For two years, Miss Amelia Wimple has lived a reclusive life, withdrawn from societal events and entertaining only her second cousins, Olivia and Rose Sherbourne. A precipitous midnight visit from her former beau Samuel brought a severely injured rake, Lord Stephen Brookes, to her doorstep. As Amelia heals the injured lord back to health, she gives him the motivation to be more than a rake; in turn, he gives Amelia the confidence to rejoin society, and an everlasting love.
Two years ago, Amelia was an heiress disdained by the ton for her father’s making a fortune in trade. She was in expectation of an offer from Samuel, except he eloped on the night of his supposed proposal, and in the wake of an embarrassing scene that she and her mother caused, Amelia decided to henceforth withdraw from society. One person she never forgot was Stephen, the only person who showed compassion to her after the fiasco, which made her determined to help him recover in her home, while knowing the danger it could do to her reputation.
Under Amelia’s gentle ministration, Stephen’s injuries begin to heal and he strikes up a comfortable friendship with Amelia, albeit with a touch of desire. He worked hard cultivate a rakish image for society, and never found a reason to change – until now. Not only did he intend to stop gambling and borrowing money from loan sharks – which was what got him beaten up in the first place – but he also wanted to change for Amelia. Stephen wanted to become someone worthy of Amelia’s love, a person capable of helping and supporting her. To that end, Stephen grew as a person and helped Amelia to re-enter society, and proved to her his change to convince her of his love.
This is a sweet and charming novella with two fantastic characters and a lot of humor, especially the gossip rags Amelia writes of herself in third person. Anne Barton has done a fine job of crafting a wonderful novella with a fun plot and an enchanting set of characters. I highly recommend this, and look forward to her upcoming Honeycote novel.

The writing and dialogue are a bit too contemporary for me. I really had to suspend my belief in the events that occur in this novella. The love scenes weren't at all steamy. I'll definitely try one of her full-length novels to determine if I want to read more books written by this new-to-me author.

For a novella, I enjoyed this book. I liked the characters, especially Amelia. The story was simple but I was hooked from the beginning. There were definitely some naughty times with a particular rake, and what more can a girl ask for???
It made me interested to read her other books.

This was an absolutely delightful novella! Short but sweet and completely satisfying with likeable characters, smart dialogue and a dash of heat. I enjoyed watching our couple find happiness together while they grew into themselves. I am very eager for more works from Anne Barton! A perfect treat that all historical romance fans will enjoy, highly recommended.

Well, this is a book. I was looking for something short and easy to read before bed last night, so I checked this out of the library on a whim. I would say this book suffers from a severe case of being a novella. Not that all novellas are bad, but this one just felt underdevelopped, inconsistent, and a bit rushed. With a bit more of a page count it might have gotten there. As it stands, I'd give this a miss, which is a bit of a shame because the premise sounds delightful (and obviously utterly ridiculous)

Totally sweet and lovely! To All the Rakes I've Loved Before was a wonderful historical romance novella. I loved it!
Amelia was a great heroine. She was so likable and an overall lovely character. She was a tough one, to go through the kind of embarrassment of a broken engagement leaves. I really liked her.
Stephen was such a sweetheart! I adored him. He was so sweet and adorable and impossible not to fall for. He might have been a rake, but, when he fell, he fell hard. And it was so sweet.
The romance was adorable. Amelia and Stephen were totally sweet together. And the chemistry between them was on fire. These two had sparks to spare. They were a wonderful couple.
The plot was fast paced. I was hooked the entire way through. This story was the kind of sweet, light read that gets you smiling. And the ending was so cute. I loved it!
To All the Rakes I've Loved Before was a brilliant historical romance novella. I completely and totally adored it! Romance lovers, if you want a quick, light, sweet read, then you have to read this book.

