Straight dads don’t get crushes on 22-year-old star quarterbacks. Right? Kace Tomlin is the nation’s hottest, youngest pro quarterback at age 22, and he’s out and proud. When Kace hired my little construction company to work on his multi-million dollar mansion, it was the quickest hell yes of my life. Usually I’m in Dad Mode, 24/7—boring, predictable, and dependable. But being plunged into a young hotshot football player’s world is anything but predictable. I can’t stop watching him. Craving him. And after one blazing hot night, we can’t keep our hands off each other. I hate that he gets my wires all crossed, and makes me feel like I’m nowhere close to straight. But Kace has a TV crew filming every moment of his private life. We’re on the show now, for all of Kace’s fans to see, keeping our smoldering secret hidden. Is this all just another game? Or will he be reckless with me, for the whole world to see?

Dnf @15 % . Kind if tired of this type of …baiting. When you put in the title “the straight dad” make him straight and deliver what you promised : a sexuality discovery . A guy who admits to drooling for some time over the shirtless football player and then he says it’s normal even if he is straight it’s kinda hard to believe you know? How much more will the authors use this “oblivious straight guy” card? You know, the 35 years old straight guy who sleeps and cuddles with the gay guy and think it’s normal buddy-buddy behavior, or who drools over a guy’s body and says it is normal to admire another man’s dick 🙄 I mean, come on, they’re grown up men not 14 years old teenagers.
Two pages in this book and the guy was very happy to meet the guy who had him drooling for half a year (but don’t worry he’s straight he says 😉) .
Also the dialogues are cringey af and the guy comes across as a moronic hick .
This author used to write better books, I don’t know what happened..

🌶️🌶️

I rode the line for pretty much this entire story. Half the time I loved it and the other half not so much.

Maybe I don’t know much about professional renovators but I would think a professional of any kind wouldn’t act rude (even in the name of humor) or curse so much in front of a client, especially not a celebrity… even if he’s young… even if he himself acts a certain way.

I enjoyed the power dynamic between them, I didn’t see it coming. Both MC’s have several pros and cons.

Kace is fun loving and carefree but he’s not superficial… at least not all the time. The most important part is his gooey center searching for acceptance. At first his bright, bubbly persona could be cringe but it became more lovable as the book progressed.

The best parts of Grant is him as a dad. I’ve already mentioned his lack of professionalism but the way he treats and uses Kace, yeah not ok.

Seriously? Grant can’t be that oblivious! How would you feel if someone treated you like a caricature? Like your worth is nothing more than a good story?!

Having said that there is chemistry, it’s just kind of confusing. There’s so much back and forth. Every sex scene is too drawn out and riddled with unnecessary information that you forget what they were up to, so it ended up feeling rather lackluster.

The part that had the most impact was the reason Kace wanted his guesthouse to be renovated and how it all played out. I will never understand homophobic parents that turn their back on their children.

Ahhhh, this was just a lovely, romantic, sweet, sexy read!

If you're a fan of:
Bi-awakening
Age gap (Kace is 22 and Nathan is 16 years older I think)
Small town feels
Pro-football player meets construction/home-repair owner
Single dad (and the kid isn't annoying or overly precocious!)

Then you should grab this book. I haven't read the first book in the series, but I'm going back and correcting that right now. Nathan is hired on to renovate a pool house owned by Kace Tomlin, a newly turned pro-football star who is openly gay.

I love the chemistry and connection between these two, right from the start, and as Nathan is trying to figure things out. The two have such an ease to their interactions, it was fun and fresh to read about. And Kace is just so full of life, energy, and fun. I loved how into Nathan he is right from the start.

The main conflict comes from both of them have insecurities - Kace not wanting to be in the closet, Nathan worried about his age and how "normal" he is compared to a pro-football player's life. I'm glad this didn't have a huge misunderstanding moment, and I loved how things played out with the reveals at the end.

These two - I loved them! I could read about them a lot more I think. And now I'm looking forward to more of their friends getting their own stories!

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I liked this story a good bit. Some of the issues other reviewers have with Nathan being "straight" yet still having attraction to other men is addressed in the book, so it wasn't a huge deal for me. I liked both characters a lot, and liked that there was tension in places without being the dreaded "3rd act breakup."

I would have liked to have seen more with Nathan's daughter and how she reacted to his relationship with Kace, though, and I think that was a huge missed opportunity from a story telling perspective.

