Dr. Ken Ham is the president of Answers in Genesis USA and is a well-known speaker and author on the subject of Young-Earth Creationism. He received a bachelor degree in applied science (emphasis on environmental biology) from the Queensland Institute of Technology, and a Diploma of Education from the University of Queensland. He has also received two honorary doctorates: a Doctor of Divinity from Temple Baptist College, and a Doctor of Literature from Baptist Liberty University.

He was a director of Creation Science Foundation (CSF) in Australia, an organization which he jointly founded with John Mackay. In 1987 he moved to the United States, still maintaining his links with CSF.

From 1987 to 1993, Ham worked for the Institute for Creation Research, and in 1994 set up what in 1995 became Answers in Genesis (AiG), a creation ministry dedicated to "upholding the authority of the Bible from the very first verse."

In 2008 Ham was described by well known atheist and evolutionary biologist PZ Myers as a "Wackaloon" for carrying out a prayer session with members of the Pentagon. Ham responded regarding the validity of that prayer breakfastand that PZ Myers and other critics were intolerant of his position.

Looking for a book on space for young kids that’s written from a Christian worldview? This volume in the Answers Book for Kids series by Ken Ham is on the topic of space and astronomy! My kids really liked this and when I asked them to describe the book in one word they said “Cool,” “Fun” and “Awesome.” One of my daughters enjoyed the discussion about the Black Hole which was new to them while another said they enjoyed the illustration.
Like the earlier volumes this book takes a question and answer format. On one page is the question from a child then the next page is an answer that begins first with a Bible verse. Each answer ranges from one to three paragraphs. The book disusess the Milky Way, Galaxy and rings of planets. Most of the books in this series presents 22 questions but this volume has twenty question. Some of the fascinating questions I enjoyed in the book include “What is the farthest that we’ve sent something into space?,” “How far away is the next galaxy?” and “How big is our galaxy?”
What makes this book different than the earlier volume is that this includes a two page glossary and a page on yearly meteor showers’ dates and another page with a table of planets and the first five Dwarf Planets. Fun for parents to read to their kids and I imagine it would be educational to parents and kids.

Overall, this is a good edition to the series. While I found books 3 and 4 centered on information present in many places and, therefore, somewhat boring, the questions of these later volumes (5 & 6 were released simultaneously) are back to the caliber of the early editions (1 & 2) and indicate an expansion of both depth and breadth of creation science knowledge by the inquirers.

However, the following made me slightly uncomfortable:

1) Many of the questions do not have a direct Biblical connection. For example, "Do meteors burn up and are they dangerous?" The answer, which references scientific facts (how meteors behave, the difference between meteors, meteoroids and asteroids), and historical events (the 2013 meteor hit in Russia). However, consistent with the format, a Bible verse appears above the answer. In this case, it reads, "Do not be overly wicked, nor be foolish: why should you die before your time? (Ecclesiastes 7:17)." What does this verse have to do with the answer? Why is it here? At the bottom of the page, two verses are listed. I looked these verses up and have written them out here:

Ecclesiastes 3:1
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens."

Romans 8:22
"We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time."

The Romans passage *could have* been related to the answer, but this type of theological concept is not discussed. It seems that some effort should be made to distinguish between those questions and answers that are based on Biblical texts and those that are not. It also seems that a commitment to the format overruled the concept that the Biblical passages should make sense!

2) Is it possible there are living things in space?
The Bible does not speak to this directly, yet AIG materials take a strong stand against life beyond Earth. While I find their theological arguments compelling, I would feel comfortable with more room left for the unknown.

3) Did Christians believe the earth was flat?
This answer is strong, as it is largely based in history. However, the last paragraph states, "From the big picture, though, Christians should always be careful about taking ideas that come from outside Scripture and mixing them with their Christianity. Instead, we should trust what God's Word says since He knows best." A little of this discretion would go a long way, at least in making me feel wholly comfortable with the book.

These points considered, I still highly recommend this series. There is not much out there to examine these points of creationism, especially for kids. And even the areas in which we disagree can lead to wonderful discussion among groups of children and adults. After all, complete agreement is not necessary for fellowship and we need to model that for our children too, even as we teach them to think critically.