Very pretty cover. I was totally drawn by To All the Rakes I've Loved Before by it's beautiful cover. Well okay, the .98 price tag at Amazon and the good reviews was another.
Unfortunately, the story did nothing for me at all. I thought for .98 I'd give a "new to me" author a try. I felt unsatisfied with the story and a whole lot of "meh". To All the Rakes I've Loved Before is a novella and is book 1.5 in the series but you can read as a stand alone without any issues at all.
I was very confused at the title. I didn't get it. Amelia Wimple, the protagonist, was engaged a prior two years before to when this story takes place. Unfortunately she was jilted on that engagement. That was it. That was the extent of the men in her past. The man she was engaged to at the time wasn't even a rake so I felt the title was misleading. I was expecting a feisty lady who didn't want to settle down or something.
Now Lord Stephen Brookes was a rake by reputation but all of a sudden, overnight, without any preamble leading up to his decision, he is through with being a gambling rake and wants to settle down with a wife, take on loads of estate responsibility, pay off his hefty gambling debts and even have children. I fear that is the issue with novellas; not enough time for a back-story for his predicament to warrant a change.
He is beaten badly and rescued by his dear friend (who just happens to be the man that jilted Amelia's engagement dreams) and ends up at Amelia's house (of all places) to be nursed back to health. The ex-fiance friend is squeamish at the sight of blood and leaves Amelia and Stephen alone. Stephen's eyes are swelled shut and it even looks like one eyeball is protruding out of the socket and yet Amelia thinks he is so handsome and a maid wants to hang around him because he is so good looking?????
The story goes on with unlikeliness after another and finally I decided it was just a novella and with all these great ratings, I must be missing something so I kept reading onward I also must mention next issue (because this is a huge pet peeve with me) the ebook finished and it was only at 70%. I was sure that there was more to come. It didn't.

Ahh so Anne Barton totally won me over last year with When She Was Wicked. Turns out she can totally rock a novella too. To All The Rakes I've Loved Before was sweet and sexy and had me smiling the entire time as a notorious rake literally lands, battered and in desperate need of care, on the reclusive heroine's doorstep after a harrowing attack.
Stephen and Amelia were really wonderful. They've had innocent moments together in their past when she was hurting and in need of a friend and I loved that they were brought together once again when he needed her. They're very upfront and open--not hiding behind polite manners or keeping their thoughts hidden--and just put it all out there for the other and it's so refreshing and fun to watch. The steamy bits aren't over the top steamy but they're nice and intimate and perfect in all their inappropriateness.
I loved pretty much everything about To All The Rakes I've Loved Before. The set up, the characters, the humor and sweetness between Stephen and Amelia as they fall in love and bring out the best in each other. It's just a lovely little romance that'll leave you smiling.

Stephen and Amelia were really wonderful. Her knees went wobbly and her belly fluttered. The thought of his hands, large and warm, skimming over her bottom, up her sides, cupping her breasts--

Now, her mother is off to Bath and Amelia has the house all to herself, but her short life of bliss is rudely interrupted by the man who jilted her bringing the unconscious, severely beaten Lord Stephen Brookes to her doorstep seeking refuge. Amelia, God bless her, decides to hide Stephen until his wounds heal enough that he doesn't scare people...But she might get more in return that she's bargained for.
Another cute and slightly humorous story in this series. Pity it suffered from its lack of length.

But the latter was so quick and rushed, it failed to be believable. I could see the potential, but it certainly needed a few more chapters to be developed properly...Or, it could've been presented as the blurb insinuated; that Stephen has always had a tendre for Amelia and used the golden opportunity of his stay with her to his advantage.

Still, it was an enjoyable read.

I think the title is a little misleading. I love the title, but it makes it seem like the heroine has loved many rakes in the past when really she falls quickly in love with just one.
I liked the idea of the novella where the heroine nurses the hero back to health after he is attacked, but I thought the character development was flat. Writing a novella, one draws a fine line between not enough character information or too much because it has to move quickly. I didn't think there was a lot of depth to them. Declarations happen quickly, few lines of drama, and quick love scenes. I've read a good share of novellas to be able to not say oh it's a novella you get some leeway with not having enough character development.
It's cute, it's quick, but I'll be sticking with Barton's full length novels.

It's one of those novellas I think would've worked better as a proper novel, but the relationship between the hero and heroine is great. Not only am I sucker for books where one of them plays nurse, but this is also the story of Stephen wanting to be a better person deserving of Amelia. Actually, he says he's not good enough for her, which is what I like to hear from a hero.There's also a bit of background on the two from flashbacks so it didn't feel completely rushed and it seems like the relationship had something to build on.

