Dr. Purdom is a researcher and speaker for Answers in Genesis. She graduated with a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from Ohio State University in 2000. Her specialty is cellular and molecular biology. Dr. Purdom’s graduate work focused on genetic regulation of factors important for bone remodeling. She is a compelling and dynamic lecturer and well qualified to speak on the relevance of Genesis to the issue of biblical authority. She is the only female Ph.D. scientist engaged in full-time speaking and research for a biblical creationist organization in North America. Dr. Purdom is a member of the Creation Research Society and serves on the editorial board and executive council of BSG: A Creation Biology Study Group. She serves as a peer reviewer for Answers Research Journal and Creation Research Science Quarterly. She along with Dr. Joseph Francis of Master s College are co-founders of the Microbe Forum. I would have liked more in-depth info (such as you can find on Answers in Genesis). Another complaint is that the book presents things no one really "knows" as fact, such as the islands came into being due to the worldwide flood due to plates shifting around, etc. Well maybe - but don't say it as a fact, because we don't know. Maybe God created them from the beginning that way. :-P Or maybe they happened just like a bunch of other volcanoes around the world did. It also has some awkward writing via a bunch of different people sort of haphazardly put together. Otherwise, it gives some ideas and evidence to counteract some of the "evolutionary" claims concerning the Galapagos. This book is probably best read by an adult or older children. It will bore younger kids, imo. It's not the best presentation, but there isn't much else out there on this topic that is from a Christian perspective in a book format (that I can find). A lot of Christian science related books need to jump to higher standards, imo. This one could use a rewrite.
This was my car book, so it has taken me forever to read (especially since I kept forgetting to find a bookmark, so was continually losing my place and rereading sections more times than I care to count 😆).
Regardless, it was interesting, if a bit beyond my abilities at the present moment! The photography was stunning. I love that the authors unravelled the history of the Galapagos from a biblical standpoint. It took no small degree of concentration, as many of the contributors explained things quite scientifically. I'm a bit brain foggy and some of it went over my head, but it's all good. 👍
A little all over the place considering each author had their own chapter/comment replying. But overall good. The critics will hate this book because it gives an alternative to their religion of Naturalism.
Discover the wonder of God in this full-color book filled with vibrant images of the glorious island God set in the Pacific, as well as powerful insights that give Him the glory due His name. With poignant chapters from Ken Ham, John Morris, John Whitcomb, Danny Faulkner, Gary Parker, and more!

My Review:
With brilliant photography the Galapagos Islands come alive like never before. A landscape untouched by human hands that displays God's beautiful handiwork---this is the Galapagos Islands---such breathtaking majestic beauty. The Galapagos Islands are islands in the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of Ecuador. They are a chain of islands that are a direct result of volcanic activity. Some still active and some that lay dormant. We also learn more about Darwin--the man so famously known for his rejection of God and His Word.
This book on the beloved islands takes a commentary from several different experts and combines them all into one book for us all to learn from. It also helped my children and I to learn the difference between observational or operational science, science that happens in the here and now. And historical science which is science that encompasses origins, events from the past and the age of the earth. We are able to observe not only the beautiful landscapes from the islands but also the different living creatures that make their homes there.
This book is available for purchase at this link and is priced at $18.99. It is a book full of gorgeous pictures published by Master Books. I read the book to my children and we enjoyed the pictures together.
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from my participation in the Moms of Master Books Review Group.
I was introduced to this book as part of a discussion of the science of darwinian evolution. Appropriately titled, this book gives an alternate view alright, it is a simple one and it is described over and over and over. Twenty nine authors journeyed to the Galapagos and to show how Darwin got it wrong. Unintentionally funny, this collection of "young earth creationist" shows how desperate these folks are for the trappings of academic standing: advanced degrees, published articles, and even peer review. (Guess who the peers are.)
The text jumps around (each author writes an individual chapter) but the general format is: here is a wonder of Galapagos, here is the conventional scientific interpretation, and then here is the reason this all wrong, based on bible passages. Noah's flood plays the dominate role in many explanations. "The Fall" (when Eve disobeyed by eating the fruit) explains the struggle for survival, and of course, this all happened recently, in the last 6000 years. Some discussion of the limits of evolution (only within biblical "kind" from Noah's Ark) explains the variety of life we see today. Radiometric dating is dismissed as misleading and completely unreliable.
For those who, like me, are drawn to this collection of creation rhetoric, it is neat to have so many creationists in one place. Some old familiars (John Morris and Ken Ham) are there but there are many new names to check out. They are all Christian apologists who work for one of the standard outlets for this sort of thing (Institute for Creation Research, Creation Research Society, Answers in Genesis and the Creation Ministry). No surprise there, perhaps, but some like Dr Andrew Snelling have curious backgrounds, one foot in the world of young earth creation science, another in industrial geological research where he references time by the number of MYA - millions of years ago. Dr Snelling's two sides are completely independent of each other. Neat trick! Dr Snelling gets paid twice for a pair of mutually exclusive mindsets. Creationists got to eat too.
Dr Snelling aside, I like to think these authors are true BELIEVERS. They view the world thru Christian literalist lenses. Critical thinking is discouraged. For those needing reminders that religious thinking of this sort was long past, this book is excellent.
Darwin’s time at the Galapagos Islands eventually lead to his proposed idea of the theory of evolution due to what he saw. He saw many differences among the living creatures on this unique island and concluded that these differences would over time cause these creatures to evolve into different organism. Because of his well publicized works, the Galapagos Islands are often viewed as the home of evolution. The reality, when viewed through a Biblical lens, is quite different.
We now know that the creatures on the Galapagos Islands did adapt and change with their surroundings, but they didn’t change from one species to another species. A finch is still a finch even if it does have different characteristics.
Galapagos Islands: A Different View takes readers on a beautiful photographic journey through the Galapagos Islands, viewing the variances in nature through the eyes of people who believe in a Creator.
