every woman with a well-intentioned but clueless husband, boyfriend, guy friend, or son should buy for all the women in their life. From doing laundry, carrying shopping bags, cleaning the bathroom, or watching the kids, this book details how men should treat women in the 21st century. Including short essays, tips, and best practices aimed towards helping a budding ManServant please his lady of leisure, this visually intelligent, stylistically bold, and ardently feminist guide is a perfect navigation for men in the post-#MeToo movement world.
This was mostly cringe, but I had to laugh at it. There's no way you could take it seriously. It was dreadful in my opinion but might work well for very specific small group of people. It just wasn't it for me. The writing style was bland, I was hoping it'd be a novel more than a true "guide". I understand it's a remix to the other guide and a funny attempt, but it just fell a bit flat for me. I think it would've been more cute to blend the guide throughout a true storyline which might've made it more appealing to the audience.
I received this book from NetGalley to read and review. All of the statements are my true opinions after fully reading this "guide".
I thought this was a great little book. The book doesn’t take itself too seriously, which I think is a good thing. Through humor, the book does a great job of avoiding being preachy/a list of demands.
I think the book is equal parts entertaining and insightful. The book appears to draw from people’s lived experiences. This “research” makes the book valuable for anyone curious about what others may think of/or want from men.
Though I think the book does focus on a certain demographic of women/men. I don’t see it as a draw back for the overall message. Personally, I feel that the ideas in the book are worth considering for any women/men. For some it may seem like a no brainer, but for others it may be a completely new set of ideas/perspectives. The disparity in understanding makes this book worth considering.
Now, it’s not a mind blowing book. The ideas are simple enough. But the value of the information, the brevity, clarity, and entertainment value make this a 5/5 for me.
I’d go as far to say that in terms of insight per unit time, this book presents the best deal I’ve ever come across.
I have been following the ManServants company since its inception and have really vibed with its beliefs and values. I thought this book would be a lot more design-focused and tongue-in-cheek. I want to see the final version bc the eARC was pretty shoddy. I’m guessing the design aspects will be fantastic and the copy would have more pizazz but this read as marketing blurbs for the ManServants company. I didn’t really feel like it was a cohesive guide for ManServitude.
It's decent. It reads more as an ad for their company rather than a comprehensive guide as the title claims, or at least implies. But the clueless have to start from somewhere I guess.