Last night I curled up with my Kindle for the first time in months (I've been reading my e-books on Mr. Turning the Pages' iPad) and this was the one I ended up reading. I've been reading quite a bit of romance lately in particular the historical romance genre and I wanted something quick, fun, and new to read so this totally fit the bill.
I had never heard of the author before so I think To All the Rakes I've Loved Before was an excellent introduction to Anne Barton's writing style and I've got to say that as someone who is not a fan of novella's I really enjoyed this one.
Amelia and Stephen were a great couple and I absolutely adored their pairing. The chemistry between the two was immediately apparent even though they both kind of didn't expect it there were at least some feelings there already. I loved the friendly banter between the two and wouldn't hesitate to call them one of the cutest couples I've read about this year. I really liked how the relationship between them developed even though there was a major case of insta-love in this one it didn't bring the story crashing down like it tends to. Instead I felt that their feelings were genuine and the passion that Stephen had for Amelia was admirable, she totally had him wrapped around her little finger.
I liked that Amelia wasn't your typical historical romance heroine. Yes she was a little naive, but she was also a little more cynical than most of the heroines in the genre after she got jilted and Stephen was the typical rake but I actually found that I liked him right away especially the way he was willing to work to change Amelia's mind about him and the prospect of marriage. I thought he was really charming and sweet.
Overall, I think that To All The Rakes I've Loved Before was a good little novella to read while I was in between books. I liked the way Anne Barton set their romance up and she really surprised me since I don't really enjoy novellas. For once the insta-love in a story didn't bother me and I think she handled it really well. There was plenty of laughs in this sweet little novella but there were a couple really steamy parts mixed in as well to counter the sweetness. I am definitely looking forward to reading the first book in this series as soon as I can get my hands on a copy.
I would recommend this novella to fans of Anne Barton and those who haven't read her yet. This novella is the perfect thing to pick up in between books if you're a historical romance fan who likes some giggles with her love stories. The novella can be read as a standalone and you'll have no problem following the story if you haven't read the first book in the Honeycote series.

After an inconspicuous but slightly embarrassing jilting, Amelia escapes from society and the gossip rags, content with hiding away and writing her own little gossip rag. That is until a night full of unexpected surprises pulls her out of her little world. Enter Lord Stephen Brookes, who shows up to Amelia's Mayfair home, battered and beaten. With only Amelia to help with his injuries, the two build a sweet and adorable bond.
Overall, it was an utterly sweet romance with two wonderful people. A lovely addition to the Honeycote series and a good reminder to why I really enjoyed When She Was Wicked & why I'm looking forward to Once She Was Tempted. Definitely recommended if you're in need of a short adorable romance.

Tell me, how wonderful and thoughtful is that? Pretty sure I swooned. I adore their relationship because they bring the best out of each other. I love that Stephen tries to be a better person for Amelia but also tries to make her believe more in herself too. Also nothing makes me happier than having stupid misunderstanding resolved quickly! I also loved Amelia's third person little snippets of her gossip insight into her life, too cute.
Overall, it was an utterly sweet romance with two wonderful people. A lovely addition to the Honeycote series and a good reminder to why I really enjoyed When She Was Wicked & why I'm looking forward to Once She Was Tempted. Definitely recommended if you're in need of a short adorable romance.

To All the Rakes I’ve Loved Before is a delightful little novella sure to make you smile. In this story we meet Miss Amelia Wimple, jilted bride, recluse, and daughter of a veritable harpy. It’s impossible not to like Amelia – she’s forthright, amusing, and delightfully free of artifice. Our hero is of course a dashing rake known as Lord Brookes. He is none of the things Amelia is - he is brash, irresponsible, and often guilty of making poor decisions. It’s one of these decisions that quite literally brings him to her door in the middle of the night.
As with most novellas, for the romance to work our hero and heroine must already be known to each other. This is the case here. I found their history to be both believable and charming. The pace of their burgeoning relationship, however, at times strains one’s credulity. For Regency England, Amelia in particular behaves like a hoyden. I’m not saying it’s wrong, mind you – the steamy scenes between the two were both sweet and sexy – but it’s not very historically accurate. Their relationship was rushed as well. Amelia keeps saying she doesn’t want to get married, and within a few days of Lord Brookes’ company, she’s devastated that he hasn’t proposed yet. Perhaps in a longer, novel-length work, that would have seemed like less of an issue. If that doesn’t bother you, read on and enjoy! The dialogue between Lord Brookes and Amelia is witty and honest, and the ending will leave you satisfied and happy.

