This book made me laugh, cry, and reflect on my own moments of idiocy and the grace that followed. This is great for new believers, or for the lifelong Christian. Bubna explores the idea that humanity, with all its flaws, is just a breath away from moments of extraordinary grace, even when we feel completely lost and alone. This book will have you spiritually doing the face-palm, crying, laughing, and more importantly becoming closer to a God who extends grace to us all.

This book Is a lovely reminder of God’s love for us, regardless of our foolish decisions and actions.

The most beautiful word picture for me was when Bubna described holding his first grandchild and how he was over swept with unconditional love for that child. The parallel between that experience and His love for us was vivid.

This book had me hooked early. Bubna's ability to weave the grace of God in with real life experiences makes this a quick and engaging read. I found myself relating to the highs and lows that Bubna describes throughout the book.

Here is the biggest two things that you can take away from this book:
1) If you are just getting started with God or are trying to find answers, this book is for you. Bubna's depiction of what grace looks like in the real world is spot on. This book is filled with emotion that is raw and understandable. You will laugh, you will cry but most of all, you will see an honest account of one man's life and how God has filled that life with grace.

2)If you are a "seasoned" Christian, this book is for you. This is the category that I fall into with my relationship with God. Epic Grace had me in tears and rolling on the floor laughing as I experienced the grace of God from another person's perspective. Sometimes, in the hectic day to day life, I lose site of my constant need for grace. I was reminded time and time again, that God's gift in Jesus is a moment to moment gift. It never gives up.

This book will impact you in many ways. It is a quick read, so take a break for life and make time for Epic Grace.

I enjoyed this book so much. Kurt W. Bubna explains the grace of God so beautifully through his own life experiences -- The grace that seems to be incomprehensible because it's so far beyond what we think or hope to experience in our own lives, becomes attainable when we learn how much God loves us. I recommend this book to anyone who feels as if they will never be good enough to receive God's love. I'll be reading this book again and again over the years.

Epic Grace is written to assist readers into comprehending that God’s grace and mercy is a compelling critical aspect of grasping what being a Christian is truly all about. Kurt W. Bubna begins the book by admitting to his readers that he is a recovering idiot and he has made numerous mistakes throughout his life. By despite, his failures and his mistakes God was and is gracious enough to forgive him of his sins and give him implausible epic grace when he didn’t deserve it or earn it. He revealed to readers several personal stories about his heartaches, hardships, regrets, and how God’s amazing grace sustained him through his suffering.

Kurt W. Bubna realized that perseverance and endurance during the difficult times is often overlooked. Most people don’t connect perseverance to the term grace. But he stressed that grace isn’t just about sinning and repenting, grace can also mean, receiving divine assistance while we are enduring through our struggles and suffering. God is always by our side in the midst of trying seasons of our lives and He promised to never leave us or forsake us. He is a true friend that sticks close to us and He has everything under complete control, even when we feel like there is chaos all around. Job was a man who feared God and stayed away from evil things and God surpassingly blessed him. Satan told God that if he could test Job and destroy everything he has then Job would surely curse God. God allowed it and satan began taking away everything Job treasured. Job had his donkeys and oxen stolen and all of his servants were tragically killed, next lighting stuck and burned up his sheep and all of his shepherds but one, and later raiders stole his camels and killed all of the servants but one. Just when he thought it couldn’t get any worst, another blow hit it blew behind the knees this time. A messenger arrived and told him the awful news that his children was at their oldest brother’s house when a powerful wind swept and made the house collapse, killing everyone but the one messenger. Losing children would be the final straw for most parents but Job fell to the ground and worshiped God even after the fact that his children were gone. (I don’t know if I would even have the strength to do that) He was also tested in his health and was tortured with boils all over his body. His wife complained and told him to curse God and die. His friends kept blaming and stating that all of his problems was because of all of the sins that he has committed. Job went through appalling suffering that no one wants to have to undergo. But Job is an excellence example of someone who continued to worship God and trust him during these problematic trials.

Unfortunately, Kurt W. Bubna has experienced terrible grief and it’s one his family never saw coming. His daughter-in-law went into premature labor at seven months along. On the way to the long drive to the hospital, Nathan, his son called and told them the news that his little son, Phineas was born with undeveloped lungs and only lived an hour. Like most people, Kurt questioned God and he didn’t understand why he had to lose his grandson. His entire family was heartbroken and devastated. During this trial, he learnt that God knows what it is like to lose a Son and God was always there to comfort him in his grief. I would love to write that was the only dreadful pain that he ever had to go through but it wasn’t.

