Princess In Distress Even when a towering, muscular man swept her upon his horse, Lady Nichole Lucretia was certain her Swiss castle was impenetrable. Surely her guards would easily take down her assailant and punish him for his arrogance. But when the laughing kidnapper succeeded in stealing her away, the raven-haired aristocrat was furious. She punched and bit, struggled and kicked...yet even as she tried to escape him, her flesh sensed he was a most magnificent man - the one who would make her feel all woman!
Bold Conquering King Jonpaul the Terrible was known for his imaginative fighting, his clever strategies--and his tireless lust. And when he learned the Lady Nichole's people were planning to take up arms against his own armies, the handsome daredevil decided to ask her about it himself. But once he had the slender beauty in his arms, Jonpaul didn't want to waste his time with words. All he wanted was to rule her body, her heart and her will, and to dominate her this night and the next, Forever and a Lifetime.
A medieval bodice-ripper set in...Switzerland? Okay, that got my attention, as did a heroine descended from the Medici. It all started out pretty great, with much swashbuckling, a convent abduction, and political intrigue between warring princedoms in a divided land.
But after 300 or so pages of a TSTL hellion of a heroine who was not giving a small hint of evolution, and the very tiresome plot device of having a mysterious piece of paper acting as the MacGuffin for this tedious plot, I was done. I wish Queen Cersei had walked into the throne room and taught them a thing or two about the importance of a piece of paper.
Liked: 1. The H is the star of this book! He was charming alpha male. He was just brilliant! Top 10 best H for me!
2. The setting was fantastic! This was my 1st hr set all in Switzerland. I learned some interesting history. The politics and superstition were new to me.
3. I liked the superstition/fantasy element. How the h healed through her old religion was interesting.
4. The villains were well developed. There was a part of me wishing the h's brother was innocent. He is worse than I thought. Our 2nd villain was too realistic.
5. I loved the children!
Didn't like: This would have been a 5 star book if not for the h. Well, not so much the h but the h's innocent belief in her brother. She believes the H is evil no matter what the evidence. She holds onto these ideas for the WHOLE book. If she had accepted the truth early on, this would have been a great book. Instead, I just wanted the H to give the idiot back.
Conclusion: The history and other characters make for an enriching story. I highly recommend this book!
Handsome Swiss Hero, Strong Heroine and a Great Story!
This is my second by Horsman and it’s another wonderful story. This one has an amazingly complex plot set in an interesting time in history with well-developed characters, sexy love scenes and a hero, who is very virile, and at times a cad. This one also features the usual cats, vegetarians and mystical aspects that seem to characterize her romances.
What I like about Horsman’s stories is that they are richly detailed and give me that intense feeling that keeps me turning pages. I like her strong heroines, too (none of those whiny females!).
Set in Switzerland in the late 15th century when the country was a loose confederation of independent small states called cantons, it tells about the time of Charles the Bold, Lord of Lucerne, who came to power in 1467. He is seeking to grow in power, but Bern sees this as a threat. In this story, our heroine, Lady Nichole Lucretia, Charles’ sister and a great healer, is being forced by her brother to marry the Duke of Uri to gain Charles another army. Nichole judges the duke to be an unjust and cruel man, and loving her people and being a headstrong and intelligent young woman, she refuses.
Charles imprisons her in an abbey to pressure her into complying but she isn’t there long when Jonpaul the Terrible abducts her. Jonpaul is the hero of the Burgundy War, the leader of the Basel Alliance—and their enemy. The Alliance wants to thwart Charles’ plans and they know defeating Nichole’s marriage will further their goal for peace. Jonpaul takes Nichole to his castle where she tries to resist the man even as she seeks escape. Theirs is a relationship of great passion and great conflict, as two strong personalities come together.
There is great history, great passion and great deception—deception that is believable when it comes from someone you love. I highly recommend it.
I read this a few months ago, but I found this in a box of books I was donating to a local book store and it made me angry just thinking about it. I found this waste of ink and paper at a library booksale, It was 50 cents...
I still want my money back.
I guess the plot of was interesting enough, and unqiue for a romance novel. Set in Medieval times, magic and witchcraft, handsome knights etc... But the writing was awful. I had no clue what was going on half the time because it was so choppy and fragmented and jumpy. When I read a cheesy romance novel, I want something fun, not a headache.