This is a sweet and delightful novella that continues the Honeycote series. I enjoy the characters Ms. Barton creates along with a feel good story about re-joining the living after heartache.
Amelia Wimple has kept herself secluded ever since “The Jilting”, as she calls it. She does not want to associate with those that gossiped about her after a humiliating fiasco when the man she thought was going to propose to her sent a note instead and eloped with another.
Her mother is gone for two weeks and everyone in the house is breathing a sigh of relief, her mother is very overbearing and the staff appreciates the respite. While she is enjoying a night of solitude, Lord Verrington (Samuel), comes to her door in the middle of the night looking for help for his friend Brookes. Samuel is the man who left her two years ago and although she has not seen him lately, she is willing to listen.
Lord Brookes (Stephen) is a roguish man about town. He was severely beaten by unknowns and Samuel is trying to find a place for him to recuperate without others finding out what happened. Amelia agrees to help Stephen as he was there for her two years ago when Samuel left her.
As she helps with his wounds, they get reacquainted and find common attraction. Stephen makes some decisions about his life and he wants to include the lovely Amelia.
What a short and sweet tale about finding yourself.

This is a novella that's part of Barton's "Honeycote" series. I haven't read the first book (When She Was Wicked, about Annabelle who is to marry Rose and Olivia's brother), but I didn't suffer for it. Amelia is removed from the going-ons of the Sherboune family (for the most part) and her story was told independent of Annabelle's (save for a mention of a ball Annabelle was holding).
This was a short, delightful read. Amelia, though somewhat more of a pushover then she should be, proves her mettle. She won't let the past repeat itself, but at the same time she's wants so much more. Her mother makes it hard (and I suspect part of the issues Amelia had with her fiancee were in part because of her mother's meddling), but Amelia finds small comforts. Her pretend gossip columns about her 'scandalous' going-ons, her practical outlook that if Stephen was there anyhow why not take advantage of the time?
Stephen, who's reputation as a rakehell and gambler precede him, is genuine with Amelia despite himself. Her earnest request that he doesn't pretend with her bemuses him as much as it beguiles him. Amelia isn't angling for anything more then shared passion and a few stolen moments for herself. Whether she feels otherwise is moot--which she makes abundantly clear from the get-go--it won't get in the way of things.
The obvious obstacle that Barton uses to separate the two undermines some of the honesty that the two portray, but it resolves itself quickly enough. I think this is an excellent introduction to Barton's writing and will seek out the other books!

Generally I'm not overly fond of novellas because there doesn't seem to be enough character or plot development. This sweet short story is an exception. In just over a hundred pages, I fell in love with Amelia and Stephen and thoroughly enjoyed their romance.
Two years ago, on what should have been her engagement announcement, Amelia's fiance jilted her and eloped, leaving her humiliated. To make the situation worse, her mother created a huge scene, increasing the embarrassment and scandal. Stephen, Lord Brooke, her almost fiance's best friend does his best to help smooth over the situation. Amelia decides to withdraw from society and has lived quietly since.
One night, Stephen is badly beaten for not paying back a gambling loan he took from a loan shark. A friend brings him to Amelia's home, knowing her mother is away. The two of them have always had a friendly rapport, but during the intimacy of Amelia caring for him, it escalates to attraction.
The rake Stephen decides that he needs to reform, and that Amelia is the one for him. These two were just perfect for each other, and it was a delight to watch them fall in love. This book was uplifting, and it makes me want to read more by Anne Barton.

I loved Barton’s first novel and this novella did not disappoint. I do wish it was longer but Barton was able to put everything in this novella that was needed to tell a story. I liked that characters from book one make small appearances and am waiting to read book two in this fun series.

And so each chapter of To All The Rakes I’ve Loved Before begins – with a small entry of Amelia’s pretend gossip paper, giving some hint to what the chapter would hold. I loved it. It’s been a while since I read portions of a book to my husband… he got an ear-full with this one!