I also loved the personal story about how Kurt discovered his calling and destiny and how he became a preacher. I related to the questions on “the process of discovery” that he presented in the chapter entitled, “Driven by Destiny”. I massively benefited from this section and I was reminded to listen to the still small voice and promptings that God places on our hearts in order for us to determine God’s purpose for our lives. It’s also viral to listen to what others believe to be our gifts and talents from God. It’s important to make sure that the Godly advice we receive from our friend’s line up with what God is saying and what he says in His written word. This past year, God has impressed upon me to assist His chosen people in whatever areas, they are struggling in and help them to overcome their issues that our hindering them from being all that God has intended for them to be. I’m majoring in Psychology because I want to be equipped to help children and adults, who struggle with low self-esteem, eating disorders, love and relationship issues, red flags in dating, how to end bullying, preventing suicide, parenting children, marriage problems, overcoming addictions, grief, handling stress in the workplace, how to monitor technology usage with children, how to protect our children from predators, how to help foster children to deal with the trauma experiences of losing or being abandoned by their birth parents, and people who were abused. I’m still seeking God on where He wants me to serve and where I should focus on being a therapist or a counselor. This chapter greatly reinforced the significance of following God’s plan and purpose for my life.

I would recommend this magnificent book about God’s epic grace to anyone who is feeling like a failure, and they are feeling terrible guilty for the sins that they have committed, and they feel like God can’t possible forgive them and love them. This book will proved to you that God can forgive us of our stupid mistakes and sins, all we have to do is confess and repent, and turn away from our sins. God freely sent His only Son to die on a wooden cross for our many sins and He took the punishment we all deserved, which is death. The book will impart in readers that God will give them grace through whatever trials they have to withstand and He is constantly there. The book was a gigantic catalyst in helping me understand more fully the concept of epic grace. I immensely loved how Kurt W. Bubna was transparent in his struggles and triumphs and how epic grace from our loving Creator changed his life completely. He was very genuine in disclosing that he grew up in a dysfunctional family and his father had an unrealistic standard of perfection that no one could measure up to. His father also had secret addictions and was angry most of the time. Kurt shared that he was at one time, the prodigal son who rebelled and did shameful things that he regretted. He confessed that there was a time he drank a lot and partied hard whenever he got the chance. But by the grace of God, his life has turned around to where now he is serving God fully. I truly appreciated his honesty regarding his marriage troubles and how they went to a marriage counselor for guidance. The notion of the large circle conveying how a marriage covenant bond is supposed to work during the different stages of marriage was very life changing and will be extremely helpful to readers. I also loved the chapter about Caleb and his adoption story it was very inspiring to learn about how Caleb became to be a part of Kurt’s daughter, Jessica’s family. I greatly hope that God has me a Caleb out there somewhere in the future. I highly commend Kurt for writing such a life changing book and being extremely open to his fellow readers. If you’re looking for a book on the topic of grace, then you need to read this one!

EpicGraceCover Ever have one of those days? Days where all you can see is where you messed up? Days where it seems like no matter how hard you tried, all anyone else can see is where you messed up? Days where you cry out to God, wailing, "Why me? I'm trying! Can't you see I'm trying?" Or even worse... days where you're ready to just give up altogether?

Yup... that's where I've been this past couple of weeks. No matter how hard I tried, it seemed like everyone's focus (including my own, after a while) was on my shortcomings. I actually got reprimanded at work for not being aware that someone else wasn't doing anything (while I was running my butt off) and proactively delegating to her. (I have to admit, at that point, all I could think was okay, well, everyone knew *I* was crazy busy. If someone else chose to use that time to sit and read instead of stepping up and helping out, why am *I* the one getting in trouble for it?)

