Cortez Hunter, the modern-day whipping boy. The orphan always walked alongside the man he was destined to shadow, enjoying the wealth, the indulgences, the influence, and the opportunities of the elite. Ezra Holden Zeitler was coddled, protected, because he was the last of his family’s line. The heir would act out, and fearing Ezra’s tantrums and his mental illness, Cortez took the blame, the consequences, and the punishments.
From the outside looking in, Cortez is selfish, lazy, and untrustworthy. Cortez tries to scream the truth, but no one ever takes him seriously. Never listens. “Ezra did it!” In actuality, Cort is brutally honest while his lips twist into a charming smirk and his eyes glisten with amusement.
This life. This game. Ezra– it has all taken a toll on Cortez.
The whipping boy only ever had one thing to call his own. It was inborn, a passion for words. The latest punishment rendered Cortez blocked, left to walk an endless abyss of an empty imagination. Without Cort’s ability to delve into his imaginary worlds, he was forced to live in reality.
Lost. Confused. Cortez Hunter struggles to survive.
One simple acknowledgement frees Cortez’s frozen words. “Daddy.” The muse awakens from her long slumber, demanding Cortez go back to the beginning… Under the pseudonym Cortez Abernathy, he begins writing a memoir.
The Hunter.
As Cortez pours his soul onto the pages, he begins to heal.
No longer lost or confused, Cortez realizes he doesn’t have to walk in Ezra’s shadow. Whether beside Ezra or without Ezra, Cortez will survive.
Erica Chilson does not write in the 3rd person, wanting her readers to be her characters. Therefore, writing a bio about herself, is uncomfortable in the extreme.
Born, raised, and here to stay, the Wicked Writer is a stump-jumper, a ridge-runner. Hailing from North Central Pennsylvania, directly on the New York State border; she loves the changes in seasons, the humid air, all the mountainous forest, and the gloomy atmosphere.
Introverted, but not socially awkward, Erica prides herself on thinking first and filtering her speech. There are days she doesn’t speak at all. If it wasn’t for the fact that she lives with her parents, giving her a sense of reality, she would be a hermit, where the delivery man finds her months after expiration.
Reading was an escape, a way to leave a not-so pleasant reality behind. Reading lent Erica the courage she gathered from the characters between the pages to long for a different life. Writing was an instrument of change, evolving Erica into the woman she is today- a better, more mature, more at peace thinker.
Erica has a wicked mind, one she pours out into her creations. Her filter doesn’t allow all of it to erupt, much to her relief. Sarcastic, with a very dark, perverse sense of humor, Erica puts a bit of herself into every character she writes.
This is Cort's story. I had the honor to beta read for Erica Chilson! *Happy Dance* Cort's story is quite different from the rest of the series, we get his point of view from past and present. I didn't get Cortez, he confused me in all of the books. I couldn't relate to him, I kept thinking to myself, what in the heck is wrong with him? Why does he do the things he does? The most important question; Is he gay, straight, bisexual? I had no freakin' clue. I will gladly say, I got my answers. :) My view of Cort's character CHANGED! I want to wrap my arms around him to keep safe from everyone, including Erza. The "whipping boy," is a perfect description for Cortez, I can't believe the consequences poor Cort had to endure for other people's actions! Frustrating! I growled a few times while reading. By the end, I was completely in love with Cort, I've become very protective and almost motherly. I know, strange, right? Believe me, you have no idea what Cort went through. Anyway, moving on. The sex in this book is SMOKING HOT! *Fans Self* Goodness Gracious!!
The Ending killed me, yes a cliffhanger! HAHA, first cliffy from Erica Chilson, I rather enjoyed it. #Evil Laughter!I can't wait until the next book!!! Or the one after that, lol!
There's no denying that I'm a major Erica Chilson fan. The Mistress and Master of Restraint Series have gotten 5 stars from me across the board. The Hunter is no exception! Up to this point Cortez has protrayed himself as a selfish insensitive prick. HOT AS HELL but still a prick. Cort wanted what he wanted and didn't care who he trampled to get it. This book sheds light on why exactly that is. To say his life has been a walk in the park and he's just acting like a spoiled brat is to say sugar is not sweet. Could NOT be any further than the truth. The Hunter shows Cort in a whole new light or a least one that justifies how and why he is what he is. And that my friends is AMAZING!! Get ready to be hot and bothered, to gasp and to cheer and again to be amazed when you meet Cortez Abernathy through his story. Somebody bring me a fan!!!
OMG OMG OMG! Yes Mr. Cort is worth that and more. He's story is EPIC in all forms of the word. I have loved this series from the first word, but now there are two that just are the master pieces and this book is one of those two. Court went through it ALL for his true love, not that most the time said love returned the favor. I am so proud of him at the end of his story. I wanted to jump up and SAY YES and hug him but hmm my 7 year old would wonder why mommy is shouting over a book. LOL. Forewarning if you are scared of two people expressing love regardless of gender this book is not for you, with that said, I am not one that usually is like hey lets watch some GUY/GUY action, but Ms. Chilson you do know how to write a HOT, HOT NATUGHY scene. As well as scenes that made me cry for the love expressed between those two. I am not the girl that believes in marriage for me personally. I just don’t see it but if I had a CORT in my life you would not be able to get me to the church fast enough. (Too bad he is gay otherwise he would be my 1st book boyfriend.) Erica I cannot express enough how this character touched a part of my soul that sings someone gets it. So thank you so much for this masterpiece..
