Red Tail Feather is equal parts memoir and faith-based guide, as Wendi Lou Lee uses episodes from her life to craft spiritual lessons in finding Grace.
Together with her twin sister, Lee portrayed "Baby Grace" on the television series Little House on the Prairie . Her account of her experiences on Little House -- gleaned from her own tender formative memories and her mother's storytelling -- are sweet and entertaining, but are only the earliest years in Lee's young life. The majority of her book is about her life after Hollywood and Little House , as an ordinary girl and woman -- not a celebrity or performer.
Lee writes beautifully -- with grace -- about how she came through the small and the most devastating experiences: from not fitting in and every day fears to parental loss and her brain tumor diagnosis and surgery. Lee's optimistic spirit is joyful and uplifting, and her perspective inspiring. She gracefully allows herself and us space for mistakes, pain, fear, and grief, while also finding forgiveness, acceptance, opportunity, and blessings. The memoir is then followed up with testaments by other people, portraying how they have discovered God's grace in the hardest times in their lives.
Despite being a Christian faith-based perspective, Lee's life lessons are universally relatable. She offers her readers strength, comfort, gratitude, and kindness. Some readers may, at times, less personally connect with the more Christianized language and specific teachings that Lee relates to her life lessons, particularly, if the reader does not share Lee's religious faith. There are moments, too, when individual agency in our ability to create and act with grace seem to be subsumed by God's Grace, and when tragedy walks the line of being presented as a gift or a lesson. But, on the whole, Lee focuses on the opportunity to find the grace, learning, and blessings in our own circumstances. Her tone is reassuring, empowering, and hopeful.
Lee is the embodiment of that higher Grace, and palpably radiates with her authentic kindness, compassion, and generous spirit with lively animation, yet balancing soothing calm. She's one of those people who it feels good to be around, even virtually though a book's pages. It was a true pleasure to listen to her narrate the audio edition. This is a book that I know I will return to again and again (especially the memoir portion based on Lee's own life lessons).
A heartfelt thank you for sharing you grace with us!
