Regina Linke is a Taiwanese American artist specializing in Chinese gongbi-style painting, an ancient form of brush painting that depicts narrative subjects in colorful high detail. She enjoys writing and illustrating stories that celebrate East Asian folklore and philosophy in a modern way. Regina lives with her family in Rhode Island, in the United States.

if you are a fan of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy, Big Panda and Tiny Dragon by James Norbury, Buddha Doodles by Molly Hahn or even Winnie the Pooh, this is for you. this was absolutely brilliant. the art is stunning, gorgeous, show stopping. i was more awestruck with every page i turned. the quotes are so profound and seem like something we all collectively believe intrinsically but sometimes, reading it is what you need for it to hit you in the feels. it utilises the gongbi style of art, something that i have not seen much of before so i was absolutely mesmerized. i recommened this to everyone that is looking for a short, mesmerizing collection of parables that examines life through the lenses of taoism, buddhism and confucianism to connect to and resonate with.

In dit boek maak je kennis met drie vrienden: de nieuwsgierige jonge ossenhoeder die aan het begin van zijn leven staat en de wereld aan het ontdekken is, de sterke os die al veel heeft meegemaakt, aanspoort tot vriendelijkheid en rust uitstraalt, en het ijverige konijn, dat zich bezighoudt met hoe we voor elkaar zorgen. Gebaseerd op confucianisme, taoïsme en boeddhisme, De Drie Leren, de drie pijlers van de Chinese filosofie, representeren de personages allemaal een andere stroming en gaan ze met elkaar in gesprek, delen ze wijsheden, bekijken ze de wereld door verschillende brillen en helpen ze elkaar.

De korte, doeltreffende en doordachte teksten en de mooie, serene en verfijnde illustraties in de traditionele gongbi-stijl (een techniek in de Chinese schilderkunst voor het maken van realistische afbeeldingen) vullen elkaar sterk aan en houden je aandacht vast en dit is dan ook een boek dat je meerdere malen doorbladert om de verschillende rollen van de vrienden steeds beter te begrijpen en om telkens nieuwe details te ontdekken. Het boek bevat inspirerende wijsheden en een hartverwarmende boodschap die iedereen wel kan gebruiken en daardoor is dit een ideaal cadeau, ook voor jezelf!

The Oxherd Boy has beautiful drawings, but barely scratches the surface of Buddhism & Taoism. The writings are too beginner-level to be profound, too mainstream. Linke could have gone so much deeper and actually teach people about these beliefs instead of reiterating the same platitudes one can find in any popular magazine on Yoga or Zen.

Very much similar to The Boy The Mole The Fox and The Horse by Charlie Mackesy, you can consider this as another version which has wisdom and life lessons from everyday walks of life. A little boy learns valuable lessons from the ox and his surroundings. I find the illustrations quite calming. The writing is minimal but wholesome. Choose this book for bedtime stories and for group reads. It will be the best!

Regina Linke kan het verschil maken. Met 'De reis van de jonge ossenhoeder' maakt ze het verschil. Regina Linke is een Taiwanees-Amerikaanse kunstenaar en is gespecialiseerd in de hedendaagse Chinese gongbi-schilderkunst: een oudere oosterse vorm van zeer verfijnd en stijlvol penseelschilderen. Ze wilde een boek uitgeven voor haar zoontje. Een boek dat antwoorden geeft op allerlei grote vragen - over leven en dood, liefde en angst, eerlijkheid en vergevingsgezindheid, over wat het betekent om mens te zijn. Dat werd dít boek.

A heartwarming Chinese fable of a little boy, an ox and a rabbit. They teach eachother lessons along the way. One of my favorite lines went like this - "Sometimes," responded the ox, "when we say we want to be happy, what we really want is to be healed." Another line is "Don't be afraid of going slowly," comforted the rabbit. "Only be afraid to stand still."

It was a great book. I will be purchasing it in our library once it is released in March of 2024. Thank you NetGalley and Regina Linke for the ARC of The Oxherd Boy.

Voor de lezers van De jongen, de mol, de vos en het paard is er een nieuw boek om je over te verwonderen. Namelijk De reis van de jonge ossenhoeder van Regina Linke. Regina Linke kun je kennen van haar Instagramaccount @oxherdboy en is een Taiwanees-Amerikaanse kunstenaar. Ze is gespecialiseerd in hedendaagse Chinese gongbi-schilderkunst en gebruikte deze kunstwijze om dit prachtige boek vorm te geven. Haar zoontje begon vragen te stellen waarop Regina het antwoord niet wist en waarbij Regina werd geconfronteerd met haar eigen onwetenheid. Om die reden is ze toen gestart met het schrijven en illustreren van De reis van de jonge ossenhoeder.