I had so much fun with this book! It was a wonderful, fun, easy read that kept me interested the whole way through. This is my first book by this author but I’d absolutely love to read book 1 in the series and any future books! This is definitely a standalone and I had no issue reading it without reading book 1.

The dynamic between Kace and Nathan was awesome and something I didn’t know I needed! I loved the nicknames Kace had for Nathan (especially one) and that he used them while taking control in the bedroom. I’d love to read more stories with this dynamic!

Once we got to know Kace he was incredibly down-to-earth for a famous football player. I loved how caring and thoughtful he was of the people that mattered to him! Nathan was also a great character and I loved how he dealt with his attraction to Kace.

I definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more by this author.

Actual gutter trash. ACTUAL gutter trash. I have never in my life yelled at a girl book like this. I was rooting for you, we were all rooting for you, how dare you???

To be clear, I'm still here for the author, I still like her writing, I'm still invested in the boys, I'll still be continuing the series.

But oh my GOD, WHAT DID I JUST READ??? I'm not even gonna spoiler tag this, enjoy.

This book needed to be 200 pages longer. Or have like six fewer plot points. Or just not be written. Because straight up everything about this was given like zero page time to simmer and develop.

Bi awakening? They were getting flirty by chapter 3 and physical by chapter 5.
Fame as an obstacle? IMMEDIATELY brushed to the side as soon as they kissed in public, zero conversation or fallout, Nathan never needing to deal with the press, nothing
Nathan's daughter? We seriously didn't even get a scene of him coming out to her? Or her reaction to them dating? We just jump two months and they're chilling on the couch playing video games? Please. Not to mention her little night out that also never went anywhere. I'm convinced she only exists so we could get moments of Kace calling Nathan daddy.
Kace's homophobic family? Or closeted ex? Literal non-factors, throwaway lines at best
Nathan's ex-wife? Why even write a mildly tense phone call with zero followup.
Football? Basically never came up, we get Two (2) Teammates, half a page at a practice, and an acknowledgement in the epilogue that they'll have to sext when Kace is on the road.
Their first I Love You's? BURIED BETWEEN THE LAST CHAPTER AND THE EPILOGUE FOR SOME REASON? At least this ended in an HFN place instead of HEA, I would've thrown up in my mouth if one of them had pulled out a ring.

It feels like the only reason this book exists is because Raleigh said "in one book's time, I need them to have their own TV show, what's the quickest way I can get there?" and now here we are.

I'm manifesting this being the worst book I read in 2024 because I don't know that I can handle something coming up and dethroning it.

This was my second book by Raleigh Rubins and I can’t believe I waited so long between books. I loved the first book, but somehow didn’t check out anything else by this writer. I’m so glad I decided to read this book. I have to admit that Nathan constantly saying he’s straight while obviously being attracted to Kace was pretty silly. It had me rolling my eyes a few times, but fortunately it didn’t cause me to DNF. I just loved Kace and Nathan together. I can’t wait to read more of Raleigh’s books.

Such a sweet book, with a crazy-cute young out football player and a straight contractor-dad.
They have different realities, Kace is 22 years old and the soul of the party, while Nathan is older, a dad and dependable
This book brings back the MCs from the previous books from this author.
Despite it's all very fast as Nathan accepts, he's attracted to Kace, the book is very funny.
The rest you must read the book because it’s so good.
Highly recommended

Recommend for a great M/M read.

Enjoyed the low level angst and beautifully built feelings between Nathan and Kace. Their interactions together, as well as relationships with secondary characters, felt natural and added to the overall wold-building which allowed me to immerse myself in this story.

Kace and Nathan ❤️

3 Stars ⭐️

As much as I wanted to love this story, the connection between these two fell flat to me compared to the first book in this series. I'm going to just lay it all out there: Kace was way to much of a stereotypical dude bro for me especially the way he kept calling Nathan bro, dude etc. and Nathan, ugh, he frustrated me in the way he kept saying he was straight... um, no your not! At the end when it came to him revealing his crush/relationship to Shawn he says he's always been curious, um what? That's not what you've said in your head the whole book so yeah that was a bit of a head scratcher right there. Anyways, it ended on a very cute note so there was that and I have to say that I fell a little bit more in love with Charlie throughout this book and can't wait for his story next!