I've been feeling like life's a party... only I'm the piñata! I think my breaking point was at the end of a 12 hour shift that involved a neonatal resuscitation. I not only took great care of that patient but got all the things, like hearing tests and newborn photos, that are hard to get done on dayshift, completed... but a dayshift nurse came on and started yelling about why didn't I stock linens (how am I supposed to stock linens that haven't been delivered yet??) or diapers... excuse me, there are how many of you on days? And only one of me on nights? How about spending 30 seconds even acknowledging what I did get done (which was mammoth) before launching into a tirade (and going to the clinical charge to get me in trouble) over things that while needed, were NOT top priority?
Frankly, I felt like an idiot...
I felt like an idiot. I felt used. I felt worthless. I felt like I would never measure up, no matter how hard I tried. (And no, this was nowhere near the first incident along these lines recently.) I spent so much of the next day crying that my midwife even noticed how puffy my eyes were at my next prenatal care appointment over 24 hours later! (And my blood pressure shot up to 148/96... NOT good for a 5 month pregnant mama. Luckily I'm good at biofeedback and worked with her and got it down to where it needs to be with a little deep breathing and clearing my mind.)
But God provides!
The night after the debacle at work (and before the midwife appointment), as I was falling asleep, Steven came in with the mail and asked, "Were you expecting a book in the mail?" I had totally forgotten that I had been selected to review the book Epic Grace: Chronicles of a Recovering Idiot by Kurt W. Bubna through the Tyndale House review program. (Hey, if there's a way to get free books, I'm in. Free Christian books? Even better!) It lifted my spirits a little just knowing I had a new book to read, but after 3 backside-kicking 12 hour night shifts, I needed to sleep, so I didn't get around to starting it until after my midwife appointment.

Pastor Bubna doesn't pull any punches. He talks about how we often create our own catastrophes... but he also talks about how there are also circumstances outside of our control that suck just as much. He doesn't just throw platitudes like "Just trust in Jesus" or "It's all God's plan" or so on at you... he admits that in some ways those can be used as a form of "Suck it up, Buttercup" which is not useful in the moment.

Instead, he guides you through some of life's most difficult issues: trying to find our place in the world, suffering from comparing ourselves to others, temptations (and what happens when we cave in to them), feeling lost and alone, and so much more. He does this with wit and total humility by explaining how he personally faced many of these issues and totally biffed things up!

This book could not have come at a more perfect time. Reading it felt like having lunch with an old friend... the kind of friend who knows and trusts you enough to dish the real dirt, hug you and call you out for your craptastic thinking patterns all at the same time.

By the time I was done, I was in a much more resourceful state of mind. Other people's problems are their problems. I don't answer to them. I answer to God. Yes, it is my responsibility to try to find ways of being more efficient... and to ask for help more emphatically... (I did ask for assistance, which wasn't given until well after 6 am on a 7pm to 7 am shift.) I know I did a good job for my patients. I needed to remember to focus as much... or more... on the words of a mother who thanked me profusely for helping her to breastfeed her baby, who told me that it was so important to her... as on the critical fault-finding of my coworkers.

I don't have to pretend that life doesn't suck sometimes. It does. But I need to get out of my head and lift up my eyes and see the tremendous blessings that God has given me in the form of my goofy husband, my intense but awesome kids and those people God has placed in my life to help strengthen and support me. I also need to be aware of and extend grace to others around me who are also suffering and in need of God's epic grace and love in their lives.

I'm going to leave you with some words from Pastor Bubna:

God works well with broken people because He has so many pieces to work with...

Don't give up! If you need prayer or even just a virtual hug, let me know! I love each and every one of you who graces me by spending time on this website. Leave a comment below and I will add you to my prayer list...

With that subtitle, I had no idea what to expect from this book...

God loves you, just because - this is Epic Grace in a nutshell. A practical, non-nonsense way of reminding us that God is always present and that we can actually come close to Him in every circumstance, only if we allow ourselves to follow His voice, rather than feed our independence - our idiocy - and fail over and over again.

How often have we felt that we can do more that what we are currently doing? How many times have we been told that we have to behave in such way, complete all of these courses in church or even not shed tears at the loss of a loved one? Yes, all of these are expected "christian" responses to every-day life occurrences; however, responding differently and just being a tad human does not imply that we fall away from God - it's just the opposite. It is during these hardships and confusing learning periods that God talks to us and shows his magnificent grace towards us.

Mr. Bubna reminds us that it is God's love and grace poured towards us in the most unexpected and difficult circumstances what shapes our characters and minds. It is also His grace that shows His patience with us and gives us the opportunity to stand up after falling, learn and overcome. He is the one that transforms trials into blessings and guides our steps back to Him when we are lost and overwhelmed by circumstances. It is all about God's epic grace opposing hopelessness and winning each time!

