[Hello, For my own (author) thoughts, please see my blog. I thought it would be more useful to re-post the following review, originally left on Amazon.com by a Colorado reader] ::Begin Quote:: Reviewer Rating: 5 stars ***** Review Title: A Work of Art I long considered how to introduce my boys to poetry. The Bubble Collector was the perfect choice. My boys read at about a 3rd and 6th grade level so they now prefer to read books on their own. However, I thought this one would be the perfect way to get back to the fun we had when they wanted Dad to read to them. I knew this one was a hit because after about 45 minutes of laughing hysterically and it was time for bed they pleaded, "Please, please, pretty please, one more page!" I woke up the next morning to the kids again laughing with their mother. They didn't want to wait for me to wake up to read it. My boy jokingly asked, "Dad, can you get my ear back?" (A reference to the first poem.) The amazing part is that my 5 year old wants me to set him up for the punch lines which he recites from memory. The humor and rhyme seem to make it easy for him to remember. They've been re-reading it every day for the last week. The book is setup with a number of poems where the punch line is often embedded in the illustrations. When they reached the titular poem, the boys decided to go back and look at all the other illustrations to see if they could find the bubbles. The illustrations are extremely well done. Some of the writing is over their heads but they don't seem to mind. However, they do ask for explanations. In my opinion, this is not a kid's book. This is a humorous poetry book that kids will enjoy. The book gave us a chance to talk about levels of meaning in poetry. I explained the word allegory and then used the specific bubble collector poem as an example. I asked them what they thought the bubbles meant. They surprised me and said, "Dreams. He's chasing his dreams." This book is truly a wonderful dream. -An Amazon Verified Purchaser from Colorado ::End Quote::
The Bubble Collector is a collection of hilarious poems that everyone will enjoy. Every topic you can think of is covered! From a list of what not to put down your shirt to a love story between the really old and really stale stuff found in the back of the refrigerator. The Bubble Collector will get you laughing!
I really enjoy reading poetry. Funny poetry is especially great to read, especially when it is done well. This book is a great example of that. The rhyme is very good and each poem reads well. The selection of different types of poetry too (e.g. haiku and limericks). The cheerful illustrations in the book add a lot to the text too. Mr. Madan wrote and illustrated a very fun poetry book any kid would enjoy! *NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