I find it incredibly obnoxious and irritating when others do this!! The MC is not a 13-year-old boy, and he should know better!!
To declare that you are “straight” and then say you’re sexually affected by another man, just because you “have a pulse”, is the most asinine and ludicrous thing on earth!! This idiot is not a kid and for him to continue to do and say the things he is doing and saying here is absolutely ridiculous, absurd, ignorant, and problematic!!
And don’t get me started on the immature, juvenile, stupid, absurd, ridiculous, writing and dialogue here! The author is so incredibly problematic and ignorant and obnoxious!!! But anyway …
If you are sexually attracted to anybody without distinction, it isn’t just because you have a pulse, it’s most likely because you’re pansexual! But that’s beside the point!!
If you are a straight/heterosexual man, you are in no capacity whatsoever, in any way, shape, or form, going to be attracted or sexually affected by another man!! Because you’re fucking straight!! Never ever going to happen!! If it does, you are absolutely not fucking straight!!
Anything that deviates from that means you are part of the queer community in some capacity! You might be gay, bisexual, pansexual, etc, but you are most fucking definitely not straight/heterosexual in any capacity whatsoever, in any way, shape, or form!
So for this nonsense to fucking continue just for the sake of contrived angst, drama and bullshit, makes this author one of the most fucking ignorant, obnoxious, and irritating writers!! The main character, recognizing that he’s not straight, but unable to come to terms with whatever sexuality he might be is completely understandable and completely legitimate, and is a story I’m sure many people share, but to fuck around with men, or being sexually attracted to men, and die on the hill of heterosexuality, is absolutely astronomically delusional and absurd!! If you’re a kid, that sort of makes sense, but if you are a grown man, fucking hell already, enough is enough with this pandering to bullshit and nonsense just to make a buck!!
The author should have written this from an entirely different angle and a completely different way in order to give attention to this particular struggle, which I recognize DOES exist, instead of creating this garbage and perpetuating this main character’s stupidity-by-proxy, which is a direct reflection of the author, who is so incredibly fucking ignorant and obnoxious where this story is concerned!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I picked this book up without many expectations… I’d read the first in the series and liked it, but age gap romances are one of my least favourite tropes. Considering that, I was a little surprised when it sucked me right in and soon I was looking for little excuses throughout the day to grab my book and read more. I really liked the character development and progression of the story. I wanted a little more Maddie and a few loose ends tied up (maybe another 10-15k would’ve been perfect) but honestly I really enjoyed this book. I haven’t rooted for a couple this much in ages.

gentleness, tenderness and fire all in one story!

This is a modern romance, the second book in the “Fixer Brothers Construction Co.” series and should be read in order! Nathan is a straight laced Dad in every description of the role, but there’s something about Kace that sets him afire. Suddenly there’s something between them, Nathan is ready to take a chance but does Kace want to just be another experiment for somebody? I love this author’s writing style, there’s such a gentleness when I expected just adrenaline, lust etc, there’s tenderness and gooey!

I love love love bi-discovery in middle aged protags. I love that he was clinging to his straight label for all that it was worth, that is 100% believable in older generations. This book made my millennial heart so happy. It was fluffy, sexy and had a ridiculously cute HEA I can't ask for more. I devoured it like a bag of popcorn and I'm already off to hit up the rest of the series. Hot dads being adorable around silly sexy jocks is my kryptonite!

This was such a sweet, no-angst book. I love everything Raleigh writes, but this book is definitely a favorite. The characters were all great, and the writing kept me engaged in the story. I didn't want to put my Kindle down; I read it in one sitting. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily gave my honest review.

Spoiler alert - he's not straight

The irony in the title of an MM romance hahaha.
Hopefully no women walked into this thinking "oh, he's straight, just what I wanted" ... Because he's definitely got it bad for a dude!

I really enjoyed this book and I'll definitely be picking up the rest of the series!

The characters are great. The spice was fantastic.
Definitely recommend!

This is a fun bi-awakening, age-gap romance. Nathan is a divorced, older dad who co-owns a construction company and spends half the week with his 15 year-old daughter. When he gets called to bid on the remodel of a guest house at a large modern mansion, he meets 22 year-old Kace. Kace is a highly successful millionaire football star who is proudly gay. When Nathan meets Kace, he identifies as straight, but he finds himself inexplicably attracted to Kace. Kace has always liked older men, so the feeling is mutual. Can the two men work through their individual emotions and miscommunications? This book has a nice relationship arc and a committed, healing love.