In dit boek maak je kennis met drie vrienden: de jonge ossenhoeder, een os en een konijn. Deze drie vrienden zijn gebaseerd op de drie pijlers van de Chinese filosofie. De jonge ossenhoeder helpt zijn familie op de rijstplantage en krijgt hierbij steun van de os. De jongen is het beeld van kinderlijke onschuld, stelt vele vragen, toont zijn zwakheden, is regelmatig bang maar is ook in staat om zijn vrienden gerust te stellen. De os is één en al vriendelijkheid en steunt zijn vrienden onvoorwaardelijk. Met zijn rustige houding en wijze woorden laat hij zijn vrienden met een andere bril naar de wereld kijken. Verderop in het boek wordt kennisgemaakt met het konijn. Het konijn is actief en stelt vragen wat betreft onze aanwezigheid op de wereld. Gezamenlijk zorgen de drie vrienden voor elkaar.

De illustraties in dit boek zijn echt adembenemend mooi. Ze zijn rustgevend, brengen de emoties goed over en zijn ook nog eens onwijs realistisch. Je kan de os en het konijn haast aaien, zo zacht lijken ze op de illustraties. Regelmatig zitten er ook illustraties tussen zonder tekst en hierop valt van alles te zien. Alleen deze prachtige wijze van illustraties zorgt ervoor dat je je kan blijven verwonderen.

Daar helpt de prachtige tekst ook bij. Prachtige, filosofische uitingen waar je hoop, geluk, liefde en vriendschap uit kunt halen. Het is tekst dat je tot nadenken zet, tot rust brengt en even alles om je heen vergeet. Het is tekst dat je kan raken, pijn uit het diepste van je ziel omhoog kan halen. Maar voel je gesteund door de jonge ossenhoeder, de os en het konijn en hun wijze woorden. Maar laat je bovenal verwonderen!

De reis van de jonge ossenhoeder is een mooi cadeau, een boek dat er regelmatig bij gepakt kan worden om een paar bladzijden uit te lezen. Een boek voor op het bijzettafeltje of op het nachtkastje. Zeker een prachtig boek om in huis te hebben!

I wasn't familiar with gongbi, a detailed style of Chinese brush painting. That's what this graphic novel about the conversations of a little boy, a rabbit and an ox.

As the author's introduction says, the boy's character is inspired by Taoism (he looks at the world without judging right from wrong), the ox by Buddhism (he knows we all experience suffering and thus are capable of compassion) and the rabbit by Confucianism (she is concerned with how we look after each other here on Earth).

What you notice at first is the beauty of the illustrations. They are easily the most moving, gentle, loving and powerful images I've seen in a book for quite some time.

From there, the book is a series of vignettes without much, if any, transition at times as the boy and the rabbit notice things to talk about.

Sometimes statements are made on a blank page, such as The most difficult choice we can make is whether to be accepted for what we are not, or seen for who we truly are.

Others appear with illustrations that words cannot describe adequately. For example, there's a page that shows the oxherd boy holding the rabbit in his arms. Tenderness and love emanates from the page. It includes these words: What's important is not how much we do, but how much we love. So let's do what inspires us to love.

The words are direct but not aggressive, judge-y or preachy as often happens with books that talk about compassion, love or community. This book simply is compassion, love and community.

I've no idea the intended age range for this book. It's written in a way that a young child could enjoy it, especially with a parent reading it aloud. But it's also perfect for an adult who likes simple books with a classic feel on how to be, aka contemplative wisdom. In the acknowledgments, the author mentions feeling a part of the community of Hindu spirituality, Stoic philosophy and Sufi poetry. That's the sense I got, too.

O tejto knižke sa nedá písať, musíte si ju prečítať. Dá sa to stihnúť na posedenie. Alebo vám to môže trvať mesiace aj roky. Sú to totiž jednoduché kratučké texty o chlapcovi, byvolovi a králikovi, skrývajú v sebe ale hlboké myšlienky vychádzajúce z tisícov rokov čínskej filozofie.

Traja kamaráti spolu hľadajú odpovede na otázky o živote a smrti, láske, bolesti, strachu, úsilí či vďačnosti. O maličkostiach, ktoré majú veľký význam. O veciach či udalostiach, ktoré sa nám môžu zdať negatívne, no vieme na nich nájsť aj veľa pozitívneho, ak sme ochotní pozrieť sa na ne z iného uhla pohľadu. O šťastí. Sú to také tie krásne úvahy, ku ktorým sa človek môže pravidelne vracať a vždy v nich objaví niečo nové.

Ako vysvetľuje autorka - taiwansko-americká umelkyňa Regina Linke, výber postáv nie je náhodný. Predstavujú harmóniu troch náuk, ktoré sú piliermi čínskej filozofie. Taoizmu, ktorý si zakladá na rovnováhe vo svete, budhizmu ako zdroju láskavosti a súcitu, a konfucionizmu, ktorý sa snaží zabezpečiť, aby sme sa jeden o druhého zaujímali a starali.

Texty nádherne dopĺňajú ilustrácie, ktoré sú na jednej strane jemné a minimalistické, a na druhej idú do úplných detailov.

Tento typ knihy je ideálnym univerzálnym darčekom. Zaujme deti aj dospelých, knihomoľov aj nečitateľov.