Amelia Wimple gets an unexpected visitor late one evening (you could call it early morning!) by the man that had jilted her. She can't imagine what he is doing at her home, but soon learns that his best friend has been injured and needs a place to stay. Since Amelia's mother is out of town and she rarely ventures out into society, he thought her home would be the perfect place for Lord Stephen Brookes to recover.
Stephen is known to be a rakehell and a gambler. His injuries were sustained from the man he owed money to. During his short recovery period, Stephen and Amelia have an immediate attraction to each other and quickly act on those feelings.
This was a very quick read (I read it in an hour) but very enjoyable. We get to see a small glimpse of Olivia and Rose Sherbourne, whom we meet in When She was wicked. I'm hoping this will tie me over until the next book comes out in October.

TO ALL THE RAKES I'VE LOVED by Anne Barton is an exciting Regency Historical Romance. A Novella. #1.5 in "A Honeycote Novel" series, but can be read as a stand alone. See, "When She Was Wicked". Fast paced and a quick read! Join Lord Stephen Brookes and Miss Amelia Wimple,her beloved cousins Rose and Olivia Sherbourne as they navigate the waters of romance, desire and the prospect of love. I enjoyed "To All the Rakes I've Loved" very much, it is a sweet story of love, desire, and healing a broken heart. A notorious rake,battered and in desperate need of care and a reclusive heroine,what could be better! Both lonely and in desperate need to love. A must read! Well done! The characters are engaging and enduring to say the least. The storyline compelling and interesting and "To All the Rakes I've Love" will leave you smiling as well as satisfied. A sweet novella! Oh my goodness, welcome to another rockstar of historical romance! I absolutely loved To All the Rakes I've Loved Before, and was sad it was only a novella, since that meant less pages to indulge in Stephen and Amelia's story!
I was utterly entranced by Stephen and Amelia's story, and already cannot wait to go back and read book 1 in the series, and then continue on to book 2. Anne Barton has a prominent writing style that I just loved.
I did feel that the end rushed a bit - it didn't feel as fluid as the first 3/4 of the book did and the pacing was a bit off. This didn't stop me from loving it any less really, but just kind of did not give me everything I was looking for.
Definitely an author to watch. To All the Rakes I've Loved Before is a bewitching tale of romance and I cannot wait to read more from this fantastic author.

Amelia is a homebody with a huge imagination of a tabloid writer Aka gossip rag!
Stephen is a rake , a womanizer but secretly sick of his lifestyle.
When some thugs he owed money too didn’t care anything for his life or being a Lord!
I think they beat some sense into him! The fact that Amelia ex is the one that brought him to her doorstep is very interesting!
Those two were not a match! I love the banter between them. The love of the right spouse can change you all for the better!
But is Stephen really changed? When he is spied coming out of a gaming hell! Amelia can’t trust him anymore!
Stephen is devastated but determined because things are not what they seem!
These two deserve a HEA. Stephen needs to stay away from temptation and Amelia is more beautiful and kind then she knows! Bravo!

The real saving grace of this novel is the engaging characters, especially Amelia Wimple. With low self-esteem stemming from earlier weight issues, Amelia is finally learning to stand up for herself, especially with her mother. She’s faced with dealing with Stephen, Lord Brooke, and his money issues after he’s brought to her house severely beaten by a money lender’s thugs. The unfolding of the story is a bit short and therefore lacks proper development, but there are some great sizzling scenes and engaging characters to save the day.

This was a great novella. A very enjoyable afternoon read.
Stephen and Amelia are both very likable characters - I loved Amelia's make believe gossip column at the beginning of each chapter.
Did they fall in love too quickly? Maybe - but it is a novella, so you have to expect things to move at rapid pace. Did the relationship seem rushed? Not at all - I thought it was very believable.
I just discovered this author and am really glad I did. I love her writing style - a good plot, steamy love scenes, likable characters and a happy ending - what's not to like?

what a lovely novella. It was a very short and easy read for me and I liked it very much. Amelia is a recluse after the Jilting and was woken one evening to house and nurse a badly beaten Stephen Brookes. While he was recuperating, she got to see a new side to a friend who helped her years ago. Now he wants to change his ways. I'm glad he did what he did to push Amelia out of her comfort zone. I also liked that her maid helped along the way too. Good characters and writing for a nice ending.