I loved the premise of this book. Age-gap and a sports romance? Sign me up. And I absolutely liked most things about the book. The only thing missing on my part was a bit of depth to the relationship.
They were both attracted to each other pretty much from the get-go. But I feel like really emotional conversations - also about their pasts - didn't get much space. It all seemed a bit superficial.
Aside from that this is a wonderful read.

Straight Dad is the second book in the Fixer Brothers Construction Co series by Raleigh Ruebins. This book is about Kace and Nathan. Kace is a 22 year old, out and proud star quarterback. Nathan is a 36 year old dad who's straight?

I loved their story. It was sweet, sexy, full of feels and very well written.

I'm pretty sure this is a very sexy book, and I appreciated that the older party in the age gap was not spectacularly immature, but I just could not get past:

1. The dad is not quite 37 but he is clueless like my 90 yo grandma. If I'm just a couple years older and I understand the pop culture references that other characters are making, I don't understand how the dad is not remotely clued in. Awkward, middle-aged, responsible lumbersexual? Sure. Total luddite who apparently has no access to, like, any media at all except football? I'm skeptical.

2. The 22 yo football QB is too much. Too much everything. Maybe I could get past the improbability of a rookie quarterback being not only the starter but also almost winning the championship. Improbable, but okay. Maybe I could understand his desire to connect with fans on socials to stay relevant. Probably the easiest thing to accept would be his sexual promiscuity, because why not be a hot young thang who gets bangs? Get it! BUT I cannot get behind a professional athlete who is both an exceptional leader and player but who also throws tons of wild parties and drinks like a whale, who is not only posting every second of his life on Insta but is also being followed around by a television crew because he needs to make a TV show out of his life, and who has FIVE (5!) assistants FOR DIFFERENT CITIES. Like. What? Why? What is he even doing in Miami, LA, and New York? And why does that necessitate FIVE PAs? He was a rookie quarterback last season. What?

3. The sentence structure is basic.

Part of me wants to know what happens, but it's all just TOO MUCH.

This took way longer than I liked to get into, but I persevered.I'm glad I did as by the end I quite enjoyed Nathan and Kace's story and how their relationship grew. Nathan, even though he claimed to be straight, is enamoured as soon as he sees Kace; there's a instant attraction on Kace's part too. Once they get together, they fall in love, the forever kind, and Nathan's daughter is fine with it. There is a little angst, in the way Kace's family treat him, it was nice to see it dealt with, and for Kace to be happy. I enjoyed it more than the first book in the series. 3.75 stars.

This book was not good. At all. So much cringe. Why would someone bring a bottle of wine and an old fashioned camera to a party hosted by a twenty something? And all this talk about being straight, especially for a guy with two gay brothers. Get over it! So much of this book didn’t feel like it would really happen. A shame since I did like the first and fourth book in this series. Not sure if I want to read the rest.

I found Straight Dad to be an entertaining, sweet romance between the younger guy who has it all - money, fame, good body from playing top level sport - and the older local construction business owner who is a single dad. Kace is a lot of fun from the start, not ashamed of his body, the hookups he has or being out and proud. He's quick to tease Nathan and, though he has experienced heartbreak in the past, can't keep away from the attractive guy with silver in his hair and the ability to make Kace to feel like the 'normal' guy he used to be. Nathan just can't believe that a person like Kace, super famous, rich and gorgeous, is so nice, welcoming and friendly to him. What is the most unexpected thing is his reaction to the young man. Nathan has always considered himself straight and so it's quite the mind bender to go through as he adjusts to what he is experiencing with Kace. They have a lot of fun and enjoy exploring together, Kace taking things as slow as Nathan needs, which is a sweet consideration. However, there is a camera crew constantly following Kace around so that adds that bit of danger to what they're doing as well as Nathan's construction company working on Kace's guest house which just happens to be his two brothers, Shawn and Tristan, along with Charlie.
There are still some serious moments as Nathan works through this new change in his world, along with having a teenage daughter. Then Kace has to deal with his feelings regarding his family and how things have been since he came out a couple of years ago. Nathan is very supportive to him with that, not pushing for information or a resolution, just allowing Kace to lean on him and be there for whatever he needs.
It's a really good addition to the series and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. It should be interesting with how Charlie got a little taste of the limelight in this one.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