De prachtig geïllustreerde cover laat je al even stoppen om beter te kijken naar de cover van het prachtige en mooie boek. Het is zonder meer een boek waarbij je al aan de cover ziet dat er zorg, liefde en aandacht is besteed aan dit bijzondere boek. Aangezien ik ook De jongen, de mol, de vos en het paard gelezen heb en daarvan erg onder de indruk was, ben ik erg benieuwd naar dit boek van Regina.

Een jonge ossenhoeder, een os en een konijn die samen in een tuin leven, navigeren elkaar voor het dagelijkse leven. Het verhaal verwijst naar zingeving en is gebaseerd op De Drie Leren, de drie pijlers van de Chinese filosofie: confucianisme, taoïsme en boeddhisme. De jonge ossenhoeder is geïnspireerd op het taoïsme, de os bekijkt de wereld met een boeddhistische rol en het ijverige konijn vertegenwoordigt het confucianisme. Door middel van gesprekken en boodschappen onderzoeken ze samen de wereld. Ze redden een mus uit de storm, steken een rivier over, helpen grootvader op het land of doen juist helemaal niets. Het verhaal bevat boodschappen over acceptatie, vriendschap, tederheid en mededogen.

Dit bijzondere, mooie en inspirerende boek, roept gelijk verstilling en rust bij je op als je begint te lezen.

De tekeningen van Regina Linke zit het in de fijnheid en details van haar bijzondere illustraties. Het zijn echt beelden waarvoor je de tijd neemt om de boodschap van het beeld bij je binnen te laten komen. De summiere teksten waarover duidelijk is nagedacht vormen een krachtige aanvulling op de illustraties. Ik vind het bijzonder hoe Regina Linke drie personages heeft neergezet die alle drie op totaal sterke en eigen wijze naar het leven kijken en daar hun invullen aan geven. Hiermee toont Regina Linke mooie inzichten en boodschappen over het leven.

Het is een boek dat geschikt is voor alle leeftijden en een boek dat je ook nog regelmatig zal openslaan. Het laat je over verschillende vlakken en door de verschillende inzichten van de personages echt over het leven nadenken. Vanuit welk gezichtspunt bekijk jij de wereld?

De reis van de jonge ossenhoeder is een mooi, bijzonder, origineel en inspirerend verhaal dat via drie verschillende pijlers van de Chinese filosofie het leven bekijkt door de reis die de jonge ossenhoeder, de os en het konijn maken. Het verhaal bevat prachtige en bijzondere illustraties die in hedendaagse Chinese gongbi-schilderkunst gemaakt zijn. Echt een aanrader!

"The Oxherd Boy" is a very cute and short comic illustrated in the traditional style mainly targeted at children. I can imagine parents reading this with their kids. For me, it was short and enjoyable, the drawings were cool and the quite old Chinese story with talking animals. It was just wholesome and heart warming really. The didactics were hidden well enough.

This book is absolutely lovely and beautiful. The artwork and the prose, both. I read it three times and don't want to return it to my library!

als cadeau gekregen en wat een prachtig verhaal! doet erg denken aan de jongen, de mol, de vos en het paard (aka mn lievelingsboek). prachtige quotes.

'angst is iets heel normaals. door er vriendelijk tegen te zijn zul je 'm altijd overwinnen.'

A young boy, an ox, and a rabbit move together about their village and the surrounding countryside. As the boy tends to his chores, or relaxes afterwards, the three share their perspectives on community, respect and kindness.

Though similar to “The Boy The Mole The Fox and The Horse by Charlie Mackesy”, I found this quiet, meditative book much more engaging and meaningful. The paintings alone by author/illustrator Regina Linke are breathtaking, while also promoting a terrific sense of calm.

The text is minimal, and leaves one pondering and reflecting on life, and how one treats others, and the value of compassion. It was just what I needed to read after a difficult week, and I anticipate returning to this book periodically when I need to be reminded of its gentle and affecting messages.

What a sweet and beautiful tale rooted in Chinese philosophy.
We follow a young boy trying to understand his feelings in a strange world while he is being meaningful lessons by the smartest Ox and rabbit I've ever seen.
This is a lovely book for anyone having a hard day or a hard week.

Regina Linke bestows on us a luxuriously illustrated book of proverbs and parables to encourage us to look at the world and our experiences with fresh eyes, and mostly not to live life on our own. We can learn from each other. We can see new things when we listen to others and ask good questions.

This book is perfect for fans of the older “Tao of Pooh” (Benjamin Hoff) or the more-recent “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” (Charlie Mackesy) or Simon Sinek’s simple “Together is Better.”

Being connected with family, friends and strangers (soon-to-be friends) is what makes life rich. For those tempted by the new fad of couples taking separate vacations, this book will dissuade you of that. Because we are different, our shared experience is all the richer..

We are thankful that Linke did not give up though a teacher once said she would not master a particular art form. She provides tableaus that encourage us to explore what is or is not happening for the people, animals, objects depicted..

🤔De auteur heeft wijsheden uit het confucianisme, boeddhisme en taoïsme meegenomen in de woorden van het konijn, de jonge ossenhoeder en de os. De tekeningen vanuit gongbi-schilderkunst zijn natuurlijk ook prachtig.
