USA Today Bestselling Author K.A. Fox is a proud military brat who has lived all over the world but now calls the Midwest home. When not writing, she can usually be found hiding somewhere with a book and a bit of chocolate or chasing after her own adorable Hell Hound.
"Kingdoms of Curses and Lies" is an anthology collection of 8 young adult and new adult fantasy stories. Perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo, Sarah J. Maas, Stephanie Meyer, and Cassandra Clare. Genres include: Genre: Young Adult, New Adult, Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, and Paranormal Romance.
One thing I did find interesting about this collection is that a lot of these stories are apart of larger series (except for “The Consequence of Belonging” and “Fierce and Lovely”) and I think because of that, there’s a lot of contexts into the world and plot that we aren't getting because the larger series explains it. This is also stemming from my past experiences with anthology collections which are usually one and done stories. And since I may not be able to access the rest of their respective series, I'm critiquing the stories on how well the stories fit the novella format and if I yearned for more. And in some cases, I think I did a little. And I'll add that "Hidden Connections” seemed a little out of place on account of it’s more YA thriller than anything.
I will say that my favorites were “Wells of Magic”, “Shadowed by Prophecy”, “The Consequence of Belonging” and “Fierce and Lovely”.
My review is for Transit by Lilliana Rose part of the Kingdoms of Curses and Lies Collection. Transit is told from both Jol and Adelina’s points of view. Transit is only one of the nine books in the Kingdoms of Curses and Lies Collection.
It may be a short read but it sure does pack a punch. It starts out with a bang and never lets up. It will have you racing to the end to see how Jol and Adelina’s story turns out. You will be rooting for them from the first page.
Jol and Adelina are both on the same train but for different reasons. Jol is there trying to flee the war zone. Jol is a werewolf a fact that humans may not know. A fact that Jol isn’t too keen on them finding out as he is not sure what they will do to him if they do.
Adelina is on her way to help the humans. Adelina is a fae. Helping the humans mean that Adelina will be fighting against her own kind. But what choice does she have in the matter?
Adelina learns of Jol’s faith on the train and what the humans are doing to him. She is mortified at what is happening to him. She wants more than anything to help him escape his captors. Can Adelina help Jol escape? Will they have to work together to stop the humans? Can a fae and werewolf work together without any conflict?

When the Kingdom Cracks by JD Chapman - 4/5 YA - Fantasy - Dark
When the Kingdom Cracks is my first book by JD Chapman and I am ready for book two When the Kingdom Breaks! This is a multi-point-of-view book between Callen and Kieran. Nothing seems to be going according to plan for Callen, he has moved across the country only to learn his mom was murdered. On the hunt to solve his mother's murder, he stumbles into a mythical world that throws Callen for a loop of many unanswered questions. This reads like a young adult book, I do hope the second book has more detailed world-building and growth for the characters because I am rooting for them. All in all, this is a great and easy read and one I would recommend to others.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This looks to be an incredible collection of nine young adult and new adult fantasy stories written by some incredible authors. My review is for Transit by Lilliana Rose. It’s a fantastic quick read where we meet Adelina who is Fae and on her way to help the humans when she meets Jol a werewolf who is travelling on the same train but he is trying to get away from the humans and escape the war zone that is their city. Of course all is not as they believe it to be and they must work together if they are to survive. It’s a great fast paced story as they embark on a dangerous journey full of chaos, magic and so much more!
I even got the next book in a few of the series. At least the ones you didn't have to buy. I only read KU books! There were 2 stories I didn't finish. One because I realized I had read it before. The other because I don't read books about gay characters. The stories got better after skipping tho. I even liked the retelling of a fairytale which I usually don't read. In my experience I don't care for them. So that really surprised me. The dystopian story at the end of the book was good to. I had to get the book to find out what happens next.
My review is for the short story "Transit" by Lilliana Rose.
Very intriguing story that takes off right as you start! A great introduction of the bizarre situation both Adelina & Jol find themselves in, how they meet, and what's expected of them going forward. There is enough information to keep you current, while leaving much to yet be discovered. A small dose of action, interesting characters, and a lot of mystery made this story hard to put down! I need more and can't wait to see how this continues.
So far I have read Transit by Lilliana Rose. Its about Jol, a werewolf, and Adelina, a fae, who meet on a train where they think they got a shot to escape their horrible city. But things are not what they seem in this short story as get to know these two and a few others along the way. And Jol and Adelina quickly learn to team up in hopes to survive what is going on. Enjoyed the story and was rooting for these two to make it to the end.
The title only matches a few of these short stories, so if you're expecting fae kingdoms be aware that only like 2 of the 8 stories fall into that category. However, the stories that weren't traditional fantasy were really good! It was refreshing to read some very original plots.
This is a collection of 8 story's from different authors and I really enjoyed each on think I found a couple new authors and I'm going to be checking out some more of their back catalogs!!