About the Books:

Never short of questions, let these titles bring answers to children who may just want to know, or who may be struggling in their walk with Christ. Parents and teachers need not be afraid of the tough questions with these solid apologetics titles in The Answers Book for Kids series.

About the Authors:

Ken Ham is the president/CEO and founder of Answers in Genesis - U.S. and the highly acclaimed Creation Museum. Ken Ham is one of the most in-demand Christian speakers in North America. Ken’s emphasis is on the relevance and authority of the book of Genesis and how compromise on Genesis has opened a dangerous door regarding how the culture and church view biblical authority. His Australian accent, keen sense of humor, captivating stories, and exceptional PowerPoint illustrations have made him one of North America’s most effective Christian communicators.

Bodie Hodge has been a writer, speaker, and researcher for Answers in Genesis since 2003. He writes and speaks on a host of topics including The Fall of Satan and The Tower of Babel. He is passionate about providing biblical answers to believers, seekers, and non-believers.

My Review:

These books and the rest in the series are the best books for children because they answer alot of the questions that children generally ask. The best part about the answers given to any one question is that they are Bible based and I will tell you that, that alone makes my heart glad. We use these books to reinforce our knowledge of the Bible and they are really easy for our children to understand. There is also a small glossary placed in the back of the book to help with definitions.

The Answers Book for Kids Volume 5 consists of 20 Questions from kids on Space and Astronomy including:

What day were planets created?
Is it possible that there are living things in space?
What about the big bang?

The Answers Book for Kids Volume 6 consists of 22 questions from kids on Babel and the Ice Age including:

Where was the Tower of Babel built?
How many languages came from Babel?
Have you ever found a frozen person from the Ice Age?

So as you can see these small books lead to an even bigger testimony that only God can fulfill and they will expand on the Bible teachings you have already instilled in your children or they could be used when there isn't much Bible teaching presented to them. They are geared for ages 5-11.
These books and all the rest in the series are available at this link. New Leaf Publishing Group is the publisher of all the books. The books are very affordable at $5.99 each. If you would like to read more reviews on these books, you can do so at this link.

As a father of eight kids, I'm always on the lookout for new devotional and questions and answer books to share with my children at mealtime and bedtime. One particular favorite of my four and six-year-old has been The Answers Book For Kids series published by Master Books. We've nearly worn out the earlier books in the series, so I was quite delighted when volumes 5 and 6 showed up at the Bible Geek Gone Wild headquarters last month.

Each reading is two pages long and can be completed in around two minutes or less. On the left-hand page, you'll see the question that is being considered and the name and age of the child who asked the question. Now, if there was only text on that page, I don't think my children would be quite as engaged with this series, however they always want to know the name and age of the child asking the question and look at the picture. These extra elements do a great job of drawing the children in and really makes this series stand out in comparison to other question and answer books that tend to be less visually engaging. On the right-hand page, you'll find the answer to the question at hand, including related Bible verses and a few paragraphs of further commentary. Finally at the bottom of the right-hand page, you'll see some additional Bible verses to read as well.

The Answers Book for Kids, Volume 5 considers twenty questions related to space and astronomy. To give you an idea of the type of questions considered, here are a few examples:

*What are black holes? (p. 12-13)
*Did Christians believe the earth was flat? (p. 24-25)
*What about the big bang? (p. 34-35)

My family has found The Answers Book for Kids series to be particularly well suited for reading at either mealtime or bedtime. And although each reading can be completed in under two minutes, we often have five plus minutes of follow up discussion, especially when all of us are together at the dinner table. Our kids ranging from four to fourteen have greatly enjoyed these books, so I feel the recommended age range of six to twelve is right on.

Parents desiring to introduce their children to age appropriate apologetics resources with a high view of the authority of Scripture will find The Answers Book for Kids series a welcome addition to their family library.

My overall rating for The Answers Book for Kids, Volumes 5 is five out of five stars. Highly recommended!