And just in case you have been lectured and lectured time and time again about all your shortcomings, don't worry! Mr. Bubna is just like your next-door friend, with whom you can spend endless hours laughing about life and praising God for all the GRACE showering and even tempesting just to keep you in the path of hope.

This is a profound, yet easy to read book - be prepared to take a deep plunge and savor life's ups and downs and stay afloat with the author's goofy and thought provoking experiences that will constantly remind you of the hope we can have in God!

I received a complimentary copy of "Epic Grace" from Tyndale Book Publishers, in exchange of an honest review. This has not biases my opinion on the book or the author.

You might wonder how a pastor could be a recovering idiot. The author, who is the pastor of Eastpoint Church in Spokane WA believes that everything he has, he was and every good part of him exists because of the unbelievable grace and goodness of God. We all have moments of idiot behavior and instead of trying to hide it from God, we need to trust that God has a plan one day at a time for our lives. The books had many endorsements and after finishing the book I can concur. Kurt Bubna is funny, observant, insightful and genuine, it is a story of how God's strength is made perfect in our weakness.

22 short nicely organized with catchy titled chapters and discussion questions for each, make this book very readable. I was very impressed with his use of QR codes in the study guide and his website which is one of the best I have seen. Technology has been used to put this together in a great book. Look at www.KurtBubna.com or www.eastpointchurch.org. He passionately believes the church is a safe place to discover grace and God's epic proportion GRACE is evidence in the well balanced Biblical stories with stories of both his human failings and missteps of others, to illustrate his point.

This is a lighthearted but deep book, I found myself in some of his stories doing some of the same unbelievable mistakes and yet the Lord forgives us. It was particularly interested to me because he has been all over the Northwest and well as on short term missionary trips to Great Britain, Central America and Asia. Down to earth, and yet so wise.

Every chapter of this book peeled away a layer of my sin and disobedience, revealing more of Gods love, forgiveness, and grace. To be more precise...Epic Grace. Through personal life experiences Kurt Bubna leads the reader to a greater understanding of grace. Proving, without question, that forgiveness is a one on one issue. Gods ability to love and extend grace is beyond our puny minds comprehension. Yet, He continues to do just that.

Epic Grace, in each succeeding chapter, opened the door a little further into understanding that there is no life experience, good or bad, that is not surrounded by the Grace of God. Personal stories, that often matched my own personal experiences, abound in this collection. Bubna shows the direct relationship between the purpose God has for us and the relationship He wants with us. I found myself ROTFL (rolling on the floor laughing) at some of his anecdotes and my heart breaking with compassion and empathy at others.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is desiring a closer relationship with our Lord. As you read and relate to Kurt Bubna's life walk I guarantee it will leave your concepts of God's incredible love, grace, and forgiveness, changed.

“Hey, Janet! Have you read this yet? It looks interesting. Did you like it?” my husband asked, holding up Epic Grace. I had earned the book through the Tyndale Rewards Program but hadn’t gotten to it yet. I decided it was time.

A few days later I learned it was on Tyndale’s Summer Reading Program list. Bonus!

Whatever journey I took to get around to reading this book, I’m glad I did. Now I’m recommending it to my family. I’m happy to recommend it to you, too.

Author Kurt Bubna writes of God’s grace from every angle. He encourages readers to receive it, to share it, to offer it, to live it. He applies it to every aspect of life: marriage, parenting, habits, finances. The subtitle explains the content well: Chronicles of a Recovering Idiot (translation: a sinner saved by grace). Bubna shares stories from his life, from the Bible, and from people he’s come to know along the way to help us understand each idea he presents. He presents solid truth with a gentle sense of humor that makes it easy to read and grasp. Two recurring themes of the book are trust God and encourage each other. It’s all about appreciating and sharing God’s grace.

Twenty-two short chapters and a discussion guide written by a pastor, husband, father, and grandpa, Epic Grace is an easy read that’s worth your time. I’m glad my husband reminded me it was waiting on our shelf.

I assumed it would be a light read. A simple testimony on how one has grabbed hold and clung on tight while being flipped upside down. That's what grace does, after all, in epic proportions. And I was intrigued to know if the author's experience was similar to my own...or worse.