Who is the real Cortez, hell Cort doesn't even know, but soon we will find out. After a long while of having writers block, finally his muse emerges from a long slumber. With one word from his muse he is able to open that part of his mind back open.
We all know Cort as the prissy, bitchy, unfaithful lying lover to Ezra, but maybe we really didn't know him. Cort has always been the whipping-boy for everyone including the one he loved above all, while Ezra was coddled and put on a pedestal.
While writing 'The Hunter' Cort finds himself, finds his real self, the Cort that has been hiding away all this time and he is finally ready to let the real him free. Having to overcome hurdles and fix broken relationships, Cort is ready to take his life back.
In ‘The Hunter’ we get to know the real Cort and understand him so much more, while reading his words. He is ready to give himself fully to Ezra, but will it be too late? Can they overcome the hurt and betrayal they put each other through and become one again?
I enjoyed reading and getting to know the real Cortez and seeing him blossom and grow into the man he wants to be. I LOVED THIS BOOK! Cort has become one of my favorites, especially now that I know his story. Erica AKA ‘The Plot Queen’ has outdone her self again and will leave you wanting more.
Ok, This is just my own opinion. I have been on the fence and emotionally torn with this book, because even though it was not my cup of tea, it was still very well written like all of Erica's other books. I did not care for it due to all of the romance and sex, but I do understand Cortez being a romantic and sexual being, so in that perspective I can respect it for what it was intended to be. I am happy that Cortez finally found himself and stopped hiding behind his cock, but on the other hand I feel bad for Katya, because now where does she stand if Ezra chooses Cortez? I guess we will just have to wait and see. I did like the humor of Cortez when he married Divina and they went on their honeymoon. If I was to base this book off of the style in which it was written then I would have given it 4 stars, but since I am basing it purely on my own taste I have to be honest and give it what I felt it needed. Once again Erica you have out done yourself. :)
I always knew there had to more to Cort that just what meets the eye. Cort has always been on the outside looking in, never sure of his place, and never having anyone to call his own. His family has always been Ezra, and often, Ez has made him feel second best.
Cort's story, told in flashbacks from past to present and back again, give us real insight into what makes Cort tick, and the roller coaster of his life gives us a clear picture of where Cort's insecurities came from.
I have been waiting for this book for a while, and am glad that Cort has finally found peace within himself and the family that he has created and embraced. Cort is stronger than he appears as is the love for his family.
Erica you have outdone yourself again. I fell in love with Cortez in Restraint but there have been some times I have wanted to smack him around. I couldn't wait for this book to finally see what he was thinking and acting like he was. Now it makes more sense!, granted I am left with more questions but I have more of an understanding of Cortez. This has made me fall for him all over again. I cannot wait for Ezra's book to find out what the hell is going through that head of his. LOVE THIS SERIES! By far one of my favorites!
It took me a while to get into the Hunter, I past and present sex scenes without a whole lot of plot. Cort has a sensitive side, who knew?! I still don't feel like we got to know him as well as the others. I can't wait to read Ezra and Grants books now, but I'm confused a bit. I just went back and read restraint and unleashed, having more background, Marcus never acted on his 'true nature'. Also confused reading Ezra's bit at the end of king again, when talking to Syn he calls Ava his firstborn? Am I over thinking it here?
absolutely love this series. Erica is a master mind! I never really got Cort, never really understood what his problem was. I get him now. it was such a heart wrenching story to hear about what Ray did to them when he had them. I was a little nervous going in to this book because it was a past/present read, but I loved it! Its definitely one of my favorites of the series. the love Cort has for his family is just heart warming. The love he has for Ez...I don't even know what to call it. I hope to have that some day! and my god, the sex!! hot hot hot!
I have to say that I got a little bit of flashback whiplash with this one. Please don't hate but its the truth. I feel like Ms. Chilson strayed from her writing style with this one.
Don't get me wrong I did quite enjoy this book but I found all the timelines to be quite confusing. Now did I like Cort's story of course, does the story progress, does the game progress YES, which is exactly why I am giving this 4 stars. But I really thought that I would have enjoyed this one more. Feeling slightly underwhelmed. But I am continuing on I am big fan of Erica Chilson's work.
“If you love something, you need to fight for it.”
That quote taken from the book is the essence of what this book is about.
The Hunter was lovely to read. It was full of angst, and a love that, well ran so deep that it never stopped flowing. I really enjoyed the book. I cried and I loved and I questioned right along with Cort.
I highly recommend it if you are a fellow lover of the M&M series.
• Note: This book should not be read out of order.
I want to start off by saying that I love, love, love this series. With that being said this book was my least favorite. Don't get me wrong it was still really good, but I guess I just wanted more out of Cort. It was probably because he is such a big part of the other books that he was already filled out as a certain character in my mind and I had a hard time excepting who he really was. Erica Chilson is an awesome author with a great mind for crazy. I always love me some crazy.
Ahhhhh!!! Ok who did Neil knock up?? Is Katya being kicked outta the marriage?? Is Marcus going to become obsessed with Cort?? Omgggg I need the next book, I need to feed the addiction. I love it. :)
