Chigiri opts to take matters in his own hands when it comes to Tezuka’s arrangement with Kisaragi, but it turns out the two boys have close ties to one another. Lots of romance ensues, but I’m going to scream if I have to see the words “pretend feelings” ever again.
As much as Ran the Peerless Beauty uses its flower power to make subtle little story beats and integrates the nature of plants into its themes with grace, well, it is practically to the extent that this book gets it wrong. So what I’m implying is that Ran is really, really good at it.
The basic premise is choking this series to death and I have rarely been so annoyed and conflicted by a book that is meant to be harmless fluff because of how stupid it’s contortions are. This is the rare case where the concept should have been jettisoned ages ago because it makes no sense (how many volumes have I even been saying this now!?).
Chigiri and Kisaragi clearly have feelings for each other, but have to keep it under this pretence that makes no sense as they literally grope and fondle one another, consensually, under this whole charade. This is, not to put too fine a point on it, SUPER DUMB.
What further annoys me is that Kisaragi explains that she never asks for anything or relies on Chigiri because she was raised to be super independent, which is something that could have been brought up ages ago and also hasn’t felt borne out by any of the other volumes.
And Tezuka’s one of the most obnoxious rivals I’ve seen in a while and the way he runs hot and cold and the book seems to trade him off as even possibly a decent guy makes me seethe. It’s all ‘oh he just misses track’ while he’s scheming to upset the apple cart at every turn.
Which is all to say that this book only survives on my list because it does manage some good moments. There’s a really sweet moment when Kisaragi’s train breaks down during a rainstorm and Chigiri comes to the rescue, leading to a really cute sequence at his house that has no small amount of sweetness (even wrapped in the lamesauce story conceits) and features an adorable cat (the cat pretty much steals the most delightful image in the whole volume).
Moments like these are just barely enough - these two could actually talk and get somewhere and it beggars belief that Kisaragi’s self-confidence is SO low that she can’t fathom that the guy who is all over her like cheese on a cracker might actually care about her for real. At least she stands up for herself at the end of the book, which has been an ungodly time coming.
2.5 stars and I’m finally putting my foot down and dinging a story I am likely to continue to read because it is wasting a lot of its potential getting hung up in some of the most ridiculous interpersonal nonsense I’ve ever seen in the genre. It is criminal how good this can be when it’s not hellbent on being dumb.
Not sure how I missed reviewing this one. Probably blasted through it so quickly I didn’t even think to list it. THAT. ENDING! 5 stars, my fav series so far, of this genre.

COME ON MAAYA!!! How dense can she be??? What will it take for you to see that the feelings are ACTUALLY mutual? I can see them having sex and her thinking, “Oh He OnLy DiD ThAt BEcaUse He Is BeInG NiCeeee..” Ugh, cut the bullshit and get together FOR REAL already.
UGH! So cute. I needed light and cute. The consent! No one is talking about how Chigi asks for consent on everything and is so respectful of Maaya! I love to see it.
Out of all the volumes, this one has to be the best one yet. There were a lot of sweet cute moments here from Maaya and Chigira, and it was nice to see both of them open up a bit more. Tezuka is still annoying, but not as annoying as before anymore too.
With that being said, I wish Chigira would just confess to Maaya already because it's so clear that the both of them like each other but both are also afraid/don't want to confess. I guess the problem here is that this series is getting too drawn out with the same kind of problems again and again and ofc I don't want that to happen. Meanwhile, there's also a small part in me that would like to believe that the moment Chigi-Chigi ACTUALLY confesses to Maaya it will be super heartwarming and spectacular. I just hope Anan-sensei does not make us the readers wait long for it.
Y encima, a esa edad. La entiendo perfectamente.
Tezuka me está tocando un poquito las narices...amigo, relaja. Por otro parte...viejos amigos? Necesito más información.
I really wish they would get past this concept of “pretending to have one-sided feelings” for each other. It is very clear that they have real feelings for each other, and this is just making misunderstandings for no reason.
I’ve been reading a lot of other series recently, so I had forgotten about there little arrangement. If it wasn’t for them bringing it up, I would have thought they were a real couple already. The scene at his house was kinda cute, though for a bit I started to worry that he was going to go full possessive control freak on her. She is so incredibly easy to push around…I wish this type wasn’t so popular in shoujo.