What I enjoyed most about this book was that the author felt like my next door neighbor. I really appreciated the real life, personal examples Kurt Bubna shared. And the journey this life has lead him on provides many. I could relate to each one. Some hit too close to home for comfort. Others made me grateful for my own path a bit more.

So if you're like me...if you need to cling tightly to the lifeline that grace is. If you desire to feel you're not alone in the battle. If you realize you are far from perfect yet He loves you anyway -- this book is for you. If you struggle relating to your neighbor and seeing how hopeless we are without epic grace, I'd put this book on hold. It's not written to convince you. It's written more to show you you were right all along. Grace truly is amazing.

In this refreshingly honest book, pastor and author Kurt Bubna shares personal stories of his struggles and failures in life, and how God brought him through it all with love and grace. Bubna explains that life’s most valuable and lasting lessons are often learned in the dark valleys of defeat and despair, and shares how he learned to “grow” through his struggles and to put his faith in a caring Father.

Written with humility and a good deal of humor, Epic Grace is a wonderfully inspiring book that reminds us that God loves despite our shortcomings and the foolish things we do -that’s the true nature of God’s grace. As Bubna so brilliantly states: “Most important, I’ve learned that God loves idiots- including the one behind the face I see in the mirror each morning.”

I think this book ties in nicely with another book I recently reviewed, Honest To God by Josh Weidmann, focusing on staying real with God to have a genuine relationship with Him. A wonderfully inspiring read!

Epic grace is filled with just that - grace from start to finish. Kurt Bubna's open and honest tone compels you closer to God, naturally throughout the entire work. Moments of humor and moments of sorrow brush against each other, both revealing that God has made His dwelling among us and more than anything loves us like crazy. From parenting to marriage to personal behavior, Bubna examines a life in faith and how the choices we make truly do matter and impact not only ourselves but those we surround ourselves with on a regular basis.

"Grace is better seen than heard." is a lesson we all know. Kurt Bubna opens his heart and his life to show just how amazing God's grace is and how it chases us until we finally open our hearts up to it.

Kurt's personal tone and accessibility will certainly build a personal connection with his readership. You're not reading a book, you're sitting across the table from Kurt sharing a cup of coffee and hearing his story unfold. You'll zip through the chapters quickly as you tuck away nuggets of wisdom for your own personal journey. When the book concludes, you just might find your load a little bit lighter and your soul more at rest.

Epic Grace by Kurt W. Bubna is part memoir, part spiritual help/Christian living book. Each chapter relates a tidbit or story from Bubna's life, then he explains how God's grace brought him through or was shown to him, and how Christians can apply that concept of grace in their own lives. He emphasizes God's unconditional love and grace throughout. He shares his stories openly and honestly and it's a very "real" book. Written simply, it's a book for everyone looking to learn more about God's grace, and it's not written in "Christianese" like some such books are.

I really enjoyed this books. Some of Bubna's stories were funny and some were sad, but through all of them I could see myself, because I mess up a lot, too! It's refreshing to read a book where a pastor isn't afraid to admit his mistakes and failures and get real. I've noticed there have been so many books written on grace lately, and this is a good one to add to the collection. It's a good message for today, where some churches focus so much on outward appearance and the judgement of God. It's nice to read an uplifting book about God's grace. I recommend this book to any Christian looking for a fresh take on grace.

Epic Grace is a well-written book deserving all 5 stars. It is one I will revisit often. Kurt Bubna’s writing style made my reading time seem like a conversation between 2 friends sharing a Diet Coke. He paints a panorama of his personal experiences, and shows how God’s grace covered each one like maple syrup over a stack of hot pancakes. Grace is good stuff. I need to be reminded that God’s love for me is not dependent on my performance. God loves people just because.

Some religious writers write like religious writers, often from a lofty pedestal of spiritual achievement. In Epic Grace, Bubna is down to earth and lets us peer into his heart and soul. We know what he experienced, how he felt, and what he learned. I found myself shaking my head in agreement many times as I recalled my past. Bubna writes with a loving pastor’s heart and a desire to share his past, warts and all, to help readers in the present and the future. It is great to know I am not alone in my struggles.