Repetitive writing, obnoxious characters, and WAY TOO LONNNGGGGG.
I liked the overall storyline but the love scenes fell short of my liking. They lacked depth. My biggest pet peeve in romance novels is when they write a beautiful build up, then the scene ends with... They made love. What?! The author sets you up for an amazing heart stopping love scene.... Then, nothing. This happened numerous times in this book and I was so annoyed I could t finish it. However, her other book, Magic Embrace was one of my favorites. So, I was hugely disappointed with this one as I expected to have a close warm and fuzzy feeling like with her other books.
I first read this book in the 90's and I loved it then. It had an original setting (Switzerland) and an almost Historical Fantasy like setting. (I'm not judging on historical accuracy, it's fiction.) I really liked the main characters and the plot except for the forced seduction which was acceptable at the time of writing. Romance with Fantasy elements were rare in the 80's and 90's so much is forgiven. The laws and justice was interesting and I won't go into too much details as I wish to avoid spoilers.
The heroine wished to give alms to beggars and was told that there were no beggars. She feared that they were put to death.
As a bodice- ripper enthusiast I can't believe I've been sleeping on this gem. The characters were rich and multi-dimensional, and all of their actions and beliefs had a logical reason instead of being irrational for the sake of drama. The writing was also incredible (except for literally one paragraph in the beginning in which a physical description felt forced), and I found many beautiful quotes. I loved to get to know Nanna's character through Nichole's memories, which were introduced in a very natural manner, and I found myself reflecting upon her "words of wisdom", specially those regarding the Church and its problematics, some of them still present to this day. Nichole's belief system was richly constructed, and personally, it felt reminiscent of Antigone and how women were the ones upholding spiritual traditions. If you are a fan of historical romance and bodice-rippers then I certainly recommend this book, I will definetely be reading more by Jennifer Horsman.
Nicole is a nitwit and although she sees proof daily that JonPaul isn’t the monster her disgusting self-centered evil brother portrays him to be she still believes her brother’s lies. The book is long, boring, and the chemistry between Nicole and JonPaul is barely there. Moreover, when the two finally do come together the build up is little and then cut - fade to black. What a disappointment. 👎🏽👎🏽. I labored through this awful book and in the end I’m mad I did. It wasn’t worth it. Two thumbs WAY down!!
This took me so long to read--finals and a bender and graduation and the grad bender--I enjoyed this a lot but I think had I read it at my normal pace I would be more annoyed with Nichole's inability to believe JonPaul over her brother, especially for a woman who is allegedly incredibly perceptive
Horsman knows how to write a plot -- page turner and exciting. But her execution of the story and writing of the characters are messy and chaotic. The story also tends to be dragging. It's a shame because "Forever And A Lifetime" and "Magic Embrace" are promising in its first 100 pages.
Parts of this book im not a fan off particularly the rape scene in the cave.. and then later in the book hes like it wasn't really rape because you love me and we belong together.. which is very wishy washy. she literally stabs him so he wont rape her. I get he is a hero type character and she is confused and has been lied to for a number of years etc... but no is still no, and its not my type of thing. I did however finished the book, which is why it has 2 stars and not one.
This was a relatively strange book in that it appeared to be set in switzerland in 1500-1700s and yet it had 'magical connotations'. The h,Lady Nicole is promised in marriage to an unpleasant neigbouring duke at her brother's insistence. She does not agree that this is a good match and rejects him. She blackmails her brother by referring to a secret that she does not actually know. He locks her up in a nunnery. The hero, Jonpaul the terrible, ( what a name!) discovers that his evil neighbour is in fear of something that his sister knows and kidnaps Nicole. During this event, Nicole is injured and experiences a forced seduction ( she comes to like it) at the hands of Jonpaul. They return to his province and she is threatened with torture and the death of a baby if she does not talk. Accordingly Nicole tells what she knows and there is a period when she recovers from her ordeal, tries to escape and general sexual tension between the two. In the end they have sex one more time ( this is ambiguously done) and then the brother turns up and forces the two to wed. There is a plot to kill the hero; the brother gets his Comeuppance and is killed; and there is dispute about what it was all about. They all live hea.
the story is not the most original and yet the writing is endearing and entertaining.
I don't know that I will keep this book but I may buy something else by the author