I feel like the reason I keep reading this series is because of all the adorable fluff-filled potential that Maaya and Chigira-kun have if they would become an official couple. Instead there’s a lack of communication, some pretty low self-esteem from Maaya, as well as, Chigira-kun’s former track mate: Tezuka-kun bring a major annoyance. I’m just wishing that Maaya and Chigira-kun would officially stop “pretending” and admit their feelings for each other instead of this game that they’re playing, that’s starting to get annoying since the manga’s directed audience clearing sees what these characters are too shy or insecure to see for themselves.
I really like this series so far, it's cute and light. Teen love in shoujo manga tends to feel heartwarming for me, this one too. I get why ml proposed his idea but as I read the stories there's time where I kinda want him to come clean or at least stop using that p-word. Overall I really enjoy the stories and characters, I get the fl and ml anxiety after learning more about them but once they stop using the p-word it's getting even more enjoyable and cute for me. Oh and of course it's a slow burn well not burn but you get what I mean.
I don’t know why I’m living this. She really isn’t the type of protagonist I typically enjoy. (Overly shy and cautious) but these two need real feelings asap. I am dense but I hope I’m never as dense as she is sometimes. I’m glad he always is there for her.
here we have a male character who clearly likes the girl but he tells her they can fake date so she can get over her crush and now the girl has fallen AKSDJHASJSA
It is indeed interesting to see why the FL became the way that she is. I can actually relate to her being used to do everything on her own and refusing getting help for anything. It is a hard place to get out of, which is also why I like the fact things are changing slowly. ML is still as precious as ever... Poor boy has it so bad xD
Chapter "Come on in" - what is this fluff?! @.@ I'm going back and fort between "awwww so cute" and laughing xD She thought he was being serious for a second... Girl, you have NO idea... How serious he is xD
Chapter "Smooch" - I...
Chapter "So, how far?" - haha people been impatient and hating on ML for not confessing. I don't think his only reason is that he thinks she hasn't moved on. I also don't think this is simple and shallow. Maybe I'm overthinking, but honestly if he asked her to date while thinking she's still hung up on another guy + in his eyes she's not as happy being with him, as when he saw her smiling to herself dazed and delusional, while having a one-sided crush on another guy. He's giving her time to heal and helping her fix her low self-esteem through actions, and even though he sees that honestly telling her what he thinks and feels she just brushes it off, he keeps carefully putting those things in words as well. At this rate, she still considers him "out of her league" and him asking her out for real will be stressful for her in so many ways. Like, her thinking that she's not good enough for him, her hearing even more from unrelated people how "they don't fit" and the type of girl that suits him, which she is not (she already has issues with those things and having more of it solves nothing). You can say "she should not care about that and just be happy that he loves her and is with her" and that's all well and good, but it doesn't work like that. Also, he is helping her learn to lean on someone else and depend on them, instead struggle to always do everything on her own. This ain't easy to do or fix, so patience is important and he has it for her, but I also love the fact he's the right amount of pushy and greedy in some situations. He gives her the push she needs to move forward, but doesn't overstep her boundaries and tries to communicate with her about it. Like in this chapter "How far is he allowed to go, within the bounds of common sense?".
All in all, no matter how much you may think "ugh get together for real already!" , it is best they do when she's in the right mental state. Healing from some things and previous heartbreak/relationship is not really a good idea to do while in the middle of a new relationship. This can mess up so many things (been there, done that).
Ah, and if you wonder why he suggested this silly pretend game at all... It is most likely to both make her conscious of him, make her consider him as an option, help both of them see what a relationship feels like (we all know how much he wants it at this point) and so that she won't go off falling for another guy as soon as she gets over that douche. It's kinda speaking in and of itself how desperate he was to resort to this option xD also how uncertain and afraid he is, that she might fall for someone else. He is a sweet and humble cinnamon roll ❤️ I can't with his eagerness to have a deeper relationship with her and the temporary upgrade of the pretend game at his place shows what he dreams of and how far... Absolutely adorable.