I found the book, Epic Grace, to be a humorous and captivating read. Once I started reading this book, I had a hard time putting it down. Pastor Kurt’s writing leads me to believe not only does he have a good sense of humor and down-to-earth attitude, but also a strong faith in God. Between the laughter, I saw pearls of wisdom in each chapter and the thing that stuck me the most is the feeling that no matter what someone has done in the past, God is always willing to forgive and extend to them grace. Many of the mistakes that the author admitted to making are some of the same struggles and mistakes that I and others I know have made and I found this book to be refreshing because of the message of hope found in the book. This is a must-read for not only Christians, but also those who do not know the Lord. I would also like to encourage anyone looking for a good book about God’s grace to read this one: it should not disappoint.

Grace is hard to define and clearly put into words, yet at the same time, it is very easy to appreciate when you travel the intimate road that leads to a true relationship with God. In taking steps to move closer toward God's heart, I was suprisingly led to Kurt Bubna's book, Epic Grace. Once I began reading Epic Grace, I really did not want to put the book down. I saw myself in the words of Mr. Bubna so easily. If you have a chance to read this book, do so. You will be touched in more ways than one.

Kurt Bubna's many personal experiences and explanations helped further my understanding of the importance of grace. It's like he said, "If you haven't figured it out by now, the words GRACE, LOVE, and FORGIVENESS are nearly synonymous."

For me, one of the biggest takeaways was the description of the seasons of love: romance, trouble, disillusionment, joy. I had never heard of love described in this manner. That chapter alone was an extra special blessing that arrived at the perfect time in my life.

Since the material was presented in a funny and honest way, the book was a very fast read. I highly recommend it!

This is a great collection of first person anecdotes that come straight from Bubna's heart.
He has an excellent grasp on the concept of "writing voice" and you'll find yourself laughing out loud at some of his honest revelations. Of course, don't be surprised if you're crying on the next page. It's just that sort of book.
If you have a difficult time understanding and accepting God's grace, read this book. If you need encouragement to walk closer to the Lord, read this book. If you're looking for a non-traditional devotional. You guessed it: read the book.

“I hope by now you’ve figured out that I live with a strong conviction that life is filled with many opportunities to learn and grow along the way. What happens during our journey is meant to carve, mold and shape us into the men and women we are meant to be.” Kurt Bubna writes a great book to give encouragement to all. As he details his painful past he also points to the savior who forgives and uses events in our lives to shape us. But Mr. Bubna doesn’t just tell about difficult moments in his life, he also infuses the entire book with humor. I really enjoyed this book.

As one who tends to dance in grace (balanced with truth), it's easy to approach grace like a familiar routine. So familiar I go on autopilot. Kurt Bubna, in Epic Grace, gently shakes the reader. "No, no, remember the gift that grace is. Remember that there is no corner of your life that grace can't reach, that grace can't breathe life into." I still dance in grace, but after reading this, all the more fully!

Cassandra's Review - Epic Grace is a great book to look into yourself and reflect while reading through the stories of Kurt's writings. I was able to read through them and get a sense of relief for some of the things that I could relate to doing in my own life in one way or another. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did. Kurt really reminds me that God is so good!

I received a complimentary copy of Epic Grace from Tyndale House Publishers.

Epic Grace: Chronicles of a Recovering Idiot by Kurt W. Bubna is an interesting book, even if the author does have a tendency to overuse the phrase “epic grace.” He is real & open with his past mistakes & lessons learned. It wasn’t life-changing for me, but it was a good read. There’s a discussion guide at the end, but it would have been nice to read the questions at the end of each chapter.

The author shows that grace is necessary, not only at the beginning of the Christian life, but throughout life. He is brutally honest in sharing his own experiences of failure and showing how the grace of God was there in his greatest times of need. The author has a good sense of humor. The book would be beneficial to every reader.

Honest, practical, demystifying - God's grace for mere mortals

He is honest and real about his faith in a good and very real God. His practical life experiences intermingled with scripture opens the door to authentic and powerful Christianity. Not for the self-righteous or hypocrites, this one is for all us sick ones that Jesus came for. Yay God!

I absolutely loved this book! I read it in two days. It gives a fresh, fun look on the topic of grace. It was entertaining and informational at the same time. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

Not really a biography, but a collection of stories--many biographical--about the way grace works out in real life. The author is very open about his good moments and his idiot moments, and sounds like he would make a great neighbor. Humble and realistic, yet encouraging and uplifting.

Nice title, but on the whole it doesn't live up to it.
It does, however, have one redeeming chapter that explores "why you should never trust anyone that doesn't have a (metaphorical) limp"!
Apart from that it's just another book; nothing special.
